Over 200 dop/igp products With the addition of Igp Ricciarelli from Siena and Dop potatoes from Bologna, the number of typical Italian products awarded rises to 201, making Italy the absolute leader within the EU. 06/09 Video interviste Video Interviews Paco Nicodemo: come funziona l’import dei prodotti Made in Italy in UK. 03/08 cibus news Le aree dedicate introdotte in fiera nell’edizione 2010. Italian cheeses Not only is the exportation of cheese booming, but Italian products have registered an increase of 10% against French competitors and managed to take share away from the most wellknown products from France. Come commenta l’attuale congiuntura? E in particolare l’export? Italian food industry reacts better to crisis than other sectors Which is the significance for Italy of its food sector in light of economic trends and globalisation? The Italian food industry with its turnover of 120 billion euros ( 20 of which for export) represents the second-largest production sector, after engineering. This sector gives job to 400,000 workers within 6,500 companies. It should be underlined that our food & drink industry is the pride and joy of “Made in Italy” around the world. How do you comment the current economic situation? The Italian food industry has reacted more strongly than other industrial areas to the effects of the economic crisis during 2009. It is worth noting that, during a deeply critical year, the anti-cyclic nature of the sector was confirmed and the productive dynamic of the sector, after a drop of two figures at the start of the year, progressively reduced previous erosion. And focusing on export? Exportation in 2009 dropped by 3.6 on the previous year. So, also in this area trends have picked up compared to the negative signs displayed at the beginning of the year which fluctuated around the 7% mark. Here, again, sector trends accumulated a net advantage compared to the total for Italy which closed 2009 with a reduction of approximately -24% on the previous year. The food industry obtained this result thanks to certain export-oriented regions in Italy, such as Campania, Piedmont and Puglia. Food export for 2009 was heavily influenced by the significant drop in the North American market, -13.2% in the USA and -9.5% in Canada. This situation was added to by a less dramatic fall in the European markets, starting with the first release of national “food and drink”, Germany (-3.4%), and then France (-2.8%). da pag. Cibus as the driving force behind internationalisation www.gdoweek.it What is new at Cibus 2010 and why? Cibus is primarily an exhibition of new products. This year, however, there are some interesting new developments, beginning with a new award for 02 “Real Italian” food chosen by foreign retailers. This is followed by “Planet Nutrition”, devoted to medical food specialists, and areas focussing on catering and eating out. Outside the exhibition hall is Cibus in Città (Cibus in the City): Parma comes alive and presents food to consumers. What is the keyword this year? I would definitely say “Internationalisation”. Cibus 2010 will be the marketplace for all foreign buyers wishing to research and buy top quality Italian foodstuffs. The most important chain stores in Europe and from the retail world and organised catering have confirmed their participation. The slogan for Cibus 2010 is “Welcome to foodland”, it is no coincidence that the location is Parma as it represents the final part of a process combining tradition, culture and national industrial resources. Three good reasons for visiting Cibus? - A springboard for Italian companies trying to break into international markets. - An excellent showcase for leading companies from all food sectors. - A place where trends within the Italian food market are created, through both traditional and innovative channels. I can suggest a fourth reason, Parma has become a reference for food safety recognised on an international level by the L’effetto dell’inflazione sui prezzi dell’LCC Effect of inflation on retail prices 1. Food, particularly Italian food, is primarily a sensorial, synesthetic experience: there is no technological instrument that could take the place of the direct relationship that exists between the buyer and the product, the product simply has to be tasted and assessed on the spot. In an effort to ride this positive trend nearly all the important labels are strategically dividing their lines according to the target market. One of the most prominent trends is children’s food. Designed to capture the attention of the little consumers a supermarket’s brand is combined with a visual motif. In order to increase their brand equity, certain supermarkets have developed products which promote healthy eating, including contributions from scientific bodies expert in the field. The changes, however, are on the way. Soon, food industries, the fresh foods section, will be given the role of contract packers. By opening its doors to international buyers the Parma event is creating a new development line between prominent branded goods and typical products. Focus Areas: France, Japan and Southeast China One of the main objectives of Cibus 2010 is to forge new links between Italy and France in the name of a common emphasis on quality and tradition within food and agriculture. France, the second-largest market for national food and agricolture exportation, will witness the participation of a substantial group of buyers from the French large-scale retail trade within a specially-created area. There is also keen interest in Japan and Southeast China where scouting expeditions for the most important buyers have taken place in recent months. Obviously, the traditional focalisation on strategic markets for Italian foodstuffs, such as the US, Great Britain, Germany, Russia, the Benelux, Switzerland and the Balkans has not been overlooked. These regions still offer good opportunities for development for Italian indutries. Andare negli States Michael Carosello – The Food Emporium www.gdoweek.it Prodotti gourmet e premium. Retailer Karin Geiselhart Private Label Manager Balducci’s “Made in Italy” products is growing, particularly private labels. Products are chosen via direct selection, principally from among small and medium-sized companies –as well as visits to companies themselves– based on current trends, including