2012: A Year of Milestones
After what feels like an extremely long and blustery winter, we are
finally seeing signs of spring in the Pacific Northwest and at MOG.
Looking ahead to the promise of sunny days, we also are looking at
some cultural bright spots coming our way with big anniversaries,
celebrations and openings.

50th Anniversary of the Studio Glass Movement
The year 2012 marks the 50th anniversary of the development
of Studio Glass in America. As a steward and storyteller of this
movement, MOG has exhibitions planned that will showcase the works of some of Studio
Glass’ biggest names. In April, we open Scapes: Laura de Santillana and Alessandro Diaz de
Santillana, an exhibition of work created entirely at MOG in 2010. This new body of work
by the siblings—who are the grandchildren of Paolo Venini—is based on Hindu mythology.
Thoughtful and contemplative, the exhibition vibrates with intense color and lifts our spirits as
we encounter this incredible merging of ancient and new thought.
In May, we will open Origins: Early Works by Dale Chihuly. This exhibition coincides with
the opening of Chihuly Garden and Glass at Seattle Center. Dale Chihuly’s contributions
to glass art in the United States are unparalleled, and we know his new center will be
spectacular. Finally, in July watch for our 10th anniversary show, Maestro: Recent Works by
Lino Tagliapietra. We’ll have more information about this show in the summer e~fuse.
10th Anniversary of Museum of Glass
Speaking of MOG’s 10th anniversary, 2012 marks one decade since we opened our doors.
In these ten short years, MOG has become an icon for the city, attracting thousands of
tourists and art lovers each year. Our staff is busy planning celebratory events, including
extending invitations to some of our first-year visiting artists to return for Hot Shop
residencies. Many have already said yes, including Gronk whose mural, The Glass Kingdom,
lit up the Grand Hall in 2002. Gronk will return to MOG June 27 – July 1. We are planning
our big birthday party weekend for July 14 – 15, so mark your calendars now!
Welcome LeMay – America’s Car Museum!
Finally, LeMay – America’s Car Museum (ACM) joins the Tacoma Museum District on
June 2. MOG, ACM and artist John Miller have teamed up to create a collection of
large-scale glass hood ornaments inspired by classic designs from various American
automakers and have assembled an exhibition of these works titled Classic Heat. Half of
the sculptures will be displayed at each museum beginning this spring.
As I begin my tenure at the helm of this wonderful museum, I look forward to fostering more
collaborations between MOG and our partner institutions, such as those we are forging with
Chihuly Garden and Glass and ACM. The MOG Board of Trustees and staff continue to
work hard to solidify our place in this community and we are determined to move forward
with our mission of providing an entertaining, educational and enjoyable experience to
you—our members and supporters—every time you cross our threshold.
See you soon at the Cone!

Scapes is a new exhibition of work created by siblings
Laura de Santillana and Alessandro Diaz de Santillana.
All of the work was produced entirely in the MOG Hot
Shop with the assistance of the MOG Team over two
weeks in 2010. Scapes marks the artists’ first artistic
collaboration.
The de Santillanas share an impressive pedigree in
glass. They are the grandchildren of Paolo Venini
(1895–1959), founder of Venini & Co. in Murano, Italy,
and their father, Ludovico Diaz de Santillana (1931–
1989), was director of Venini from 1959 to 1985 and
designed for the firm. In addition to this venerable
family history, both Laura and Alessandro are respected
artists in the international Studio Glass movement and
have enjoyed successful solo careers.
For this body of work, the artists merged time-honored
traditions of Italian glass making with the organic fluidity
of the American Studio Glass movement. The de Santillanas were raised in a world where designers were the
architects of glass works and glassblowers the techni3

