MOSAICUM
Il mosaico è una Tecnica decorativa a base di
piccoli frammenti di materiali, tessere, di
diversa natura e colore, usata fin dall'antichità
per realizzare pavimenti, pareti e singoli
elementi. Il mosaico nasce prima di tutto con
intenti pratici, più che estetici, per ricoprire e
proteggere i muri o i pavimenti in terra battuta.
L’opus musivum, opera ispirata dalle Muse, da
cui deriva la parola mosaico, deve
probabilmente il suo nome alla decorazione di
fontane, intorno alle quali le Muse si riunivano
per cantare e danzare. Furono i contatti con
l’Oriente a ispirare ai Greci i loro primi mosaici
di ciottoli colorati tra l’VIII e il VII secolo a.C.

Mosaic is a decorative technique using tiny
fragments of material, tesserae or tiles, of
various kinds and colours which has been used
since ancient times in floors, walls and
decorative elements. Primarily it had a practical
rather than aesthetic function and was used to
cover and protect walls or dirt floors. The opus
musivum or work inspired by the Muses which
is the origin of the word mosaic, probably owes
its name to the decorations of the fountains
around which the Muses supposedly gathered
to dance and sing. It was contact with the Orient
that inspired the Greeks to make their first
mosaics from coloured pebbles between the 8th

Con l'espansione in Grecia e in Egitto, si
svilupperà un interesse per la ricerca estetica e
la raffinatezza delle composizioni. I mosaicisti si
resero conto che frantumando i ciottoli
potevano ottenere una superficie piana
adeguata alla realizzazione di pavimenti e, alla
fine del IV secolo a.C., il taglio si affinò a tal punto
che il mezzo ciottolo divenne un cubo, la
tessera.
L’uso di minuscoli frammenti permetterà al
mosaicista di gareggiare con il pittore nella
ricerca di forme espressive sempre più
raffinate e, dal II secolo a.C., la tecnica del
mosaico policromo in Italia centro meridionale
diventerà perfetta.
Come la pittura, questo tipo di decorazione
conoscerà numerosi stili e correnti, con due
tendenze fondamentali che
nel tempo
evolveranno parallelamente, una geometrica e
l’altra figurativa.
Il lavoro parte dalla mia terra, la Calabria e dalle
opere antiche qui ritrovate. Mi sono avvicinato
all’arte musiva dopo un'intensa ricerca sul
mosaico Greco, Romano e Bizantino presente
in ottimo stato nei ritrovamenti archeologici.
Gli affascinanti simboli di una grandiosa civiltà,
mi hanno spinto verso le tecniche più pregiate e
minuziose.
Diplomato Maestro d’Arte specializzato in
creazione e decorazione tessile, ho
successivamente aperto un laboratorio
artigianale in un piccolo paese. Nel 2009,
voglioso di conoscere culture lontane, intrapresi
un viaggio ian Cina, dove la pazienza, applicata
all’artigianato, sa creare opere di altissima
fattura. Come responsabile di un’azienda leader
nel settore, ho curato la fabbricazione di
mosaici su rete in marmo. Rientrato in italia nel
2011, ho messo il bagaglio di esperienze sul
tavolo e ho ricominciato dalle mie radici.
As mosaics spread to Greece and Egypt the
focus shifted to the aesthetics and composition.
Artists realised that if they shattered the pebbles
they could create a flat surface suitable for
making flooring and at the end of the 6th
century B.C. the half pebble evolved into a cube,
the mosaic tile. The use of tiny fragments
allowed mosaic artists to compete with painters
as they strived for increasingly refined forms of
expression and the technique of polychrome
mosaic was perfected in central and southern
Italy from the 2nd century B.C. onwards. Like
painting, this type of decoration would be
influenced by many schools and styles but there
were two main approaches which evolved side
by side, the geometric and figurative mosaic.
It all starts with my homeland, Calabria, and the
ancient works of art found all over the region. I
began working with mosaic after intensive
study of the Greek, Roman and Byzantine
archaeological finds. These fabulous relics of
great civilizations fostered my interest in the
finer more painstaking techniques. I qualified as
Maestro d’Arte specializing in textiles and
opened my workshop in a small town. In 2009,
fired by the desire to learn about faraway
cultures, I set off for China, where the
painstaking approach to crafts produces the
highest quality results. As manager of a major
company in the sector I was in charge of the
production of marble mosaic on mesh backing.
On my return to Italy in 2011, I took stock of the
experience gained and started all over again
from my roots.

