Van Cleef & Arpels’ new High Jewellery collection pays tribute to Legendary Balls
In tutte le lingue, la parola Ballo evoca un’occasione di fasto e armonia. Un ballo rimanda innanzitutto a un luogo di prestigio, a un ambiente raffinato. Ma significa anche arte dell’eleganza degli
abiti e delle maschere. È una serata nata dal desiderio di ricevere ospiti importanti. Il ballo diventa
così il teatro dove esibire i gioielli più preziosi e le pietre più rare.
Van Cleef & Arpels ha scelto di rinnovare questa tradizione, così francese e così parigina, del ballo.
La nuova collezione di Alta Gioielleria Bals de Légende presenta cinque gruppi di gioielli ispirati
a cinque balli indimenticabili del XX secolo. Ognuna di queste parure racconta una serata eccezionale la cui guida è una scintillante ballerina. Noi abbiamo scelto per voi due dei cinque balli con
i loro relativi gioielli.

In every language the word Ball conjures a moment of splendour and harmony. A ball is first of all a prestigious location, a refined setting.
It is also the art of elegance, reflected in the attire and costumes of the guests. It is a party, born of one man or woman’s desire to be the
host to the most prestigious guests. The ball then becomes a fabulous showcase for adornment, an occasion to reveal and celebrate
precious jewels and rare gems.
Van Cleef & Arpels has chosen to renew this very French and very Parisian tradition of the Ball. The new High Jewellery collection, Bals
de Légende, presents five sets of jewels, inspired by five extraordinary 20th century balls. Each tells the story of an unforgettable evening,
guided by a sparkling feminine dancer. We have chosen for you two of the five dances with their related jewelry.

Le bal du Palais d’Hiver

{ San Pietroburgo 11 Febbraio 1903 }
San Pietroburgo è coperta da una coltre di ghiaccio e neve e le slitte si fermano l’una dietro l’altra nel cortile d’onore del Palazzo d’Inverno. Dopo essersi liberati delle loro pellicce, gli invitati si dirigono verso lo Scalone
Giordano che introduce agli appartamenti di stato. Il contrasto tra il decoro
barocco, l’alternanza di marmi e dorature, e i costumi quasi medievali degli
invitati è sorprendente. Il tema della serata è stato scelto dalla zarina Alessandra: la corte di Russia nel XVII secolo. Le signore indossano sarafan di
velluto e di broccato d’oro, arricchiti da preziosi ricami e orlati di pelliccia.
Tutte hanno fatto smontare i propri gioielli per farne cucire le gemme sugli
abiti. E’ un corteo di icone bizantine, quello che avanza negli immensi saloni che si affacciano sul gelato fiume Neva. Un ballo eccezionale richiede
una cornice straordinaria e il Palazzo d’Inverno ne è una delle più favolose.
L’Anticamera Imperiale, la Sala di Nicola, la Sala dei Concerti: la sequenza
dei saloni possiede un’architettura d’interni tra le più fastose al mondo.
Saint-Petersburg is covered under a blanket of ice. The sleighs stop one after
the other in the royal cour¬tyard of the Winter Palace. After taking off their
furs, the guests are directed to the Jordan staircase which leads to the state
rooms. The contrast between the baroque decor of gilt and marble and the
almost medieval costumes of the guests is arresting. It is the Tsarina
Alexandra who has chosen the theme for the evening: the 17th century
Russian Court. The women wear velvet and gold brocade sarafans laden
with precious embroideries and trimmed with fur. All have had their
jewellery adapted so as to sew the pieces on their costumes. It is a procession
of Byzantine icons that makes its way through the huge state rooms that
overlook the frozen Neva River. An exceptional ball deserves an exceptional
setting and the Winter Palace is one of the most fabulous there is. The
Imperial Antichamber, the Nicolas Room, the Concert Room, the succession
of salons is one of the most grandiose in the world.

