Since October 2016 we have been celebrating our 200th anniversary.
It is with joy that today we welcome Pope Francis together with many ecumenical
friends to celebrate with us.
The form of our worship this afternoon includes elements of Anglican Choral
Evensong. The Blessing of an icon of St Saviour and the renewal of our common
baptismal vows will be led by Pope Francis and the bishops of our Anglican
Diocese.
Commissioned by our Chaplaincy Church Council, the icon was written by Ian
Knowles, a British artist resident in Bethlehem. The image of Christ (St Saviour)
is based on an illustration by the English 13th Century Benedictine, Matthew
Paris.
There has been an informal twinning between All Saints’ Anglican Church and
the Parish of Ognissanti, Appia Nuova for over ten years. Today we formalise
this by publically declaring our intention to worship God together when possible,
to work in the service of the poor and to deepen our friendship.

oggi, con immensa gioia, condividiamo i nostri festeggiamenti con Papa
Francesco e tanti altri amici ecumenici.
La funzione include elementi tipici dei Vespri Anglicani Cantati, la benedizione
di un’icona e il rinnovo delle promesse battesimali guidato da Papa Francesco e
dai nostri Vescovi Diocesani.
L’icona di San Salvatore, commissionata dal nostro Consiglio Parrocchiale, è
stata creata da Ian Knowles, un noto artista inglese residente a Betlemme.
L'iconografia di Cristo (San Salvatore) si ispira ad una miniatura di Matthew
Paris, un monaco benedettino inglese del tredicesimo secolo.
Da oltre dieci anni esiste un gemellaggio informale tra la Chiesa Anglicana di
All Saints e la Parrocchia di Ognissanti, Via Appia Nuova (Roma).
Oggi si formalizzerà questo rapporto con una dichiarazione formale sulle nostre
intenzioni di continuare a lodare Cristo insieme, di lavorare congiuntamente al
servizio dei poveri e, così facendo, approfondire la nostra amicizia.

Blessing of the icon

Bishop David: Sisters and brothers, it is a great joy for us to praise God on
the occasion of the 200th anniversary of this community, during which a
new image of our Saviour Jesus Christ is dedicated for public veneration.
It is a reminder of our God ever faithful who in the fullness of time sent his
Son to be our saviour. It is a reminder to us that Christ, eternal Son of the
Father, made man in the womb of the Virgin, is the image of the invisible
God, sign and sacrament of God the Father. It is a reminder to us that
Christ is Lord of the Church and the source of her unity. Venerating this
image, we elevate the gaze of our hearts to Christ, who forever lives and
reigns with the Father and Holy Spirit.

Ti benediciamo, Padre Santo: nel tuo immenso amore verso il genere
umano, hai mandato nel mondo come Salvatore e primogenito tra molti
fratelli il tuo Verbo eterno, fatto uomo nel grembo della Vergine
purissima, in tutto simile a noi, fuorché nel peccato.
Tu ci hai dato in Cristo il modello perfetto della santità: la Chiesa lo
venera bambino, e in Lui, piccolo e fragile, adora il Dio onnipotente;
contemplando il suo volto scorge la tua bontà; ricevendo dalla sua bocca
le parole di vita, si riempie della tua sapienza; scoprendo le insondabili
profondità del suo cuore, si accende del fuoco dello Spirito, effuso sui
nuovi figli; guardando il suo corpo piagato venera quel sangue prezioso
che la rende pura e santa; esultando per la sua risurrezione, pregusta la
gioia delle nozze eterne.
Concedi, o Padre, che i tuoi fedeli, onorando questa sacra effigie, abbiano
gli stessi sentimenti che furono in Cristo Gesù, e, dopo aver portato
l'immagine dell'uomo terreno, rispecchino finalmente quella dell'uomo
celeste. Il Figlio tuo, o Padre, sia per tutti noi la via che ci fa salire a te, la
verità che ci illumina, la vita che ci nutre e ci rinnova, la luce che
rischiara il cammino, la pietra su cui possiamo riposare, la porta che

You, O Lord our King, to send the grace of your Holy Spirit, together with
your angel, on this holy icon so that every prayer which is offered to You
here may be accepted by the grace, mercy and compassion of your onlybegotten son, our Lord, God and Saviour, Jesus Christ.

2 Corinthians 4:1-10
Therefore, since it is by God’s mercy that we are engaged in this ministry,
we do not lose heart. We have renounced the shameful things that one
hides; we refuse to practice cunning or to falsify God’s word; but by the
open statement of the truth we commend ourselves to the conscience of
everyone in the sight of God. And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled
to those who are perishing. In their case the god of this world has blinded
the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the
gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. For we do not
proclaim ourselves; we proclaim Jesus Christ as Lord and ourselves as
your slaves for Jesus’ sake. For it is the God who said, “Let light shine out
of darkness,” who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the
knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. But we have
this treasure in clay jars, so that it may be made clear that this
extraordinary power belongs to God and does not come from us. We are
afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to
despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not
destroyed; always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life
of Jesus may also be made visible in our bodies.
