Spinola, 8 – 20149 Milano www.dellupiarte.com WHY ENRICO BAJ The idea to present the works of ENRICO BAJ is conceived for a passion that arrives from far away, passing from the first years of the twentieth century until the post-war period, with an eye to the actual contemporary market. We have not chosen ENRICO BAJ... its he who has chosen us because his aesthetic taste has always involved us, therefore we could not forget an artist that has marked in such indelible way the years 50/60/70 in Milan, Italy and Europe. The selection of the works is taken care in order to savour the collectors to his concept of art. The guide line of the gallery will be always to propose what we consider valid within the history of art without never being conditioned from the market. Baj misses from the cultural scene, first of all from that Milanese, for which it was an important propeller, from more than ten years, therefore we are able to, with a temporal distance, to become account of the historical importance of his work. In this occasion we have the opportunity to examine carefully his works. We can discover the intrusions and the overlaps of materials, colors, and also of the objects of common use. Sets that we could consider instead of the painting like origin of the images in the images. All these at first sight are hidden by the preponderant dominance of the main subject – imaginative portraits often of Ladies and Generals. But inside of the paintings we discover narrations or citations; better than the references to the complexity of the aesthetic modern informations. Baj, in order to build his works, he always used different techniques, sometimes contemporarly, from the assemblage to the collage togheter with scales and overlaps of several materials. The childish spirit that distinguishes him is not recognizable only from the fact that often inserts 9 Paris, October 1965: with Duchamp at the Festa della Gioconda Parigi, ottobre 1965: con Duchamp alla Festa della Gioconda parts of the toys in his works or he also builts a famous cycle using parts of meccano, a popular toy. The present ludic aspect is closely linked to ironic content if not sarcastic of his portraits. The self-satisfaction of the characters evidenced from numerous medàille and distinctions, underlined and benevolently mocked in the context of the composition, it announces the spread of the exaggerated narcissism in the today’s society. Enrico Baj, the founder of the Nuclear Mouvement, in reality stands out in the artistic panorama of the age as a personage outside from the outlines and free from every kind of yoking. Certainly we could recognize in his works the references to the historical movements. How to not deny the heritage of futurism, obvious from his use of poor materials, but altogether re-invented and transformed from the constellation of the subliminal symbols, able to transform the vision of the existence. Enrico Baj had frequentations with Italian and foreign poets and literates. Multiple encounters that have carried him to construct an existence in which there was not a clean separation between lived and created. This reason pushes Baj to collaborate actively also with the theatre. All the heroes and the appearances of the funny tragedy we see them represented also in canvases. Movement that was, among the artistic tendencies of that period, greatly innovative both from the formal point of view and from that ideological, opened to establish contacts with European artists and intellectuals. Alongside to Lucio Fontana, Piero Manzoni, Sergio Dangelo, Joe Colombo, Lucio Del Pezzo, Baj tightened relationships and exchanges with Max Ernst, Marcel Duchamp, Yves Klein, ELT Mesens, Asger Jorn and other artists of the group Cobra, with the nouveau realisme, surrealism and pataphysics. Of the activities of those years, in addition to numerous personal and group shows in Italy and in the whole Europe, the manifestos must be remembered, including that of the Nuclear Painting (1952) and Against the style (1957) in opposition to the systematic repetition of the stylistic formalism, as well as the foundation with Jorn in 1954 as it Mouvement internetional pour une Bauhaus imaginiste, that for first lined up against the forced rationalization and geometrical of the art and against the dominion of the straight line and straight angle. His work is articulated into various periods, under the unifying sign of desecrating irony and the continuous renewal of expressiveness. On one side the mirrors, the furniture, the mechanical, the ladies, the modifications, the d’après (homages and whole parodistic remaking of Picasso, Seurat and others) make up the ludic and playful seam, in which prevails the pleasure to make painting with every sort of materials, with a combinatorial drive