The Novel Of Shanghai

website, 49 graven wood laths
The Novel of Shanghai is a relational project which is specific to the city of Shanghai.
A media campaign which involves the citizens, and all the individuals who every day
cross the Chinese megalopolis, will ask all of them to send a word which represents the
essence of the city or which talks about each person’s way of travelling through it. The
choice of asking each person for a “word” poses the problem of the profound
differences between the European and Chinese cultures, and through this double
exploration of the city and the Chinese language, not composed of words as the father
of modern Chinese linguistics, Yuan-Ren Chao, maintained, it proposes a meeting
point and an area of exchange in the novel. The central heart of the work is the Chinese
language as a powerful unifying element within linguistic fragmentation, and as an
iconic system of language. Written Chinese has the characteristic of being the
representation of the meaning of spoken words, and it refers, in the structure of the zi,
the semantic representations of phonic forms, to cognitive elements. Chinese writing
and its relationship to language as a cognitive and representative system is analogous
to art intended not as representation but as a direct relationship between the experience
of things and the communication of such an experience. The words collected in this
way, emblems of this iconic relationship, will in a first phase be accumulated
according to the chronological order in which they are received and will make up the
work as a collection of individual and collective experiences

Designed for an exhibition in the historic center of Salerno, this work of art reflects on
the meaning of an operation in a center to recover. The quote from German philosopher
Theodor W. Adorno is an incentive to think it not as a simple operation of structural
recovery, but as the reconstruction of the lost social group.

The space is occupied by a series of 9 boards on which we find the same number of
weapons exhibited, reproduced in papier-maché. Among these we find a grenade, a
P-38, a Carcano 91 rifle, all weapons used during some episodes of the Resistance
which involved the neighbourhood of Ponticelli in Naples. Accompanying the installation, nine audio recordings will, in a fragmentary way, activating at the approach of the
spectator to the individual boards, reproduce some interviews with those who played a
leading role in the events in question; interviews which form part of an archive which
reconstructs some events of the war which took place in the eastern area of Naples and
from which the information regarding the types of arms used were gathered, together
with the circumstances and the mood of those same leading figures. The papier-maché
with which the weapons were made was obtained by using the pages of the Italian Constitution.

Made for the exhibition “Impresa da Talenti”, operation of synergy between some
companies in the service industry and young artists, the work reflects on the idea of
design. The drawing board, archetype instrument of architect, presented as a 3D draw,
it is proposed that the experience of the same design, just as the idea of urbanism is not
limited solely to the definition of space or architectural structures, but refers to the
experience of living places. On the table that’s the plan of the refinery in Naples, the
east side of the city, an unsolved case of reconversion of an industrial area in which in
addition to structures that’s the civil society to reconsider too.

Twenty rifles, exact copies of muskets used by partisans during the resistance war
against the nazi-fascist army, are made of paper mache using the pages of the Italian
Constitution and arranged neatly on two racks.

Taking a cue from the famous work of Joseph Kossuth One and Three Chairs this work
aims to find a possible fourth mode of definition of the chair: the mode of drawing.

The idea behind this work is to underline the design of the Altar, an element that usually
one can only see as an architecture, a sculpture. Through this action I reduce the altar
corporeality at its own simple design.

sound installation, metal sensor, sequencer, mp3 players,
loudspeakers
In this work the people was invited to throw a coin, after expressing a wish, into the
well. Inside the well there was a sensor which activated the sound after the coin was
trown. Through the loudspeakers one could listen to the voice of each worker reading
his letter of discharge. The work was conceived after reading Balzac's “The Human
Comedy” because i think in this age the unemployed workers could be perfect characters
for a Balzac’s book.

The eagle, the emblem of power and dominion which traverses the whole of history,
from the Roman empire to Saladin, from the Habsburg and Tsarist empires to the
totalitarian regimes, is inverted in its significance in Mancini’s installation, an intervention
that extends into Alighiero&Boetti’s exhibit on the third floor of the museum, presenting
a metaphorical excursus that takes its cue from Boetti’s singular attitude and links his
research into otherness to the theoretical setting of the Project Room. Mancini presents
a bitter reflection on neocolonialism, the subtle Eurocentric influence of a less obvious
domination than military intervention but one that is equally deleterious.

7 audioguides tracks
Designed to be installed in the exhibition "Alighiero & Boetti", a retrospective of the
great Italian artist at the MADRE Museum of Naples, the work of art proposes seven
tracks in the audioguide of the exhibition. In the tracks are narrated the colonial story
of the countries that Boetti visited and where he worked. The route begins with the
definition of colonialism, combined with the large map of the world, among the best
known works of Boetti and ends with the definition of neo-colonialism, combined with
the work "Untitled" by Mancini, installed in the same period in the Project Room for
the exhibition Transit 1.
