A Jouney to Italy
A Jouney to Italy
In the past classical music has connected Italian culture with Russian culture, today, thanks to Gubernatorsky Orchestra, with the
concert “Italian Journey in the XXI century“, I wish to renew and strenghten the cultural exchange with a concert
able to encourage new generations to art music.
For this program I have choosen authors that, while expressing different creativities and styles, had in commun the use of a
direct musical language, designed to keep the attention focused thans to a succession of emotions, like the landscape observed
from a train crossing Italy.
I am aware that, presenting a completely new program, Gubernatorsky Orchestra has accepted a great challenge. But I am as
well aware that great cultural renewals come from great challenges.

The Music
Risen by Nunzio Ortolano Thanks to this symphony ,that develops in a crescendo of emotion and timbre blending, you can
grasp the typical features of the Italian music, breaking with traditional representations.
Benacus by Roberto di Marino is a piece dedicated to the Garda lake. The composition exalts the distinctive features of this
place, materializing in music the landscape of the lake in all its complexity.
La leggenda di S. Nicola (The legend of Saint Nicholas) by Sergio Monterisi tells the legend of San Nicola from Bari, a city
in the south of Italy where the Church of San Nicola is located, destination of Russian pilgrims when they are in Italy.
Omaggio a Gulda by Nunzio Ortolano. This composition for Cello and Orchestra is a sincere tribute of the composer to
Friedrich Gulda (Austrian pianist and composer 1930 - 2000). Definitely a great opportunity to enhance the pop language of
the instrument.
Vado via! and Grands Boulevards by Sergio Monterisi are two arias taken from the opera “I Fantasmi dell’Opera” by
Sergio Monterisi. In the opera the characters of Puccini’s operas meet on a empty stage of a theatre hoping to find another story
to interpret. In “Vado via!” Tosca gets angry with an author that since long time promises to write a new opera for her. Mimì in
“Grand Boulevards” imagines an extraordinary life she will never get: her only consolation is the eternal love for Rodolfo.
Elegia by Nunzio Ortolano. This Aria was written by Nunzio Ortolano to commemorate the victims of the earthquake and
Tsunami that hit Japan in 2011. It premiered in the Vatican during a concert to honour the victims and has been performed in
the most important theaters in Japan.
Divertissement by Stefano Martinotti is a twinning, in musical terms, between the cities of Milano and Saint Petersburg.
The piece is made by a series of variations, originated from a folksong of the Milanese Risorgimento and from a Russian song.
The composition is easy to listen but written with a cultural musical language.
City Life by Roberto Di Marino. City Life is a new an modern residential area of Milano near to the headquarter of Edizioni
Musicali Wicky, the music publishing company of the composer. The composition is tribute to this area that, as Edizioni Musicali
Wicky, represents the creativity, the elegance and the desire to innovate the cultural field.
Suite from “Il Bambino e La Guerra” by Nunzio Ortolano. A tale in music about the war, observed, thought and lived
through the eyes of a child. An original work that invites reflection on the uselessness of the conflict between men.
Cantu d’Amuri by Ortolano. In Sicilian dialect “Cantu d’amuri” means song of love. This composition for soprano is exactly a
love song.
Sorgi Palermo by Antonio Fortunato. A song of hope from the lyrical opera “Falcone e Borsellino”, a tribute to the two Italian
magistrates Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino and all the other victims of the Mafia, and a message of renewal and rebirth
through music and poetry.
Souvenir di Napoli by Marco Marzi. Thanks to this composition the sounds, songs, characters and the atmospheres of the
tradition of Naples will live again.
