Si è proceduto in linea con la prEN “Buildings components and elements – In situ measurement of the surface thermal resistance”. Swieradow Zdroj, Poland, September 1998. Plate fin heat sinks operating in a thermally and hydrodynamically developing laminar condition flow are analysed with the objective to determine the value of the optimal fin spacing which gives the maximum heat transfer rate. Calculations are both carried out by an extension of the unidirectional conduction model approach used for constant cross-section fins in an isothermal fluid flow and do not take into account the complex flow pattern due to air flow by-pass phenomena. 15) F. Gugliermetti and S. Grignaffini “Direct approach to the design of plate fin heat sinks stack cooled by forced convection”. 2nd Electronics Packaging Technology Conference EPCT’98. Singapore, December 1998. Fined heat sinks are generally used to dissipate the heat produced in electronic components on printed circuit boards. Complex heat sinks can only be studied experimentally or with CFD code; when both the fin shapes are not very complex in their shapes and some peculiar geometrical constraints are present, the maximum heat transfer optimization can be reached directly. Direct sizing method are usually applied to the thermal design of heat exchangers. Plate Fin Heat Sinks (PLFHS’s), operating in thermally and hydrodynamically developing laminar flow, are analyzed in this paper with the objective both to determine directly the value of the fin spacing that gives the maximum heat transfer and to take into account the main parameters which influence the thermal performance. The optimization is carried out by a mathematical approach which underlines the possibility of using, within an engineering acceptable approximation, an extension of the thermal efficiency concept used in the heat transfer calculation for a constant cross-section fin in an isothermal fluid flow . 16) P. Rome, September 1999. In this work we are going to describe an alternative approach to the acoustical design of a new multipurpose hall in Rome, “L’Auditorium del Massimo”. The hall, with 870 seats, was designed to perform different kind of activities: congresses, concerts, drama and movies. First, with the aid of a simulation software, a preliminary model was developed, followed by a stage of empirical set up where panels were added or removed to test the hall acoustics without modifying the room architecture. The required absorbent units were installed mainly on the ceiling using a single structure consisting of an array of guides where low cost panels (baffles) were hanged behind an open double roof. The second part of this work refers to the acoustical quality assessment of the hall: several measures were made to verify the design parameters and to test the room acoustics using consolidated methodologies. 17) A. de Lieto Vollaro, S. A passive air conditioning system, simply made up of a natural circulation loop with heat exchanging component for the temperature control of remote locations is proposed. The effect of the structure and layout of the heat exchangers on the performance of the system is evaluated by means of a numerical model that takes into account accurately the thermophysical properties of the room and of the passive system. The heat exchangers are optimised as to their layout and to the extended surfaces properties, size and spacing. It is shown that the system performance depends not only on the size of the heat exchanging surfaces, but also on the heat storage capacity of the system and on the components layout, and that even minor changes in the flow regime of the natural circulation loop may affect considerably the maximum values of the room air temperature. 18) F. An experimental study on the illuminance distribution and on the local Daylight Factors (DF) due to the shafts, used to assure natural ventilation in a multi-level underground car parking areas, is presented. Experimental measurements are referred to a scale model (1:12.5) in which it is possible to change the shape of the external openings; experimental measurements are carried out in an unobstructed place and with a CIE overcast sky. Experimental measurements are compared with the results obtained by the light simulation program Radiance. Specific attention is paid to testing the accuracy of the simulation respect to the experimental results in order to predict the DF’s also in the cases not directly experimented. Experimental and numerical results are summarized in some design figures, in order to create a tool which can be utilized to optimize the Energy consumption of the artificial lighting system taking into account also the ventilation requirements prescribed by local and national code. 20) G. The heat exchangers are optimized as to their layout and to the extended surfaces properties, size and spacing. It is shown that the system performance depends not only on the size of the heat exchanging surfaces, but also on the heat storage capacity of the system and on the component layout, and that some cases nonuniqueness of the velocity and temperature field in the circulation loop may occur. 21) F. Gugliermetti, S. Grignaffini and P.P. dell’Omo “Shafts for natural light and ventilation in underground automobile parking areas”. 