cians; success was measured by precision and conformity
to the design. At MOG, where experimentation and
creativity define the work, the artists relinquished control,
entrusting their carefully executed sketches to the hands of
the Hot Shop Team. “During the Visiting Artist residency, I
lived in the magical atmosphere of the Hot Shop,” comments Alessandro. “Along with my personal color magician Charlie Parriott and maestro Benjamin Cobb and his
crew, I was performing the rites of an alchemist—visioning
visions becoming true, sometimes pleasantly surprised,
other times frustrated by certain avoidable but unforeseen
mistakes.”
delineate the Sun installation. Alessandro’s paintings
are based on actual photographs of the sun taken
from space, each with a distinct egg-shaped form at
the center, which respond to Laura’s cosmic eggs and
two linga. The final room, Moon and Constellations,
is a world of white and gold. “Working together was
a total novelty or both of us,” states Laura. “We were
literally swept up in the project, and as we worked at
a fast pace, our two parts of the project, in a kind of
dance, became alive…Amazingly, our projects not only
look good together but feed each other.”
“We are so excited to see this exhibition come to
Scapes comprises four installations, or rooms, based on
Hindu cosmology. Each room includes a combination of
both artists’ work created in a limited, but strikingly vibrant,
color palette. Alessandro’s work is distinctive—his 22 glass
paintings were created from large, color-saturated cylinders
that were slumped open into bold compositions and then
encased in gilded frames. Laura’s elegantly-sculptured
forms, displayed singularly and in small groupings, represent lingas (complex symbols of Hinduism), mountains,
celestial eggs and stars.
The first room, Earth, is defined by colors of black, smoky
gray, yellow, gold and deep red. Alessandro’s paintings
evoke patterns carved by water, heat and wind, while
Laura’s sculpted mountains rise up from the floor. For the
Space room, Laura chose the form of the egg—ranging
from simple, pure forms to some that resemble the human
brain—in varying shades of white. Alessandro’s Space
compositions are silver-toned and full of tiny bubbles.

extending Visiting Artist residencies to create work specifically
for new exhibitions is a hallmark of the Museum of Glass.
These residencies have proved to be popular and enriching
experiences for visitors and artists alike, and it is especially
rewarding to come and see all the hard work and talent from
the Hot Shop realized in the gallery.”

ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Laura de Santillana (Italian, born 1955),
an internationally recognized artist and designer,
continues the Venini family glassmaking tradition.
She was born in Venice, Italy, and studied at the
School of Visual Arts in New York City. Her work first
appeared in the United States in 1979 as part of the
traveling exhibition New Glass: A Worldwide Survey,
organized by The Corning Museum of Glass. Since
then, she has had solo and group exhibitions throughout the United States, Europe and Asia. Her work is
on display in museums worldwide.
Alessandro Diaz de Santillana (Italian, born
1959) is a third-generation glassmaker who honors the tradition of his father and grandfather while
establishing his own successful career in glass. He
was born in Paris, studied at the University of Venice,
and joined the family firm, Venini, in 1981. At the
same time, he began experimenting his own work in
dozens of solo and group shows around the world in
the United States, Europe and Asia. His work is also
included in public and private collections worldwide.

Origins: Early Works by Dale Chihuly
Classic Heat
In honor of the 50th anniversary of the Studio
Glass movement and the Museum of Glass’
10th anniversary, the Museum has organized
this exhibition to showcase works made by
Dale Chihuly in his early career. The artwork
displayed will include transitional pieces from
local collections, historic Chihuly posters from
the Mary Hale Cockran Library and the central
piece, Persian Seaforms, a 33-piece installation recently gifted to the Museum’s Permanent
Collection. Collectively, the works explore
Chihuly’s fascination with the sea and ancient
Middle Eastern civilizations.
In collaboration with LeMay – America’s Car
Museum, and in recognition of their grand
opening on June 2, the Museum of Glass and
artist John Miller have teamed up to create a
collection of large-scale glass hood ornaments
inspired by classic designs from various American automakers. While the sculptures reference the original emblems, the finished pieces
include elements from various makes and
models. The collection consists of nine sculptures, half of which will be displayed at each
museum.

