W
hen we speak of clothing, jewelry and accessories, we
are actually talking about a multifaceted
relationship involving the body, personal identity, art
and business.
These items only seem to be an ephemeral phenomenon
driven by consumerism, by fleeting reality, and by a market
that is constantly looking for novelties and new styles.
“Getting dressed” is a mix of the practical, symbolic and
psychological, it is a way of communicating our social
class, religion, community bonds and rituals.
As an extension of the body, clothing has great
communicative potential as we can see in the many fine
paintings that allow us to see a continuous thread in the
evolution of taste and style.

he art collections in Florence document the history of
thought, civilization and costume over the centuries.
Paintings, objects, textiles and accessories open a window
onto the city’s great traditions in gold- and silversmithing, weaving and decorating.

Q
uando parliamo di abbigliamento, gioielli e
accessori parliamo di un rapporto con il corpo,
l’identità, l’arte, il commercio.
Solo in apparenza si tratta di un fenomeno effimero,
dettato dai consumi e da una realtà sempre più fittizia, da
un mercato costantemente alla ricerca di novità e di nuovi
modelli da proporre.
Il gesto di “abbigliarsi”, assolve funzioni pratiche,
simboliche, psicologiche e determina un modo di
comunicare che, attraverso modelli codificati, dichiara
la propria appartenenza, il ceto sociale, la religione, la
comunità, i riti.
Abito come prosecuzione del corpo, potenziale comunicativo testimoniato da numerose opere pittoriche che,
attraverso le oscillazioni del gusto, ci restituiscono una
continuità di significato.

Casa dei Tessuti
isitando la Casa dei Tessuti, fondata nel 1929
da Egisto Romoli, sembra di rituffarsi nei
passati splendori della Firenze medievale e
rinascimentale, quando la città brulicava di
botteghe che vendevano raffinati tessuti di lana o di
seta esportati in tutto il mondo. Romano e
Romolo, figli di Egisto Romoli ed attuali gestori
del negozio, da sempre sono impegnati, oltre che
nella commercializzazione di tessuti delle migliori
qualità, ad offrire un contributo alla formazione
di giovani stilisti. Romano Romoli ha istituito nel
negozio un vero e proprio museo della storia del
tessuto. Completano poi la collezione anche oggetti
di grande valore storico-artistico come un telaio del
‘500 ed alcuni filati del ‘700.

isiting the Casa dei Tessuti, founded in 1929
by Egisto Romoli, is like burying oneself in the
past splendors of Medieval and Renaissance
Florence, when the city was teeming with stores
selling elegant wool or silk fabrics which were
exported all over the world. The Romoli brothers, Romano and Romolo, Egisto’s
sons who now run the business, have always worked hard to commercialize the best
quality fabrics and contribute to the training of young fashion designers.
Romano Romoli has also set up a fabric museum inside the store. The collection is
completed by a number of objects of great historical-artistic value such as a
sixteenth century loom and some eighteenth century yarns.

Liverano & Liverano
N

Liverano nel 1950, è oggi gestito dal fratello
Antonio. Grazie alla professionalità dei proprietari,
questa sartoria, rigorosamente da uomo, è rinomata

realizzati con tessuti pregiati e adatti a soddisfare
i gusti e le esigenze più diverse. I clienti possono

was founded by Luigi Liverano in 1950 and
today is run by his brother Antonio. Thanks to the
owners’ skills and professionalism, this strictly for
men tailor shop is renowned among those who want
clothes with a perfect cut and made of fine materials. Clients can
rely on Antonio’s advice in choosing clothes – for every occasion –
and the appropriate accessories from custom made ties and shirts to
handmade footwear.
During the Pitti Uomo men’s fashion fair the shop holds receptions
where a select group of clients can see the latest Liverano creations.

Pestelli
el 1908 Edoardo Pestelli iniziò la sua attività di
gioielliere presso la famiglia Marchesini, attiva a
Firenze e Roma per tutto il 1800 e primi del 1900,
fornitrice di casa Savoia e altri regnanti d’Europa.
Un prezioso patrimonio di disegni e modelli,
realizzati in argento, piombo e rame, proveniente
da casa Marchesini, è arrivato integro fino ai giorni
nostri ed è tuttora utilizzato ed integrato per la
creazione dei manufatti.
Attualmente il bisnipote Tommaso Pestelli, grazie
alle conoscenze apprese nel campo dell’ oreficeria,
della scultura e del restauro, ha ampliato la classica
produzione con oggetti d’arredamento realizzati
in oro, argento e pietre dure, opere uniche nel loro
genere, ispirate al gusto e alle atmosfere del passato.
E
doardo Pestelli began working as a jeweler in
1908 with the Marchesini family who had been
in business in Rome and Florence throughout the
19th and early 20th centuries, making jewels for the
house of Savoia and other European royal families.
A priceless legacy of the Marchesini drawings and models made of silver, lead and copper
has survived through to the present and is still being used – and complemented – in
the crafting of precious wares. Today, with his knowledge of jewelry making, sculpture
and restorations Edoardo’s great-grandson Tommaso Pestelli, has expanded the classic
product line with decorative items made of gold, silver and semiprecious stones. Each one
is a unique masterpiece inspired by the styles and atmospheres of the past.

