It is very necessary to have this Lord with all Our Heart, soul and mind wc mean it to closely affectionate and profound relationship with God; be, something so beautiful and simple that wc can hardly for this reason we make whatever sacrifices we can so that believe it. 4 June 94 :iJ;.* DFn.A COMUNITA'ITAlJANA Un voto importante Parlamento Europco. 5 FIAT MOTOR S ES PROMISES TO GIVE YOU GREAT DEALS ON FC~~ 1£5681 ~~:~E I • Sl[tI(" FASHlOlV.It.l UNES' tMOICI 0113 COlOURS. 0I$1'WCTJVE Jttu: • SEATS FOUR ADULTS IN COMFORT. (Giovani and Maria's young son), Giovanni Terroni (Raffaele's brother) Now on to this month's article... and Luigi Terroni. Fainiglia Terroni Luigi Terroni was born in the year 1853 way up in the mountains of Northern Italy in the little hamlet of Vesrada which lies just above Pontremoli near Massa Carrara. At a very early age the young Luigi set off from his paesc leaving behind his family and young girlfriend Caterina Terroni (same name, different family). It must have taken a great deal of courage for one so young to embark into the unknown in order to find a better life. However. like so r:· - -; many of our pacsani in those early years, there really wasn't mueh alternative. Luigi made his way across northem Italy finding work where he could and travelling mostly on foot. Eventually he reached Paris where he stayed for a while but clearly Paris wasn't the answer so on he went finally crossing the Channel to England. Journey's end for Luigi was London and it was here in Warner Street '11 Quartiere Italiano' where he found the answer living amongst other Italians, no doubt sharing a room with other men like himself. ,seeking a living and a hope for the future. Luigi worked and saved. He rented a small shop premises in Summer Street selling Italian provisions. He made enough money to return to Italy where he claimed his 'Caterina. They married and returned to England and his little business. Their first home was in a little house in Warner Strcet opposite a large dwelling house (Warner House where many other immigrants lodged). It was in this house that the young couple raised their family: Luigi Terroni Snr around 1900 8 their first child was Giovanni born in 1881; followed by Roberto in 1885; then Raffaele in 1890; Maria in 1893 and Lctizia in 1895. From 1881 up to 1895 Caterina actually gave birth to ten children but lost five which in those days would have been about average. The surviving children thrived and as they grew up the two older boys worked for the business which was doing pretty well, in faet a second shop was set up - a wine shop in Clerkenwell Road. no. 138, where they rented the premises from SI. Peter's Italian Church. The shop was situated next door to the church and the land is still owned by the Church today. In 1902. when Raffaele was just 12 years old. his father Luigi fell ill and as a result the young boy had to leave sehool in order to help his brothers in the business. In those far off days helping in the family business meant working from dawn till dusk. However, things were going well and they were now employing other immigrants to work for them. The workers lived in the rooms over the shop in Summer Street: Ten years on Raffaele, now 22, married a pretty little Neapolitan girl (see wedding photo). who also lived June 94 :J;~FJLA in '11 Quartiere·. Paola Maria De Falco. Paola's family wcre from Saviano a village on the outskirts of Naples. The young couple moved in with the Terroni family and their first baby Caterina was born there. The substantial increase in family mcmbers must have prompted their first move in 1914. Not too far from the business and still in Warner Street was a fairly large property on the corner of Little Bath Street (Eyre Street Hill today) and' Warner Street. nos. 32-34, spacious . rooms over a warehouse. The original Terroni family and their offspring lived in this home for 27 years. Raffaele's second baby. Luisa. was born in the same year that the family moved into the new home., The younger families now had their own spaee and were all quite content to live with family. It was during this same period that the shop in Summer Street and the rooms above were destroyed by fire. One of the workers who lived above the shop only just managed to escape by jumping out of onc of the top floor windows. As a result of the fire the main business was transferred to Clerkenwell Road and combined with the wine shop. L. Terroni Gi/lgno 94 COMUNITA' ITAUANA' • & Sons became the well known ,Jiaffaele's wife Paola, longing to delicatessen. familiar to all who lived in '11 Quartiere' over a period of many years. On August 14th 1914 Britain declared war on Germany. Italy. in a bid to reclaim their land East of the Adriatic, joined the allies by declaring war on Austria, the date May 23rd 1915. Robcrto (the second eldest) was conscripted into the British Army where he served the major part of the war in Italy. Meanwhile Ralfaele was employed by the ltaI: ian government and sent to Italy in a civilian eapacity where he was put to work as an interpreter. During the course of his woik he travelled the length and breadth of war tom northern Italy. 