5th International Conference Urban Transport and the Environment for the 21st Century. Rhodes, Greece, September 1999. In large cities, where space is at premium and the use of private cars is extensive, multi-level underground automobile parking garages are greatly required. Garages require natural and, in same case, also a mechanical ventilation as the operation of automobiles presents serious concerns linked to the emission of fumes with the presence both of carbon monoxide and of gasoline and oils, with risks for the human health and fire hazard. Most national codes and fire protection organizations fix a required area, expressed as percent of the floor area, for free external openings to permit natural ventilation; requirements for natural ventilation, are in the range of 2-5% of the floor area. From a practical point of view, the most designed and built underground parking areas use generally lateral ventilation shafts and/or sinks and have a regular plane shape with a level height kept at the minimum in the limit of the code prescriptions. The aspects linked to the natural illumination are generally not taken into account by codes, as the required level of illumination are provided by artificial light systems; then the links between natural ventilation and illumination due to the external openings are not yet extensively analysed. A theoretical study on the illuminance distribution and of natural ventilation is presented for shafts of different configurations. Theoretical study is carried out by a CFD code for the ventilation aspects, while illumination is vaulted by the light simulation program Radiance. Theoretical results are partially supported by experimental measurements: daylighting aspects are studied in a scale model (1:20), while natural ventilation are investigated in its phenomenological aspects by some fume distribution investigations carried out in some full scale underground garages. The results are summarized in some design figures, in order to create a tool which can be utilized to optimise the natural lighting and ventilation. L’Aquila, Settembre 1999. 24) F. The main hall is a long parallelepiped space (dimensions: 11 m x 18 m x 22 m), which will be divided in two Auditoria with dimensions settled in accordance with the market demand and the acoustical qualities of the space. Among all the possibilities we have tested 5 different halls, characterised by length variable between 50 and 116 meters: in each hall a system of reflectors arranged over the public has been designed to reinforce the contribution of early reflections and reduce the acoustical volume for different purposes. The halls have been classified using simulation software output, subsequently elaborated to obtain complex evaluation parameters. The aim of the study is to understand how the length increase affects the space quality and which is the limit over that the hall is practically unsuitable for not amplified performances. 27) M. In present work fluid-dynamic behavior of plan isotherm and axisymmetric three-dimensional turbulent air jets in free field has been developed. The study has been led by means of a fluid- dynamic numeric analysis (CFD) with particular attention to discretization type and boundary conditions influence on mathematical solution. Velocity variation along jet axis and on transversal sections has been determined; then results have been compared with data available in literature. Fluid-dynamic jets behavior has been studied with particular attention on entrainment and mutual influence among two or more jets, in accordance with their distance, with the aim of giving useful information about velocity field for ventilation plants project and construction. Mathematical model defined for two-dimensional and axisymmetric three-dimensional problems led us to good results; so in next works the methodology will be extended to three-dimensional phenomena. 28) A. de Lieto Vollaro, S. Grignaffini, A. Vallati “Comportamento di diffusori a microugelli in ambienti confinati: simulazioni numeriche”. 55° Congresso Nazionale ATI. Bari e Matera, . Settembre 2000. 30) A. de Lieto Vollaro, S. The goal of this paper is the study of the behaviour of an airflow generated by multiple jets and introduced into an indoor environment. The study was conducted numerically trough of a finite volumes mathematical model, wherein the equations have been linearised in implicit form and the domain has been presented in its discrete elements using the finite volume method (Fluent release 5.1). The numerical simulation was performed by creating unstructured computational grids. The findings thus obtained were then compared to experimental data obtained from an extensive series of measurements taken in a model environment set-up in the laboratory of the Department of Technical Physics at the University of Rome, “La Sapienza”. The purpose of this work is to obtain reliable information pertaining to the velocity field generated by batteries of jets with the aid of a scientifically sound model. 31) A. de Lieto Vollaro, G. Reykjavik, Iceland, June 2001. Outdoor lighting design software is based on many simplified hypotheses related to material reflection properties, building morphology, reflection contribution of surrounding surfaces (such as the ground, other building facades, trees, etc.) and sky (variable with atmospheric conditions). The aim of this paper is to evaluate in different conditions the above discrepancies in order to determine a work method to minimize them. These imprecision will be shown in relation to numerical and graphical output, comparing a significant set of rendering obtained with different levels of accuracy in a geometrical model construction and varying solution parameters. Solution accuracy depends on many parameters set by the designer, each of which can significantly influence the calculation. Nonetheless only some of these parameters are strictly connected with result precision, and so they deserve particular attention. The present paper presents a method for the acoustical characterization of the territory in the presence of sources deriving from transport infrastructures and from fixed sources such as industrial sites. Such a method allows the identification of the principal sound sources in relation to the global level, characterizing each source as a function of its effective acoustical importance. The method is based on the identification of emitting spectrum nearby sound sources, and on the comparison between measured spectrum at receiving points and computed spectrum in the same points, as result of elaboration of emitting spectrum with the evaluation of the phenomena concerning open-space propagation (e.g. divergence, air and ground absorption, etc.). 