health. Balducci’s is a boutique for speciality foodstuffs, with 6 shops in the USA. Karim Geiselhart, who always chooses the most highly-rated private labels, states that “Made in Italy” products are increasingly in vogue, particularly olive oil, panettone, as well as balsamic vinegar, prosciutto ham, pasta and olives. She finds products at food fairs and through special networks. Positive trade balance for italian cheese According to Istat data, in 2009 Italy exported 248,117 tons of cheese valued at 1.42 billion euros. Retail wants to listen to the customer more Retail which wants to make a fresh start, be more “intelligent” and feel the winds of change is closer to its customers and able to simultaneously adapt to changes in purchasing behaviour and consumerism. These are just some of the strong signals –together with the emphasis on leadership and on sustainability- which characterised the 2010 edition of the Big Show in New York, the National Retail Federation convention. The need may have arisen from many retailers’ inability to visualise new ways of interacting with consumers apart from the well-worn path of focus on prices, promotional offers and, for some, private labels. The most prominent technologies were: new interactive technology increasingly used by retailers to provide their customers with a distinctive buying experience; self-checkout which transforms the shopping experience by saving time and creating a sense of independence when managing the shopping process ; Digital Signage is developing increasingly sophisticated forms of interaction, including holography. Via Italia, the flavours of Italy according to Casinò From the experience gained through the acquisition of the Italian chain Casitalia, Casino has developed a new format, specialising in Italian flavours: Via Italia, 150 m² of Italian products, displayed in a suitable setting. Food trays&containers: sustainability is the new must-have Different food sections use containers which vary in composition and performance. Expanded polystyrene (EPS) are now a valid alternative has been found in trays made from expanded biopolymer foam, largely made from starch or polylactic acid. This particular innovation offers clear advantages in terms of eco-compatibility. Good results from polyethylene terephthalate (PET), too, particularly for fruit and vegetables and food stuffs thanks to its excellent visual properties. Perhaps the most anticipated innovation though is the rigid thermoformed tray, made from mechanically recycled plastic material, in particular RPET. In Italy it is still against the law to use recycled material in direct contact with food. However, primary packaging made from RPET is permitted, provided a layer of food-grade virgin material is used to create a protective barrier. ”We look at the product in terms of ingredients to see that it meets the requirements of this market and make suggestions that might help the sale or positioning in this market. We look at the packaging to see if it is in English and if it is adapted for the marketplace, both legally and for the FDA in terms of the nutrition requirements and the UPC bar code. We look for products that have a tradition in Italy and a story. We choose products that might be interesting to consumers in the US and are known for quality and for authenticity. That is paramount. We’ve been in the business so long that often companies come to us. It is a very nice position to be in.” ”Food House deals with the import of Made in Italy products and serves mainly the catering industry. The company focuses on established businesses rather than new ventures. Guidelines for the innovative scenario of Cibus From analysis of the markets which in 2009 were characterised by higher growth-rates within italian large-scale retail trade, four value-development frameworks have emerged: Hearth, Comfort, Time and Wellbeing. Hearth refers to the reassuring feeling of gathering around the family hearth with loved ones. Comfort refers to everything that enhances the pleasure of being at home, living: aromas, shapes, cleanliness, sounds. The third framework is Time, saving time in terms of both the amount of work produced and the creative effort one invests. The final framework is Wellbeing which refers to the individual in the strictest sense and the act of caring for oneself. Analysis has revealed that Hearth, Time and Wellbeing have a 90% connection to innovation concerning food and beverages. Therefore, broadly speaking, these are the values that will characterise the innovative scenario of Cibus. www.gdoweek.it Opinion Maker 08 Girolamo Panzetta Girolamo Panzetta (1962) è una celebrità per il pubblico giapponese che lo conosce da oltre vent’anni. Girolamo Panzetta (1962) is a celebrity in Japan where he arrived more than 20 years ago. He is known on Japanese TV and in fashion magazines as an opinion leader. “Food made in Italy means first of all pasta, bread, olive oil, wine, cheese and ham. It is not difficult to find good quality among Italian products, what lacks is information. Producers have the erroneous idea that, since their products are the best they must be successful. However, a product works especially if there is something to tell about it and if there is a communication campaign that supports it. Italy has a very good reputation, thanks also to Italian lifestyle, fashion and design - all tools that should be used much more widely to support the food industry. As for marketing and the ability to work as a team, French people are better than us.” “Conad looks for the real essence of Italy in an Italian product and not just a flag or folklore. With Leclerc we have created Vive l’Italie, which will place real Italian products with French points of sale, not only the most wellknown foodstuffs but also the smaller specialities. In Giappone, patria dell’alta qualità, c’è ancora spazio per altri prodotti. Many other products can still find room in Japan, country of high quality. First step I suggest is come here, take a look around and understand: you can’t expect to sell from Italy. We should improve on our way to become a ‘system’, and maybe learning something from the French. Should I give you an example? You can often find French wines sold in an Italian restaurant, in order to embellish its menu. The opposite is difficult, if not impossible, to happen.”
