DOCUMENTARY IN EUROPE AND ESoDoc For the second time, Documentary In Europe and ESoDoc join their forces and organize together their respective events. Last year this successful collaboration led to new business relationships, fruitful exchanges of experiences and know-how between professionals from more than 15 European countries. In 2013 the crisis reached its peak. There are less fundings for culture and film production, less funding to support events like Documentary In Europe or ESoDoc, less support for the documentary sector in general, unemployment and “studies on poverty” among documentary professionals, as the one recently promoted by the German Documentary Association AG DOK. In front of the problems in a declining market, events such as Documentary In Europe and ESoDoc might appear inappropriate, or even anachronistic, because they bet on opportunities and productions which are now decreasing. But in fact, it is exactly during the times of crisis, that training are fundamental for those who work in the sector. Thinking about ZeLIG's graduates, who where trained for three years in documentary, the crisis is still not visible. I was worried for the new graduates who finished the school in June 2013, I was afraid that they could not find a job. But, on the contrary, most of them were immediately employed in the audiovisual market. Actually 90% of ZeLIG's graduates is actively working in the documentary film sector. Let's think also about the choice of Finance Department of the Province of Bolzano (Business Location South Tyrol-BLS), who decided to invest in the filmmaking industry with an economic territorial effect of 150%. In order to meet the required standard, production companies can not just hire unskilled labour, but need workers with specific skills. We can analyse this also from a different point of view: the investment in the audiovisual industry was possible also because there was a film school which could grant skilled labour. For this reason it is essential to invest in learning and training, in order to guarantee highly skilled professionals in the audiovisual sector. This is why events such as Documentary In Europe and ESoDoc – supported by MEDIA Programme – are extremely important. We would like to thank the team of Documentary In Europe, who helped us so much to organize the event and let professionals from all over Europe meet and share their experiences and projects. Heidi Gronauer Director of ZeLIG School for Documentary, television and new media Head of Project of ESoDoc – European Social Documentary DOCUMENTARY IN EUROPE AND ESoDoc Per la seconda volta Documentary in Europe e ESoDoc uniscono le forze e organizzano assieme i loro eventi. Heidi Gronauer Director of ZeLIG School for Documentary, television and new media Head of Project of ESoDoc – European Social Documentary DOCUMENTARY IN EUROPE n. 17 Documentary in Europe has been successfully running for 16 years: our event has fostered the establishment of the Italian documentary maker's association, it has brought many Italian production companies into the European market and has helped many talents (coming from all over the world) in developing their projects, finding a suitable producer and launching their project in Europe. Our most recent success is the 2013 Oscar winning SEARCHING FOR SUGAR MAN, that was pitched at our event in 2008. It was in Bardonecchia that the filmmaker understood the potential of his project. Italy is in a very difficult recession and our institutions, which have financed us with continuity all through these years, do not have the resources to continue supporting us, at least for the moment. So, in times of difficulties, we must find the strength and stamina to respond with ideas and creativity. Since the 16th edition we have linked up with ESoDoc and are hosting their third and final session in our mountain retreat. So, there will be the ESoDoc pitch and case studies with Flora Gregory (Al Jazeera UK), Mick Czáky (Antelope)e Martin Atkin (GreenTV). The film FINDING FAMILY, which was pitched here last year, will be the opening film after its success at the recent Sarajevo Film Festival. With ESoDoc we are also organizing a session on film-market strategies and an international coproduction and distribution session. Together with our own invention, the MATCH MAKING session, we have a new session called MAKING A DIFFERENCE. Here initiatives coming from all over the world will tell us why and how they are making a difference. Have you ever heard of GOOD PITCH, WHEN EAST MEETS WEST, EDN ON-LINE PITCH, DOC LOUNGE, DOC HEADS and the American POV HACKATHON LAB? Time to understand how they can be