D FASZINATION RAUM, LICHT, AKUSTIK
Dem interdisziplinären Designstudio 13&9 aus Graz – ein Zusammenschluß der INNOCAD
Architekten und der Designerin ANASTASIA SU – ist es wichtig, auf heutige Bedürfnisse der
modernen Innenarchitektur von schallharten Räumen einzugehen. Moderne und ästhetisch
ansprechende Architektur, die auf Glas, Sichtbeton und andere harte Oberflächen setzt, kämpft
immer mit dem Problem einer optimalen Raumakustik und extrem hohen Nachhallzeiten. Das war
Ausgangsszenario und Ansporn für 13&9 ein Lichtsystem zu schaffen, das gleichzeitig als Licht-,
Design- und Akustikelement eingesetzt werden kann. Mit dem hexagonalen Beleuchtungssystem
HEX-O entstand in Zusammenarbeit mit der F&E Abteilung bei XAL ein Produkt, das neueste LEDBeleuchtungstechnologie mit hocheffizienten Schallabsorbern vereint. Modulare, hexagonale Lichtund Akustikelemente bieten unterschiedlichste Kombinationsmöglichkeiten und Pattern-Bildungen,
welche dem Planer bzw. Architekten einen sehr großen Gestaltungsspielraum im funktionalen aber
auch ästhetischen Sinn ermöglichen. Ein Beleuchtungskonzept, geboren aus der Notwendigkeit
und geschaffen für die Moderne!
E FASCINATION SPACE, LIGHTS, ACOUSTICS
The interdisciplinary design studio 13&9 from Graz – a joint project of INNOCAD architects and
the designer ANASTASIA SU – is keen on addressing the modern needs and challenges related
to the interior design of ‘acoustically hard’ rooms. Modern, aesthetically pleasing architecture
which uses glass, concrete and other hard surfaces, is constantly confronted with the problem of
ensuring optimum indoor acoustics and with extremely high reverberation times. This was the base
scenario and inspiration for 13&9 to create a lighting system, which can be used simultaneously
as a lighting, design and acoustic element. Working together with the R&D department at XAL, the
hexagonal lighting system HEX-O was created as a product that unifies the latest developments in
LED lighting technology with highly efficient sound absorbers. The modular, hexagonal lighting and
acoustic elements can be combined in a wide range of ways and patterns, allowing planners and
architects great creative freedom in terms of functionality and aesthetics. A lighting concept – born
of necessity, designed for modern needs!

Vergleicht man die Absorptionsfläche des HEX-O-Aufbaus (dunkelblaue Kurve) mit einem Konkurrenzprodukt, ist das Ergebnis klar: Besonders im Frequenzbereich ab 1000 Hz hat die HEX-O wesentlich bessere schallabsorbierende Eigenschaften als das angeführte Konkurrenzprodukt.

Die hexagonale Form der Leuchte macht sie zu einem einmaligen, raumbildenden Element. Mit einem Touch Extravaganz schaffen einzelne oder miteinander kombinierte HEX-O Elemente ausgefallene Deckenbilder. Wahlweise als
Aufbauvariante oder als Pendelleuchte mit Seilabhängern an der Decke befestigt,
können HEX-O CEILING und SUSPENDED zusätzlich die Zonierung in größeren
Räumen unterstützen. HEX-O ist somit Leuchte und Deckengestaltung zugleich.

The hexagonal shape of this luminaire makes it a unique, space-defining element.
By adding a touch of extravagance, individual or combined HEX-O elements can
create eye-catching ceiling arrays. Available either as a surface mounted version or
as a suspended luminaire attached to the ceiling with cables HEX-O CEILING and
SUSPENDED can also create zoning effects in larger spaces. In this way, HEX-O
functions as both a luminaire and a ceiling design element.

Neben den Leuchtensystemen wird die HEX-O Serie auch durch die schallabsorbierenden Designelemente HEX-O ACOUSTIC MODULE, HEX-O ACOUSTIC
PLATE und den ABSORBER ergänzt. Diese eignen sich bestens für Bereiche
mit hohem Lärmpegel – wie etwa Hotellobbys, Einkaufszentren, Großraumbüros oder Besprechungsräume. Durch die Kombination eines Absorbers mit
speziellem Vlies und dem Strick werden hervorragende schallabsorbierende
Ergebnisse erzielt. Diese Elemente stehen in unterschiedlichen Größen und
Farben zur Verfügung.
PATENTED TECHNOLOGY FOR NOISE REDUCTION
In addition to the luminaire systems, the HEX-O series is also supplemented by
the sound-absorbing design elements HEX-O ACOUSTIC MODULE, HEX-O
ACOUSTIC PLATE and the ABSORBER. These elements are well suited for
areas with high noise levels, such as hotel lobbies, shopping centres, open
plan offices or conference rooms. The combination of an absorber with special
non-woven and woven fabrics produces outstanding sound-absorbing results.
These elements are available in different sizes and colours.

