Main research interests
Galerkin–Legendre spectral methods. Accurate and efficient solvers for the solution of the
incompressible Navier–Stokes equations in simple geometries, based on Galerkin–Legendre spectral
approximations, have been developed in collaboration with F. Auteri and L. Quartapelle [T2]. In
order to minimize the sparsity of the resulting algebraic system [J15] and to account for different
types of boundary conditions [J12], ad-hoc bases for velocity and pressure were derived exploiting
the orthogonality properties of Jacobi polynomials. The well-posedness of the resulting discrete
problem based on a projection-type method was analyzed in terms of the discrete inf-sup condition
[J16]. The numerical solver, implemented in a Fortran90 code, has been successfully adopted for the
stability analysis of incompressible cavity flows [J13] and, coupled with the solution of the energy
equation (under the Boussinesq approximation), for the stability analysis of natural convection
flows [J14].
Finite-element level-set methods. To overcome the limitation of standard interface capturing
technique (such as the Volume of Fluid, VOF), usually related to the discontinuous nature of the
characteristic function representing the interface, a finite-element level-set method has been proposed for the simulation of two-fluid free-surface flows [T1, B5]. In order to extend the advantages
of the level-set method to a finite-element framework, in collaboration with E. Burman, we have
investigated two main issues of this approach, namely the stabilization of the pure advection levelset equation and the reinitialization of the distance function. In particular, we have introduced
and analyzed a new subgrid edge stabilization technique [T1, J9, R6] (with improved conservation
properties) and a new local projection reinitialization scheme for the level-set function [J7, R5] (for
which a rigorous convergence result was proven).
Mathematical models and numerical methods for naval applications. The research activity carried on during the partnership with the sailing Team Alinghi [P10, P15, P16] was focused on
the development and validation of a complete set of numerical tools for the design of sailing boats.
In collaboration with A. Quarteroni, D. Detomi and M. Lombardi, different fluid dynamic simulation of turbulent and (laminar-to-turbulent) transitional flows [T1, J10, C3, C5], the dynamics of
a boat advancing in calm and wavy seas [J8, C4], shape optimization [B2] and the fluid-structure
interaction (FSI) between wind and sails [C1, C2, B3]. The latter required the development of
suitable interpolation techniques to deal with the exchange of information through non-matching
interfaces [J2]. These numerical tools were realized combining software developed in-house with
both commercial and open-source codes and have been adopted by the Alinghi design team during three America’s Cup campaigns (2003, 2007 and 2010). Most of the numerical models were
finally organized in a parallel C++ software based on the OpenFOAM library, with the objective
of integrating the different models in a unified software platform [B3]. In a recent development,
carried on in collaboration with the master student A. Bartezzaghi, an hybrid CPU/GPU parallel
implementation of the FSI solver for sail simulations has been implemented in order to exploit the
computational power of Graphics Processing Units (GPU). In the framework of another industrial
partnership [P13], similar models were developed for the simulation of the dynamics of rowing
boats, where the strong effect of the rowers’ motion has to be accounted for in order to capture
correctly the boat performance. Thanks to the specific know-how maturated during this project, we
have recently activated, in collaboration with E. Miglio, a consulting activity for the International
Rowing Federation [P1].
Numerical methods for industrial multi-physics problems. In a sequence of industrial
projects [P3, P4, P5, P8] in collaboration with MOXOFF s.r.l. and TetraPak Packaging Solution
s.p.a., we have analyzed a complex multi-physics industrial process for the packaging of liquid food
2
and developed a set of numerical models for simulating the different physical phenomena involved.
To capture the characteristic features of the process, the numerical models included FSI capabilities
accounting for the interaction between the liquid and the package structure [R4] and geometrical
multi-scale coupling schemes between 3D, 1D and 0D sub-problems [R3]. All these models have
been implemented in a parallel C++ software based on the LifeV library and integrated in a control
framework based on the Modelica standard for investigating the interaction between the physical
processes and the complex control system governing the operating conditions of the packaging
line [R2]. Multi-physics problems have also been subject of other research activities regarding the
thermo-fluid dynamic simulation of datacenter [J3] (for the optimization of the energy consumption), the cell growth in shaking bioreactors [J5, J6] and the simulation of electro-hydrodynamic
(EHD) cooling devices, through the solution of a highly nonlinear PDE system coupling the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with electrostatic potential, charge continuity and heat transfer
equations [J1]. Optimization problems in different application fields have been investigated with
both gradient based [B2] and genetic [J3] approaches. In a recent work [R1] with M. Verani and
I. Fumagalli, we have analyzed a shape optimization problem based on a reference domain approach
proving convergence results for both the state variables and the control function.
Social role of Mathematics. In collaboration with M. Verani, we have started a research activity
(funded by grant [P2]) in the field of math education with the objective of creating innovative,
effective, verified and open-source teaching strategies for the prevention of gambling abuse. The
project investigate the role that the correct understanding of the mathematical concepts governing
the most popular games can play in the reduction of problem gambling [D1, D2].
