Our story begins- in, Northern Italy in. the year 1900, when, in the little village of Maniago up in the Friuli region, Giuseppina Dehllistro married Dimitrio Z.1netti (a mosaic worker). The couple cmigrated to England, 'making their way on foot across Italy and France. It is not clear how -long the jourlley took them, but suffice it to say that,- the year 1904 found them established in 'I1 Quartiere Italiano', ClC"rkenwcll and it was here in No 8 Monnt Pleasant that Famiglia Zanetti spcnt the rest of their YC.1rs. Elisa their first child arrived in the first year followed two years latcr by another daughter TiIli, Vittorio in 1908 and Antonio (Tony) 1906. When Elisa was only cightcen she met and marricd a yonng fnrniture maker Gioacehino Men07,zi \vho hailed from Bardi (Parma). Gioacchino ,vas a tall handsome, like.1ble yonng man, well thonght of by all who knew him. They married in St Pcter's Italian Church in the ye.1r 1921 (see photograph), Lisa made her own wedding dress; ,IS yon e.1n see she was alre.1dy showing her skills with the needlc, a tr,ldcthat stood her in good stcad in the 'ye.1rs to follow. They livcd in the housc with Lisa's parcnts, a happy arrangement, which was the normal way, in the life of the immigrants in that era. The loss of her ll1ther· Dimitrio was a bitter blow when he dicd in 1922 within a ye.1r of thcir marriagc. Her mother was Icn to bring up three youngsters. Tony was only 12 ye.1rs old at the time and TiIli and Victor were in their teens. The two, boys were outstanding athletes and represented the borough of Holborn in the London Schoolboys Athlctic Championships. Usa Olive Besagni gave birth to her first son Renato (ROImie) in '1924. For three years life was good for the family, Gioacchino, was working , Lisa was dressmaking. The family had plenty of friends, 'Usa was a very ,livcly young woman, quick to 1e.1rn, always ready to listen to her neighbol!rs' problems and help them, if possible. Fate ,dealt the family a 'terrible blow; in 1927, at the tender age of 17, Tony, her handsome, athletic young brother was showiiig signs of a mysterious debililating illness. The final diagnosis was shocking, "'Par-, kinson's Disease" a progressive. in-, curable illness,' exceedingly rare' in the young. LiS<1, with Gioacchino, was her mother's rock at this bad time for them all. At first it wasn't too bad, Tony could get around and with the help of the rest of the family they coped: Life went on, Victor ended up in the United States where he stayed" for five' years. TiIli married and lived ne.1rby. Lisa's second son Giuseppe (Pippi) was born in 1931. Victor returned from his travels - in 1933. LiS<1 and Gioacchino had finally moved into' their own place, just across the road from her mother, illtO -the rooms above the Comitti Bllsiness premises. By 1937 young Victor was lio'rn and the Famiglia Menozzi was complete. The thirties Giacchino and Elisa Menozzi on their wedding day in /92/ '. 8 March 94 :t:~I.LA were a relatively happy time for most of our' Paes.1ni, although there was a period of general unemployment for many, in the main, men the like of Gioaechino who had a good trade were working. He was also at this time working as a part time steward in 'the Mazzini Garibaldi" working men's clnb in Rcd Lion Street. Lis.'1 supplemellled their in· come with her dressmaking. She made the wedding drcsses or many of her neighbours and friends. Rannie and Pippi were allending St Peter's Italian School. The rooms in No 49 wcre always buzzing with activities of, one kind or another; her sons ,,'Crc growing up and their friends wcre always welcome. The neighbours ,children all loved "Auntie".. as she was known to' ihem. If any or the chil-, dren tore their clothes, (hey wonld go to Lis.'1, and she wonld mend them, so that their mothers remained unaware, thus saving them rrom the kind of chastisement that the Mammas dished out in those days. It was there in 190 I when, 1 suppose one could say, my relationship with the Italian Hospital began for that was the year and ihe place my nonno, Domenieo Servini, spent his first Christmas in this country. Since that time I have had strong connections with the Italian HospiiaJ., Not only have family members needed its facilities but we were also involved in various Hospital activities. i always found it a community rather (hml: a building. A family rather than a hospital. Those of you reading this article that were involved with the Hospital Anna Giacon yourSelves ,viiI know what'I mean. It served its role with care and attention. It fulfill<:d its need \vith thoroughness ' ,and dedication. As much as I cling to the days of old, to the values of yesterday I also ,belie~e every . fruit has its season and the Hospital's sc.