La spilla Diamond Dancer decor
Questa sontuosa ballerina richiama lo sfarzo della corte di Russia dell’inizio del XX secolo. Ogni diamante è montato con un preciso criterio al fine
di rievocare la fluidità delle stoffe. La tradizione della danza alla corte di
Russia risale al XVIII secolo. Nel 1738, la zarina Anna Ivanovna chiede a
un maestro del balletto francese, Joseph Landé, di creare a San Pietroburgo
la prima compagnia di danza imperiale. Questo gioiello simboleggia l’alleanza artistica tra la Russia e la Francia associando il tutu della ballerina,
un classico della danza francese, al kokoshnik ispirato al copricapo tradizionale russo.
The Diamond Dancer decor clip
This ballerina is sumptuous, a reflection of the Russian court at the beginning
of the 20th century. Each diamond, is set in its own precise place on the
mounting so as to recreate the suppleness of the fabrics. The tradition of dance
at the Court of Russia dates back to the 18th century. In 1738, the Tsarina
Anna Ivanovna asked the French ballet master, Joseph Landé, to create the
first ever imperial dance company. This jewel is the symbol of the artistic
alliance between Russia and France by associating the dancer’s tutu, a classic
of French ballet, with the kokochnik, inspired by the Russian traditional
headdress.

L’anello Providence
Il primo dei cinque anelli eccezionali creati da Van Cleef & Arpels per Bals de Légende s’ispira alla Russia imperiale. Tra la sua collezione di gioielli antichi, Van Cleef & Arpels annovera un diadema di diamanti con incastonati cinque smeraldi cabochon appartenuto alla granduchessa Elisabetta Feodorovna,
sorella della zarina Alessandra. È dunque uno smeraldo cabochon “pan di zucchero” da 20,12 carati
a ornare l’anello Providence. La pietra è originaria della Colombia. Scoperti nel XVI secolo dai conquistatori spagnoli, gli smeraldi colombiani sono considerati i più belli al mondo. Questo anello è presentato in uno scrigno d’eccezione, decorato con motivi floreali che rievocano i ricami di alcuni costumi
del Ballo al Palazzo d’Inverno del 1903.
The Providence ring
It is the first of the five excep¬tional rings created especially by Van Cleef & Arpels for this collec¬tion.
It is inspired directly by imperial Russia. In its private collection of vintage jewellery, Maison Van
Cleef & Arpels owns a diamond tiara set with five cabochon emeralds which once belonged to the
Grand Duchess Elisabeth Feodorovna, sister of Tsarina Alexandra. Thus, it is a “sugar-loaf ” cabochon
emerald of 20.12 carats that has been chosen to adorn this ring. The stone originates from Colombia.
Discovered in the 16th century by the Spanish conquistadores, Colombian emeralds are said to be the
most beautiful in the world. This ring is presented in its own exceptional box. The box is decorated
with floral designs inspi¬red by the embroidery of some of the costumes at the 1903 Winter Palace ball.
Il sautoir Zima
L’architettura di San Pietroburgo è stata la fonte d’ispirazione per questo sautoir composto da circa 1.500 sfere di lapislazzuli, il cui colore ricorda il blu
delle facciate barocche di alcuni palazzi della città imperiale. I gemmologi
della Maison hanno impiegato mesi per raccogliere sfere di lapislazzuli di colore omogeneo tra loro. Il motivo in diamanti richiama gli elementi architettonici di San Pietroburgo; è amovibile e diventa una spilla. Quando viene
indossato come tale, viene sostituito sul sautoir da un altro motivo in diamanti a “fiocco di neve”, a rievocare quella che scende sulla città nelle notti
d’inverno. Ed è proprio l’inverno di San Pietroburgo a dare il nome al sautoir: Zima.
The Zima long necklace
It is the architecture and the colours of the city of Saint-Petersburg in
winter that have inspired this long necklace or sautoir. It is made up of
about 1500 beads of lapis lazuli, reminiscent of the blue facades of some
of the imperial city’s baroque palaces. It took months for our gemologists
to put together such a collection of lapis lazuli beads, all in chromatic
harmony. The diamond motif evokes the architecture of Saint-Petersburg.
It is detachable and can be worn as a clip. In this case, it is replaced by a
snowflake motif, imitating the snow that falls on the city on winter nights.
It is this Saint-Petersburg winter which has given its name to the necklace:
Zima.

