Research activity
Daniele Marchisio's research activity focuses on the development, validation and implementation of
computational methods for multiscale modeling, with a particular focus on turbulent multiphase
reacting systems. His early research interests focused on the treatment of very fast chemical
reactions through the so-called presumed Probability Density Function (PDF) approach and its
implementation in commercial Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) codes (e.g., Fluent). Both the
the Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes equation (RANS) and the Large Eddy Simulation (LES)
approaches have been used. More recently he has been interested in the description of the evolution
of multiphase systems through Population Balance Models (PBM). He developed, investigated and
validated an entire class of methods (Quadrature Method of Moments, QMOM; Direct Quadrature
Method of Moments, DQMOM; Conditional Quadrature Method of Moments, CQMOM) that are
now employed in commercial CFD codes (Fluent and TransAT), as well as open source codes (e.g.,
MFIX and openFoam). These methods have been also applied to the atomistic description of fluids,
by solving the Boltzmann equation. Lately the problem of coupling, following the multiscale
approach, different scales, namely fully atomistic and coarse-grained simulations (by using
GROMACS and IBIsCO) and mesoscale (Botlzmann equation) simulations and continuum
modeling (CFD), has been investigated and applied to different practical problems.
The uniqueness and the quality of his research activity are demonstrated by the number of
publications and their high citation index, and by the number of prestigious international
collaborations. As a result of these collaborations, Daniele Marchisio has applied these methods to,
and has actively investigated, several practical problems, such as:
 simulation of transport and deposition of colloidal particles in porous media (in
collaboration with Prof. Rajandrea Sethi, Politecnico di Torino)
 construction of “synthetic” porous media (for CFD simulation) with bullet physics and
application of homogeneization theory for simulation data interpretation (in collaboration
with Prof. Daniel Tartakovsky, Univ. of California San Diego - USA, and Frederic Augier,
Institute Francais du Petrol et Nouvelle Energie, Lyon, France)
 multiscale modeling of soft-matter by using fully atomistic and coarse-grained molecular
dynamics simulations, as well as continuum modeling (in collaboration of Dr. Paola
Carbone, Univ. of Manchester, UK)
 production of polymeric nano-particles for pharmaceutical applications (in collaboration
with Prof. Antonello Barresi, Politecnico di Torino, Dr. Barbara Stella, Univ. di Torino, and
Prof. Jordi Puigalli, UPC Barcellona);

Paolo Ponzo, Hermes Droghetti, 2015; Raffaele Calaminici, Alessandro Concas, 2016) and for the
following PhD projects:
 Liliana Rivautella (2004-2006); Title PhD thesis: "Precipitazione di micro- e nanoparticelle in reattori a getti collidenti confinati e a vortice" (in italian). In this PhD
project turbulent precipitation in special passive mixers, called Confined Impinging Jets
Reactor, is investigated. The main outcome of this work is a set of simple and reliable rules
for rector design and scale up for micro- and nano-particle synthesis.
 Federica Omegna (2005-2007); Title PhD thesis: "Strategies for controlling the particle
size distribution and scale up issues in the production of titanium dioxide via the sol-gel
route”. This work focuses on sol-gel processes and investigates the effect of mixing on a
particular process: titanium dioxide nano-particles synthesis from alkoxides. The
experimental and modelling results of this work show that mixing is very important and can
be used to control the final titanium dioxide particle size. Moreover it plays a crucial role
when up-scaling the process at the industrial level.
 Emmanuela Gavi (2006-2008); Title PhD thesis: "Investigation of turbulent precipitation
of nanoparticles in a Confined Impinging Jets Reactor". This PhD project, carried out in
collaboration with Iowa State University, focuses on the simulation of nano-particle
precipitation processes by resorting to Computational Fluid Dynamics modelling, both using
the so-called Reynold-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) and the Large Eddy Simulation
(LES) approaches, as well as by resorting to micro-Particle Image Velocimetry
measurements.
 Valeria Rasetto (2006-2008); Title PhD thesis: "Use of mathematical models in the freesedrying field: process understanding and optimal apparatus design". In this PhD project
a multi-scale modelling approach is used to simulate a laboratory and an industrial scale
freeze-drying chamber. The method is validated through comparison against experimental
data and the approach is then used to study design scale up issues.
 Federica Lince (2007-2009); Title PhD thesis: "Preparation and characterization of
polymeric nano-particles for pharmaceutical applications". This work investigates the
production of polymeric nano-particles for pharmaceutical applications through solvent
displacement. The PhD work uses a few case studies (i.e., poly-capro-lactone, polyethylene-glycol block co-polymer) to develop a methodology to control the final particle
size distribution and surface properties of the carrier, as well as strategies to transfer the
process at the industrial scale.
 Samir Bensaid (2007-2009); Title PhD thesis: "Tackling the fundamental challenges of
diesel soot and NOx removal". The aim of this PhD project is to develop a mathematical
model able to accurately describe the soot deposition process into Diesel Particulate Filters,
the consequent gradual modification of the properties of the filter itself (notably
permeability and porosity), the formation of a soot filtration cake and the final regeneration
of the filter (via soot combustion). The commercial computational fluid dynamics code
FLUENT was used to this end.