34) M. Coppi, S. Grignaffini “Acoustical comfort evaluation inside urban public buses”. 8th International Congress on Sound and Vibration, Hong Kong, China, July 2001. The problem of evaluating the acoustical comfort inside vehicles is not completely resolved yet. Some references, especially for railway-carriages, are generically related to LA levels. The procedure elaborated in our laboratory for the evaluation of the acoustical comfort inside buses for urban transportation takes into account the A weighted sound level and the speech interference level. In order to show both these aspects in a meaningful way, a two-dimensional plotting diagram has been used. On the two axes are reported the A sound level and a parameter SI (Spectrum Index). So it is possible to plot on the diagram three boundary lines corresponding to the speech level of 69 dB, 75 dB and 81 dB. These lines separate two zones of acceptable and unacceptable acoustical comfort. In order to validate the method, it is necessary to perform subjective tests, which could allow to plot equal contour lines of comfort level. In this first step of the research, only few tests were performed in order to verify the congruence of the calculated boundary lines. 35) A. de Lieto Vollaro, S. Grignaffini, A. The study was conducted using a finite volumes mathematical model, in which the equations have been linearised in implicit form and the domain has been presented in its discrete elements using the finite volume method (Fluent release 5.4). The numerical simulation was performed by creating unstructured computational grids. The findings thus obtained were then compared to experimental data consisting of an extensive series of measurements taken in a model environment set-up in the laboratory of the Department of Technical Physics at the University of Rome, “La Sapienza”. By mapping the air flow field of an occupied room in terms of mean air velocity and temperature, it has been possible to evaluate the comfort level perceived by occupants of that room. The purpose of this work is to obtain reliable information about to the velocity and temperature fields generated by batteries of jets with the aid of a scientifically sound model. 36) F. Gugliermetti, S. Grignaffini “Shafts for Daylighting Underground Spaces: Sizing Guidelines”. Int. Journal of Lighting Research and Technology 33,3 pp. 183-195, (2001). This paper presents an experimental study on Daylight Factors (DF’s) distribution in underground multi-level open spaces which use continuous light shafts to reduce energy consumption by the artificial lighting system and to improve the human acceptability of the spaces. Experimental measurements were carried out in a scale model, which could be assembled to provide different shapes and could be placed in an unobstructed site. The use of a real sky, which very seldom shows a fully overcast CIE luminance distribution, required the development of a special procedure to guarantee the accuracy of the experimental results. Level height, slab floor thickness, aspect ratio and glass covering of the light shaft were some of the parameters considered. Measured DF’s were correlated by dimensionless parameters and reported in the form of charts which can be used to size the width of the shafts on the basis of the required illuminance and on the frequency distribution of the diffuse natural illuminance. An example of DF’s calculation for an underground space is also reported. 37) A. de Lieto Vollaro, G. Galli, S. Grignaffini, F. Asdrubali, C. Buratti, S. Ortica “Misura della resistenza termica di pareti in muratura”. 56° Congresso Nazionale ATI. Napoli, Settembre 2001. 38) G. International Lighting Congress CIE. Istanbul, September 2001. The aim of this work is to highlight the use of reliable software as an essential aspect of the lighting planning for external environments, for a rational use of energy and a reduction of sky glow. The software normally used for outdoor planning does not consider the background light and the reflections of light on adjacent surfaces. It demonstrates to be acceptable when the region taken into consideration is located as far as possible from vertical surfaces, such as buildings, and horizontal surfaces have high values of reflectance. This is the case of highways, or state roads, where the contribution of reflected radiation results marginal or nil. Instead, in all other conditions the simulation would proceed to overestimate the luminous flux and the instalment of the electrical power. This paper tries to suggest a standard in the evaluation of corrective parameters on simulated Illuminance values in order to avoid overestimating the luminous flux. 40) F. Gugliermetti, S. Grignaffini, F. Bisegna “Computer simulations, full and scale model measurements as design tools to assess Daylight Factors in underground open spaces”. International Lighting Congress CIE. Istanbul, September 2001. In the urban context of large cities, underground spaces can reduce street level occupancy. Problems connected with these spaces are the human sense of seclusion in absence of daylight and, consequentially, a refuse of the environment. The amenity of the space can be improved guaranteeing little quantities of daylight by making suitable external openings. The paper deal with a comparison in terms of daylight factors among a series of numerical evaluations, physical models appositely built up, and two different full-scale underground open spaces, in case of overcast sky. The aim is to understand how sensible are the forecasts obtained with numerical and scale models in comparison with a real full-scale model measurement. The results are quite encouraging, as numerical calculations are very close to physical model, and both to full–scale space measurements. 