CONOSCERE ED ESSERE CONOSCIUTI NEL PACKAGING In Europa Omron opera da oltre 30 anni Strategies More and evermore packaging BRANDING Omron develops a new Europe-wide strategy, focused entirely on the packaging market and involving specialized resources, more information for machinery builders and integrators, global assistance and an enhanced and packaging-focused product range. L.G. The Japanese do things well: their quality standards are the highest, they follow rules and the instructions on labels... but compared to westerners, they are very reserved. A little old-fashioned, one would say today, they cherish the principle (now more true than ever, but still not everything) that a product should “speak for itself”. 58 • 11-12/12 It’s a cliché, we know (and of course there are countless exceptions), but it touches upon the core of the matter, which is to say the new strategies implemented by Omron. A global leader in the automation sector, headquartered in Japan, Omron has been present on the European market for more than 30 years (slightly less in Italy), during which time it has consolidated its e, in Italia oggi detiene una quota di mercato fra il 10 e il 15%, con sbocchi prevalenti nell’imballaggio. Today the multinational is investing intelligence and resources in a unique international operation that ties knowhow, service capacity and a desire for communication. The plan’s objectives are numerous and converge on the promotion of a hardware and software automation offer with unique characteristics, dedicated to packaging machinery manufacturers, but also to their end user customers. These end users, notes jokingly (but not too jokingly) Francesca Gaetani, Italian director of the packaging project «have gotten used to managing their machines with no functional or maintenance issues, while forgetting that oftentimes they owe this to the quality of Omron automation...». KNOWING AND BEING KNOWN IN PACKAGING Omron has operated in Europe for over 30 years and holds a market share in Italy of between 10 and 15%, primarily in packaging applications. Its orientation toward service and its packaging focus make it one of the most authoritative interlocutors for builders and integrators of machinery for primary, secondary and final packaging. «Everyone knows who we are and what we produce - Gaetani observes - and, most importantly, they know from experience that our engineers have always worked side-by-side with the designers, in a virtuous circle of exchanges that result in tailored, value-generating solutions. What we now wish to communicate more systematically and clearly to our natural partners (OEMs) and their www.dativoweb.net [ INDUSTRY & MANAGEMENT ] Sysmac e gli altri ferta Omron, completa sotto tutti i punti di vista. In altre parole, possiamo dire che lo svilup- customers are the characteristics of Omron’s offer, which is complete in every way. And this is all the more true since the development and launching of the Sysmac platform, because, in fact, - the manager highlights - we are now able to offer manufacturers a tool that simplifies to an extreme degree the planning of motion and controls, enabling them to enhance the performance of a machine at any moment and based on the necessities of the application at hand, without compromising precision, speed or functioning. This tool, the only of its kind on the market, manages to integrate a vision system with machine control. This makes for considerable advantages, especially in terms of the basic requirements typical of the packaging industry. In other words, we can say that the development of www.dativoweb.net po della piattaforma Sysmac ha cambiato in maniera sostanziale la nostra concezione di automazione industriale: non partiamo più dall’idea di proporre singoli componenti per una macchina, ma abbiamo messo in campo una soluzione di sistema». Qualità ed efficacia delle proposte tecnologiche, nonché il valore di un’assistenza globale, giocata su disponibilità e massima competenza, sono quindi gli atouts da spendere (bene) sul mercato: «Siamo convinti - spiega ancora Gaetani - di aver costruito nel tempo tutti i presupposti per essere riconosciuti come specialist partner di automazione dai costruttori di linee di confezionamento, ma anche dagli utilizzatori delle macchine, ovunque essi siano e in qualsiasi settore operino, alimentare e farmaceutico in the Sysmac platform has fundamentally changed our notion of industrial automation: we no longer start from the idea of proposing individual components for a machine, because we have developed a systemic solution». The quality and effectiveness of the technologies offered, not to mention the value of a global assistance network, rooted in availability and maximum competency, are thus the winning cards to be (well) played on the market: «We are convinced Gaetani continues - that we have managed to build over the years the foundations for recognition as a specialist partner in automation by packaging line manufacturers, but also by the users of their machinery, wherever they are and in whatever sector they operate, food and pharmaceuticals first and foremost. Sysmac … and the others An essential architecture, based on open hardware and software, for controlling the entire machine or production cell with a single instrument, speedy and easy to program. These the characteristics of Omron’s Sysmac alias System for Machine Automation Control: a simple automation platform, hence, but powerful and reliable, based on a Sysmac NJ controller and that integrates motion, PLC control, networking and optical inspection. The Sysmac Studio software also includes configuration, programming, simulation and monitoring while the EtherCAT network acts as a connector between control and movement, vision sensors and actuators. The first and immediate advantage of this architecture hence is that it synthesizes all the Omron features in a single platform, with PLC and motion integrated in the same controller and the field devices managed by a single machine network and programmed by a single software. With Sysmac the constructors hence have a tool that enormously simplifies motion and control design, enabling the performance of the machine to be expanded in any moment in time, depending on the needs dictated by the application, without compromising accuracy and speed. But alongside Sysmac (where new developments are imminent, Ed.), devised to manage speedier and more complex high performance lines, Omron’s products dedicated to more simple applications also deserve a mention: industrial PLCs and PCs, devices for motion control, inverters, sensors, vision and safety systems, servodrives, relay thermoregulators, timers, counters, robot monitoring systems… 11-12/12 • 59 [ INDUSTRY & MANAGEMENT ] primis. And now is the time to capitalize to the utmost on our resources». AN INTRANET WITH CLEAR SKILL AREAS Omron’s project is without a doubt a challenging one, but the structure created ad hoc in various countries under the