~son eame to an end. With'the pass.~ge of time the Italian iJiunigmnt had integrated to the exteni that'the Hospi131 no longer served its 'original need. That need no longer e:dsted. I am also aware of the huge aillounts of money it takes to filn a hospital in these 'expensive times and I understood the financial predicament the Hospital was in; I was not, in all ' . fairness, surprised when the Italian Hospital closed. However, I must add that although I was fortunate enough to be aware of the situation I do not believe the Italian commuuity as a whole were well informed. The Italian Community, for whom the Hospital had been built and into' which 'they had' poured' rimch of their mouey 'and labour deserved a more thorough explanation. Be thai as it may' ihe fact still remained that the Italian Hospital was no longer a viable proposition. The decision to sell the property was taken and I believe there were limitations as to whom it could be sold. Eventually it was sold to The Hospital of Sick Children, Grc.~t Ornlond Street. When I heard 'the news I was plc.~sed for I was aware of Grc.~t Or-mond Street Hospital's' reputation as onc of the world's leading children's hospitals. Since the s.~le I have been privileged to be more closely connected with Grc.~t Ormond Street Hos,pital and cannot speak highly enough of all ihat they do. Not 'only is the patient care second to none but so is the support and help for the patient's families. Great Ormond. Street Hospital ,(GOSH) has ree<;ntly ,oPened a new building as a result of"an enormous fund raising campaign: the "Wishing Well Appc.~I". All funds were raised by private and ~mmercial donations. Ai the same time GOSH est.~blished a separate charity for their ·It.~lian Hospital wing". The old Italian Hospital building in Queen Square has been completely refurbished and, I was recently invited by Michelle Davis, the Family Welfare Manager at GOSH, to visit the Italian Hospital after the restoratiOlI work. March 94 -btvMJ/l-, ..&> , RIVISTA DELI.A COMUNITA' ITAUANA Veritatis Splendor In my last two articles on this encyclic.1l, I have discusscd the grc.1t love of God for us, how important we arc to God, the role of the Church in our lives and our way. to salvation. I hope that all of what I have discnssed so fadlas been c1c.1r to all of you. If there is a, point that you arc not sure of plcase SPc.1k to your 'Parish Priest, or,. you may contact .rrje directl{ by gOlllg to St. Peter's 111 London and asking for my address in Rome., Chapter 2 of the encyclic.11 begins with the words: "Do not be conformed to this world". I have previously explained that a follower of Christ does not live "according to the flesh", but rather' by the gospel and the hope that Jesus has given. Christ has eSl.1blishedthe Church here on earth to act as a physic.11 guide for us. I! is important that we follow the teachings of the Church and observe all of her precepts. Tlie Church has the responsibility that \vas given' to her directly by Christ to discern \vhat is right and wrong. From the earliest times, the Church has been fnllillilig this responsibility. An example of this is found in scripture. St. Paul in .his leUer to Titus (chapter I" verse 10) tells the contemporaries of his time:' "And, in fact, you have there a great many people who need 'to be disciplined, who talk nonsense and tly to make others believe it... inen of this kind ruin whole families, by tc.1ching things that they ought not to"• ' St. Paul calls those who go against the doctrines of the faith '''people who are no longer interested in the Truth". From this discourse' of St. Paul, it would appc.1r 'that ,those who have opposed what the Church tc.1ches have always been around - even from the very beginning, of the Church's history. Dissenters are therefore, not to be considered a recent phenomenon. In this encyclical, our Holy Father is trying to tell us that those who try to sway us away from what is the Tmth c.1n 1c.1d us to our very owil spiritual ruin. It was St. John who spoke those thmous words that arc found in chapter 8 verse 32 of his gospel: "You will know the Tmth, and the Tnith will make you frcc", Here the Pope will make a link between the Tmth and our .Freedom. Indeed, in order to exercise our free will, to make judgements of what is right and wrong, we must be free. For example, if sOllleone Marzo94 Mithele Scotto SAC is holding a gun to my he.1d and tells me to steal something valuable, am I commilling a sin? The answer is obviously no since it was not my intention to steal and, I was forced iuto doing it. God \vill not hold me accountable for that offence. If wc remember our catechism, the