January 2009 – December 2011
PhD candidate in “Political sciences and International relations”,
Department of Political Studies, University of Turin. Visiting researcher
scholar at the Fernand Braudel Center, University of Binghamton, NY
(September 2010 – July 2011).
Research Project: “A Pop-Camorra: the culture of mediation in 100
films about the Campanian organized crime”
The research project deals with a delicate issue: can popular culture help to
disseminate an appropriate analytical knowledge about criminal organizations? The
research identifies the main theoretical questions that every study of Camorra has to
face. In particular, it explains its power as a dynamic mix of violence and social
consensus. The study, then, verifies how 100 films have dealt with these fundamental
questions. The work's main thesis is that, on specific conditions, a culture of
mediation can promote the collective awareness, which is necessary to defy the
social consensus that accounts for mafia-type organizations' power.
Dot 2.0 , Virtual Department of Political and Social Studies
In May 2009 I launched the initiative Dot 2.0, whose aim was to create a instrument
of internal communication, among the PhD students of my department, and to
promote the utilization of the NICT and multimedia within social sciences.
Today Dot 2.0 is a project which connects scholars, students, and professionals. It
produces videos, documentaries, scientific and journalistic articles, that document
the importance of the social scientific analysis in the understanding of
contemporary societies.
“..because social sciences matter..” is its tagline.