Leuchte mit einer hochreflektierenden Oberfläche lässt brillante Spitzenwerte von
bis zu 122 lm/W erreichen. Die Abdeckung der HEX-O ist wahlweise in opaler
oder mikroprismatischer Ausführung erhältlich. Die integrierten Entblendungsprismen der mikroprismatischen Abdeckung garantieren außerdem beste Entblendungswerte bei UGR < 19 für moderne Bürobeleuchtung nach DIN EN 12464-1.
BEST ILLUMINATION
The innovative technology inside the HEX-O delivers on this promise. The
backing plate with its high reflective surface allows brilliant peak values of up
to 122 lm/W. The cover of the HEX-O is available as either an opal surface or a
microprismatic structure. The integrated glare-suppressing prisms of the microprismatic cover also guarantee the best glare suppression values of UGR < 19
for modern office lighting in accordance with DIN EN 12464-1.
E UNBEATABLE
A comparison of the absorption surface on the HEX-O (dark blue curve) with a competing product leaves no doubt: Particularly in the frequency range above
1000 Hz, the HEX-O has significantly better sound-absorbing properties.

D In Anlehnung an DIN ISO 354 wurden die Absorptionseigenschaften von HEX-O auf den Prüfstand gestellt. Die
Ergebnisse haben wir jetzt schwarz auf weiß: mit Auszeichnung bestanden. Sogar unter erschwerten Bedingungen,
denn in dem 62 m3 großen Musterbüro kommen vor allem
Glas und harte Oberflächen, die eine geringe schallabsorbierende Wirkung besitzen, zum Einsatz. Mit einem Prüfsignal
von 50-6000 Hz wurde die Nachhallzeit des Schalls im Büro
gemessen. Diese liegt ohne Schallabsorber deutlich außerhalb
des Toleranzbereichs für Sprache. Die Messung mit HEX-O
Schallschutzschirm bestätigt: Besonders in dem für Sprache
wichtigen Frequenzbereich von 500-1500 Hz erzielt er eine enorme Schallpegelminderung. Dank HEX-O liegt die Nachhallzeit somit im nach DIN 18041 optimalen Bereich für Sprache.
E The sound-absorbing properties of the HEX-O have
been tested in accordance with DIN ISO 354. The results
are in: it passed with flying colours, even under the difficult
conditions of a 62 m³ sample office with predominantly
glass and hard surfaces, all with very little sound absorbing effect. Using a test signal of 50-6000 Hz, the reverberation time of the sound in the office was measured.
Without a sound absorber, this time period is significantly
above the tolerance level for speech. Measurement with
HEX-O sound protection confirms an enormous reduction
in sound level, particularly in the frequency range of
500-1500 Hz critical for speech. Thanks to HEX-O, the
reverberation time is therefore within the optimal range for
speech according to DIN 18041.

E HIGH EFFICIENT NOISE REDUCING
Communication has changed. The noisy backgrounds particularly in modern,
functional buildings such as government agencies, universities, large offices
and hotel reception areas can often be uncomfortably loud, because of the
predominance of materials with hard, sound-reflecting surfaces, such as
glass or concrete. They offer but little sound absorption and sound waves
overlap, particularly in the case of human, which lies in the frequency range
between 500 and 1500 hertz (Hz). It is precisely in this area, at frequencies
around 1500 Hz, that the HEX-O sound absorber achieves its best results
(see diagram). Through its patented honeycomb design and woven outer
sleeve, which is reinforced by a fleece, sound waves are trapped inside.
Thus, the respective reverberation time in the upper frequency range around
1500 Hz is audibly reduced. As conversation takes place immediately below
the HEX-O absorber, unlike with conventional acoustic ceilings, a high level
of speech intelligibility is guaranteed. HEX-O combines this sound absorbing
effect with advanced LED technology.

