Ovidiu Badila 11 n 1826, in the first of four volumes published in Italy and entitled Dizionario e bibliografia della musica, the Austrian doctor and musicologist Peter Lichtental wrote of the double bass: “It is the foundation of the orchestra; no other instrument can replace it. Whether it keeps to its grave and severe character or, swept by passions, joins the other instruments in expressing them, the richness of its sound, its frank and grandiose rhythm and, in particular, the wonderful order it brings to the harmonic masses, mark its presence everywhere”. This otherwise perfect description of the orchestral double bass overlooks the other roles played by this instrument in the history of music. Although Lichtental focussed on the situation in which the double bass is more frequently employed, it is only right to mention also the old church double bass, with the role of reinforcing the organ; the double bass in support of the harpsichord, fundamental for the realisation of the continuo; the double bass employed in chamber music; and the solo double bass. It is an instrument that can indeed have many different forms, measurements, names and variety of roles, not to mention of performance praxis. The double bass can be mounted with three, four or five strings, tuned by 5ths, 4ths or a combination of 3rds and 4rths. It is often subject to scordatura, which means that its normal tuning is modified - generally raised by half a tone or a third. Its sound extension and technical potential are amazing. Through virtuosos by the strong personality such as Sperger and Dragonetti, this instrument became popular also outside the orchestra, attracting the attention of Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven. Thus the history of music records a performance of Beethoven’s Sonata in G minor for cello and piano with Dragonetti at the double bass and the composer himself at the piano (Op. 5 No. 2). Bottesini would be the first, however, to win over the admiration of audiences and critics for this instrument. Born in Crema in 1821 and died in Parma in 1889, the Italian Giovanni Bottesini was one of the finest double bass virtuosos ever born in Europe. He attained fame also as a conductor, composer and teacher. His instrumental works (concertos, fantasias, capriccios, romances…), which were written for personal use, are among the most demanding from the point of view of solo technique; in his didactical writings he would offer an explanation of the moment of glory experienced by the double bass. Bottesini was a forerunner of the modern, touring concert performer. A tireless traveller and a protagonist of the most important opera and concert seasons of three continents, where he appeared as a conductor (first conductor of Aida in Cairo ), soloist and composer, he met with enormous success and was dubbed by the critics “the Paganini of the double bass”. The fame and popularity he achieved in more that fifty years of brilliant activity earned him recognition from the Emperors of Russia and France; the Queens of Spain, Holland and England; and the kings of Italy and Portugal. Ironically, while his efforts to emancipate the double bass were overshadowed by the popularity enjoyed by the violin, he would be destined to rest beside the famous Nicolò I 12 Paganini in the cemetery of Parma, where he is buried in a monumental funerary chapel. One of the most celebrated virtuosos of the Romantic age (Rossini called him “the most well-rounded talent there is in Europe today”), Bottesini was a very important figure for his instrument. He was in Havana and in the United States (1846-1850), in England and Italy (1855-1857), in Mexico City, where he reorganised the Conservatory (1854), in Paris (1855-1857), Palermo, Naples (where he founded the Società del Quartetto Napoletana, 1861-1863), and in Florence. Later he also appeared in Spain, France, Austria, Russia, England, Portugal, Germany, Holland, the Scandinavian countries, in Cairo, Argentina and in Bucarest. He played under the baton of Rubinstein and Gounod; he took turns with J. Strauß conducting at Covent Garden and, on 15th November 1855, with Berlioz, he was at the head of an orchestra of 1200 elements at the Paris international exposition. The first two CDs of our box-set feature a series of Fantasias on themes from famous Italian early 19th-century operas, and some other works, some of which are drawing-room pieces (like the dreamy Rêverie), others virtuoso works (like the Capriccio di bravura or the Grande allegro di concerto alla Mendelssohn), others lyrical compositions (Elegia, Romanza patetica, Adagio melanconico). In the Fantasias on operatic themes Bottesini draws from his