1917 was a tragic year for the family. They lost young Maria who died in the prime of life aged 24. Some of the older members of the community remember the beautiful young girl lying in state when, as children. they entered the Terroni home to sce her and pay their last respects. Papa Luigi diea that same year aged 64. Giovanni. Roberto and Ralfaele were now partners in the business. sce· her husband and her family made the return journey to saviano. taking with her her two little girls, Caterina and Luisa. They set off accompanied by a friend of the family on a roundabout journey which was long and arduous by train and boat to avoid trouble spots as war was still raging - what courage they had in those daysl However they arrived safely and Paola stayed with family and Ralfaele made his way down from the ,North for a joyous reunion with his Wire and children. It was in saviano Italy in September 1918 that,Luigi Terroni came into the world; the only member of Ralfacle's family to be born in Italy. When the baby Luigi was six months old the family returned to London and '11 Quartiere·... I will continue with the story of Famiglia Terroni in next month's edition. The photo of the Procession shown here was possibly taken in the late'20s. I'm putting it in this month because it will establish exactly where the Terroni home was. The people looking out of the windows are friends and family members. 9 :J:.~Fll.A COMUNITA'ITALIANA Meeting Giovani Last year we were a motley crew of 5, totally unprepared but nevertheless absorbed by the atmosphere of the Meeting Giovani of the PaIlottini at Grottaferrata. My orders (thoughito-one would admit to using such. a word) were' to ,bring a round dozen to this year's gathering. Well, what we lacked in quantity we made up for in quality. "This happy breed of men"· from the "scepter'd isle"· were three males: Mirko Morena, Daniele Vizzachero and Mario Zeppettelli and six females; Olive Besagni, Maria Pagano, Nicky Pagnotta, Johanna Powell, Luciana Solari and yours truly. We ranged from the ages of 13 to 50 plus (and a big plus at thatl). It may be a meeting giovani but as we all know: you are as young as you feel. This 'year we decided to follow the scouts and "be prepared". From the outset we had three strict rules which were to be adhered to within the Christian context. We ealled them the three "O"s (spot the spelling mistake): Openness - each had a right and was encouraged to express their opinions rather than wait until theY had gone home to have a moan; Honesty - there was nothing to fear and no feelings to hurt! Off your ar** - no-one was going to sit around and criticise. If you didn't like something, say so, then get up and do something about it. Maybe it was· because we were such im ad-hoc group; maybe it waS because there was at least somcone in the group that Was a stranger; maybe it was because we were there because We wanted to be and not because we had . to be; maybe it was because of our three rules; maybe it joanna Giacon was because of It Russo's loud flat si ngi ng who could stay shy after that!; maybe it was something else altogether. But whatever it was I can quite simply say that in all of my experiences working with different people and different groups I have never been with a bunch of people who have got on so well with each other and where there was such a wonArmedwith the derful atmosphere. I even looked forward to giving up my Friday evenings for the meetingsl EveI)' obstacle was approached as if swatting a fly. For those not confident with their Italian the play was mimed and narrated. No time to learn the 20 or more songs? - let's tape them and listen to them at home. Those that didn't understand Italian were assigned an interpreter we were a team, a family, and no-one was going to feel left out. I firmly believe that the more you put in the more you get out. We had all participated in the preparation (rule no. 3) and whatever happened in Rome, I for one had enjoyed myself. The week in Rome, however, was beyond our wildest expectations. We were treated as royalty. We were paired up (except for Mario) and stayed as guests of some of the parishioners of Regina Pacis at Ostia. Luciana and I were at the parish house, a very handy subbase for the group. Eaeh of the group could not get over the Curtain call on Balthazar 10 ",' '. T-Shirts and the sun ofGrottaferrata hospitality and warmth of their· hosts. Short of rolling out a red carpet wherever we went there was little else they could have done. There was nothing we could not do. Audience with the Pope? Tiekets were sitting there waiting for us. Assisi? Here arc the keys to the minibus. Rome by night? What time shall we leave? Sun? Not a eloud in the sky. I had had the wonderful time of experiencing the hospitality of the parish priest at Ostia last year. Don Tonino "Ho da fa' H. Lotti comes across as a hurrier, a workaholic we all know the type. He hates fuss and detests thank yous. Well whether he likes them or not he certainly has them from nine "inglesi" who were amazed at how this busy man seemed to put everything on hold for us, looked after evel)' detail and entertained us wonderfully (aided and abetted by the able Don Mario Morelli). Our rules in London were flown over with us on the charter flight. Each day there would be open discussion about what to do, when and with whom. There was· time for the beach, time for the Pope, time for San Franccsco, time for the Fontana dei Trevi, time for family visits, time for San Vincenzo. This year's meeting - oh yes, that is what we were there for - had as its theme "Gcsu' e' iI Signore". We introduced ourselves with a song, June 94 :/!f;~EU.A adventu~oU~ly sung aecaix:lla (perhaps thiS IS too polite let alone a wholly inaccurate description) which began: "Onoriamo Vinccnzo Pallotti 11 fondator della nostra chicsa. Mass was said, lunch eaten under the wonderful Italian sun, games were. played (for the second year mnmng a tearn member was in the victorious side) and then for the afternoon.