three things necessary for,a mortal sin are: grave maller, full consent of the will, and sufficient relIection. If one of these conditions is not met, no sin has occurred. Grave maller me.1ns that 'the action that is in question is 'against the moral law. It would be something that'has'bccn defined' by the'Church as a sin. Sccond, full consent of the will nie.1ns that I am 'totally in control of mysclf and my situation. I andree We decide what is good and evil? .to choose whether or not I will commit .lhe particular act. Sufficient ,relIection for lIIe means tying the other two together and realizing that if I should commit this act, I will be severing my rclationship with God and will, in effect, be' selling mysclf up as my own god. Of course if I don't know that something'is a sin, I also cannot be hcld accountable be·' fore God for it. If you relIect for a moment on the concept that I have just given you, the ide.1 of the absolute necessity of your free will (frcedom to choose) becomes very appareut. Our Holy Father, in his relIeclion on our freedom will go on to say tlmt the power to decide what is good and what is evil does not belong to man, but to God Himself. God has defined for us what is good :md what is bad. Man is certainly free, inasmuch as he can understand and uecept God's commands. Man pos· sesses an extremely fhr re.1ehing frcedom - but his Freedom is not unlim· ited. We ure all called to aCcept the moral law that has been given to us by God. In fact, Humim freedom finds its authentic and complete fulfilment prccisely in the aeceptance of that law. God, who alone is good, knows perfectly what is gOO\l for Man, and by virtue of His very love proposes this good to man. God's law does not reduce, 'much less do away;, with Human freedom; rather" it protects and promotes that Freedom. We. must, however, be careful that we.ao,not become convinced that what we decide is good and evil is the criteria that wc use for our lives. All of our f.1culties - reason and intelligence included - depend upon God who is the Crc.1tor of all things. There is only onc set of Truths. It is not that ·c.1ch man must decide what is true for him and another decide what his truths will be. In thinking about this, the words of Christ become very clear; "I am the Way, the Truth and the Life". This is also a very explicit statement that must be taken very literally. Therefore, if Christ· is the Truth, our obligation is to' try to understand Him as best we can. In writing this relIection on the second ehaptcr of the encyclical, I thought of the story of the exodus of the Jews from Egypt: Moses was their spokesman before God. When they were in the desert, Moses left them for 40 days to receive the law that God had wanted to give them • the Ten Commandments. When the Israelites 'were left on their own, what happened? They fell into a state of anarchy and f.1shioned a golden calf an idol. They lost their direction and sense of decency. They became slaver - yes slaves - to their lawlessness. When Moses returned and found them in their miserable state, he was ques· tioned by onc of the Jews who ,challenged his authority. He told Moses that the group had become selfsufficient without him and had, no need of God's law. To this, Moses responded: "There is no Freedom without the Law". Seeing how the Jews'lmd strayed serves as a reminder to us that wc arc not self·sufficient but depend totally npon God. Next month' I will wrile my last article on this encyclical. I hope that I have shed some light on the concepts that the Pope has set forth. Until, next time, I wish yon well and hope that God blesses you ull abundantly. 27 :if;~ELLA For a Rainy Day Private and Further Education Continued from last month B: Funding from Capital In most cases, parents will be unable to pay the fees from their own, existing resources in the form' of a sufficient lump sum. As a more likely alternative, the following options arc available:Bl) School Fees Composition Schemes: are operated by the school tp which parents propose to send their children. The schemes consist of annuities which allow a lump sum to be paid, in advance, which is less than that total fees to be funded. The size of the' discount whieh the schoof' is able to offer will depend on the length of the period before the fees become due imd the level of ,interest rates at the time the lump sum is paid. In' order to operate the scheme, the 'school to whom the lump sum is paid obtains the status' of an educational charity. This makes the scheme particularly attractive to higher rate taxpayers, as they would not be liable to either Income Tax or C1pital Gains Tax arising from the investment' of the lump sum by the