Shaken, stirred and confused
The latest film from the Bond franchise raises puzzling questions about the hero’s mixed national
allegiance
A.
JAMES BOND first came into being the year of the queen’s coronation, when he appeared in
“Casino Royale” published in 1953. These two cultural ambassadors have been linked ever
since, both conveying an obliging view of Britishness in a changing world. So it is fitting that
special agent 007 celebrates his jubilee wrapped in a Union Jack. “Skyfall”, the latest
instalment of the longest-running cinema franchise, is the most overtly patriotic Bond film yet.
B.
Played for the third time by a thuggish Daniel Craig, this Bond spends much of the film
meditating on the sense of duty and love of country that inspired his work as a licensed killer.
The puzzling question is quite which country that is. Against a backdrop of a push for
independence in Scotland, the half-Scottish Bond (his mother was apparently Swiss) careers
among the thoroughly British imagery of fast Land Rovers, crushed German cars and the motif
of a noble, if comical, English bulldog.

If he (James Bond) seems a bit confused, it’s not without good reason. Ian Fleming’s original
novels presented Bond as an aspirational, thoroughly English figure, who emerged from the
post-war rubble with refined tastes and bold courage. Yet this post-imperial relic underwent a
transformation when he made his big-screen debut 50 years ago. Brought to life by the
Scottish Sir Sean Connery, Bond suddenly became Scottish too—elegant and classless, but also
a roving outsider.

Fleming was so inspired by Sir Sean’s performance that he retro-fitted Bond’s Scottish backstory into later books.

ISPIRATO A ELUANA
No, non è un film a tesi
A.
Bella Addormentata non è un film a tesi, un film a difesa di un principio, io l’ho fatto prima di
tutto perché mi sono sentito libero (relativamente) di pensare, di immaginare e poi di
realizzare quello che nel tempo avevo pensato e immaginato.
Solo a queste condizioni e cioè di non avere sempre l’angoscia di essere nel giusto ho potuto
farlo.
B.
È probabile che per il suo argomento Bella Addormentata da alcuni possa essere preso a
pretesto per parlare d’altro (penso a un certo pubblico ancora ideologizzato, a maestri del
pensiero che scrivono sui giornali, a commentatori politici di destra o di sinistra).
C.
Un regista non è un cinico se ammette che ciò che più lo interessa è fare un bel film. La
bellezza non è fredda, ha bisogno di emozioni vere che sono la premessa indispensabile per
fare immagini nuove, originali e che non possono che partire dalla sua vita, trasformando le
esigenze della sua vita, che non sono sempre il direttamente vissuto, in immagini irriconoscibili.
D.
Sono amico e ammiro Peppino Englaro, condivido le sue idee eppure non c’è nel film odio
verso chi pensa e agisce in modo opposto, né illusione di fargli cambiare idea.
Anche per questo il film non è giusto che diventi la bandiera di un’idea.
Non lo è stato nel farlo. Anzi, nonostante l’argomento, ci siamo anche divertiti nel farlo,
ridendo al pensiero di quello che dirà questo o quello, mi toglierà il saluto eccetera.
Il film non è triste. Finisce con un risveglio.