to which the collage provides many variations and possibilities. From the other, beginning from the nuclear figurations of the fifties, that testify the fears followed to Hiroshima and projected in the future, 85 it manifests a strong civil commitment against all forms of aggression, that through the generals and military parades of the sixties arrives in the seventies to three major works, The funeral of the anarchic Pinelli (1972), Nixon Parade (1974), suggested by the impeachment of the American president, and The Apocalypse (1979). This last composition in progress (in fact it will be enriched by new elements in the following years), constituted from sheets and wooden shapes that can be combined with a mounting variables to form a wide scenography, it almost theatrically puts in scene the degradation of the contemporaneity and the monsters generated from the sleep of the reason and from supine enslavement to modernism and tecnoscience. About the theatrical aspect of the work of Baj and of a certain bond with the commedy of the art spoke various critics, including Edouard Jaguer, André de Pieyre Mandiargues, Jan Van der Mareck. And in fact in the eighties, Baj approaches more directly to the theater, collaborating to numerous realizations. Among these, Ubu re of Alfred Jarry, who staged by Massimo Schuster in 1984 and represented for more than a decade all over the world: the Ubu re of Baj consists in about fifty mechanized puppets used by Schuster as elements 86 of a theater of objects. After all Rabelais, Lamtréament and Jarry are the authors of the past to which he more frequently refers; but with special attention to Jarry, not only because of Ubu but for pataphysics. From the Apocalypse forward the criticism of the contemporaneity of the indiscriminate use of the technology, of the robotics man in current society, the prevalence of form over the substance, of the reduction of art to fashion, the spectacularization and the consumption of everything, is increasingly present in the work of Baj. They are born so, to stigmatize the technological abuse and the myth of the speed, Epater the robot (1983), followed by the Manifesto of the static futurism (1983-86) and the mannequins (1984-87), faceless figures, depersonalized, in which Baj temporarily abandons the collage and where the references to mannerism and metaphysics are obvious. Then, through a series of works, metamorphosis and metaphors (1988), in which the painting still prevails on the collage, he develops a figuration of the imaginary and fantasic that will bring to its maximum expression in the kitsch works of the following years. Baj attacks the kitsch, he believes is the only style that connotes today’s world, in two aspects. On one side, some great combinatorial compositions allude to the exponential growth of the population and represent an anonymous crowd that recognizes itself only in the kitsch generated by the culture of industrial product done in order to seduce the masses of buyers. From the other, almost to create an own mythology, the kitsch uses some emblematic images of past mythologies: Cupid and Psyche, Adam and Eve, the Beauty and the Beast, the Three Graces. It is with these subjects, realized of majolica in Faenza in 1991 that Baj returns to ceramics, to which he already was pushed by Jorn in 1954 on the occasion of the International meetings of the ceramics of Albisola. In 1993 it begins the cycle of tribal masks, images of a modern primitivism with which the opulent society wants to rebuild an instinctual and wild look recycling, as symbols, the objects of daily consumption. In the same line lie the felts (1993-98) and totem (1997). In the first wadding, material always used by Baj to form figures or dress shapes, crushed and compressed, becomes the support of the framework, on which the artist paints with pastels and/or acrylic paints: in the most recent production they are also present pieces of meccano and mosaic. The totems, that constitute a vertical development of the masks, have in the titles an ironic reference to characters of the history, as already in the past several ladies and decorated charactes with bombastic, aristocratic and military titles. Between masks and totem ranks Berluskaiser (1994), shapes in the way of the Apocalypse, satire of the conquest of the then President of the Council through the media and the football game. It is of 1996 a monument to Bakunin, an homage to the anarchy to whose libertarian ideas the artist felt always nearby. Baj has always had closed relationships with Italian and foreign poets or literates. There are authentic about fifty books of artist with prints and original multiple, beginning from 36 etchings for the De Rerum Natura of Luerezio of 1952-1953. They followed collaborations and editions