Introduction Every return to the work of Sts. Cyril and Methodius represents a rediscovery of the foundations of our spirituality and the epistemological axis leading towards the source of our being. As a synthesis of the Graeco-Roman culture of the Mediterranean and the Near-Eastern legacy of the Jewish, Coptic, Persian and Syrian cultures, the Byzantine civilization was the single most important building block for the spiritual edification of the Slavic peoples of the Orthodox faith. In a fundamental sense, the mission of Sts. Cyril and Methodius represents a transmission of the cultural models and civilizational patterns of Byzantium and their transplantation into Slavic soil. By accepting the Byzantine cultural models, the Slavic peoples of Orthodox faith became integrated into the larger Byzantine meta-historical and cosmopolitan community. In essence, we are speaking of an adoption of a general semantic system of Byzantium which rests on shared symbols and metaphors that bring together different manifestations of the Byzantine culture, ranging from literature and theology, to architecture, painting, and music. As His Holiness Blessed Pope John Paul II affirmed in his famous encyclical Slavorum Apostoli of 1985, these two brothers of Thessaloniki were recognized in 1980 as co-patrons of Europe on account of their ecumenical work, together with St. Benedict of Nursia, the founder of western monasticism. The inclusion of the Slavic peoples of Orthodox faith in the Byzantine spiritual community is by no means a mere imitation by epigones. Rather, it signifies the creation of an authentic model of a “Byzantinism.” Macedonia is an integral part of Slavia Orthodoxa, to borrow the term that the renowned Italian Slavicist Riccardo Picchio used for the spiritual community of Orthodox Slavs, in which the Old Church Slavonic language synthetizes and unifies at a higher spiritual level the most subtle and fundamental ideas of the Byzantine civilization. The origins of Slavonic literacy in Macedonia can be traced to the ninth decade of the ninth century, which coincides with the arrival of St. Clement of Ohrid (886 A.D.) and his establishment of the Ohrid literary school. Over the following centuries, the literary centers set up on the territory of our country led to the creation of countless manuscripts for church services, initially written in Glagolitic script, and later in Cyrillic. The most important testimony to this development is the fact that almost all of the oldest Glagolitic and Cyrillic manuscripts from the tenth and the eleventh centuries (with some minor exceptions) were created in the literary centers associated with the Ohrid school set up by St. Clement. These significant monuments to the Christian civilization and spiritual culture have been preserved thanks to extraordinary efforts of researchers of the nineteenth century and are at present kept in various libraries and other cultural and research institutions in different European countries. From the fourth decade of the twentieth century onward, there has been continued emphasis on the preservation of the literary heritage and culture within the Republic of Macedonia. Old church books have been transferred to libraries, archives, and museums, to be safeguarded and researched by an adequate professional staff, and research laboratories for conservation and restoration of the literary heritage, old printed books and archival materials have been established. As a result of these activities, there are a number of specialized manuscript collections in several cultural and educational institutions: the National and University Library St. Clement of Ohrid, the State Archives of the Republic of Macedonia, the Philological faculty Blaze Koneski, the Theological faculty St. Clement of Ohrid, the Institute for Protection and the Museum in Ohrid, etc. The manuscripts held in these collections at present were created between the thirteenth and the nineteenth centuries. Those from the thirteenth century are primarily fragments of manuscripts on parchment, though there are also several complete parchment manuscripts datable to the end of the thirteenth and the first half of the fourteenth centuries. Two codices of this type are preserved in the collection of the National and University Library St. Clement of Ohrid in Skopje. These are the Vrutok Tetraevangelion dated to the end of the thirteenth or the beginning of the fourteenth century (D, P, MS 1) and the Kratovo Tetraevangelion from the middle of the fourteenth century (Мс 20). The majority of manuscripts in the Republic of Macedonia are codices written on paper and dated from the middle of the fourteenth century to the end of the sixteenth century. The spread of printed Old Church Slavonic books in the seventeenth and the eighteenth centuries led to stagnation in the manuscript tradition, despite another intense period of revival and development in the nineteenth century dominated by manuscripts written in vernacular and used for promulgating the church-sponsored education and strengthening of the cultural, religious, and linguistic identity of our people. This special exhibition will present a modest portion of the Slavonic literary heritage preserved in Macedonia. It will provide an opportunity for the visitors to acquaint themselves with the legacy of an ancient literary tradition whose foundations are inseparable from the work of two of the most significant disciples of Sts. Cyril and Methodius, as well as participants in the Moravian Mission – Sts. Clement and Naum of Ohrid. Dr. Ivan K. Zarov Director of the National and University Library St. Clement of Ohrid-Skopje 7 XIII-XIV secolo Frammento del triodo Quaresimale Fragment of the Lenten Triodion Il Tetravangelo di Vrutok Вруточко четвороевангелие The Tetraevangelion (The Four Gospels) from Vrutok . Ms. 1, bequest of D. Popovski. . . The Gospel contains an ornament of an eagle in flight with a halo, symbolic of John the Evangelist. In its claws, the eagle holds a folio with the initial words of the Gospel: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God”. The eagle is in a rectangular frame, drawn in red and green color. The interlacing pattern of red and white color on the yellow background creates a figure that resembles a butterfly resting on a green background. All the illuminations are in red, black, yellow and green. The script is of Bosnian type. It is known that in the 18th century the manuscript was in the monastery of the Holy Trinity, near Pljevlja, Montenegro. In 1937 Radoslav Grujić discovered the manuscript in the village of Vrutok, near Gostivar. The manuscript was bequeathed to the National and University Library “St. Clement of Ohrid” - Skopje in 1990. On f. 156 there is a note in a black frame written by the scribe saying that the election of patriarchs was performed through bribery. Hence we can conclude that the manuscript was written by an adherent of Bogomilism. 9 . . Il Tetravangelo di Vrutok, D.P. Ms. 1 Вруточко четвороевангелие, Д.П.
