“Il capitale nel XXI secolo”, che esce ora in edizione italiana per BOMPIANI,
ha scatenato interesse in tutto il mondo e Piketty è stato definito dall’Economist
come il Karl Marx del XXI secolo. Sulla scorta di serie storiche lunghissime, Piketty
documenta l’evoluzione del rapporto fra capitale e lavoro e della distribuzione
del reddito e della ricchezza fra persone. La sua tesi è che fin quando il rendimento
del capitale sarà più alto della crescita dell’economia, le disuguaglianze sono
destinate ad aumentare e la ricchezza a concentrarsi fra l’1% più ricco della
popolazione. I trent’anni di riduzione delle disuguaglianze, che l’Occidente ha vissuto
dopo la seconda guerra mondiale, sarebbero quindi solo un parentesi, destinata
a non ripetersi nel secolo in cui viviamo.
“Capital in the Twenty-First Century”, now released in Italy by BOMPIANI, has attracted the interest
of readers all over the world, and Piketty was hailed as the Karl Marx of the 21st century by
The Economist. On the basis of time series covering up 250 years of world history, Piketty charts
the long-term evolution of the capital-labor ratio and the inequality of income and wealth. His
fundamental assertion is that insofar as the return on capital stays above the growth rate,
inequality is bound to rise and wealth become ever more concentrated around the top 1%
of the distribution. The three decades of reduction in income and wealth inequality experienced
by the West in the aftermath of World War II, were an exception, not likely to be repeated in the
century we are living in.
Thomas Piketty (1971) è directeur d’études all’Ecole des hautes études en sciences sociales
(EHESS) e professore di economia politica alla Paris School of Economics. Economista celebre
per i suoi studi sulla dinamica della disuguaglianza del reddito e della ricchezza nella storia del
capitalismo, sì è formato all’Ecole Normale Supérieure e alla London School of Economics,
ed è stato ricercatore al MIT.
Thomas Piketty (1971) is presently directeur d’études at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Science
Sociales (EHESS) and Professor of Economics at the Paris School of Economics. He became
famous for his studies on the dynamics of inequality of income and wealth in the history of
capitalism. He studied mathematics and economics at Ecole Normale Supérieure and London
School of Economics, before teaching at MIT as Assistant Professor for a few years.
