important religious monument founded by
Alexios Komninos in 1088. Simple and
unpretentious, it blends perfectly with the
environment and with the rugged cliffs that
protect it and make it visible only from the
sea. The nunnery took its name from
Hozova, in the Holy Hand, where the icon
came from.
ñ St. John Valsamitis church, built on the
ruins of a spring-oracle, where the faithful
used to get holy water. Tradition has it that
depending on the color the water would
change into, people could tell if the outcome
of what they were about to do would be
positive or negative.
ñ The Holy Trinity tower in Arkessini. A
Hellenistic tower, perhaps the tallest found
so far, preserved by Lila Maragou.
ñ The archaeological museum, housed in a
mansion and the Amorgos high school – the