- As with last year each group was invited to sing,' dance, act, talk, even sleep for 10 minutes This year we had no need of BeaUcs' songs. This year we had Balthazar. The play was based on the legend that Balthazar, one of the wise men, who many years later sold all he had and went to seek Gesu' il Signore. On the winding road he ~et a poor man, took pity on him and gave him some money. At the top of th.e mountain he eame across a WIdow and her family who gave him shelter. He gave them more of his goods. Then in the descrt nomads gave him the last of their drink - he gave them the last of his wealth. He then :trrived at Galilee famished. He ate hiS fill of bread and fish - there was no need to pay for this food only the desire to eat it. Having asked who to thank he discovered Gesu'" iI Signore but was ashamed that he had come so far yet had n?thing to give him in homage. He did not understand when the Lord said he had seen all that Balthazar h:td ~?ne until it was explained to lum: ' Whatever you do to the least of my brothers, you do unto me" Luciana was volunteered to ~ar- Giugno 94 COMUNITA'ITAUANA With Don Tonino (left) and Don Moria the pressure finally tells on the young ladsl rate (we justified it under rule 3), Mirko played Baitbazar with one of the loudest T-shirts I have eVer seen and the rest played characters and SceneI)'. For instance Daniele was p:irt of a market stall then a table, then a nomad, then Jesus. Olive (with onc of the more glamorous parts) was a doorway, a part of a cupboard, a palm tree and an arguing womanl I don't think I have ever been so nervous before the play since Italy played Brazil in the 1982 World Cup when I had my mother on her knees in the kitchen praying to S. Antonio 10 find another goal for Italy! I knew we could do it. Ma)be I wanted evel)'one else to see we could do it. By the reception we received I think they enjoyed it too. But this was just one high of so many in seven days that left us almost floating. Nol that the enthusiasm has waned. At our gathering after our return where wc presented our '''Boss'' P. Russo (who unfortu- nately could not come) with his T-shirt we almost didn't make it to the pizzeria for want of the ehatting the exchanging of photos, the laugh: ter. Spcsso, purtroppo, in molti italiani c'e' iI disprezzo e I'indifferenza. Something worthwhile to share with you after such a long interlude. Yes, a concert in a truly easy, very melodic style, not too taxing, not too profound, just very, very pleasing to the car, and, come to think of it, on the eye too. A veritable delight, but more of this later. Last Sunday evening 15th May saw St. Peter's Italian Cliurch transformed into a truly grandiose, sumptuous concert hall. The occasion? The crew "strive for excellencc" in their job to ensure you are all safe whilst travelling on board their aircraft. Each of the approximately 10,000 cabin staff are trained to a very high standard both in cabin service and in safety equipment and procedures better known to us as SEP. The staff training centre is called "Cranebank" and is the home of instructors who train the cabin staff to the required standard. The "New Entrant" training course begins in the Cabin Services building where you arc taught how to serve passengers in a professional way, deal with problems that may occur on board and learn how to communicate with the customer using skills and techniques. Giving excellent service is the main theme, this is vital to stay ahead. During the Cabin Service training the trainees arc monitored regularly and must achieve successful results in all the exams. The "Aviation Medicine'" course follows and is taught in thc medical school which is run by qualified nurses who instruct each crcw member on how to deal with any medical crisis which may arise during the flight. The Italian community in Britain especially has cause to regret her death since she was one of the few in 1940 who made no secret of her destination of the internment policy and was prepared to devote her time and energies towards alleviating the plight of the women, children and dependents of the men who had been taken into detention. Lengthy obituaries and tributes to Mrs Woodruff have appeared in the national press, notably "The rimes", "The Independent'"' and "The Tablet" and while they list the numerous causes with which she was associated, none of them dwell on her work for the internees and their families during the war years. As the grand-daughter of the eminent historian Lord Aeton she was aware that this aspect of World War 11 which affected Germans, Austrians and Italians normally resident here has still not received any degrce of attention in the published accounts of the war. Mrs