FROM THE DESK OF THE HEADMASTER 13.10.11 Dear Parents, We are in the second month of school year already! We had a perfectly wonderful day for our STRACAT Fun Run Day on Sunday (from now on to be called ISTATHON – the new, official name of the activity), where everyone present enjoyed beautiful Torino sunshine, a barbecue (with a pasta option, of course) and the chance to meet and chat with friends, family and members of the IST community. STRACAT is one of the oldest and most traditional of IST’s community activities – having been run for more than 20 years. We hope everyone – old and young alike – had a good time and many thanks to the hard-­‐working members of the PTA who really overextended themselves to make it a pleasant day enjoyed by all. PARENT-­‐TEACHER’S ASSOCIATION – PTA For its NEXT activity, the Parent-­‐Teachers Association would like to invite all members of the school community to its Winter Bazaar, scheduled to be held on the school’s campus on Sunday, November 27. It will be a fun day for the whole family where you can also purchase gifts for your end-­‐of-­‐the year celebrations. More specific information on this Winter Bazaar will be forthcoming, but please be sure to mark the date on your calendar! UPPER SCHOOL SPORTS DAY – OCTOBER 28TH All Upper School students will be participating in our annual Upper School Sports Day which will be held on the campus of the school next week – on Friday, October 28. While more details will follow, sent directly by the physical education department, please note the date on your calendar. 20th ANNIVERSARY OF IST’S FIRST IB DIPLOMA GRADUATES It is significant to note that 2012 marks the 20th Anniversary of our first IB Diploma Graduating Class, which registered its achievement in June, 1992. That class of first IB graduates has produced a consultant, another is a dentist, one is an architect, one works for the UN and one was a very good golfer (he died of cancer several years ago). There were only seven graduates. 2011 IB GRADUATES Congratulations are in order to last June’s IB Diploma students who registered the highest average score yet recorded at IST – an average score of 32, when the international average is 29. One of IST’s students received a 44, when the highest score possible is a 45. DIPLOMA PROGRAM PARENT INFORMATION NIGHT -­‐ THURSDAY There will be Parent Information Evening for the parents of all Upper School students (Grades 8-­‐11) where we will be presenting the benefits of pursuing the IB Diploma to all interested parents. This meeting is particularly important for parents of current eighth and tenth grade students who are at decision points in their children’s education. The meeting will be held on this Thursday evening, October 20 from 7 until 8:30 PM in the Assembly Hall of the school and will be coordinated by the Coordinator of our Diploma Program, Mr. Ron Entwistle. Teachers will also be available to answer questions about the IB program at the Upper School level. TENTH GRADER CECILIA CLOT WINS IB INTERNATIONAL ART AWARD. Sincere congratulations are in order to Tenth Grader Cecilia Clot who, over the summer months, was informed that her painting was chosen as First Place in the International Baccalaureates International Painting Contest. The painting, which was submitted during the past school year, is available and visible on the school’s website. MIDDLE SCHOOL MATH COMPETITION WITH OTHER SCHOOLS We are pleased to announce IST’s the first (we hope to become) annual “Middle School Math Competition” at The International School of Turin which will be held on Saturday, November 12, 2011, from 08.45 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. Various schools, both public and private, from within the vicinity of IST have been invited to participate. Mr. John Mores, with the help of the Upper School math department, is organizing the event. Our students’ participation in the math competition will aid in developing an attitude of excellence as well as enjoyment, challenge, and satisfaction towards mathematics. Students will have the opportunity to complete interesting math problems, and all students will receive a participation token. At the end of the competition, first, second and third place awards will be presented for each category in the competition. These categories include individual and team competition awards. HEADMASTER’S LIST AND HONOR ROLL We are happy to announce the reinstatement of the traditional HEADMASTER’S LIST and HONOR ROLL, which haven’t been calculated recently. Based on grades received during the second semester of last school year, please find attached the names of the following students who are included on the HEADMASTER’S LIST and the HONOR ROLL for the second semester of 2010-­‐2011. NEW PRE-­‐SCHOOL LUNCH PROGRAM As we begin re-­‐working some of our lunch services, we looked to the pre-­‐school where we have begun serving the lunches family style – that is the food is brought to the tables and served to the students who are already sitting. This not only avoids the difficulty of managing a big tray with plates and cups on it, it creates a more comfortable ambiance where children can enjoy their meals in a more organized atmosphere. Congratulations to the Pre-­‐