41) S. Grignaffini, M. Coppi, M. Seville, Spain, March 2002. The purpose of this work is to assess through numerical analysis the thermofluidynamic conditions in underground railway and road tunnels following a fire, so as to implement a mathematical model that could be used in the future to identify a security indicator associated with every tunnel. The phenomenon of the thermal field has been assessed through a numerical analysis by way of the software Fluent 5.3. The mathematical model utilized has been applied in comparing the results available in literature relative to noted experiments taken in a tunnel, in relation to a fire of small dimensions, racing a maximum power of 2.5MW for reasons tied to the feasability of the carrying out of measurement in the field. Our mathematical model though, once validated, will be able to simulate fires of greater dimensions in which the thermal field and the temperatures reach the limit values of the stability of the structures. The comparisons were made between some points positioned at different distances from the hearth and at different heights from the road. An attempt was made to reproduce the natural ventilation conditions present within the tunnel and special attention was given to the discretization grid to which an independent solution was obtained from what was chosen. The results reached were in accordance with the amount experimented with, allowing to assume the possibility to utilize this mathematical model for other underground and road tunnels, assessing in particular, the eventual labor necessary to carry out complete security. 44) S. In this paper the behavior of air flow generated from a set of multiple jets placed in an office with a surface area of 10m2 has been studied. The obtained results, through a preliminary numeric study, has been compared with those experimentally studied utilizing an experimental apparatus prepared in the laboratory of the Department of Technical Physics at “La Sapienza” University of Rome. Through such study, it was possible to assess the value of air velocity so as to verify the comfort conditions for the occupants at all points of the room. In particular, on a set of longitudinal and transverse planes to the injection axis, the values numerically extracted with those experimentally measured were compared, so as to verify the effective distribution of air in the occupied zone. The quality of obtained results authorizes to expand the use of the numerical approach during the planning of aeraulic plants designed to achieve high levels of environmental comfort. 45) S. Grignaffini, A. Vallati “Design Of Air Distribution System In A Train Coach Dedicated To Sick Persons”. Roomvent 2002 Air Distribution in Rooms. Eight International Conference. Copenhagen Denmark September 2002. In this paper the air distribution within a train coach containing stretchers has been studied by using numerical simulations to optimize the distribution system in order to guarantee to the patient comfortable transport conditions, lasting even up to several hours. The importance of a correct air distribution and therefore a correct cleanliness of the environment, is such for not only being in an enclosed environment but an environment where the affected occupants are not well. The air distribution system studied entails the use of high induction created by means of emission from above located micro jets, in such a way to maintain a speed in the air within the zones occupied under the limits of norm, avoiding air currents, and at the same time taking advantage of the induction effect, in order to accomplish complete cleaning of the environment. The idea of the moveable micro jets is to allow, wherever necessary, the personalization of the air jets. This new approach is created from the increasing need of the Italian Railways, to guarantee a transport service for the patient, above all, for the need of the pilgrimages, where the patients can travel with the assurance of being in comfortable conditions. The numerical model used is a segregated model in which the equations are linear in an implicit form, and the domain has been presented in its discrete elements using the finite volumes method. The numeric simulation has been executed by using the software Fluent release 5.4 and creating structured computational grids. The aim of such a preliminary numeric model has therefore been to optimize the installation of air distribution for coaches containing stretchers which in a short time will be installed and which subsequently will be experimentally verified. 46) M. Frascarolo, S. Grignaffini, “Comparison Between Optic and Energetic Performances of Close Diffusers and Drilled Plates”. CIE - Light & Lighting 2002 International Conference. Bucarest, Romania November 2002. Modern luminaries use different systems in order to diffuse light, avoiding glare. The most frequently used materials are opal glass or translucent plastic as these materials exhibit the maximum degree of light scatter with the minimum amount of absorption. These materials, which are suitable for industrial applications, are not always appreciated for architectural purposes. An interesting alternative is represented by sand-blasted glass, fabrics, drilled plates with different hole shapes and dimensions. The choice of the diffuser involves different performances connected to the following aspects: Luminance of the surface, luminaire efficiency, infrared and ultraviolet transmission. In particular in this paper we are interested to solutions that guarantee high transparency for light together with a low transmission of ultraviolet radiations and a good diffusive behaviour. That is in order to select solutions for applications in which comfort for people and conservation of materials are important. With regard to discontinuous materials, such as drilled plates, a particular attention has been dedicated to study the effect of hole shapes and dimensions on the diffuser performances. The test apparatus is composed by a dark room, 1 floodlight and numerous samples of close diffusers and drilled plates. 