instrument unexpected potentialitites. Following a trend that was widespread throughout the 19th century (how to forget Paganini’s and Liszt’s masterpieces?), Bottesini turned for inspiration to the most famous operatic arias, treating them in a brilliant and original way. Bellini’s last opera, I Puritani, provides inspiration for as many as two Fantasias: one for cello and double bass (written and interpreted with Alfredo Piatti at London’s Exter Hall) and one for solo double bass, played as an encore at a concert held at La Scala on 22nd July 1858. The concertante works for double bass and orchestra, once considered an eccentric expression of instrumental mastery, are recently attracting the attention not only of the new generations of specialists, but also of ever increasing supporters, who are discovering that the double bass can be an agile, expressive and prominent instrument. A gifted and original composer, in his concertante works for double bass (featured in our 3rd CD) Bottesini blended his specific and profound knowledge of the instrument, the strong Italian operatic tradition and the chamber and symphonic Mittle-European tradition. Bottesini’s familiarity with the classical forms enabled him to develop rich and inspired melodies, and balanced orchestrations, with dense tutti passages and light and idiomatic accompanying sections, surprising at times for the choice of instrumental forces. Thus is for the brief Concerto in B minor (in three movements: Allegro moderato, Andante, Finale - Allegro quasi una polacca) and for the ampler Concerto in F sharp minor (also in three movements: Allegro moderato, Andante, Finale - Allegro con fuoco) notable for its dramatic character, symphonic inspiration and mature solo writing. The Duo Concertante for violin and double 13 bass originates from the Duetto of Bottesini and Arpesani, also called Concerto per due Contro-Bassi (Concerto for two double basses). After its American debut, in 1851 the piece was performed for London audiences with one part transcribed for violin and played by Camillo Sivori, Paganini’s pupil. Later also Papini, Vieuxtemps and Wieniawsky performed it with Bottesini, contributing to this piece’s success. The work is structured in two movements, both marked Allegro maestoso, in 4/4 time. After an orchestral introduction in A minor, the violin and the double bass take to the field, with cadenzas separated by slower orchestral passages. Following a theme in 6/8 time, played by the double bass and then by both instruments, the second section re-proposes the music material previously exposed, with added dynamics and at a faster pace. The work by Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) ending this third CD, Variations on a Rococo theme Op. 33, dates from 1876. First performed in 1877, it represents an homage to Mozart in which the Russian composer intended to stylise 18th-century music forms. Fascinating for its melodic vein yet simple writing, it is, with Pezzo capriccioso Op. 62, the only work for cello and orchestra composed by Tchaikovsky. Seven variations follow a short orchestral prelude (Moderato assai, quasi andante) and the soloist’s theme (Moderato semplice). In the present version the solo part has been adapted to the tone-colour and technical resources of the double bass, while the orchestration has not been touched, to grant a consistent reading of this gem of concert repertoire. Three Grand duets for double basses composed by Giovanni Bottesini Pupil of the Conservatory of Music and dedicated to his Professor Luigi Rossi), as recites the title of the manuscript kept at the library of the Milan Conservatory. Dating from 1836-39, they are among the earliest compositions by the young musician. “Comparable to the best Paganinian Caprices” (Marinotti), the duets are characterised by the composer’s eagerness to build up passages of extreme difficulty and by his search for variety within the tone-colour parity of the two instruments. The result is beautiful music which is simple and genuine, firmly anchored to the bel canto tradition yet graciously floating on the waters of the most advanced instrumental virtuosity. Unlike Paganini, who wrote nothing for two equal instruments, Bottesini followed the example of the Lombard composers, first and foremost Alessandro Rolla. Perhaps naively or perhaps not - he overlooked an important detail for the fortunes of these pieces, which are well-known but rarely performed: the crucial requirement of having two outstanding double bass virtuosos. Indeed although the contemporary critics reviewed some concerts of Bottesini and Arpesani - his friend and colleague - no other public performances of these duets are