Kommunikation hat sich verändert. Besonders Geräuschkulissen in modernen,
funktionalen Bauwerken wie Behörden, Universitäten, Großraumbüros und
Empfangsbereichen von Hotels können oft unangenehm laut werden, denn es
kommen vor allem Materialien mit harten, schallreflektierenden Oberflächen
wie Glas oder Sichtbeton zum Einsatz. Diese weisen jedoch kaum schallabsorbierende Wirkung auf. Dadurch entstehen ungünstige Hörbedingungen und
die Sprachverständlichkeit im Frequenzbereich zwischen 500 und 1500 Hertz
(Hz) wird deutlich gemindert. Die HEX-O Schallabsorber erzielen genau hier,
bei Frequenzen um 1500 Hz, beste Ergebnisse (siehe Diagramm). Durch sein
patentiertes Wabendesign und die gestrickte Außenhülle, verstärkt durch ein
Vlies, werden Schallwellen im Inneren gefangen. Somit kommt es zu einer relevanten Verkürzung der Nachhallzeit im oberen Frequenzbereich bei 1500 Hz.
Da Gespräche unmittelbar unterhalb des HEX-O Absorbers stattfinden, anders
als bei herkömmlichen Akustikdecken, ist eine hohe Sprachverständlichkeit
garantiert. Diese schallabsorbierende Wirkung vereint HEX-O mit fortschrittlichster LED-Technologie.

D Viele Empfangshallen in öffentlichen Gebäuden, beispielsweise einer Bank
oder Versicherung, stehen vor der Herausforderung, auf der einen Seite durch

andererseits doch eine gewisse Privatsphäre zu garantieren. Vor allem in punkto
Geräuschpegel und Diskretion in den Servicezonen. Zudem sollte die eingesetzte
Lichttechnik eine optimale Ausleuchtung aller Arbeits- und Besprechungsplätze
bewirken und die Architektur in ihrer Gesamtheit unterstützen. Genau hier spielt
HEX-O ihre Stärken aus. Durch ihr außergewöhnliches Design schafft sie architektonische Highlights. Mit den modular angeordneten Akustikelementen sorgt sie für
eine merkliche Geräuschdämmung in den Gesprächszonen. Ganz zu schweigen
vom homogen und blendfreien Licht, dass HEX-O dank modernster LED-Beleuchtungstechnologie abgibt.

E Reception areas in public buildings, for example at banks or insurance
companies, are often faced with the challenge of having to ensure smooth
dealings with customers thanks to their open-plan construction on the one
hand, and being able to provide a certain degree of privacy on the other. This
is particularly important in relation to noise levels and a discrete atmosphere
in service zones. Furthermore, the lighting systems used must provide
optimum lighting for all of the workplaces and meeting areas, and enhance
the overall impression of the architecture. This is precisely where HEX-O
shines. Thanks to its unusual design, it sets architectural highlights, and with
its modular acoustic elements, it also results in a tangible reduction of noise
in meeting areas. Not to mention its uniform, anti-glare light, which HEX-O
provides using state-of-the-art LED lighting technology.

LIGHT + BUILDING
D Der Messestand von XAL war eines der Highlights auf der diesjährigen
LIGHT+BUILDING in Frankfurt. Durch seinen offen gestalteten Innenraum
bot er jede Menge Platz für Begegnungszonen. HEX-O wurde genau hier
eingesetzt und verringerte die Nachhallzeit des Schalles spürbar. Ein Garant für
erfolgreiche Kundengespräche. Vor allem an der Bar und den Besprechungspulten überzeugte HEX-O mit den montierten Akustikabsorbern durch eine
extrem gedämpfte Geräuschkulisse. Neben diesem Akustikeffekt begeisterte
HEX-O durch ihr ungewöhnliches hexagonales Design und LED-Beleuchtungstechnik der neuesten Generation. Dies unterstrich die extravagante Messestandarchitektur und sorgte zudem für eine optimale Ausleuchtung.

E XAL’s trade fair booth was one of the highlights at this year’s
LIGHT+BUILDING in Frankfurt. Thanks to its open interior area, it offered
plenty of room for meetings with people. HEX-O was used here and resulted
in a tangible reduction of the reverberation time, helping to guarantee
successful meetings with customers. At the bar and meeting counters in
particular, HEX-O was a great solution thanks to the integrated acoustic
absorbers and ensured an extremely dampened level of background noise.
Along with this acoustic effect, HEX-O made a fantastic impression with its
unusual hexagonal design and cutting-edge LED technology. This highlighted
the extravagant architecture of the stand and guaranteed excellent lighting, all
at the same time.
