leganza e tecnologia. Un abbinamento
estremamente difficile da realizzare ma
che, già alla vista esterna, è possibile
riconoscere in Liberty, 50 metri realizzato da Isa
(acronimo di International Shipyards Ancona), un
punto di riferimento nel panorama internazionale.
Primo della serie 500 semi-custom in acciaio e
alluminio, Liberty è sceso in mare a marzo del
2011 e, consegnato a giugno, ha iniziato subito
un’intensa attività di crociere che hanno fatto
conoscere la sua linea decisamente personale
ed elegante. Un profilo caratterizzato da un
importante slancio di prua, sottolineato da una
livrea grigia dello scafo, abbinata al blocco
bianco dei ponti superiori. Linee filanti quindi,
nate dalla sinergia ampiamente collaudata tra
il cantiere e Andrea Vallicelli, progettista del
concept e dell’external styling. Liberty segna, in
particolare, il debutto nel mondo dello yachting
dell’interior designer Maria Stefania Biondo dalla
Casapiccola che spiega così il suo approccio a
questo nuovo mondo e il suo intervento sullo
yacht di Isa. «Normalmente uno yacht di 50
metri viene pensato e progettato come una
casa galleggiante. Come un insieme di spazi
che consentono di continuare la vita domestica
flottando sull’elemento acqua invece che
sull’elemento terra. Per Liberty, invece, l’acqua
è la sua ragion d’essere, e il mare è la sua musa
ispiratrice». Risultato di questa impostazione

is a fine example of how stunning the results can be when
the two do click in a single streamlined package. Liberty is the
first in the new steel and aluminium 500 semi-custom series from
International Shipyards Ancona and she splashed in March 2011.
Immediately after her delivery in June, she embarked upon an
extensive cruising programme that won her highly individual,
elegant profile a host of new admirers. Her prominent bow rake
is underscored by a grey hull livery and gleaming white upper
decks. Those eager lines are the fruit of the well-established relationship between the yard and Andrea Vallicelli, the brain behind
the model’s concept and external styling. However, Liberty also
hails the yachting debut of interior designer Maria Stefania Biondo
dalla Casapiccola who explained her approach to this new world
and her work on the ISA yacht: “Normally a 50-metre yacht would
be designed as a floating home. In other words, as an amalgam
of spaces that allows domestic life to continue afloat rather than
ashore. However, with Liberty, water is her whole raison d’être
and the sea is the muse that inspired her.” The result is that direct
contact with the sea is a priority and achieved through large aper-

that contact with the sea and to allow guests to experience it
outdoors, all three upper decks have large relaxation areas. The
first and foremost of these is the sun deck which includes not only
a dining area under the roll-bar, but also chaise longues further
aft and a large area with sun pads to the stern as well as a wood
and slate bar forward. Wood and slate may seem like an unusual
combination for a bar but the arrangement of the various spaces
on the decks is actually much more conventional. The main deck
begins with a nicely sheltered aft cockpit and continues indoors
with the saloon which is followed by the dining room. Beyond
these is a lobby with the main staircase and the large galley to
port, we find an office to starboard. This leads into the full-beam
owner’s suite which has its own private balcony. There is a se111

è così la grande importanza data al contatto
diretto con il mare, che si realizza attraverso
ampie aperture sui dehors dei ponti. E, sempre
nella ricerca del contatto con l’ambiente marino
e della possibilità di vivere questo all’aperto,
su tutti i tre ponti superiori sono state realizzate
ampie zone dedicate al relax. Prima su tutte
quella del sundeck che comprende, oltre a una
zona pranzo sotto il roll bar e a un grande spazio
per lettini e chaise longue a poppa, anche una
zona bar a prua con i piani rivestiti in legno e
ardesia. Un accostamento decisamente inusuale.
Più tradizionali invece l’organizzazione e la
distribuzione sui ponti dei vari ambienti. Così il
ponte principale, con il ben riparato pozzetto
di poppa, prosegue all’interno con la zona
destinata al salone a cui fa seguito quella della
sala da pranzo. Superata l’area del disimpegno,
con la scala di collegamento tra i ponti e la
grande cucina collocata a sinistra, sulla dritta, si
trova poi lo studio che introduce alla suite full
beam dell’armatore dotata di una terrazza privata.
Il ponte superiore, dedicato a un ulteriore living,
ha come elemento caratterizzante le dimensioni
di questo open space: ben 70 metri quadrati che
accolgono un bar e una zona conversazione che
dà sulla terrazza di poppa. È da qui che si gode
di una visuale sul mare decisamente spettacolare.
«Il concetto era creare ambienti confortevoli
ed eleganti ispirati al mare in modo originale e
nuovo», spiega Maria Stefania Biondo. «Anziché
creare un rifugio sul mare, lo scopo è stato
rendere il soggiorno su Liberty un’esperienza
unica, popolandolo di creature marine e di
dettagli presi in prestito al mare». E per realizzare
questa esperienza unica su Liberty tutti gli
ambienti sono costruiti attorno a un protagonista
della fauna o della flora marina: dalla tartaruga
al cavalluccio marino, dallo squalo al nautilus, al
gambero, alla stella marina, al corallo. Protagonisti
che danno il proprio nome ai singoli ambienti,