recorded. After asserting himself as a “unique and matchless genius”, Bottesini would never again appear in duo with another double bassist. He would instead compose duets for his instrument and violin, 14 cello, clarinet, voice and piano, in search of new tone-colour combinations. A further reason for reviving these works. Like the rest of his output, the duets bear no opus number, nor is the tonality specified, for with the scordatura the double bass is a transposing instrument. Originally composed for a three-string double bass tuned by 4ths, the duets are here played on four-string instruments with the A-E-B-F# tuning usually employed by Bottesini for his solo performances. The fourth string - the low F# , which is a must on today’s double basses - is used only in certain passages where it is necessary for harmonic reasons, where in the original the higher octave is marked due to the lack of extension in the low register. With their rare tone-colours and sound effects, alternating lyrical passages with volleys of fast notes in the transcendent parts, these three duets are an important contribution to the double bass literature. The first duet, quite operatic in character and influenced by Bellini, opens with a 4/4 Allegro in A Major. The first movement features two themes and is structured in blocks; after a first contrapuntal part the melody of the first double bass prevails, before being taken up by the second instrument. The exposition ends with an ff in unison. The second movement, a three-part Andante in 6/8 time and in D Major (A-B-A), is exquisitely expressive. The finale, a Polacca in 3/4 and in A Major, makes a fine display of virtuosity: lively, dancing and fast-paced, it masterfully combines double-stops, balzati, staccati, picchettati, ricochet and what more. The second duet opens with an Allegro agitato in 4/4 time and in D minor, which is dominated by a Beethoven-like main theme and a second theme with very technical passages. Its development is elaborate and quite dramatic; the tension which is established between the two instruments gradually lessens only in the second movement, an Andante in 9/8 in B flat Major, typically Italian and characterised by unexpected harmonies interspersed with arpeggios and melodic imitation. The following Rondo-Allegro in 2/4 and in D Major, opens with an introduction, a cadenza and a very humorous first theme (A). A second theme (B), long and demanding, sets the two performers to comparison; the A theme, followed by a third theme - C, Meno mosso in B flat Major, grand and imitative - which returns to D Major reintroducing elements of the previous themes, lead to the finale in a rather serious manner, although ironic and facetious accents are never too far away. The last duet has a clear Paganinian imprint. The main theme of the Andantino in 3/8 and in E Major - first sustained by held chords, then by arpeggios and finally by repeated double notes - leads to the 6/8 Presto in the same tonality. Between fine contrapuntal parts and Rossinian quotations, the virtuoso passages are interrupted only by the more tranquil theme and by another cantabile section which gives the two performers an opportunity to catch their breath. Ovidiu Badila (Traduit par Cécile Viars) 25 Ovidiu Badila and Antonella Costantini ITALIANO ENGLISH Ovidiu Badila nacque nel 1962 a Costanza (Romania) e svolse i suoi studi a Bucarest. Ovidiu Badila was born in Costanza, Romania, in 1962 and studied in Bucharest. When still very young he was acclaimed for his exceptional solo performances. A versatile musician, he performed not only the classical repertoire but also modern music, jazz and film music. His opposition to the regime then in power led him, in 1987, to move to western Europe, where he continued his studies with Sergiu Celibidache and rivalled well-known colleagues such as E. Ferraresi, W. Guttler, F. Petracchi and J. M. Rollez. His unconventional and virtuoso approach to double bass technique soon won him the unconditional approval of critics and audiences. The winner of numerous prizes, among them those of Markneukirchen (1985), Reims (1988) and San Sebástian (1989), he held master classes at the Scuola di Alto Perfezionamento in Saluzzo and, form 1992, taught the double bass at the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik of Trossingen (Germany). From 1997 he also taught at the Musik-Akademie der Stadt Basel, in Switzerland. Ovidiu Badila played an instrument built by Giacomo Zanfi in 1809. Sudden death prematurely interrupted his brilliant career on 21st March 2001. 28 [RTF page header: DEUTSCH FRANÇAIS Ovidiu Badila wurde 1962 im rumänischen Constanta geboren und studierte in Bukarest.