direction of the Frenchman Hadrien Maureille is already up and running, and most importantly, motivated. The Italian team clearly demonstrates its philosophy and objectives: : «What cannot be ignored is the fact that we have a great opportunity in addressing an industry that is among the top in the world in terms of the quality of the technologies available, as well as marketing capacity. The Italian packaging team - Gaetani explains - is made up of 11 people, some of them in sales with advanced 60 • 11-12/12 specialization, a group that follows our key clients, be they manufacturers or end users, and some of them marketing specialists who manage information, analyzing the demands collected “live” from the market. In truth, we work in constant contact amongst ourselves and with the Omron teams of this type in other countries, forming a kind of intranet of competencies that maximizes our effectiveness. What’s more, and this is one of the major novelties of this strategy, we “follow” the machine all the way to the end user’s facility, where our personnel dedicate time to training and informing the operators. We think this is the right path to take in order to obtain an important twofold objective: to promote the optimal use of our technology and to enhance the visibility and notoriety of the Omron brand». INDUSTRY & MANAGEMENT ] A word from... Hadrien Maureille, Packaging Market Manager of the Omron Integrated Automation Division, who helps us get a better picture of the European strategy devised by the company and the “Packaging Project” vision. What has led to the need to “systemize” Omron’s position on the packaging market? In order to get where you want to go….you must first identify where you are at a given moment in time. At the beginning of 2012, Omron Europe defined an aggressive penetration strategy targeting specific markets and selected industries. The packaging machinery market was chosen as one of the sales focuses: Omron wants to become a “first choice” automation solution provider for packaging machine builders specialised in the food & beverage, pharmaceutical and cosmetic industry. Everything started from here! In order to apply this strategy and monitor our success in the packaging machinery industry, we strove to better classified our customers, identify the main packaging process steps and create an overview of the major packaging lines. On top of that we studied our comfort zones and identified our possible “battlefields”. Today Omron Europe has mapped the packaging machinery industry and has adopted a systemic approach to market management. How many dedicated structures do you have in Europe and in which countries? How are they set out? Are you satisfied with the results achieved up to now? The size and structure of our subsidiaries reflects past commercial history and the importance of the packaging market potential. Our 18 subsidiaries and 800 engineers cover the most important areas in terms of packaging machinery production, namely: southern Germany, northern Italy, western France and Catalonia, all considered the "Packaging Valleys" in Europe, not to mention the UK. In total, some 100 persons including marketing and support personnel specialised in packaging are engaged in our sales teams … and I reckon that our over 700 strong customer base of packaging OEMs will be ever further involved. What are the greatest advantages that derive from having built an international technicaloperative network dedicated to packaging? When we assist our customers in integrating automation solutions both we and they gain key insights - knowledge that not only enables us to provide the most optimized solution but that also helps us evolve our future products and services. Our European packaging people network empowers our local action, thanks to skill sharing as a careful mapping out of areas of competence at world level. One of the immediate advantages? The development of the new Sysmac platform with packaging machinery software libraries. The immediate advantage for our customer is speedier development thanks to dedicated technology and support from specialised sales engineers. How much has the availability of the Sysmac platform affected things? Was it a change driver? If you have recently visited a packaging fair, no matter where in the world, you would have seen that the use of robotics is increasing. The Delta robot has become a favourite solution for many OEMs. Its particularly lightweight structure and its speed make it a perfect tool for the packaging industry. The development of the new Sysmac platform took into consideration this technology trend and Omron has integrated software libraries for robots that contain all the complex kinematics algorithms needed for Cartesian, Delta, SCARA, portal and gantry robots to perform the most popular packaging functions including pick-andplace, carton and case packing and end-of-line tasks. Saying that the “availability of the Sysmac platform was a change driver” for the creation of the packaging projects is as true as saying that the “packaging industry was a change driver” in encouraging the development of our new generation of controllers. Do you reckon on “replicating” the structure focussed on the packaging market for the other sectors as well? Is it a one-off experiment or is it a sort of “general test”? This is clearly not a one-off experiment. I see this project as a standardisation process that will contribute to structuring our approach to market management and business development. This approach, on the mid term, should favour marketing best practices and new sales initiatives. A gradual shift from a product centric approach to a more customer/market focus is taking place. This is a constructive approach really appreciated by our customers. If you try to talk about your products, your customer will give you 20 minutes of their time. Try to talk about your customer’s machine and he/she will spend hours explaining how they created it and the pitfalls they encountered. This is simply called marketing and indeed we want to extend this systemic approach to all our targeted industries. What do you concretely expect from the Packaging Project? What we concretely expect from the project is to leverage our experience and capitalise on the same by marketing assets & communication tools. And then, we want to build an internal knowledgebase to train sales and technical people on packaging machinery, lines and markets and share the skills and the “language” of packaging specialists. We expect to build cross-promotion tools between products and cross-reference customer stories between applications and machines; but we also want to facilitate the exchange of experience and knowledge between countries. It will offer us the possibility to further specialise the Sysmac platform for packaging machines and, last but not least, to increase our sales and market share on packaging applications in the food & beverage, cosmetics and pharmaceutical industries.
