Not long after the Russian entered Bucharest, a group of Russian soldiers suddenly
entered our yard announcing that they had come to arrest a war criminal living
there. My wife did not open the door; she only said that no war criminal lived
there, that this was the house of a rabbi. They replied angrily that they had been
sent to arrest a war criminal that lived there. Meanwhile some other Russian
soldiers arrived, and they surrounded the house. [...] Meanwhile, the Russian
soldiers became more and more obstinate; they were shouting and threatening.
They shouted that they would not leave the place until they had arrested the
war criminal they had come for. My wife suddenly came up with a brilliant idea:
she called a Russian Jewish woman, Nadia, and told her that a serious situation
had developed at our place and asked her to come over urgently. Nadia came
immediately and, much to her surprise, found the yard filled with Russian soldiers
and the house completely surrounded. Nadia bravely addressed the soldiers and,
talking with kindness, explained to them that a rabbi lived in the house and
therefore could not be a war criminal. He was a Jew, she told them, and the Jews
had suffered terribly under the German rule during the war. A miracle happened,
and the Russian in the yard and around the house pulled out. But this was a
frightening indication of the state of uncertainty, lack of safety and arbitrary rule
thet now existed, as well as the incapacity of the state authorities in charge of the
citizens’ peace and safety to perform their duty.