Volterrani e Raddi
F
ondata nel 1870 da Oreste Volterrani,
successivamente coadiuvato nella gestione da
Romeo Raddi, oggi l’attività è gestita da Federico
Favilli, pronipote di Romeo Raddi.
La ditta è da sempre specializzata nella
progettazione e produzione a mano di oggetti
di oreficeria e argenteria in stile tradizionale
fiorentino, con particolare cura per le incisioni su
oro e su pietre dure.
Tra le specialità ci sono anche gli anelli a stemma
tagliati e incisi per realizzare simboli o disegni
secondo le richieste del cliente. Situato accanto alla
Casa dell’orafo, l’esercizio contribuisce a mantenere
viva una attività artigianale tipica.

his shop was established by Oreste Volterrani
in 1870, who was joined by Romeo Raddi,
and today it is run by Raddi’s great-grandson,
Federico Favilli. Ever since the beginning the
firm has specialized in designing and handcrafting
traditional Florentine style jewelry and silverware,
engraving gold and semiprecious stones and making
rings with family crests (or other custom designs).
Located next door to the Casa dell’Orafo, Volteranni
e Raddi contribute to keeping a Florentine tradition
alive and thriving.

Officine Panerai
iovanni Panerai fondò questo negozio nel 1860
in una celletta che sorgeva sulle pile del Ponte
alle Grazie e all’inizio del ‘900 fu trasferito nell’attuale
sede di Piazza San Giovanni, dove prese il nome di
Orologeria Svizzera. Da allora l’attività si è tramandata
di generazione in generazione fino alla formazione
dell’attuale società nel 1972: Officine Panerai Srl.
Specializzato nella vendita e riparazione di misuratori del
tempo di tutte le migliori marche, questo negozio ebbe
per primo l’esclusiva di vendita, per Firenze e la Toscana,
degli orologi Patek Philippe, Rolex, Jaeger-Le Coultre e
Girard-Perregaux.
Il negozio ospita anche l’Archivio Storico Panerai, una
selezione di pezzi realizzati nel tempo dall’azienda
fiorentina: orologi, bussole, profondimetri, torce,
strumenti di orologeria.

iovanni Panerai first opened his store in 1860 at
an unusual location: one of the former cells built on
the pilings of Ponte alle Grazie. Early in the 20th century
the store moved to Piazza San Giovanni – where it still is
today – and became the Orologeria Svizzera. The business was handed down from generation to
generation, until 1972 when it was incorporated and became Officine Panerai S.r.l. . Specializing
in the sale and repair of the finest timepieces, the shop was the first exclusive distributor of Patek
Philippe, Rolex, Jaeger-LeCoultre and Girard Perregaux watches in Florence and Tuscany. The store
is also home to the Panerai historic archives, a group of unique items made by the Florentine
firm over the years: watches, compasses, depth meters, flashlights and precision instruments.

Enrico Verità
U
bicato nel fondo dell’antica torre degli
Adimari, l’esercizio fu fondato da Enrico
Verità nel 1865. Oggi l’attività fa parte di una
grande società multinazionale. Sebbene gli arredi
siano stati completamente rifatti nel 1925,
sull’insegna è ancora presente il grande orologio
che da quasi un secolo e mezzo scandisce il tempo
a tutti i fiorentini di passaggio. Riconosciuta nel
1985 come una delle otto orologerie più antiche
d’Italia, il suo laboratorio è specializzato nella
riparazione di ogni tipo di orologi, da quelli antichi
ai più moderni al quarzo. Il vasto assortimento delle
più prestigiose marche ha fatto di questo negozio un
punto di riferimento per tutti i fiorentini alla ricerca
di oggetti di raffinata eleganza e alta qualità.

nrico Verità opened his shop on the ground
floor of the old Adimari tower in 1865. Today
the business is owned by a large multinational
company. Although the interior was completely
remodeled in 1925, the sign outside still has the
big clock that has been telling time for Florentines for over one hundred and
fifty years. In 1985 it was recognized as one of the eight oldest watchmakers
in Italy: the workshop specializes in repairing all kinds of timepieces from
antique clocks to modern quartz watches. The huge selection of the world’s
most prestigious brands has made Enrico Verità a reference point for people
who want refinement, elegance and high quality.