with André Breton, Marcel Duchamp, Raymond Queneau, André de Pieyre Mandiargues, Jean Baudrillard, Octavio Paz, Edoardo Sanguineti, Umberto Eco, Roberto Sanesi, Guido Ballo, Italo Calvino, Paolo Volponi, Giovanni Giudici, Alda Merini and others again. Among the poets of the past Baj showed, besides Lucrezio, Tacito, John Milton’s paradise lost, the Hunting of the snark Lewis Carroll, the epigrams of Martial, the sonnets of Pico della Mirandola. Many are also collaborations of Baj with other artists, from which a considerable number of works was born to four hands, from Fontana, Jorn, Colombo, Bertini, Manzoni in the fifties - sixties, to the American Mark Kostabi (1992) and under French Régis Deparis, Richard and Hervé Di Rosa (1993). Baj placed side by side the writing to the painting. Already from the fifties he participates in the drafting of various avant-garde magazines, among which Il Gesto, Direzioni, Phases, Documento Sud. Afterwards he collaborates to newspapers and magazines. The moment of greatest activity in this field are the eighties. He published numerous books, including Autodamé (Cappelli, 1980), Patafisica (Bompiani, 1982), Automitobiografia (Rizzoli, 1983), Impariamo la pittura (Rizzoli, 1985), together with Renato Guttuso, Fantasia e realtà (Rizzoli, 1987), Cose, fatti, persone (Eleuthera, 1988), Ecologia dell’arte (Rizzoli, 1990), Cosa dell’altro mondo (Eleuthera, 1990), Che cos’è la patafisica? After the felts, presented in Paris in January 1999, the sense of lost time and the fin de siècle leads Enrico Baj on the traces of Marcel Proust, reinforcing once more his strong links with literature. It begins a series of 164 portraits inspired to the Guermantes, to their resonat names, to the intrigues of the Dreyfus affair, to that refined world, decadent and often grotesque. In the summer of 2000 he works with Corneille to the realization of a series of paintings to four hands. In 2001 he begins a new cycle dedicated to the stories of Gilgamès, that are set like ulterior contribution to that open work that is the Apocalypse. Enrico Baj died on the 16th of june 2003. After that it started a very important retrospective; it interested some palces such as the Spazio Oberdan, the Accademia delle Belle Arti di Brera, the Galleria Giò Marconi, the Fondazione Mudima and the CAMeC of La Spezia. 91 EXHIBITIONS | ESPOSIZIONI MAIN PERSONAL EXHIBITION | PRINCIPALI MOSTRE PERSONALI • novembre, Gallerie Berggruen, Parigi 1959 • 3 marzo-8 aprile, Gallery one, Londra • 14 aprile-4 maggio, Gallerie Rivegauche, Parigi 1968 • 10 aprile, studio condotti 75, Roma • aprile, Galleria piattelli, Roma • 9 maggio, Gallerie rivegauche, Parigi • ottobre, Gallerie Pierre, Stoccolma 1960 • 20-29 gennaio, Galleria del Naviglio, Milano 1961 • 7-27 marzo, Gallerie Raymond Cordier, Parigi • 2 dicembre- 12 gennaio, Galleria Schwarz, Milano 1965 • 5-25 febbraio, Baj and cavaliere, Gallery twelve, Minneapolis, Minnesota • aprile-maggio, Gallerie Pierre, Stoccolma • 7 agosto-30 settembre, alternative attuali 2, omaggio a Baj, Castello Spagnolo, l’Aquila 92 1973 • 16 marzo-29 aprile, Museum boymans-van beuningen, Rotterdam • 12 maggio-17 giugno, Moderna Museet, Stoccolma 1974 • maggio-giugno, Palazzo reale e Sala delle Cariatidi, Milano • 5 ottobre-17 novembre, Museum Boymans-van Beuningen, Rotterdam • 18 ottobre-24 novembre, Cabinet des Estampes e Musée d’Art et d’Histoire, Ginevra • 15 ottobre-29 dicembre, Palais de Beaux-Arts, Bruxelles MAIN GROUP EXHIBITION | PRINCIPALI MOSTRE COLLETTIVE 1959 • 10-20 gennaio, Enrico Baj e il gruppo 58: Giudo Biasi, Lucio Del Pezzo, Bruno Di Bello, Sergio Fergola, Luca, Mario Persico, Galleria Sancarlo, Napoli • febbraio, I nucleari, Galleria Minerva, Napoli • 19 marzo-2 aprile, Revues italiennes d’avant-garde, Gallerie Le soleil dans la Tete, Parigi • marzo, phases, Galleria Krzysztofory, Cracovia • 4-20 giugno, Exposiciòn Boa-phases, Museo provincial de bellas Artes Rosa Galisteo De Rodriguez, Santa fè • 5-10 dicembre, art interplanètaire, Gallerie le soleil dans la Tete, Parigi • dicembre, Boite alerte, exposition internationale du surrealisme, Gallerie Danielle Cordier, Parigi 1960 • 8-29 maggio, XVIe Salon de Mai, Musèe d’Art moderne de la Ville de Paris • 29 novembre-14 gennaio, Surrealist intrusion in the Enchanters’ domain, international surrealist exhibition, d’arcy gallerie New York 1961 • 7-28 maggio, XVIIe Salon de Mai, Musèe d’Art moderne de la ville de Paris • 2 ottobre- 12 novembre, De art of assemblage, De Museum of modern art, New York 1965 • 5 febbraio-1 marzo, pop art, noveau realisme etc…, Palais des Beaux-art, Bruxelles • 3-23 maggio, XXI salon de mai, musèe d’art moderne de la ville de Paris • 1 luglio-31 agosto, artists of 1 C Life, Philadelphia museum of art • dicembre, l’ecart aboslu.
