Tempra is a challenger in a market segment currently dominated by the Vauxhall Cavalier and Ford Sierra. Against the best of the competition, Fiat claims that Tern· pra offers class-leading aerodyna· mics, unmatched corrosion protec· tion, high levels of ride comfort, comprehensive standard equipment and impressive use of interior space. With the introduction of Tempra, Fiat now aim to be a genuine contender in every major segment of the UK market. The new Tempra became available from Fiat's UK dealer network on September 1, in six versions embracing five engine sizes; 1400cc, 1600cc and fuel injected 1800cc petrol, along with two 1.9 litre diesel engines, one of which is turbocharged. There will be three levels of trim: standard, SX and SXie. ,, , , " , , . , \ Built at the Cassino plant near Rome, one of the most automated and advanced car factories in the world, Fiat claims that Tempra continues its advances in quality and reliability. The plant contains advanced robot welding stations, laser checking eqUipment, TV cameras for automatic visual checks, self-propelled trolleys and state-of·the·art automatic corn· ponent assembly devices. The robot stations at Cassino do not merely control and assemble car components; they also monitor chemical parameters of bodyshell bonding, paint bodyshells inside and out, measure geometric fit to exceptionally fine tolerances, assemble complex parts such as the fascia, and carry out repetitive tasks such as fitting of sound· proofing and interior roof linings. Novembre 90~ __ c luiglPenna The new Tempra continues Fiat's determination to provide some of the best and most advanced cor· rosion protection measures to be found at any level in the industry. Thus, all external steel exposed to the atmosphere is '!jalvanised, and this galvanisation is dOuble.sided for the most potentially vulnerable areas, such as bonnet, roof, wings, doorS and boot. Overall, more than 70% of the bodyshell is galvan· ised, and this comprehensive treat· ment is backed up by the use of synthetic material protecting the galvanised wheel ar'sches, exten· sive wax and PVC treatment, ventilated box sections and special structural sealing adhesives. With its emphasis piaced on the legal an(j forensic investigation of the crime, it also provides an interesting insight into the American legal system and court procedures. Greta Scacchi's role as thrusting attomey is well played and is one of the most attractive corpses on film. Harrison Ford is good, as usual, in a role calling for his earnest intensity, but what a funny hairstyle. His pacing from the very opening tells you this is a well thought- out performance. His speed for Alflo Is taken faster than in other sets I've heard and gives a feel of urgency which makes you think yes, Alfio is in a hurry to get back to the woman he loves (although she has been un· faithful to him with Turiddu). Also Sinopoli brings out all the beauty of the great "Inneggiamo Signor", the Easter hymn. The programme is rapidly being translated into Italian, too. The first thirty titles are already available in Italy and in the U.K. This is of importance not only so that Italian children can discover that learning is child's play, but for children learning Italian or EngliSh as a second language, possibly using both editions together. All the books below are illustrated throughout in full colour. Traditional: Of the thirty titles published by Child's Play in Italian, only 11 Gatto Indipendente, could be described as "traditional". After two home Internationals, England remain undefeated and more importantly have secured two points against Poland in their campaign for a place In the 1992European Nation Cup Finals. That is undoubtedly a valid comment but seems to be much more a reflection on the fact that England sides are still trying to get used to playing with the sweeper system than a reason for breaking up what is clearly an outstanding combination. On the face of it, all Is sweetness and iight between the press and the England Manager, Mr. Graham Taylor. Nevertheless, I do just detect one or two murmurs of discontent. He has not surrounded himself on the b~nch with colleagues of international experience. It was felt that this was demonstrated by the initial selection of Bull and then' his substitution early in the second half by Waddle at the same time as an injured Uneker was replaced by Bardsley. The fact that Beardsley then scored an opportunist last minute goal was thought by many to be justification for their view that the Uverpool player, who has had an outstanding season to date, should have started the match. ,... :, -, .;.,- . -'. . - Bull-tay/ormade IOrEng/and? Sadly Barnes remains anonymous out on the left wing in spite of being reunited with his former Watford mentor and Manager. Whilst Bull may be suited for the next 'match against the Republic of Ireland, unless he does demonstrate an ability to adapt to the international game, his place up front may well have to go to another striker and my preferred choice would be Southampton's Matthew Le Tisier. I have also seen the view expressed that lf England play a sweeper system, they are wasting their attacking options by selecting additional full backs. Instead, they should pick mid-field players who have some defensive ability and who may be able to distribute the ball rather better than merely hitting speculative crosses into the box which tends to be the prefer. red option of Oixon and Pearce. After all, some managers have paid extravagant sums of money for mid-field players only then to expect them to play as traditional full backs (witness Paul Ince at Manchester United). The Arsenal double winning side had two converts in' Frank McUntock from·mid field to defence and Peter Storey from full back to mid·field. So why not pick genuine right and left footed mid·field players to perform alonside Wright, Walker and Par· ker and Increase the tactical options. One final word, I have in the past been critical of the authorities who run our game and so it Is with some pleasure that I can announce my wholeheaned support for the excellent proposals of the Football League In their document entitled "One Game, One Team, One Voice". It is a long overdue proposal that the Football Association and Football League should get together to run the game. My only comment about the proposed committee of twelve (six each •from the Association and League) is that, like many others, I think there should also be a representative from the Professional Footballers' Association. So where is the Italian connection? It is not a FIAT, Alfa Romeo or Lancia In fact, the connection is in the name TAR-OX - not very Italian sounding eitherl But TAR·OX is definitely Italian: it Italian Braking Power produces a line of high performance braking systems. TAR-OX's U.K agent are GGB (Engineering Spares) Ltd., a business owned and run by members of our Italian Community. GGB is .sponsoring Rob Gravett's Sierra in its assault on the 1990 Championship: other sponsors are Ford Credit, Yokohama Tyres and Shell Oil. So far Gravett has shown GGB's faith in him not to be misplaced, as he is currently on course to take the championship. , The TAR·OX range of radially grooved discs and pads are dimensionally identical to their original equipment counterparts making better braking a simple bolt·on job. The TAR·OX package provides greater resistance to fade and improved pedal sensitivity. Components are available to suit most European marques (including of course FIAT, Alfa Romeo and Lancia!). __ .