47) M. Coppi, S. Aim of this study is to perform a compared analysis among the possible environmental scenarios within the nearby areas of the urban railways, as a function of both the residual noise and of the polluting capacity of the urban railways itself, with the scope of determining the effective noise pollution level to which the population is exposed. The following processing refers both to the limitations envisaged in accordance with the Italian regulation and to a campaign of phonometric measurements performed on the Rome Underground Line. The processed diagrams permit a detailed analysis of the problem and can represent an useful tool to manage the acoustic mitigation interventions necessary to keep the noise figure perceived by the exposed population within the limits fixed by the sanitary standards. 48) M. Coppi, S. Grignaffini, A. Guglielmo “Environmental Noise Impact of Urban Railways”. 10th International Congress on Sound and Vibration, Stockholm, Sweden, July 2003. The study of the environmental impact of urban railways regards mainly the noise generated by trains. Italian standards provide territorial pertinence zones (for the outer centreline and for each side of the railway tracks), inside which specific absolute limit values of noise introduction produced by the same infrastructure are permitted. Therefore, according to provisions in these areas, the noise evaluation has to be performed only referring to the infrastructure contribution, without evaluating other acoustic sources in the same areas. As a consequence, in the pertinence zones, the imposed limits for the infrastructure presence and the limits imposed by the acoustic municipal zoning, taking into account the acoustic impact of the others sources, are valid simultaneously, but separately when evaluating the acoustic impact. The following processing refers both to the limitations envisaged in accordance with the Italian regulation and to a campaign of phonometric measurements performed on the Rome Underground Line. The processed diagrams permit a detailed analysis of the problem and can represent a useful tool to manage the acoustic mitigation interventions. 49) M. Coppi, G. Moncada Lo Giudice, S. Grignaffini, A. Guglielmo “Determination of Acoustic Isolation in Civil Buildings in Areas Nearby Airports”. 10th International Congress on Sound and Vibration, Stockholm, Sweden, July 2003. Territorial and urban planning in areas nearby airports, should consider the level of noise pollution so as to identify specific territorial pertinence zones or areas subject to particular urban limitations. Three zones are generally identified with specific absolute limit values of noise, and with opportune limitations on the use of territory. As to the admitted noise levels, opportune acoustic indicators are used to monitor the annual average pollution produced by airport infrastructures. Concerning territorial planning, three areas of respect are considered. The first area, is assigned to activities connected to the use and the services of the airport infrastructures. The area in the middle is reserved to specific civil activities not connected to airport facilities, and the buildings in these zones must be subject to the adoption of opportune acoustic isolation measures. Last, there is a more external area where no specific limit values are provided, apart from the airport’s maximum level of pollution. A compared analysis between the values of the noise pollution index of the airport area and the levels of acoustic isolation on civil buildings is very important for town planning and for the maintenance of adeguate acoustic levels inside living environments (this applies, especially, to the middle area). This paper, referring to the LVA index provided by Italian standards, indicates a method for the determination of the isolation degree to adopt in civil buildings in areas nearby airports. This method allows a rational urban and territorial planning. The assumption of the LVA doesn’t guarantee a complete indoor acoustic well-being, because this is only an average value. The possibility to use as external index the maximum LAMAX level reached by the event, assuming the criteria of the maximum acceptable noise level, is here discussed. 50) F. Asdrubali, G. Grignaffini “Measurement of the Thermal Resistance of Masonry Walls” – Heat and Technology – Dicembre 2003. In the present paper, a methodology to measure the thermal resistance of walls and the results for three masonry walls are presented. Measurements were carried out by using two thermal chambers with different volumes, separated from the wall for which the thermal resistance was evaluated. A thermal gradient between the two chambers was determined, to attain heat transfer through the wall. The calculation of the thermal resistance was carried out by measuring the difference between the surface temperatures of the warm and the cold side of the wall and the thermal flux. The measurement were carried out in steady state, following the indications of EN 1934, and in variable regimen, in compliance with prEN 12494, so to compare the two methodologies. Results show that they give the same values of the thermal resistance, therefore the variable regimen methodology could be employed for in situ thermal resistance measurements. 