School Teachers, Mark Starr, the Lower School Dean and the “Good School Food” team for this first re-­‐working of the school lunch program. Other projects are in the works. SUMMARY OF THE BOARD MEETING MINUTES OF JUNE, 2011. As we all know, the International School of Turin is controlled by an 8 member Board of Directors that is elected annually by members of the International School of Turin Association. Summaries of the non-­‐
confidential decisions taken at its monthly meetings are published and made available to all members of the school community and will be posted in the Board of Directors portal of the website as soon as our technicians finish getting all the portals set up. Until then, the summary of the June, 2011 Board meeting minutes are available by accessing the Alumni section on the webpage, clicking on the “Board of Directors” or by contacting M. Jona in Main Office ([email protected]) who will be happy to e-­‐mail you a copy. UNITED NATIONS OPEN DOOR DAY On this coming Sunday, October 23rd, the United Nations Campus here in Turin will host an Open Door Day, which is held every year to celebrate the birthdate of the United Nations, which is on October 24. There will be presentations and activities on campus for allthose interested in learning more about what the UN does in Turin. All members of the IST community are welcome to attend and our Model United Nations students are planning on being there. PARENT-­‐TEACHER CONFERENCES. Please mark your calendar’s for this semester’s Parent-­‐Teacher Conferences, which have been scheduled for the afternoons of November 21, 22 and 23. This is an important time for you to sit down with the teachers of your children to evaluate, together with the school, how and what your child is doing. A schedule of appointments will be distributed to all families during the coming week. WINTER PROGRAM DECEMBER 19 AND 20 Please include on your schedules Monday morning, December 19, from 11:10 until 12:15 for the Grades 1 and 2 Winter Concert and for Tuesday morning, December 20, for Grades 3 and 4. More information about this end of the semester program which is being organized by the Lower School teachers, will follow. MID-­‐TERM BREAK Please be reminded that no classes will be held at the school during the week of October 31 to November 4, as the school will be celebrating its first semester Mid-­‐

If your concern is administative in nature (problems with the school lunch or bus services, uniforms, invoices or other administrative concerns) you should first contact the Main Office which is just at the front door of the original Villa. If you feel your needs were not sufficiently met or responded to by the staff in the Main Office, you can always contact our Operations Manager, Mr. Luigi Buson, directly. 13/10/2011 Gentili Genitori, Abbiamo già iniziato il secondo mese di scuola! La settimana scorsa abbiamo trascorso una bellissima giornata alla STRACAT, (ora ufficialmente chiamata ISTATHON). E’ stata una bella giornata di sole, una grigliata (naturalmente con un primo di pasta) e per tutti la possibilità di parlare con gli amici ed i membri della comunità scolastica. La STRACAT è una delle manifestazioni più vecchie dell’IST che si svolge senza interruzione da più di 20 anni. Speriamo che tutti i partecipanti, vecchi e nuovi, si siano divertiti e ringraziamo tutti i membri del PTA che hanno lavorato con impegno per rendere questa manifestazione piacevole ed un successo per tutti. PARENT TEACHER’S ASSOCIATION – PTA Il prossimo evento organizzato dal PTA a cui siamo tutti invitati è il Winter Bazaar che si terrà domenica 27 novembre a scuola. Ricordate di segnare anche questa la data sul vostro calendario. 