Woodruff proved" to be a constant source of encouragement to the present writer in his bid to raise 'The awareness of the eonsequenees of internment. Although deeply absorbed in relief and charitable work from the start of the war, Mrs Woodruff was drawn to the plight of the Italians in the wake of the sinking of the Arandora Star. Unsure as to how many men had sailed on the ship on JUly I, the authorities had difficulty preparing lists of victims and survivors. Mrs Woodruff performed the unenviable role of dealing wilh personal enquiries from relatives and friends in London, a heartrending business as she would recall. It would be some time before the full extent of the tragedy could be assessed. Suffice to state that close on 500 Italians perished with the Arandora Star. As for the remaining internees, they had been assigned to unspecified destinations where they were to be held for an indefinite period. Not sUbjeet to the criminal 36 }.Dunleavy law. or the POW regulations, the legal status of the internees and their families was unclear. What was clear was that internment had broken up families and frequently led to the closure of businesses. 1940 proved to be a traumatic experience for the Italian community. ~" Mrs Woodruff and a few friends realised that apart from access to information, the Italian community which prided itself on its self-help and independence had need of material aid and towards this end she set up the Italian Internees Aid Committee. Part of the funds were subsCribed by friends and well-wishers though Mrs Woodruff was able to draw on the welfare funds at the former Italian Embassy under the supervision of a Brazilian diplomat, Brazil being the protecting power for Italians. heartrending work..... (she wrote to Mackenzie) .....The ruthless cruelty of transporting hundreds of people who have never been before tribunals and sorted out on their merits is very difficult to explain always, and we are trying to make their bitterness less by befriending them. The distress is very great, and it is not easy to gain much support for Italians today...... In fact the whole idea of internment applied to aliens normally resident here was abhorrent to Mrs Woodruff and she welcomed a change in public opinion noticeable in the late summer of 1940. This led to improvements inside the camps and later still a staged release plan. However, while it lasted, the status of the victims was less enviable than that of a POW or a common criminal. "Not one internee has received the common justiee accorded to a criminal caught in the act..... Mrs Woodruff wrote a little later to Mackenzie), .....and the sending overseas of unclassified people is unbelievable.. .I saw today two reports on the camps from released internees, themselves fugitives from anti-Jewish lawruthless cruelty oftransporting hundred ofpeople" It says much for the character of s". Anyone needing accommodation has two basic options: they can become a tenant of a local authority. housing association or private landlord; alternatively they can become owner-occupiers of a residential property which they own themselves. In most cases owner-occupiers will need to finance the purchase of the properly which is to become their family home, as it is most unlikely that they will be able to purchase the properly outright from their own financial resources. This article will attempt to give a general overview of this area of finance by: 1. explaining the nature of a mortgage; 2. outlining the various methods of repaying a mortgage; 3. considering the measures that can be taken to ensure the mortgage repayments are maintained or that the mortgage is repaid in certain events. What is a mortgage? A mortgage is a long-term loan (usually between 25 and 30 ycars) which is used to purchase property. The properly is used as security for the loan and it is usual for the deeds to the properly to be lodged with the lender. If you fail to pay back the loan. the lender can compel you to sell the properly and settle the debt out of the proceeds. Although the deeds are in your name and you remain in possession of the properly. the lender will impose certain restrictions on what you can do with the property until the loan is repaid whereupon you will gain outright ownership. This is such an important consideration that lenders arc required by law to give the following "financial health warning" in writing on all advertisements or correspondence promoting mortgage finance: "Your Home Is At Risk If You Do Not Keep Up Repayments On A Mortgage Or Other Loan Secured On It". Rellaying a Mortgage There are several methods of repaying the loan. Each method needs to be considered and the onc best suited to your particular circumstances chosen to ensure the mortgage is repaid in the most effective way possible. The various methods are summarised as follows:1. Repaymen//Annuity Alar/gage: the monthly repayments to the lender Gillgno 94 Richard Si/via consist of both capital and interest. As long as the amount of the monlhly repayment is adjusted in line with changes in the rate of interest, and no arrears are allowed to build up, the mortgage will be repaid at the end of the chosen mortgage term. Normally it is considered prudent (although not obligatory) for the 1J?rrower to take out a mortgage protection policy to repay the mortgage in the event of the borrower's premature death during the mortgage term. As the mortgage debt reduces on an annual basis (given that the capital is gradually being repaid), a decreasing term assurance policy is effected to cover the reducing debt. lump sum payable under the pension arrangement. The policy holder can take up to 25% of the pension fund as a lax-free lump sum (to repay the mortgage) and use the remaining 75% of the fund to purehase an annuity which will give him his pension (i.e. income in retirement). 