Nella notte tra il 23 e il 24 giugno si celebra da molti secoli
ormai la Notte di San Giovanni, una notte ricca di magie,
misteri e influenze sulle cose, gli animali e, soprattutto, sulle
persone, tanto che da sempre essa è anche chiamata la
Notte delle Streghe. In questa notte, un tempo, si viveva
un momento magico perché essa cade nei giorni solstiziali
quando, secondo un’antica credenza, il sole si sposa con la
luna. Grazie al loro sposalizio si riversano energie benefiche
sulla terra e specialmente sulle erbe bagnate dalla rugiada,
che si trasformano in un farmaco potente “a guarire ogni guisa
di malattie cutanee”. La leggenda della notte di San Giovanni
narra che proprio in questo particolare momento astrale le
streghe si radunassero per lanciare i loro sortilegi. I più prudenti
per proteggersi si infilavano sotto gli abiti qualche erba di San
Giovanni: dall’iperico alla lavanda, dallo spicchio d’aglio colto
prima dell’alba alla verbena simbolo di pace e prosperità, fino
al ribes e all’artemisia…
Queste streghe altro non erano che giovani donne le quali, per
aiutare il sole a nascere, si riunivano nei campi e accendevano
dei fuochi, oppure, spinte da passione amorosa, raccoglievano
le erbe bagnate di rugiada, simbolo della protezione del
Battista.
La manifestazione vuole recuperare un tessuto storicopopolare di tradizioni attraverso la loro spettacolarizzazione:
con il teatro popolare di strada, un mercatino di esposizione
e vendita di oggetti, erbe officinali, pietre magiche e prodotti
naturali, l’antro delle streghe, un ambiente scenograficamente
suggestivo in cui operano cartomanti, chiromanti e indovini.
For many centuries, on the night between 23 and 24 of June is
celebrated the Night of Saint John, a night full of magic, mystery
and effects on things, animals and especially on people: this is
the reason why it is called “the Night of the Witches”. On this
night, a long time ago, people lived a magical moment because
it falls in the solstice days when, according to an ancient belief,
the sun marries the moon. Their wedding pours beneficial
energies on Earth and especially on the dewy herbs, which turns
into a powerful medication "to cure all manner of cutaneous
conditions".
The legend of the night of Saint John tells that in this peculiar
astral moment, witches gather together to perform their spells.
The most cautious ones put some St. John's herbs under their
clothes to protect themselves, like the hypericum, the lavender,
a garlic clove collected before dawn, the verben (symbol of
peace and prosperity) and the artemisia ...
These witches were nothing but young women who, in order to
help the rising sun, gathered in the fields and light the bonfires
or, led by the passion of love, picked dewy herbs, symbol of the
Baptist protection.
The event wants to recover an historical and popular fabric of
traditions through their performances: popular street theaters,
a market with exhibition and sale of objects, medicinal herbs,
magic stones and natural products and the 'Cave of the Witches,
a scenic location where soothsayers, palm readers and fortune
tellers operate.
