Liverpool Most people associate Liverpool with the Beatles and football but the city has a lot more to offer. Liverpool has some magnificent architecture, especially on the river. The city was once a busy, international port but there is very little commercial shipping today. However, you can still travel on the famous Mersey Ferry, which sails - Mock exam-CA 3 June 2007- -PoliticalScience Mock Exam- across the River Mersey. Along the river, you can find The Merseyside Maritime Museum which recounts Liverpool's maritime history. The museum shows how Liverpool was once the gateway to the world; 9 million people left Liverpool, between 1830 and 1930, to start new lives in America, Canada and Australia. You can learn, too, the terrible and unforgettable story of the millions of slaves who passed through Liverpool, in very cruel conditions, on their way to America. Liverpool is one of the few cities in the world to have two cathedrals. Liverpool Cathedral is the largest Anglican cathedral in the world. There is a Catholic cathedral, too. Ironically, the Protestant cathedral was built by a Catholic architect and the Catholic cathedral was built by a Protestant architect. Of course, if none of these places interests you, you can always go on The Beatles Tour and visit the places where the famous Fabulous Four played and lived. After that, you can go to Anfield and visit the Liverpool Football Club museum and take a tour of the famous football ground. 17) The city of Liverpool was a very important international port in the past.