4. Other In/eres/ Only Mar/gages: there is no reason why lenders will insist that interest' only mortgages are restricted to either (2) or (3) above. Lenders who take a practical view are willing to consider alternative vehicles for repaying the capital in full on maturity of the mortgage, provided the borrower can demonstrate that he has a definite and credible plan. Alternative methods of funding the repayment of the mortgage could include investment in: Personal Equity Plans. Unit Trusts or even Foreign Currency Mortgages. Such alternatives will appeal to the more sophisticated bor•rower with a greater awareness of the mechanics of sueh schemes. 2. Endowment Mar/gage: under this loan repayment method the borrower pays the lender only enough money to cover the interest aecruing on the capital. Therefore the original level of borrowing remains the same as there is no built-in mechanism to repay the capital. Instead the borrower is required to make re/!'I1ar premiums to an endowment poltcy. The policy consists oflwo elements: life assurance equivalent to the mortgage debt to ensure repayment of the loan in the event of the borrower's premature death; and an investment element which aims to provide a lax free lump sum to repay the capital at the end of the mortgage term. The actual endomnent policy can either be "With Profits". "Low Start"., "Low CostlLow Start'" or '''Unit-Linked'' - each of whieh is a variation oflhe above concept. 3. Pension Mar/gage: as with (2) above. the borrower pays only enough to the lender to mectthe interest of the capital. In addition the borrower, is required to pay a regular premium on a personal pension plan arrangement, plus a further premium for a level term assurance policy to ensure that the loan is repaid in full if the borrower dies prior to the end of the agreed mortgage term. The final repayment of the mortgage will be taken from the lax-free General Financial Considerations Given that there are wide range of mortgage schemes available from a variety of lenders, it is very important to choose a repayment scheme that is the most appropriate to your circumstances and best suited to your needs. This is essential as a mortgage will probably be, by far, the largest financial commitment you are likely to encounter in your life. In view of the long term nature of a mortgage advance, it is also necessary to consider the possible impact of the following on your ability to repay any outstanding mortgage: I. premature death; 2. redundancy; 3. temporary sickness or disability, preventing you from working; 4. critical illness or total permanent disability. It would be advisable to effect a protection policy to safeguard against eaeh ofthe above possibilities. The information above is based upon our understanding of current legislation and lax regulations, whieh are both subject to change. On the train waIl were wrillen the words "Burn the Jews". I have seen the rise of racism here ovcr the last several months, but for me, this was too much. The Nazi skins here in Italy have been growing in number and their presence is beginning to be felt and obviously seen. I also saw the same slogan, not long after, wrillen in Anagnina which is the station from which the buses depart for the suburbs in southern Rome. Growing up I remember hearing stories about the atrocities that were commilled against the Jews as well as Catholics in the Nazi Germany era. I hope that history is not repeating itself. It is just t1tis kind of "start" that gets the seed germinating for that sort of disaster to happen once again. It is very easy for us to blame another group for the' troubles that we are expericncing. They become our scapegoats and we become vengeful for what wc perceive them having done to us. Even in our own lives it is always easier to blame someone else for our own misfortunes. This sad fact became most evident to me in reading the history of Germany during World War 11. What really, brought it to a deeper sense of reality for me was the viewing of a film that had been made by the German SS to boast about the "good work" that they were doing. How can anyone be proud of their participation in the effort to try to exterminate an cntire race of peoplc? They thcmselves made this film and hid nothing of what they wcrc doing. For mc it was truly a nightmare. How could anyonc 40 go to bed at night and sleep soundly with this atrocity on their conscience? Do our young people know all the facts and history of the Nazi movement? How did this sin of racism once again rear its ugly head? Even if this movement fizzles out the sad fact is that prejudice is still a fact of life. In America at the turn of the century when the Italians were emigrating in force to discover a new and better