Quella sera, nella sala da ballo dell’Hotel Plaza di New York, tutto è in
bianco e nero. Sono presenti l’alta società americana e buona parte del
jet set europeo. Lo scrittore Truman Capote dà un ballo in onore dei suoi
successi letterari e sceglie di festeggiare la propria gloria invitando, il 28
aprile 1966, “le 500 persone più celebri del mondo”. Marlène Dietrich,
Greta Garbo, Vivien Leigh, Mia Farrow e Frank Sinatra rappresentano
Hollywood, ci sono poi miliardari come gli Agnelli, i Rockefeller e i
Niarchos, oltre che reali come il Duca e la Duchessa di Windsor, il
Maharaja e la Maharani di Jaipur. Figurano tra gli invitati anche esponenti
del mondo politico, come diversi membri della famiglia Kennedy. E
naturalmente tutti hanno accettato di attenersi al dress code nonché tema
della serata: Black & White.
Everything is black and white this evening in the ballroom of New York’s
Plaza Hotel. All walks of American high society are represented and quite
a few of Europe’s jet-setters. The writer, Truman Capote, is giving a ball to
mark his literary success. He has decided to celebrate his moment of glory
by inviting, on the 28th of April 1966, “the 500 most famous people in the
world”. Marlene Dietrich, Greta Garbo, Vivien Leigh, Mia Farrow and
Frank Sinatra add Hollywood glamour. There are billionaires, the Agnellis,
the Rockefellers and the Niar¬chos and former heads of state such as the
Duke of Windsor and his wife and the Maharajah and Maharani of Jaipur.
The political elite are also here for the evening, notably several members of
the Kennedy clan. They have all adapted their attire to the dress code and
theme of the party: “Black & White”.

La parure Heavenscraper
L’architettura newyorchese, i suoi grattacieli, e soprattutto l’Empire State
Building, sono le fonti d’ispirazione di
questa parure composta da una collana, da un paio di orecchini e da un
bracciale. L’uso delle perle, infilate e
non incastonate, consente una grande
flessibilità.
The “Heavenscraper”set
New York’s architecture and its skyscrapers, particularly the Empi¬re State
Building, are the sources of inspiration for this set made up of a long necklace,
a pair of earrings and a bracelet. The use of pearls, strung one by one and not
set, gives the jewels great suppleness.
L’anello Abstraction
Ispirato all’arte astratta, è incastonato di spinelli neri taglio baguette e soprattutto di un diamante da 15,54 carati di colore D, il migliore, di purezza
IF (Internally Flawless) e di tipo 2A. Ci sono voluti diversi anni perché i
gemmologi di Van Cleef & Arpels individuassero questa pietra il cui taglio
ovale è antico.
The Abstraction ring
It is inspired by abstract art. It is set with
baguette-cut black spinel stones and of a 15.54
carat diamond D colour, the most beautiful there
is, has an IF clarity (Internally Flawless) and is
type 2A. It took the gemologists at Van Cleef &
Arpels several years to find this stone which has a
vintage oval cut.
La spilla Diamond and Onyx Dancer decor
Su questa spilla la silhouette della ballerina è lunga e sinuosa, simile a quella delle star leggendarie
degli Anni ‘30. In stile Art Déco, questa spilla di diamanti bianchi e onice rispetta alla lettera il dress
code e il tema del Ballo Black & White offerto da Truman Capote nel 1966. Come su tutte le altre spille
della collezione Bals de légende, il volto della ballerina è un diamante taglio rosa, fedele alla tecnica
tradizionalmente adottata da Van Cleef & Arpels.
The Diamond and Onyx Dancer decor clip
For this clip, the outline of the ballerina is slender and stream-lined, very similar to that of the legendary
stars of the 1930s. In an Art Deco style, the white diamond and onyx brooch is perfectly in keeping with
the dress code and theme of the Black & White ball given by Truman Capote in 1966. Just like for all of
the clips in the Bals de légende collection, the ballerina’s face is represen¬ted by a rose-cut diamond,
following the technique used by Van Cleef & Arpels for several years now.