52) A. de Lieto Vollaro, R. de Lieto Vollaro, P. This paper presents the work that has been performed for setting up a new apparatus for thermal conductivity measurements. The instrument is based on the guarded hot-plate method and has been designed and realised at the Fisica Tecnica Department of Rome University La Sapienza, with the aim of using it for calibration of commercial heat flow meters. This new apparatus has been realised in accordance with the standard ISO8302:1991 “Thermal insulation – Determination of steady – state thermal resistance and related properties – Guarded hot plate apparatus” and is an asymmetric single-specimen apparatus. The performed tests allowed the verification that the employed technical choices have led to repeatable and reliable measurement results. This new apparatus is characterised by a much lower realisation cost than comparable commercial or research instruments and this has been permitted by the implementation of technical solutions whose effectiveness has been verified in this work. The measurements realised with known-conductivity specimens are quite encouraging: a satisfactory isothermal condition, both for cold and plates, has been found and measured conductivity values are in accordance with tested materials certifications. 53) S. The paper describes an experimental plant aimed at simulating and verifying the performances of a single-stage H2O-LiBr absorption machine. The machine is water cooled and it is supplied by hot water produced by an electrical boiler, it is possible to simulate different service conditions by varying the temperatures and the flow rate of water in the external circuits. Measurement facilities allow to record in real time all the main operating parameters of internal and external circuits (temperatures, pressures and flow rates). The paper illustrates the characteristics of the machine and of the plant and the results of various experimental campaigns. In particular, the acquisitions on the plant have tested different service conditions by varying the flow rate and the supplying hot water; the energy and energy performances of the plant are presented and compared with data from literature and from a simulation code developed for the plant. The results show that the absorption machine can work, with acceptable efficiency, with input temperatures of about 65-70 °C; this results is interesting for a future supply of the machine with solar energy. 55) S. Vallati “A study of the influence of the vegetation on the climatic conditions in an urban environment” – Third International Conference on Sustainable Development and Planning, Algarve, Portugal, April 2007. This work was about the study of the variations of the climatic parameters in an urban area bordering a green area. The problem of the great urbanization of the territory led to the registration of high temperatures in the cities, during the summer. Such a phenomenon, called “heat island”, is caused by the employment of those materials used for the urbanization of the territory, that have different responses to the solar radiations that influences the naked soil or on a soil with vegetation. Actually, the presence of a green area in a territory strongly urbanized changes its environmental parameters and those of a bordering zone. In particular, it is possible to record the variation of air and soil temperature and the variation of the wind speed and direction. It as been studied a typical urban context, in which a green area is surrounded by an urbanized area constituted by buildings, car parks and streets totally asphalted. Then the effect of different types of vegetation on the urban area climate has been evaluated, with the help of numerical analysis, and, moreover, the influence area of a specific green area on the bordering urban context has been studied. The computational model employed is the software ENVI-MET that successfully reproduces the interaction among urban surfaces, the vegetation and the atmosphere. The outcomes achieved help to understand how a green area modifies a city climate, making an area climatically more benign both under the comfort point of view for the people living there and under the energetic point of view. 57) S. Grignaffini, A. Vallati “Air distribution system in an air traffic control tower” – Roomvent 2007, Helsinki, Finland, June 2007. This work, through the outcomes obtained by a numerical analysis and the realization of a campaign of preliminary experimental measures inside some Air Traffic Control Towers different among themselves for size and type, has come to the conclusion that it is necessary to develop a new air distribution system inside a working environment and in a place where activities that require high levels of concentration, such as that of Air Traffic Control Tower’s , are performed. The analysis of how to optimize the thermo-hygrometric well being inside the operational environment of the air-traffic control towers was developed through a collaboration between ENAV S.p.A. and the Department of Technical Physics of the University of Rome “La Sapienza”. ENAV(National Body of Flight Assistance Italy) must guarantee the best working conditions in the operational rooms of Air Traffic Control Towers which are environments with a special geometry, constitution and with a particular activity inside: so there is the need to impose the establishment of general criteria that are also extremely precise for the technological systems they are provided with. For this purpose, the evaluation of the thermal working environment and, in particular, the identification of some environmental factors such as temperature, relative humidity, air velocity and the average radiant temperature of the walls, have an important role in the study. The microclimatic conditions obtained in the environment will guarantee conditions of thermal comfort through the evaluation of these parameters. The special configuration of the air-traffic control towers, the type of activity that is performed inside of their operational rooms and the presence of sophisticated electronic devices envisage a non traditional evaluation which uses a numerical analysis as the optimization tool of the parameters that are fundamental to obtain comfort conditions in the environment. The above mentioned numerical analysis applied in the designing phase allows the assessment of different types of air distribution systems, so to obtain the thermohygrometric comfort conditions in each corner of the occupied area. The performance of different terminals has also been verified in order to obtain a clean environment , keeping the maximum air velocity near the occupants under control. Some indexes listed in the law in force have been used to choose the position and the type of the terminals for the diffusion of the air: Draught Risk (DR), PMV, PPD, through which some useful information on the efficacy of the ventilation in the environment subject of this study has been gathered. Finally, the importance of the employment of thermo-fluid-dynamic simulations for the best design of an air distribution system for non conventional environments, like air-traffic control towers are, has been identified, allowing for the reduction of time and of the costs related to the designing phase. 