school. B2) Educational ,Trusts: previously outlined in (A4) and, effectively, anindependent version of (BI) with the exception that it is the trust rather than the school which, will purchase the annuity from, the insurance company. The annuity payments will be made payable to the school and sent via the trustees to meet the school fces for the child concerned. B3) Fixed Interest Schemes: use fixed interest investments such as gilt-edged securities, corporation stocks and national savings certificates to fund the school fees. generally less volatile than equity-based investment schemes, 28 COMUNITA'ITALIANA Richard Si/via given that the purpose is to ensure (as fhr as possible) that the investments maturing before the fees fall due for payment are sufficient. It is preferable, as a prudent measure, to choose underlying investments which have conservative, but steady, growth potential. This reduces the possibility (compared to equity-based investments) of the investment having a very low value at the time when the school fees become due: B4) Temporary Annuities as a source of funding: c.1pital c.1n be applied for school fee purposes' to purchase a" temporary annuity to, provide the required amounts to pay the regular premiums for the various options oullined in (A2) to (A4). B5) Investment Bonds as a source of funding: the withdrawal facility of the bond eml be used as in (B4) above. You arc allowed to withdraw up to 5% of your c.1pital C<1ch YC<1r without any liability to Income Tax. Alternatively, you could simply'allow your capil,,1 to grow in order pay the school fees sometime in the future. c: Funding from Other Sources Apart from meeting the cost of school fces from their own C<1pital or personal income, the following alternatives arc available to parents:Cl) Lump Sum gifts from grandparents/relatives: requires ihe formation of either an Accumulation and Maintenance Trust or a Discretionary Trust in order to enable the trustees to make the necessary payments from the trnst at the relevant times to pay the school fees. C2) Secured Loans: either in the 'form of a "top-up" to an existing mortgage, a remortgage or a bank overdraft secured on your property. C3) Unsecured Loans: usually in the fOrnl of a personal loan or a bank overdraft. C4) Moving House: this requires the parents to "trade down". I.e. move to a house with a lower value and utilise any c.1pital released, from the sale of the original property, for the payment of school fees. For many parents, considerable sacrifices, will have to be made in,order, to, send ,their children, to a private school. These sacrifices can~ hO\Vevcr" often be mitigated' by ritaking the best use of available financial resources. Given that the vast majority of parents will not have, the ability to pay the school fees from their own personal nieans as and when they fall due, it is importa'nl to' effect an, investment plan for this purpose. The best results will. generally be achieved by taking action emly - ideally, as soon as possible after the child is born. Any sehelile, irrespective of the course of action that is required to implement it, ,viii need to have a considerable amount' of in-built flexibility in order to overcome the inevitable uncertainties that ,vill arise. If, however, 'we look a 'little closer, we see this problem of injustice in our own lives. ' A very common queStion I think we all ask ourselves is: why do the good suffer and the evil ones prosj>cr? This is, a question that has been asked from the beginning of time. Wc live in an'imperfeet world' and there ,is seemingly no 'end to suffering. He knows us 'better than we know ourselves. He ,truly'understands wlmt wc are going through in our lives and will help us because He is rich in mercy and in love. Therefore,' my two point are: 1) God will punish those who persecute others 2) God will save all who cry to Him ' for help. There are those who carry their malice and their uneharitableness to such a point that they become guilty of calumny and rob thcir neighbour of their honour and even their possessions. Acting in such a way is a violation of the Law of Love which God has given to us. In c<~eh man, God has instilled a conscience and a way of living in an upright manner. To go against this is to sin not only against our ncighbour but also against God Himself. Christ Himsclf stated in the that: "He who receives you, receives Me. And, he who despises Me, despises Him who sent me". In another pass.~ge it is written: "Whatsoever you do" to the least of my people, that you do unto Me". These arc very clear statemcnts and have no need of elarific.~tion. God never fails to punish those, sooncr or later, who ill tre.