sheer size – a massive 70 square metres that encompasses a bar
and a seating area opening on to the aft terrace. Needless to say, it
also affords absolutely spectacular views of the surrounding sea.
“The concept was to create comfortable, elegant spaces that felt
fresh and original,” explains Maria Stefania Biondo. “Rather than creating a floating sanctuary, the goal was to turn every stay aboard
Liberty into a unique experience by populating her with sea creatures and details borrowed from the marine environment.” This
led to all of Liberty’s spaces being shaped around one features
from marine flora or fauna – a turtle, a sea horse, a shark, starfish or
coral. They also lent their names to the individual spaces to further
the interior with the result that the yacht feels much larger overall, partly too because it makes the interior feel like a continuation of the exterior. Mother-of-pearl plays a significant role
as it is used to veneer furnishings and also in the bathrooms.”
These very personal choices are flanked by many other design
elements, such as a B&B Italia armchair and some lamps created
by BleuNature of Belgium. There are also several other bronze
lamps which were designed personally by Maria Stefania Biondo dalla Casapiccola who did the same for the handles on the
closets and drawers. The fabrics, carpets and wallpapers, on
the other hand, are all from La Casa di Babette in Milan, while
the stone used for the bathrooms and hand-basins is by SDA
enhance the owner and the guests’ feeling of contact with the sea.
“Every space focused around a large picture of a marine creature
which also inspires the rest of the décor details,” continues the designer. “The look is modern but warm and comfortable, enriched
by lots of unexpected, original details. The dominant tones are
neutrals: greys, teak and white. But they’re brought alive by touches
of bright coral red or aquamarine and given an exclusive feel by fabrics with unusual finishes and patterns. The latter include the turtle
shell-motif silk that’s been used on the walls in the cabin of the
same name. The coral-pattern curtains are another good example.”
The great focus in the design process was, of course, on the
choice of materials. Treated, white-washed teak was used for

più a contatto con il mare. «Ogni ambiente
verte attorno alla gigantografia di una creatura
marina che diventa ispirazione per tutti i dettagli
di decoro», continua la designer. «Lo stile è
moderno, ma caldo e confortevole, arricchito
da molteplici dettagli inaspettati e originali.
I toni dominanti sono neutri, grigio, teak e
bianco, ravvivati da tocchi di colori accesi di
rosso corallo o verde acqua e impreziositi da
stoffe dagli effetti o dai motivi inusuali. Come la
seta goffrata con motivo simile al guscio della
tartaruga che ricopre le pareti dell’omonima

and 123 Matieres, both of which are French companies. Needless to say, art has its place aboard in this elegantly eclectic mix, most notably the David Begbie sculptures located in
the owner’s stateroom and another
picture-sculpture by Helidon Xhixha. All in all, Liberty’s style is a very
personal mix, as the designer herself
freely admits. Stefania Biondo concludes: “The challenge with Liberty
was to create spaces that had all the
modern comforts and technologies
without falling into the trap of pandering to the stereotypes of a luxury
superyacht.” •

Particolare attenzione è stata soprattutto rivolta
alla scelta dei materiali. Per esempio l’utilizzo
di un teak trattato e sbiancato anche per gli
interni, con l’effetto di allargare visivamente
le superfici dello yacht e di sembrare una
continuazione con l’esterno. Anche la
madreperla gioca il suo ruolo rivestendo mobili
e bagni». Accanto a queste scelte molto
personali, alcuni elementi di design come una
poltrona di B&B Italia e alcune lampade create
dalla casa belga BleuNature. Altre lampade in
bronzo sono state disegnate di persona da
Maria Stefania Biondo dalla Casapiccola, così
come le maniglie di armadi e cassetti. Tessuti,
tappeti e carte da parati vengono invece da
La Casa di Babette di Milano, mentre le pietre
di bagni e lavandini sono delle francesi SDA
e 123 Matieres. A bordo ci sono poi alcune
opere d’arte, in particolare le sculture di David
Begbie nell’armatoriale e un quadro-scultura di
Xhixha. Un mix quindi molto personale perché,
come dice concludendo la designer, «la sfida
su Liberty è stata realizzare ambienti con tutti
i comfort e le tecnologie moderne, senza mai
cadere negli stereotipi comuni dei grandi
yacht di lusso». •