of help for us. Another session is called WHAT ITALY HAS TO OFFER with the Film Commissions from Sardegna, Sicily, Valle d’Aosta and Piemonte together with a presentation of the ITALIAN DOC SCREENINGS, FESTIVAL DEI POPOLI INDUSTRY. There will also be the presentation of the new ZELIG SCHOOL FOR DOCUMENTARY, TELEVISION AND NEW MEDIA programme and 2014 ESoDoc. We are very pleased to say that all the films we are screening were pitched in Bardonecchia (and take a look at the co-production countries!): THE BELLA VISTA (Uruguay-Germany); La VALLE DELLO JATO (Italy-UK); UNPLUGGED (Serbia- Finland). Their directors, producers or distributors will be attending. All this will be done at a very low cost, with the volunteer work of our board and without any paper (that’s why you are reading this on your digital device). Our aim has always been to put into practise all the possible ways of helping young filmmakers and producers find their way into the international documentary landscape. By the way, this year the event is free of charge: when times are tough, we play it rough! STEFANO TEALDI Pres. Avete sentito parlare di GOOD PITCH, WHEN EAST MEETS WEST, EDN ONLINE PITCH, DOC LOUNGE, DOC HEADS and the american POV HACKATHON LAB? Un'ultima cosa, quest'anno l'evento sarà gratuito: when times are tough, we play it rough! STEFANO TEALDI Pres. OH! Films, 56 min., 2013 presentato a Documentary in Europe 2012 Born with water on the brain, abandoned at birth and given just month to live, Serbian born Oggi Tomic did not get the best start in life. Twenty seven years on however against the odds and through the kindness of strangers, he is alive and well and living happily married in the UK. After a childhood plagued by near starvation, shelling and continuous suffering it seems like everything is finally falling into place until one day he receives a phone call. His long lost family has tracked him down. It’s the moment every orphan waits their entire life for. There’s just one thing. Oggi was born a Serb but brought up a Bosnian. It turns out the family he has waited his entire life to hear from are in fact his natural born enemies, Serbs – the same ‘Men in the Hills’ who shelled and sniped at him during the 1300 day siege that began 20 years ago…. SEPTEMBER, 12 H 9.30 – 13.30, PALAZZO DELLE FESTE MATCH MAKING SESSION A good documentary film is (nearly) always based on a well developed project. Feedback from experienced directors, producers and commissioning editors can be critical in making a good documentary idea turn into an exceptional documentary project, ready for presentation to international financiers. Aimed at creating a common language between filmmakers and producers, the Match Making session gives authors and directors the opportunity to introduce themselves to the production world and test their ideas on expert European producers. And maybe find the partner needed. 12 projects have been selected for this year: Un buon film documentario si basa (quasi) sempre su un progetto ben sviluppato. 12 i progetti che saranno presentati al Match making di quest'anno: #backtogurun - Back to Gurun, Gregorian Adrineh, Armenia #childrensparliaments - Children's Parliaments, Aggarwal Sudhir, Germany #devilscometokoko - Devil comes to Koko, Alfie Nze and Gabriella Pedranti, Italy #habeascorpus - Habeas Corpus, Paolo Borraccetti, Italy #iknowwherethemoneyis - I know where the money is Mum, Arturo Cisneros, Spain #ladydrivers - Lady Drivers, Tretinjak Alina, Austria #lidodoc - Lido - Luca Gennari, Italy #linguamadre - Lingua Madre (Mother Tongue), Laura Plebani, Italy #rustamcasanova - The many lives of Rustam Casanova, Lorenzo Cioffi, Italy #warandmusic - War and Afghanistan Music, Rastgar Fardad, Iran #thewatergenie - The Water Genie, Claudio Capanna, Belgium #whiteelk - White Elk, Giuseppe Leonetti, Italy Tell what YOU think about the projects selected. Habeas Corpus, Paolo Borraccetti, Italy “Habeas corpus” is a film about the life odyssey of Emilio Marchi. A former Argentine self-made businessman of Italian descent, Emilio was illegally arrested by the military in 1975, ended up being a desaparecido for two months and endured 19 months of prison and torture, until he was exiled for seven years in Italy. Upon the re-establishment of democracy, he returned to Argentina where he founded the NGO "Jardin de los ninos". I know where the money is Mum, Arturo Cisneros, Spain Whenever a mother asks, there is an obligation to look for an answer, whatever it takes… Spurred by the economic crisis, with no job, with no projects in sight and unable to afford the due payments on my mortgage, I leave my house in the city and go back