~t their neighbour or deal in an unjust manner. Even on the Earth, there is some evidenCe of this. How often does it happen ,that a man prepares a pitfall for another and falls into it himsel17 How often has a man in the process of slandering another loose his own rc"utation? 32 Michele Scotto SAC Having said' all this, wc must also look at ourselves and make sure that we are not the one being "high and mighty". We must have a clean conscience and be filled with the love of God. 'We must forgive the wrongs that others do to us. If they continue, we should not retaliate, but rather pray for them. , Of all the creatures on the Earth, men are the highest. God loveS all men so much so that He allows us to always exercise our free will. There is a very beautiful song that I hear sung every once in a while during Mass' that states: "The Lord hears the 'ct}' of the poor, blessed by the Lord". According to Scripture, ,those who are sorrowful and unjustly persecuted arc numbered among the friends of God. Therefore no matter how severe the persecution, if he only trusts, in God and relies upon Him. He is one of God's friends and is under His special protection. The innocent man may have many to understand ourselves better and we grow strongcr. We become more compassionate and we can identify more with Christ who was the "suffering scrvant". If we go through life without having any, problems, we are not really livin$. When we look at suffering in this light, perhaps we can call sufferin$in some scnse, a gift form God. This is a strange way to look at this problem if wc are only "mcn and womcn of the world". With Christ, suffering has taken on a whole new dimension and a whole new value. It can be a tremendous source of grace as wcll. We must always remember' that this world is not the one that we arc living for., It is the world to come that really counts. When we look at the lives of the Saints, we See how much suffering they truly' did. Since we are all called to be saints in Heaven" perhaps it is truly a gift that God is giving us for our own sanctification. Or, it can also be considered a tool for God to use to teach us with. Eilhcr way, it is a very positive and rc<~listic approach to all of our difficulties. One day our sUfferings will end and God will show us why we suffered. I think we will then all realize that it truly made' sense for us to suffer at that point in our lives. Remember too, that each one of us will be judged for what we have done on the Earth. Nothing will remain hidden from God. His justice will be the measure by which things \vill be decided. Let us all take With suffiring we grow comfort in this and at the same time, enemies, he may be poor and remember that we must be careful despised, but God will take care of with what we do in our lives. I hope that this reflection that I him an,d will onc day turn his sufferings into joy! What could be have given touches you in some way. Perhaps it will spark in us a more consoling than this tllought? Why, you may ask, does it scem dceper awareness of the difficulties that not all who are suffering unjust of those around us. Perhaps it will persceution receive this special help even hclp us to make sensc of a from God? To this I can offcr two difficult period in our lives. In any solutions. First, the individual is not case, my last Gospel quot.~tion really trusting in God. The pcrson (t.~en from St. Matthew) would now may be too impaticnt to wait until be best used as a spiritual measuring the time comes when He will hclp stiek to make a determination of just and bring dcliverance. Also, if we how good we arc. "A good man draws good things seek to avenge the wrongs that are done to us, we Imve taken the mattcr from his store of goodness, a bad into our own hands. By ,trying to act man draws bad things from' his store like God, we offend Him. Not only of badness". To put it simply, if you are a may the persecution continue ,but it may actually gct worse. God will act good person, you will look for the in His good time. Second, perhaps goodness in others and try always to God wants us to suffer. There is a do good. If your are an evil person, great positive in the sUfferings that you will always look for the evil in we endure both on a spiritual Icvel others and will always try to do evil. I hope I, have made my point! as well as a" physical levcl. ' , But who is 'his heir? He once referred to Steven Spielberg as his "spiritual younger brother". But has he grown up enough to take his place? Unlike his Hollywood collc.1gues, I have always, had an enormous respect for Spielberg. Whatever film he has approached he lias absorbed himself entirely in the subject maller with no' holds barred.
