I live in Brighton and work in London. It’s cold, so I’m taking a jacket. > > Abito a Brighton e lavoro a Londra. Fa freddo, quindi mi prendo una giacca. • I connettivi nelle proposizioni coordinate ◆ Una proposizione coordinata aggiunge altre informazioni alla proposizione principale e viene introdotta da and (e), or (o, oppure), but (ma). But è preceduto da una virgola. > We cooked the food and they bought the drinks. You can borrow the book from the library or I can lend you it. The key turned in the lock, but the door wouldn’t open. > John was walking fast and (he) wasn’t looking where he was going. You can pay now or (you can) take out a credit agreement. I looked out of the window, but (I) couldn’t see anyone in the street. Nel dettaglio, si usa: ■ so (così, quindi) per l’effetto > I’m tired, so I’m going to have a rest. ■ Sono stanco, così/quindi vado a riposarmi. because (perché), as e since (siccome, poiché, dal momento che, giacché) per la causa She couldn’t go to the post office because it was Sunday. As it was very windy we decided not to go for a walk on the cliffs. > Sheila won’t know what to do tomorrow since they haven’t been in touch with her. > > Non è potuta andare all’ufficio postale perché era domenica. E NON John was busy, so couldn’t go to the party. However è sempre seguito da una virgola > I know it’s late. However, we have to finish this work this evening. The lake is dangerous. Therefore it will be closed to the public. ■ > Lo so che è tardi. Tuttavia dobbiamo finire questo lavoro stasera.
