BOLOGNA, THE GREAT. What a chance, to participate in Zoomark International and stay in a beautiful city! Bologna is art, culture, tradition, museums, villas, boulevards, palaces, squares, churches, abbeys and towers. It is also mouth watering cooking, theatres, cinemas, discos, night clubs, pubs, happenings and shopping. In short, it is a place where to combine the useful with the pleasurable. Heart of the city, cherished by the people in Bologna, is San Petronio, the cathedral that overlooks Piazza Maggiore, one of the highest examples of the Italian gothic architecture: admire the majestic façade that remained unfinished, the main doorway adorned with works of the sculptor Iacopo della Quercia, the grandiose tribune designed by Vignola in the chancel, the rich inlaid wooden work of the choir and the precious silver reliquary that safeguards St. Petronio’s head. Located strategically on the edge of the town and the ancient via Emilia, the Two Towers are Bologna’s landmark and among the few remaining from the 200 towers that the rich and noble families of Bologna built in the Middle Age. Very popular and pictured is the Torre degli Asinelli: 97.20 metres tall, it has 498 steps and an incline of 2.23 metres. The Fontana del Nettuno, which the people in Bologna call the fountain ‘of the giant’, dominates the Piazza del Nettuno; the fountain is embellished with the statue of Neptune with the trident, sirens and little angels by Jean de Boulogne (Giambologna). A walk along the covered walkways called porticos is a must: they stretch over almost 40 kilometres and make Bologna the richest city of porticos in the world. One of the most fascinating one is the portico of San Luca, which connects the city with the sanctuary of Madonna di San Luca on the Colle della Guardia: a 3.5 kilometres rise with a breath-taking view. Having a walk outside regular touristic itineraries you can find many further beautiful and attractive spots, eat good meals and enjoy tasty snacks (no need to remind you that Bologna is known worldwide for its mouth watering culinary tradition) and meet friendly people.