Mannina
alogero Mannina giunge a Firenze dalla Sicilia
all’età di 16 anni e nel 1953 apre la sua bottega
artigiana in via dei Barbadori. Animato dalla
passione per il minuzioso lavoro artigianale il Maestro
Mannina prosegue il mestiere di calzolaio insegnatogli
dal padre, progetta e crea le sue calzature: modelli
unici realizzati per la sua affezionata clientela.
Nel laboratorio si trovano moltissime forme per
la realizzazione di calzature su misura. Con il
passare degli anni l’azienda ha conservato il suo stile
tradizionale e inconfondibile caratterizzato dalla
qualità e originalità pur rimanendo al passo con i
cambiamenti della moda. Il figlio Antonio partecipa
all’attività paterna occupandosi del punto vendita di
via Guicciardini.

alogero Mannina arrived in Florence from Sicily
when he was just 16 years old, and opened his
artisan shop on Via dei Barbadori in 1953. Driven
by a passion for detailed craftsmanship, il Maestro
Mannina carries on the shoemaker’s trade that he
learned from his father. He designs and makes unique footwear for
his loyal customers. The workshop is filled with lasts used to produce
custom-made shoes. Quality and originality are the outstanding
features of the products that are always in step with changing fashions.
Antonio participates actively in his father’s business by operating the
sales point in Via Guicciardini.

Artpell Coke
I
n un suggestivo palazzo di Via de’ Neri, un tempo
strada di grande importanza urbanistica, fin dal
1938 Artpell Coke propone alla clientela pregevoli
articoli in pelle: valigie e borse di squisito taglio
artigianale (dai nomi evocativi come Diligenza)
nonché le cappelliere, civetteria e moda d’un tempo,
fatte con fibra naturale rivettata scrupolosamente
a mano. Oggi da Artpell Coke si possono ammirare
borse di tutti i tipi delle migliori marche, giacche
e cappelli in pelle, gilet e un vasto assortimento di
borse da lavoro. Dal 1994 l’attività è stata ampliata
e comprende oggi anche la vendita di mobili e
suppellettili di antiquariato.

ituated in a beautiful building on Via de’ Neri,
once one of the city’s important streets, Artpell
Coke has been making fine leather goods since
1938. In addition to exquisitely crafted bags and
luggage (with charming names such as Diligenza –
that means stagecoach) Artpell also make hatboxes
– charming accessories of days gone by – using
natural fibers that are strictly hand-bound.
Today, Artpell Coke offers a fine selection of the best
names in bags, leather jackets and hats, vests and
large assortment of briefcases. In 1994 the business
was expanded and the store now sales antique
furniture and knickknacks.

Papini
’attività fu fondata nel 1896 da Ettore Papini
come ditta artigiana specializzata in oggetti di
pelletteria, rilegature di libri, astucci e accessori per
scrittoi, per la cui lavorazione fu necessario realizzare
un grande assortimento di punzoni in bronzo, incisi
a mano, per le decorazioni in foglia d’oro. Nel 1909
la produzione fu estesa al settore della borsetteria,
valigeria e cartellame, oggetti esportati in tutto il
mondo. Premiata più volte fra il 1910 e il 1932
in molte fiere e mostre internazionali, nel 1937
il titolare ricevette il diploma di Maestro Artigiano.
L’esercizio mantiene inalterati gli arredi in quercia
di Slavonia istoriata con disegni in foglia d’oro e gli
stucchi del pittore Polloni, risalenti al 1929.
I
n 1896 Ettore Papini established this artisan firm
making leather goods, book bindings, boxes and
desk accessories which required a huge array of handengraved punches to do gold leaf tooling. By 1909
he had expanded his production range to include
bags, luggage and briefcases that were exported
around the world. After having received many
international awards at trade fairs between 1910 and
1932, in 1937 Ettore Papini received the certificate
of Master Craftsman. The shop still has the Slavonia
oak furnishings with gold leaf and stucco decorations
by the painter Polloni, dating from 1929.

Scuola del Cuoio
L
a Scuola è nata nel dopoguerra dalla collaborazione
tra i frati francescani di Santa Croce e la famiglia
Gori, pellettieri fiorentini dal 1930. I primi allievi
furono gli orfani di guerra e i giovani dei quartieri più
poveri. Oggi i corsi della Scuola sono aperti a italiani
e stranieri, ed offrono borse di studio per i giovani
più bisognosi. Vi si possono acquistare: borse, piccola
pelletteria, scrittoi, portagioie e vari oggetti in cuoio
lavorato. Francesca Gori disegna inoltre borse cucite
a mano, pezzi unici realizzati in pelli rare e decorati
con pietre, gioielli etnici ed argenti antichi. La Scuola
propone anche brevi “immersioni” nell’artigianato della
pelle, per chi vuol respirare l’atmosfera di una vera
bottega fiorentina.

he Scuola del Cuoio (leather school) was the child
of post- World War II cooperation between the
Franciscan friars of Santa Croce and the Gori family,
leather crafters in Florence since 1930. The first
pupils were war orphans and youths from the city’s
poorest neighborhoods. Today, the school offers
courses to Italians and foreigners, along with scholarships for the neediest students.
The Scuola del Cuoio sells handbags, small leather goods, desk sets, jewel boxes and
various tooled leather items. Francesca Gori designs handbags that are hand-sewn –
each one is unique, made of rare hides and decorated with stones, ethnic jewels and
antique silver. The school also offers brief “immersions” into the art of leather-crafting
for those who want to experience the atmosphere of a true Florentine workshop.