way of life, the people especially in New York were often heard saying that the "ginnies" were only good for repairing shoes and assorted odd menial jobs. They were looked down upon as second class citizens. unfortunatley many Italians became ashamed of their heritagc while other groups remained very proud of their traditions. It was so bad that many refused to teach their children the Italian language and insisted that they interg rat e themselves' even at the cost of loosing their old culture and heritage. When we do not respect the cultures and the mentality of another group we not only do a disservice to them but also to ourselves. Every culture has many positive aspects to it which.can be adopted by others to better their own lives and make their own experience of living a much richer one. I wonder why racism exists. It seems that in the face of a culture we are unfamiliar with we become defensive because we perceive it as a threat to our own. Instead of trying to understand, we condemn. Our own culture carries with it a sense of identity and security. When faced with another culture we are challenged. The easier thing to do in a case like this is to continue in our own ways and, in fact, defend what we believe. We close ourselves off and in doing so refuse to "dialogue". This is where the Michele Scotto SAC prejudice begins. It may very well be true that a certain culture may be very aggressive or very lazy, this does not mean that the culture is any less of an expression of how to deal with life. There are always positives which must be looked at. If wc ostracize a certain group of people because of their ways how do we ext>!:Ct them to react to us?'Thcy too WIll become defensive. Here tS where a vicious circle begins. They will refuse to intergrate with us and then wc accuse them of the same thing that we are doing. This circle will continue and then escalate into something much more ugly. Secondly, sometimes prejudice does not come out of misunderstanding but rather from jealousy. For example in America certain groups established themselves into their own comfortable positions. They wanted nOoQne to threaten that position. This usually meant in the area of a good job. This racism was one way to hinder a group from obtaining a position that might displace another group. Thirdly we must remember that as human beings we rely very strongly on our scnse of identity. This identity defines us as people. It also give us our reference point in life. When this is threatened we also react defcnsively against the perceived threat that we are encountering. This is what I mentioned earlier is usually the root of the problem. Fourthly it come about through our own sense of insecurity. This is also tied in with the third point. All of these things tied together make for us this great problem which we encounter in our everyday lives. I'm sure that we all will agree that it is always easier to run away from a challengc than it is to face it. If we look at a different culturc as being "incompatiblc" with our own wc have accomplished nothing. It is up to us to take the iniliative to look for the positives - and they do exist. I would dread for the "Final solution" to once again become a reality as it did in Nazi Germany. This was truly the greatest and most heinous eXample of' what prejudice can do and become. I' recently heard a song on the radio that said "We all live under the same sun, wc all sleep undcr the same moon, wc all look up at the same stars... SO why, why can't we live as one?", ' I hope I have made my· point. Secret Rapture is an adaptation by David Hare of his stage play., The programme notes stated: "...(h) tells of a psychological and sexual entanglement of a young woman who on the death of her father finds herself embroiled in betrayal and family conflict with her young lover, her over-bearing sister and her alcoholic step-mother". I found these comments somewhat misleading. Let there be no doubt that this was a remarkable performance by Gcorge Graham's men. Parma started at an' incredible pace and Brolin twice nearly scored in the opening minutes. Worse still, the Cup Winners Cup holders were closing down the space in mid field, getting to the ball first and dominating play. In other words, doing an "Arsenal" on their opponents. Without ]ensen and Wright, it looked as if the best chance of stealing a goal was going to come from a set piece. Halfway through the first half, however, a spectacular overhead clearance was chested down by Alan Smith on the edge of the box who rammed his left foot shot in off the post. Arsenal had crept precisely into the lead. If Brolin's shot had bounced in a similar way tllen' it would have been much more difficult for Gcorge Graham's men to chase the game with largely a defensive mid field comprising both Sellcy and Morrow. The longer the game went on, the more possession Parma had but the less troubled Seaman became. Arsenal got men back behind the ball and defended with the intellect and determination ,that we have grown to expect from Gcorge's side. I commented in the last issue on the value of Steve Bould to the team and I was delighted to sce that this underrated player has at last gained some recognition by being, picked at the age of 31 to play for England alongside Tony Adams.