Il Novecento segna la rinascita del Mosaico con
l'Impressionismo e il Divisionismo, il frazionamento del colore e la semplificazione della
forma, e poi grazie al Liberty e all'Art Déco.
Gaudì e Klimt si ricordano per l'uso innovativo di
questa tecnica.
Le esecuzioni maggiormente realistiche e
raffinate venivano realizzate con tessere
piccolissime tagliate nei marmi più diversi e
arricchite con paste vitree colorate. Le opere
più accurate e costose riguardavano in genere
superfici molto ridotte, costituivano cioè
l’emblema, vale a dire un pannello prezioso
inserito nel centro di una composizione.
I supporti più utilizzati per fissare le tessere
sono la malta e il calcestruzzo (sabbia e
cemento).
Si usa anche il legno reso impermeabile, il
vetro, il compensato e adesivi a base di cemento, colla bianca e ultimamente il silicone.
Moltissimi i materiali per le tessere, che
permettono effetti diversi: ciottoli, la pasta di
vetro, quadrati d'arenaria, ceramica smaltata,
marmo, oro e l'argento, vetro soffiato.
Realizzo mosaici su misura per ogni tipologia di
richiesta, come ARREDO DI INTERNI,
DECORAZIONI, OGGETTI e PEZZI UNICI e
progetti per il DECORO URBANO.
Lavoro in Italia, ma naturalmente è possibile
ordinare dall'estero: con le sue nobili origini
infatti, il mosaico è un'arte praticata e
apprezzata in tutto il Mondo.
The twentieth century marks the rebirth of the
Mosaic with Impressionism and Pointillism , the
splitting of the color and the simplification of
form, and then thanks to the Liberty and Art
Deco. Gaudi and Klimt are remembered for the
innovative use of this technique.
The most realistic and refined work is done
using tiny tiles cut from different types of
marble decorated with coloured glass paste.
The most detailed and costly mosaics were
generally on a smaller scale, constituting the
emblem, a decorative panel inserted in the
centre of a composition.
The materials most commonly to set the tiles
are cement and concrete (sand and cement).
Waterproofed wood is used as well as glass,
plywood and cement-based adhesives, white
glue and, more recently, silicone. Many kinds of
materials are used for the mosaic tiles to create
different effects: pebbles, glass paste, squares of
sandstone, enamelled ceramic, marble, gold and
silver and blown glass.
I create mosaics to order for a range of
applications such as INTERIOR DESIGN,
DECORATIONS, OBJECTS, ONE OFF PIECES
and URBAN DESIGN projects.
I work in Italy but naturally I can take orders
from abroad. Given its noble origins, mosaic is
an art that is appreciated the world over.

From tradition to innovation.
Utilizzo diverse tecniche di mosaico / range of mosaic tecniques:
1. MICRO MOSAICO: per opere molto dettagliate, come le opere figurative, richiama al mosaico
romano imperiale. Si utilizzano tasselli di dimensioni piccolissime, massimo di 5/6 mm e minimo di
1/2 mm. Per opere a parete, anche se in antichità veniva utilizzato per pavimenti o per quadri e
gioielli.
2. MOSAICO TRADIZIONALE: la dimensione dei tasselli è rigorosamente tracciata a mano, dai 6mm
ai 2cm. Utilizzato per soggetti geometrici, floreali o unito al Micro mosaico per la realizzazione degli
sfondi.
3. MOSAICO PALLADIANO O INCERTO: la particolarità è data dai tasselli dal taglio "incerto" quindi
non regolare, con questa tecnica vengono realizzate opere decorative tipo rosoni o decorazioni a
parete.
4. MOSAICO MISTO: utilizzata se necessaria minuziosa realizzazione di soggetti in primo piano con
il micromosaico e mosaico tradizionale o incerto per gli sfondi.
1. MICRO: for extremely detailed projects like figurative work, this recalls the mosaic of the Roman
Empire. The tiles used are tiny, max 5/6 mm and min 1/2 mm. Used for wall mosaics, even though in
ancient times they were also used for floors and pictures.
2. TRADITIONAL: the tiles are cut by hand in sizes from 6mm to 2cm. Used for geometric, floral or
together with micro for creating backgrounds.
3. PALLADIAN OR INCERTO: the particular feature of this is the irregular or uncertain cut of the tiles.
This technique is used to make decorations like ceiling roses or wall decorations.
4. MIXED: used where fine detail is required for foreground subjects using micromosaic with
traditional or Palladian mosaic for the backgrounds.