to the village where I was born, to my octogenarian parents’ home. My mother does not understand what is happening and is looking for answers that I must find, even if I need to tramp half of the world. Lady Drivers, Tretinjak Alina, Austria In a slum area in Chennai in South India, a group of women are taking driving lessons in order to become auto-rickshaw drivers. Their new profession changes not only their lives. One of these Lady Drivers is Murgamal, a widow with four children who wants to get financially independent. The people she meets while driving through Chennai depict the difficult change of women’s role in the Indian and global society. Lido, Luca Gennari, Italy Built from scratch in the mid-60s and almost entirely erected in the following 15 years, how can a building experiment designed for Ravenna and mass tourism become the distorted mirror of Italy’s history and yet the lab to envision the future of Europe? Today Lido Adriano, a sea resort where more than 50 languages are spoken, is by population the largest community in Ravenna’s area. Lingua Madre, Laura Plebani, Italy Lingua Madre is a journey towards my Polish origins, to the memories held in the letters my mother and my grandma shared between Italy and Poland in the early ’80. The many lives of Rustam Casanova, Lorenzo Cioffi, Italy Rustam Duloev, also known as “Casanova” but sometimes simply called “Sergio”, has an athletic physique, a faraway gaze and something of a nineteenth century romantic air. He is a larger than life character with a thousand faces and he constantly travels between different continents, without a fixed abode or bank account. Sometimes a gigolo, sometimes a father and a family man, he considers himself an artist above all else. War and Afghanistan Music, Rastgar Fardad, Iran War always has had a big influence on culture and cultural phenomenon. Music is one of these cultural phenomenons reflecting the events in a society, it is an art which influences and is influenced. Afghanistan as a country that has experienced different wars has it’s own special music. Studying the Afghan great music master's lives is an attempt that can show the adventure of the Afghan music during the war time. The Water Genie, Claudio Capanna, Belgium This feature-length documentary will follow the journey of a premature baby from his birth to his discharge from the neonatal unit and depict the daily life of this strange, silent and usually impenetrable space through what we can imagine his unfinished senses and mind perceive – a unique angle which will allow for a thoroughly visual exploration of the cinematic language. White Elk, Giuseppe Leonetti, Italy The journey of Edgar Laplante accross Italy is the occasion to analyze the relationship between people and power, between masses and leaders. The story of the Prince White Elk, the swindler who cheated the Fascists and Mussolini himself, let us see Italy’s pending past - the fascism - through a new and innovative perspective. The perspective of a man who wears indian full regalia while giving the roman salute. H 14.30 – 17.00, PALAZZO DELLE FESTE MAKING A DIFFERENCE We know that we are not the only ones facing difficult times. Many others around the world are finding it tough to develop, produce and distribute their work and instead of giving up, they have taken on the challenge, inventing small and big actions that are changing the life of documentary makers. In this inspirational session we will hear directly from the founders and organizers of GOOD PITCH, DOCSHOP, WHEN EAST MEETS WEST, EDN ON-LINE PITCH, the American POV HACKATHON LAB, DOC HEADS and DOC LOUNGE, what triggered their initiative and how they have made it come true. These are all new concepts and surprising ways of financing, showing and even making docs that have recently been developed. They will show us some results and explain how we could make good use of their experience We have decided to title the session MAKING A DIFFERENCE! hinting to the main aims of all these actions: help in a very concrete and participative way documentary filmmakers and their films! We believe that the mere fact of sharing their experience with us will help us understand how we can develop our own strategies and make them work. We are convinced that sharing these ‘projects’ will lead all of us to a better understanding of the different possibilities and make the documentary community stronger. The session is promoted and co-organized with EDN and we hope this first ‘summit’ can bring to a continuous promotion of these initiatives, developing them further and multiplying initiatives around the world. Tell what YOU think about the