58) M. This work addresses the issue of transportation of perishable foodstuffs, regulated by the Agreement on the International Carriage of Perishable Foodstuffs and on the Special Equipment to be Used for such Carriage, also known as ATP Agreement, stipulated in Geneva on September 1st 1970 and recently reviewed on November 7th 2003. Italy adhered to the above mentioned Agreement through Law n. 264 of May 2nd 1977. The ATP Agreement imposes on those who transport perishable frozen and deep-frozen foodstuffs in general, among or within contracting States, the usage of tyre or rail transportation means able to guarantee the temperature control of the produces throughout the whole journey. In order to apply the ATP Agreement, the Directorate-General for Road Traffic and Privately Operated Transport Services (Direzione Generale della Motorizzazione Civile) has supplied all of its CPAs (Auto-vehicles Testing Centers) with climatic tunnel chambers. Since this is an issue strictly linked to Technical Physics, a collaboration between the Technical Physics Department and the Centre for Auto-vehicles and Devices Research and Testing of the Ministry of Transport is being promoted. Such a partnership is aimed at defining improving hardware and software tools to be implemented in the testing machineries. 61) S.Grignaffini, S. Cappellanti, A. This research aims at realising a shutter prototype which would allow the containment of the summer heating load in non-residential buildings. With its positioning at the height of the envisaged holes and its particular geometrical shape, this prototype will replace the standard vertical shutter with one containing glass-block with a sharp inclination with respect to the incidence of the sun rays in the summer time. A measurement campaign is envisaged in order to optimize the glass inclination with respect to the incidence of the sun rays both during the winter and the summer time and the width of the horizontal anti-dazzle screen placed at the top of the shutter. The lack of mobile or steady anti-dazzle screens ensures a perfect view of the external surroundings; in addition to this, the standard levels envisaged for by the existing regulations on natural lighting on the back wall will not be altered. The aim of this work is that of providing a passive element which could concretely guarantee a high level of acoustic and visual comfort, and a proper ventilation in indoor non-residential environments. 62) R. de Lieto Vollaro, S.Grignaffini, A. Vallati “Numerical analysis and measures for the evaluation of comfort inside buses used for public transport” – Urban Transport 2008, Malta, September 2008. This work analyses the thermo hygrometric conditions inside buses used for public transport. The technical solutions found through the analysis of the thermo-hygrometric conditions inside trains, were also set out and extended to buses. This was in order to maximize the conditioning system and the installation of the air distribution terminals. A pattern for the simulation of the thermo fluid dynamics has been researched, in order to evaluate possible improvements in the conditioning system or in the distribution system. The summer time is the most critical period in the Year for public transport. This fact is due to the frequent opening of doors which makes the internal temperature uneven, due to the strong air drafts. It is also important to assess the cooling transition which can often be long and unbearable for passengers inside. The simulation pattern produced with Airpack 2.1 (Fluent) software, was then validated with a series of measures and used for the analysis of the main issues concerning discomfort. It was also used for the finalization of the improvements. This assessment addresses the fundamental problem that takes place at a bus stop when passengers exit and enter. It has been compared to the solution studied for installing doors equipped with air screens (or air screened doors). The thermo fluid dynamic results guarantee a significant improvement in thermo-hygrometric comfort. 63) S.Grignaffini, S. Cappellanti, A. Cefalo “Bioclimatic design, assisted by numerical simulation in a transient state” – 4th International Buildings Physics Conference, Istanbul, Turkey, June 2009. The bioclimatic design aims to realize designing, localizative technological, plant-engineering choices, in order to have a housing model that satisfies comfort requisites through microclimate passive control and the control of the energy for heating plants. The study in this field is booming and, thanks to fast and effective calculation systems, the researchers can achieve reliable outcomes in reasonable times. Starting by a good thermal-energetic design and a bit of intuition, the bioclimatic design issue has been tackled scientifically and systematically. So, we reached specific and general conclusions useful to quantify and select the most used techniques in this field. Our work doesn’t aim at a strict demonstration but at a study through which verify, understand and increase the knowledge of thermal-energetic phenomenon of building-environmental interaction. Many of the simulations in transient state have been made on matters we considered the most influential on the global behaviours of residential buildings. The matters on which we focused are: thermal cover (thermal insulation and inertia), glazed surfaces, and screenings (static and mobile), in direct geothermal energy, vent (natural and artificial, diurnal and nocturnal). All this work has the aim to create the right balance between natural cooling and heating during a while year, in order to guarantee thermal comfort to residents, thereby decreasing to a minimum the use of plants during the summer and the winter. The consequent designing-technical choices come from scrupulous interpretation of the outcomes, achieved by extrapolating from generic treatment the compatibility with the climatic conditions. In this perspective, the authors, with the research, are using their knowledge’s to get innovative outcomes and integrate the research with empirical matters. 