20° ANNIVERSARIO DEI PRIMI DIPLOMATI IB Desideriamo portare alla vostra attenzione che l’anno 2012 segna il 20° Anniversario della prima IB Graduating Class diplomatasi nell’anno 1992. Gli alunni di quella classe erano solo sette, alcuni di loro sono dei professionisti; un consulente, un dentista un architetto, un dipendente delle Nazioni Unite ed un bravo golfista (purtroppo scomparso già da diversi anni). DIPLOMATI 2011 Congratulazioni ai diplomati del 2011 che hanno ottenuto negli esami IB la media più alta di sempre all’IST. La media dei voti è stata 32 (la media internazionale è 29) ed un’allieva ha ottenuto la votazione di 44 sfiorando il voto massimo dell’IB che è 45. RIUNIONE INFORMATIVA PER IL DIPLOMA PROGRAM Questa settimana si terrà una riunione informativa per le famiglie degli alunni della scuola superiore (G8-­‐G11) in cui verranno illustrati i vantaggi derivanti dal conseguimento del Diploma Program. Questa riunione è particolarmente importante per i genitori che devono prendere delle importanti decisioni per il futuro dei propri figli. La riunione si terrà il giorno 20 ottobre dalle 19 alle 20.30 presso la Assembly Hall è sarà coordinata dal nostro Diploma Program Coordinator, Sig. Ron Entwistle. Alla riunione saranno presenti anche gli insegnanti per rispondere alle vostre domande. VINCITRICE DELL’IB INTERNATIONAL ART AWARD Ci congratuliamo con Cecilia Clot, allieva della 10°, che ha vinto il primo premio nell’International Baccalaureate International Painting Contest. Il dipinto è stato realizzato lo scorso anno e potete vederlo sul sito della scuola. CONCORSO DI MATEMATICA NELLA SCUOLA MEDIA Siamo lieti di annunciare che l’IST sta organizzando per la prima volta (auspicando che si possa ripetere negli anni a venire) il “Middle School Math Competition” che si terrà presso la nostra scuola, Sabato, 12 novembre 2011 dalle 8.45 alle 12.30. L’IST ha invitato al concorso varie scuole della zona, pubbliche e private. Il Sig. John Mores con l’aiuto del Dipartimento di Matematica della scuola superiore si occupa di organizzare questo evento. La partecipazione dei nostri alunni è fondamentale per creare attitudine all’eccellenza, competizione, soddisfazione e divertimento nei confronti della matematica. Gli alunni affronteranno diverse prove, saranno premiati il primo, secondo e terzo posto nelle varie categorie individuali e a squadre, e tutti i partecipanti riceveranno un riconoscimento. HEADMASTER’S LIST AND HONOR ROLL Siamo lieti di annunciare che quest’anno verranno nuovamente istituiti la HEADMASTER’S LIST e l’HONOR ROLL che ultimamente non erano più stati compilati. Il metodo di valutazione si basa sui voti ricevuti durante il secondo semestre dell’anno scolastico passato. In allegato potete trovare i nominativi degli alunni che sono stati inseriti in tali liste durante il secondo semestre dell’anno scolastico 2010-­‐11. NUOVO SERVIZIO DI MENSA PER LA SCUOLA MATERNA Nel contesto di una revisione e di un miglioramento del nostro servizio di mensa, abbiamo introdotto una nuova modalità “family-­‐style” per i bambini della scuola materna che prevede che Il cibo venga portato e servito direttamente in tavola. Questo tipo di servizio è più agevole, evita di avere in tavola vassoi scomodi ed ingombranti per i piccoli e crea un ambiente più confortevole ed organizzato dove i bimbi possono consumare il loro pasto. Congratulazioni a tutte le insegnanti della scuola materna, a Mark Star, Lower School Deans e dal team “Good School Food” per questa idea a cui seguiranno altre iniziative di miglioramento del servizio di mensa. Come saprete, la nostra scuola è gestita da un Comitato Direttivo (anche chiamato Board) composto da 8 membri volontari che vengono eletti dai genitori che fanno parte dell’Associazione International School of Turin. PORTE APERTE ALLE NAZIONI UNITE Domenica 23 ottobre, presso il campus delle Nazioni Unite a Torino, si terrà una manifestazione di “porte aperte” per celebrare la data della nascita delle Nazioni Unite che ricorre il 24 ottobre. Tutti i membri della comunità scolastica dell’IST sono invitati a partecipare a questa manifestazione per conoscere meglio le attività delle Nazioni Unite a Torino attraverso le varie presentazioni che si terranno in tale occasione. PARENT TEACHER CONFERENCES Desideriamo ricordarvi di segnare sul vostro calendario le date dei colloqui con gli insegnanti che si terranno il 21, 22 e 23 novembre. E’ molto importante incontrare gli insegnanti per conoscere l’andamento scolastico dei vostri figli. PROGRAMMA DEGLI SPETTACOLI DEL 19 E 20 DICEMBRE Il giorno 19 dicembre dalle ore 11.10 alle 12.15 si terrà la “Winter Performance” per gli alunni delle classi 1° e 2° elementare, mentre Martedì 20 dicembre alla stessa ora sarà il turno delle 3° e 4° elementari. Maggiori informazioni inerenti al programma completo degli spettacoli saranno inviate a breve. VACANZE AUTUNNALI Non dimenticate che la settimana dal 31 ottobre al 4 novembre la scuola rimarrà chiusa per le vacanze d’autunnali del primo semestre.