session. Send us your comments via TWITTER! #docineurope + initiative hashtag #goodpitch - GOODPITCH - Beadie Finzi, UK Good Pitch brings together filmmakers with NGOs, foundations, philanthropists, brands and media around leading social issues – to forge coalitions and campaigns that are good for all these partners, good for the films and good for society. - See more at: http://britdoc.org/real_good/pitch#sthash.z4Nq6Itv.dpuf #wemw - WHEN EAST MEETS WEST – Alessandro Gropplero, Italy WEMW is a co-production forum which every year brings together film professionals from Eastern Europe, Italy and one selected Western European region (a different one every year). The 2014 edition will focus on Benelux and therefore will encourage major new connections with Belgium, Netherlands and Luxembourg. WEMW selects feature films and documentary projects in development which clearly connect Eastern and Western Europe (in particular the regions in focus); this makes it possible to involve many producers who are looking for co-producers, sales agents, broadcasters and financial support specifically in the different countries involved in each edition, while at the same time making it possible to gather together many key players from the selected Western European film industry and explore in detail the funding and co-production possibilities offered by the spotlight countries. The upcoming edition of WEMW will take place on January 20/22, 2014 and will include a pitching component and a forum of round tables and case studies. All selected producers/projects will compete for the WEMW Development Award and for the 2014 EAVE European Producers Workshop scholarship. #onlinepitch - EDN ON-LINE PITCH – Ove Rishoy Jensen, Denmark At an EDN Online Pitching Session four documentary projects are pitched to a group of leading international financers and decision makers. Each session lasts one hour and has a specific focus like science, history, art or similar. The pitching takes place online through a virtual meeting room, where all participants have video and audio contact with each other. This means a focused, effective, low cost pitching opportunity, where can meet international partners without the expenses of travelling. #distrify - DISTRIFY – Peter Gerard, Scotland Distrify is a powerful suite of digital tools that turn the entire internet into a movie marketplace. Consumer behaviour and demand around the world are changing rapidly and Distrify provides a solution for the film industry to adapt to current trends. Attention-spans are shorter, people are avidly sharing things they like, people often won't wait until your official release in their country to watch your film. They want your film now. In the new film marketplace you need to make your film available to purchase immediately when the audience sees the trailer. The only way to do that is with Distrify. #docshop - DOCSHOP – Mark Daems, Belgium Ideas need maturing, nourishing, and time to develop. It happens too often that filmmakers try to go through this maturing process all by themselves, avoiding the critical reflection that is so necessary in the project's development. DocShop stimulates this critical reflection, by confronting the filmmakers with the opinions, feedback and vision of their peers and other film professionals. The filmmakers are forced to justify their choices, thus enhancing the project's maturity and its chances to get results. Besides a project-focused approach, DocShop intends to encourage networking, and to sow the seeds for a filmmaker's community in Flanders. It is clear that DocShop requires a great commitment and openness from its participants. #hackathon - POV HACHATHON LABS – Adnaan Wasey, USA Five teams of filmmakers and developers challenge to create web documentary prototypes - be they mobile sites, web apps, widgets, games or something we've never seen before - over two days of intense collaboration. - DOC HEADS – Tristan Anderson, UK Doc Heads is a bi-monthly night for documentary filmmakers. Set up in 2009 by five filmmakers as a way of introducing all their filmmaking friends to each other, it's expanding to become one of the leading events in the documentary calendar. Every two months, they screen a selection of the best and latest works in the field, and invite members to join them in an unpretentious night of discussion and drinks #docheads - DOC LOUNGE - Katharine Simpson, Sweden "In the past Doc Lounge’s events have attracted the attention and interest of many. We provide our audiences with inspiring evenings, based around great documentaries but with added music, talks, performances, and exhibitions. Doc Lounge has grown