Danilo Carvajal (2008-2010); Title PhD thesis: “Simulation and modeling of production
processes for biofuels”. The aim of this PhD project is to build a mathematical model to be
used in the design and optimization of hydrolysis and fermentation processes for the
production of ethanol from agricultural wastes. The model is based on computational fluid
dynamics and most of the work focuses on the rheological investigation of the suspensions
involved in these processes. The project is carried out in collaboration with an industrial
partner (Mossi & Ghisolfi group) and is funded by the European Commission and the
Region of Piedmont.
Ilaria Valente (2009-2011); Title PhD thesis: “Polymeric nanocapsules for pharmaceutical
applications”. This PhD project focuses on the investigation of solvent displacement
processes for the production of nanocapsules for controlled drug delivery. The research work
focuses on the characterization of these nanocapsules and on the quantification of their
efficacy.
Matteo Icardi (2009-2011); Title PhD thesis: “Computational models for the simulation of
turbulent poly-dispersed flows: Large Eddy Simulation and Quadrature-based
Moment Methods”. This project is a collaboration with Ascomp Software GmbH. Within
this project the computational fluid dynamics code TransAT is used to simulate multiphase
turbulent reactive systems mainly with Large Eddy Simulation and the Quadrature Method
of Moments as well as the Direct Quadrature Method of Moments. Three case studies are
considered: nanoparticle precipitation in micro-reactors, particle-laden flows in turbulent
channels and solution of the homogeneous isotropic Boltzmann equation.
Antonio Buffo (2010-2012); Title PhD thesis: “Multivariate population balance for
turbulent gas-liquid flows”. This PhD project aims at the development of robust
approaches for the simulation of poly-disperse gas-liquid systems with mass transfer and
chemical reactions. After formulating and validating a new approach (the conditional
quadrature method of moments) is implemented in a commercial computational fluid
dynamic code (Fluent) as well as an open-source CFD code (openFOAM). The method is
eventually validated by comparison of model predictions against experiments performed
both in stirred tanks and bubble columns.
Nicodemo Di Pasquale (2010-2012); Title PhD thesis: “Multiscale simulation of polymer
nanoparticles precipitation for pharmaceutical applications”. This project aims at
investigating co-polymer self-assembly into nanocapsules/nanospheres/nanoparticles with
different tools, focusing in particular on full-atom/coarse-grained molecular dynamics,
population balances and computational fluid dynamics. The main outcome of this project is
the demonstration of the usefulness of the parameter passing technique (from full atom
molecular dynamics to coarse-grained molecular dynamics, population balance model and
finally to computational fluid dynamics) to simulate such a complex process.
Mauricio Coletto (2011-2014); Title PhD thesis: “CFD simulation of atmospheric freezedrying in fluidized beds for food applications”. This thesis aims at investigating from the
modeling and experimental point of views the process of atmospheric freeze-drying. The
development of the modeling approach involves the formulation of a simple drying model
and its implementation in a computational fluid dynamics code, where the fluidized
suspension is also simulated.
Gianluca Boccardo (2012-2014); title PhD thesis: “An in-silico open-source approach for
the investigation of multi-phase packed system: rigid body simulations and
Computational Fluid Dynamics”. Within the project the problem of “in-silico”
construction of porous media (and their subsequent simulation) is studied. Bullet physics
(via the code Blender) is used to create packing of objects (sand grains or catalytic particles)
and then computational fluid dynamics (via the opensource code openFOAM) is used to

simulate fluid flow and particle transport. In collaboration with the University of California
in San Diego, the homogenization theory is employed to interpret the results.
Francesca Messina (2012-2014); title PhD thesis: “Microscale simulation of micro and
nanoparticles transport in porous media for groundwater remediation”. This thesis
aims at developing more reliable models for describing collector efficiencies in porous
media for micro and nanoparticles. Most of the work is carried out with the code COMSOL
using both Eulerian and Lagragian approaches for tracking the evolution of the particles.
Jeremias De Bona (2014-2016); title PhD thesis: “Hierarchical modeling on turbulent
liquid-liquid dispersions”. Within this work different approaches for the simulation of
liquid-liquid dispersions are investigated, ranging from simple zero-dimensional models to
complex three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics models. The main aim is to
identify the best approach suitable for the simulation of liquid-liquid dispersions depending
on the operating conditions. Particular attention is devoted to reacting systems.
Eleonora Crevacore (2014-2016); title PhD thesis: “Three-dimensional micro-scale
simulations of particle transport within porous media”. This study aims to analyze
colloid transport in saturated porous media, under different physical-chemical conditions.
Starting from micro-scale simulations, an averaging technique is applied as a powerful tool
to extrapolate accurate macro-scale models, evaluating parameters such as dispersion and
deposition efficiency.
Luca Gemello (2015-2017); title PhD thesis: “Simulation of bubble columns under the
heterogeneous regimes with CFD and PBM”.
Alessio Lavino (2015-2017); title PhD thesis: “Simulation of macromolecule selfassembly with CFD and MD”.
Hermes Droghetti (2015-2017); title PhD thesis: “Multiscale modelling of complex with
DPD and CFD”.
