Black Flag Revival presents: BLACK FLAG REVIEW IN CONCERT A project by Ryts Monet Sunday December 2nd at 6.00 pm galleria upp | Giudecca 282 30133 Venezia | t. +39 328 4643887 | [email protected] | www.galleriaupp.com Black Flag Revival is an art project presented by Ryts Monet, artist in residence at Bevilacqua La Masa Foundation in Venice. Started in 2010, the work is now in progress and will be concluded and displayed in February 2013 for the collective exhibition at the end of the residency. The background of Ryts Monet, halfway between art and graphic design, has led him to examine the graphics of Raymond Pettibon ( 1957-), American artist, author of the Black Flag’s logo, posters and album covers. The band, pioneer of the hardcore punk genre, was founded in 1978 in California by Greg Ginn, Pettibon’s brother and guitarist of the band. The public appearances of Black Flag were distinguished by their ability to empathetically involve the public and stimulate reactions of anger and subversion against the establishment, and denouncing, through their songs, the so-called “American dream”. These contents were anticipated and nourished by the visual and iconographic imaginary created by Raymond Pettibon for the band, starting with the logo: four vertical black bars that on the one hand represented the power of the pistons of an internal combustion engine, on the other hand symbolized a black flag waved by the wind, icon of the anarchist movement. Even if Anarchy was intended to be as an opposition to every form of the established power, its concept has often been misunderstood and associated with the idea of sheer chaos and disorder. Considering the graphic production of Pettibon as a visual translation of the texts of the band, Ryts Monet noticed strong similarities between those images and photographs showing current events that took place this year in Veneto. Along his research in the local newspapers and libraries, Ryts Monet found issues closely related to the visual repertoire created by Raymond Pettibon that portrayed the themes of Black Flag’s songs such as carnage, bloody knives, murder and suicide. The year 2012 has seen a high number of suicides among businessmen in Veneto, a phenomenon linked to the current economic crisis, and like all great social transformations, is responsible for a loss of stability. In particular this area, enriched in the last decades, has dramatically experienced these changes. In order to treat the whole issue in a more organic way, the artist has therefore documented the phenomenon through a series of photographs of suicidal businessmen’s houses. The artist aims to lead the audience to question the causes and consequences of these excessive manifestations of social disease, with the intention of raising forms of reaction and critique similar to those provoked by Black Flag’s music. Through his project, which could be placed within the “revivalist” current typical of recent years, Ryts Monet tries to revive the excess and the rebellion characteristic of hardcore-punk and of Black Flag in particular, inviting, with the help of Enrico Stocco several bands from Veneto and its surroundings to play a series of concerts in Venice. The last date, at the Galleria Upp in Venice, consists in the exhibition of the tribute band Black Flag Review founded by the artist with the collaboration of the musicians Andrea Carpené, Enrico Stocco and Corrado Linzi. Their performance is conceived as a sort of theatrical mise-enscène, where the musicians dress the part of someone else, in this case of the Black Flag, going along with the wishes of the audience that seek an experience very close to being at the original band’s live. The video, audio, and photographic documentation produced during the performance at the Galleria Upp, will be shown in February 2013 in the exhibition at the end of the residency at Bevilacqua La Masa, where the artist will present also a vinyl with six covers played by the Black Flag Review (a song from each album produced by the Black Flag from 1981 to 1985) that will be recorded on December 2nd during the live performance at Galleria Upp. The cover and the packaging of the vinyl will be created by Ryts Monet himself. The final work will also include the series of photographs portraying the houses of the suicide entrepreneurs. What connects the various moments of the artist’s research is the will of creating a double sense of empathy: in music, between the audience and the band, as well as between all the members of the band, and in images, between the public and the photographic work analysing the phenomenon of the businessmen’s suicides. In order to increase the sense of empathic belonging to the project, from the organization to the research of the documents, every step of the work has been shared on the blog blackflag.rv (blackflagrevival.noblogs.org), created by Ryts Monet.