into an alternative screening network, where we screen the very best new documentaries (before their cinema release) in a variety of alternative venues, in 15 cities, across four nordic countries". #doclounge H 17.30 – 19.00, PALAZZO DELLE FESTE WHAT ITALY HAS TO OFFER With the recent exception of RAI-DOC3, in Italy the broadcasters rarely invest in the production of creative documentaries. And yet we do make quite a number of documentary films. Most of them are self produced eating up the filmmakers savings, others are made thanks to institutional support, and this comes mainly at the regional level. In this session we will hear from Doc/it, the Festival dei Popoli Industry and the regional film commissions what they are offering through their initiatives. Most importantly, the regional film commissions will tell us how much money they invest and how can we get it! H 21.30, CAMARILLO CAFE' SCREENING AND CASE STUDY with Caterina Monzani LA VALLE DELLO JATO di Caterina Monzani, Sergio Vega Borrego prod. Miafilm, Italia, 67 min., 2012 presentato a Documentary in Europe 2011 In the heart of Sicily, where the Mafia still rules, one man and his family-run TV station, has become a relentless voice against corruption and organized crime. “The Valley of the Jato” portrays the daily life of self-made journalist Pino Maniaci on his personal crusade to free Sicily from corruption with his family run TV Station, Telejato. In a land fighting with itself to purge old traditions, energetic, chain-smoking Pino Maniaci appears as a controversial maverick struggling to stay on-air in shifting times. H 0.00, CAMARILLO CAFE' SCREENING AND CASE STUDY with Giedre Zickyte HOW WE PLAYED THE REVOLUTION di Giedrė Žickytė prod. Just a moment, Lithuanaia, 63 min., 2011 presentato a Documentary in Europe 2008 The story of the film begins in 1984, the very beginning of perestroika in USSR, when a group of architects decided to organize a one night music band as a New Year’s party joke in Kaunas, Lithuania. The joke proved to be so good that rumors about the new exciting rock band ANTIS spread from lips to lips. Imposing make-up and props, stylized show, and lyrics were creating pervasive caricature of the Soviet propaganda and perfectly discrediting the absurd of the Soviet reality. Soon their intellectual clownery grew into the Rock Marches – massive events involving thousands of people – that transformed into the big meetings for Lithuanian Independence later named the Singing Revolution. This is the story about the small country that in the certain period of history managed to overshadow all the other news headlines in the world. This is the story about the people who raised their independence with the smiles and songs regardless of the danger of the situation. H 17,15 – 18.30, PALAZZO DELLE FESTE SCREENING AND CASE STUDY with M.Buono THE BELLA VISTA, di Alicia Cano prod. Thomas Mauch, Uruguay, Germania, 73 min., 2012 presentato a Documentary in Europe 2011 'El Bella Vista' is the story of a house started as a football club, becoming a successful transvestite brothel and changes at last to a Catholic Chapel, all in a small conservative village in Uruguay. Two transvestites, one brothel's Madame, a brickmaker, ex football player, and a nun will bring to life this battle for control of a single physical space, home to mutually antagonistic institutions, driven by the same motivation: passion. Meet Josip, amateur inventor set out to decode the artistry of leaf-playing, and the last leaf-players – Vera, ex private detective, and Pera, the know-it-all peasant – in the autumns of their lives, still going for the verdant leaves. Music has rarely been so offbeat. SEPTEMBER, 14 H 9.00 – 10.00, PALAZZO DELLE FESTE HOW CAN “DOCUMENTARY IN EUROPE” MAKE A DIFFERENCE? Sandra Gaudenzi, interactive documentaries expert, I-docs (UK)* I have been teaching interactive narrative and new media theory at the London College of Communication since 1999, I am finishing writing a PhD at Goldsmiths University of London about interactive documentaries and I am one of the conveners of the i-Docs symposium in Bristol. I come from a background in television production. I have worked ten years producing content for cultural television shows… but I rapidly got frustrated about the whole process of “ordering” stories, and “cutting down” people. When computers started to appear into the edit suites I understood that it was the beginning of a whole new way of conceiving the narrative experience… hence my switch to interactive television, and then teaching. I now plan to go slowly go back to the production world – but this time of interactive documentaries!