Raven Skyriver
Caroline Madden
Peter Houk
Born and raised in the San Juan
Islands, Raven Skyriver is influenced
by the marine creatures that inhabit Puget Sound. He captures
the essence of these creatures in his
hot-sculpted designs, allowing the
viewer a glimpse into their world and
an appreciation for the fragility of
the balance in nature. During this
residency, Skyriver will make multiple
sculptures of one design (a pod of
killer whales or a school of salmon)
to be used in a future installation.
Dr. Caroline Madden is an educator/artist who teaches at Ireland’s
National College of Art and Design.
She also serves as secretary on the
executive committee of the Glass Art
Society. Her work is included in the
collections of the National Museum
of Ireland, the Ulster Museum (Belfast). Recently, Madden completed
the public works, Lyrical Light and
Cycles.
Peter Houk is a Studio Glass artist,
instructor, and director of the Glass
Lab at the Massachusetts Institute
of Technology. Trained as a painter
and printmaker, Houk incorporates
graphic imagery into work ranging
from relatively small blown pieces to
large-scale architectural installations.
During this residency, Houk will be
making glass “blanks” to prepare
for a longer Visiting Artist residency
beginning in October.

Horizons Conference at South Puget Sound
Community College on March 3. The purpose of
the conference was to showcase exciting career
and life opportunities for young women in grades
6 – 8 who master math and science skills in
school—opportunities like glassblowing!
In addition to glassworking demos throughout the
day, Mobile Hot Shop gaffer Rebecca Chernow
provided the keynote address to a full house of
conference attendees. She spoke about her
experiences of traveling and teaching outside the
country, made possible by understanding the
science behind the art of glassblowing.
Science of Art at Museum of Glass
D
uring March
and April, students
from the Seattle/
Tacoma area and
beyond participated in the Museum’s education
program, Science of Art. The focus of this year’s
program was Color in Glass, which investigated
the characteristics of glass art through the fundamental principles of color.
Science of Art is no ordinary school tour! This
special program offers a one-hour activity lesson
in the class before the students visit the Museum,
taught by one of MOG’s dedicated Museum educators. The program also provides teachers with
carefully-crafted curriculum fulfilling Washington
State learning requirements to enhance the learning experience. Once inside the Museum, students
receive a docent led gallery tour, time in the Hot
Shop to interact with the artists and additional
learning activities. This year they worked with a
scientist and neon artist!
Science of Art is an action packed, fulfilling way
to fuse science with the creative process for
students grades 4- 12. For information on next
year’s opportunities for school groups, contact
Rebecca Jones at 253.284.2137 or visit our
Science of Art webpage.

University of Washington Tacoma
Offers New Glass Arts Course
at Museum of Glass
MOG and University of Washington Tacoma
have teamed up to offer a new glass art class
for UWT students. The course provides a basic
introduction to studio glass making methods
within the context of glass as a visual art material. Students have access to MOG exhibitions
as well as use of the state-of-the-art Hot Shop to
achieve their learning goals.
The program was piloted during winter quarter
with the theme “objects of devotion” inspired by
the intricately flame-worked sculptures in Beauty
Beyond Nature: The Glass Art of Paul Stankard.
Students also work in the Hot Shop where they
learn to manipulate glass to realize their artistic
visions. A second offering begins in April for
spring quarter.
“This is a fabulous opportunity for UW Tacoma
students that will also strengthen the collaborative relationship between our two organizations,” said Larry Knopp, director of the university’s Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences program.
Kids in a Glass Museum? You Bet!
A museum full of
glass might not
seem like the most
relaxing place to
bring kids for family
time, but you may
be surprised. MOG
offers a number of
fun activities and
experiences created
especially for kids and their parents. Not only do we
offer a monthly Family Day, we have great educational
and entertaining programs available every day.
Parents can pick up a gallery
guide and magnifying glass
and take their kids on a glass
scavenger hunt in the gallerooking
ies. Paul Stankard’s Beauty
at Art
Beyond Nature exhibition
A Scavenger Hunt for Families
provides a treasure trove of
discoveries! In the Studio, kids
can make their own art and, of
course, submit an entry into our ongoing Kids Design
Glass contest. And our Hot Shop Team (Ben, Gabe,
Niko, Sarah, Heather and Greg) love to engage kids
and show them the fun in the creative process.

Kick-Off event. The boardroom was the perfect
setting for their 2011 re-cap meeting, complete with a
beautifully catered lunch by Choripan. After business
was completed, the group ventured downstairs for
some glassmaking fun—fusing glass tiles and flameworking glass beads. Each participant went home with
a personal artwork that will remind them of a great
meeting and a great day at MOG!