67) S. Grignaffini, M. Romagna, D. Principia “Improving building energy efficiency: case study” - Energy and Sustainability 2011 - WIT Transactions on Ecology and the Environment, Alicante - Spain, April 2011 The main purpose of this study was to conduct a study for improving energy efficiency of an important building in Rome, Headquarter of Italian State Monopoly. The study was conducted by comparing conventional analysis tools with innovative ones, in order to evaluate the possible solutions, both structural and plant, aimed at the use of renewable sources and at energy saving. After making thermo graphic survey, the first and useful step for a good energy audit, conduct building energy was simulated, at first in steady state by the use of a software widely used at the professional level, then in transient state by the use of TRNSYS, a finite difference method software which is able to simulate more accurately conduct building energy. Next step was to propose possible redevelopment of structural and energy plant that promote the building energy rating higher, finding the right balance between the energetic and economic aspect. Among the interventions plant, two possible workarounds have been proposed and designed in detail: installation of a Photovoltaic System; installation of a Solar Cooling System. Both solutions lead to a reduction of electricity consumption with a significant impact in economic and environmental terms. 68) S. Grignaffini, M. Romagna “Lighting study for Air Traffic Control Towers” - Light 2011 - WIT Transactions on the Built Environment, Poznan - Poland, May 2011 The purpose of this work was to determine the characteristics of glass and natural and artificial lighting systems capable of achieving, within the operating rooms of the air traffic control towers, the optimal conditions in terms of visual performance and comfort, within a framework established by law, from energy conservation, the availability of materials, ease of maintenance, security. The solutions identified, although the result of a compromise between different environmental and functional requirements often conflict with each other, were still subject to the need to ensure the proper and safe view of the external environment by air traffic controllers. The methodology, given the complexity of the problems arising from the interaction between various parameters, is based on different and successive levels of detail, each of which is in preparation of the next. In particular, starting from a lumped parameter-analysis that considers only the global aspects of the problem and identifies the main characteristics of materials and systems used, is followed by a study of distributed parameter to analyze in detail the visual aspects and solutions possible, before arriving in the creation of design specifications whose validity has been verified by studying a case type. The different levels of analysis can be summarized as follows: Lumped parameter analysis; Distributed parameter analysis: visual environment; Distributed parameter analysis: case study; Design specifications: transparent materials. 69) S. Grignaffini, M. Romagna, A. Cefalo “Solar Cooling: a Case Study” - ROOMVENT 2011: 12th International Conference on Air Distribution Rooms, Trondheim, Norway, June 2011 Throughout the years various methods for heat prevention and indoor temperatures control in the summer have been used. The alternative cooling strategies are based on various passive and low energy cooling technologies for protection of the buildings via design measures or special components to moderate the thermal gains, or to reject the excess heat to the ambient environment. All these techniques aim to reduce summer cooling loads and electricity demand for air conditioning. During the summer the demand for electricity increases because of the extensive use of heating ventilation air conditioning (HVAC) systems, which increase the peak electric load, causing major problems in the electric supply. The energy shortage is worse during ‘dry’ years because of the inability of the hydroelectric power stations to function and cover part of the peak load. The use of solar energy to drive cooling cycles for space conditioning of most buildings is an attractive concept, since the cooling load coincides generally with solar energy availability and therefore cooling requirements of a building are roughly in phase with the solar incidence. Solar cooling systems have the advantage of using absolutely harmless working fluids such as water, or solutions of certain salts. They are energy efficient and environmentally safe. The purpose of this paper is to describe a Solar Cooling System to be installed on the roof of a building in Rome, the headquarters of the State Monopoly. The medium size power plant is composed of the following components: Solar Collectors; Thermal Storage Tank; Absorption Chiller. The plant design is based on a dynamic simulation in TRNSYS, a dynamic simulation tool used by engineers all over the world to make energy calculations in a transient state.
