Green 900 is a collection of designer’s interior decoration objects. Designed and created to
convey a highly expressive, they represent the perpetuation of a unique furnishings tradition,
suitable to be located in any living space. Home, office, conference and ceremonial rooms: in
each of these environments our furniture represents the prominent characteristics of objects of
applied art, conveying personality and showing its modern taste at its best. Green never forgets
the lesson from the past; nowadays it still uses skilled craftsman techniques in all the phases of
workmanship, the items are rigorously made by hand, in order to guarantee a product of
exceptional quality and beauty, durable in time and to hand down as a valuable objects.

proposent les caractéristiques saillants des objets d’art appliquée, donnant personnalité et

einen hohen ausdrucksvollen poetischen Charakter zu entwickeln, vertreten sie die Fortsetzung
einer Tradition von “kostbaren “Möbeln, um in jedem Raum der Weise des Lebens zu stellen. Das
Haus, das Büro, die zu den großen Ereignissen bestimmten Räume. In jeder diesen Räumen
schlagen die hervorspringenden Eigenschaften von Gegenständen des Kunstgewerbes
vor,Persönlichkeit gebend und den zeitgenössischen Geschmack den Besten ausdrückend.
Green, ohne die Lektion der Vergangenheit heute nie zu vergessen, wendet es noch
handwerkliche kluge Techniken in allen Phasen der Kunstfertigkeit an, sorgfältig handgemacht,

Bertoia left Italy when he was 15 years old. In
Detroit he studied sculputre and painting at the
Institute of Technology. In 1937 he became a
lecturer at the Detroit School of Art and Craftsand at the Cranbrook Academy of the Arts. He
did all types of work and worked for the most
varied of firms; he even designs jewerly. In the
40’s he began to experiment with the furniture
design. He taught at the Cranbrook Academy of
Bloomfield Hills, Michigan where there are no
rigid study plans due to the limited number of
students. Both students and teachers can go to
any lab or studio any time they wish. Each one
learns from the other.
Artists from many countries have worked and
studied there. Bertoia was teaching painting
and metal work. In the small workshop in Bally,
Pennsylvania, Bertoia created a new series of
sculptures with new shapes from which step by
step evolved the outline of the chairs mode of
steel rods. Bertoia states that his design is
intended to create a space which is more
pleasurable and diversified via the process
of combining technical work with creative art.
“Space permeates them”, he wrote of his
chairs.“If you look at them carefully, you can
see that they are made primarly as a painter
and sculptor (metal sculptures). Although he
realized that designing a chair required
primarly the resolution of functional. Problems
(which he found, his chairs are comfortable) he
also visualized the chair as sculture in space.
This is why he took care “primarly of the spatial
qualità, the color and constructed of metal wire

Harry Bertoia
Bertoia ha lasciato l’Italia a quindici anni.
A Detroit ha studiato scultura e pitture alla
Detroit School of Art and Crafts e alla Cranbrook
Academy of Arts. Ha fatto di tutto, ha lavorato
per le aziende più diverse. Ha disegnato anche
gioielli. Negli anni ’40 ha iniziato a cimentarsi
con il disegno di mobili. Insegnò alla Cranbrook
Academy di Bloomfield Hills (Michigan). Qui con
pochi allievi non esistono rigidi piani di studio.
Allievi e insegnanti possono accedere in ogni
momento a tutti gli ateliers e laboratori. Ognuno
impara dall’altro. Artisti di molti paesi vi hanno
studiato e insegnato. Bertoia stava insegnando
pittura e lavorazione del metallo. Nel piccolo
laboratorio di Bally(Pennsylvania), Bertoia ha
creato una serie di sculture con forme nuove
dalle quali, a poco a poco, ha sviluppato le sagome delle sedie in tondino di metallo. Bertoia
dichiara che il suo design intende rendere più
gradevoli e diversificati gli spazi, attraverso un
processo di combinazione per lavoro tecnico e
arti creative. “Lo spazio le attraversa – scrive
Harry Bertoia delle sue sedie – guardandole
bene, si noterà che sono fatte soprattutto d’aria,
come una scultura”.Bertoia nasce come pittore
e scultore (sculture metalliche). Pur rendendosi
conto che la progettazione di una sedia esigeva soprattutto soluzioni a problemi funzionali (e
le ha trovate, sulle sedie si sta bene), egli ha
visto la sedia anche come una scultura nello
spazio. Per questo aveva a cuore “principalmente la spazialità, il colore, e le caratteristiche
del metallo”. Le sedie in filo metallico – esistono
in diverse versioni – sono oggi note in tutto il
mondo.

It was already abvious in the 20’s when Marcel Breuer was studying in the carpentry shop
of the Bauhaus, that he would became one of
the great creative architects of the century. His
colleagues at the Bauhaus kept a very goodopinion of Marcel Breuer because of his courage
and perseverance of founding personal solutions to design problems challenging the almost
sacred rules of the Bauhaus. He developed the
prototype of a residential skyscraper which, in
the coming years, would be built by others all
over the world. Breuer was Hungarian. During
his years of study at the Bauhaus he Designed
furniture for a model home and was co-founder
of an architectural cooperative. From 1925 to
1928 he leaded the carpentry class. His first
steel tubing chairs date from this period as do
his first interior furnishings designed for the homes of Bauhaus teachers.
For 3 years until 1931 he ran his own studio in
Berlin and then began to travel: Spain, North
Africa,Greece, Balkans,Switzerland and Italy.
In 1932 his first architectural project was built:
the Harnishmacher House in Wiesbaden (almost totally destroyed during the war). Then
immigration: first he went to England where he
worked as an architect. “A civic center of the
future” is a pilot study from that period. In 1937
Breuer moved to the USA where he lived until his death. In Cambridge(Massachusetts) he
had a studio together with Walter Gropius and
for 9 years was professor of architecture at Harvard University. In 1946 he opened a studio in
New York. In 1956 he founded Marcel Breuer
Associates together his colleagues Beckhardt,
Gatje and Smith. In addition to single family
dwellings, university and commercial buildings,
Breuer designed a series of exemplary grand
projects:the UNESCO building in Paris, the “De
Bijenkorf” department store in Rotterdam, the
USA Embassy in the Hague, the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, the Sport
Park in Flushing Meadows, New York, the Flaine winter centre and the Bayonne satellite city
in France, holiday apartments and an office
building and a business center in Venezuela.
After the 30’s he no longer designed furniture
but rather tapestries. The outstanding merit of
Breuer’s architecture is in fact beauty combined
with functionality.
Marcel Breuer
Breuer era ungherese. Negli anni venti studiava
nella falegnameria della Bauhaus dove i colleghi
già lo stimavano per le soluzioni molto personali
che egli riusciva a dare mettendo in questione
le regole quasi sacre della Bauhaus. Ha sviluppato il prototipo del grattacielo realizzato da altri
in tutto il mondo. Residenziale che, negli anni a
venire, sarebbe stato. Durante gli anni di studi
alla Bauhaus ha disegnato mobili per una casa
modello ed è stato co-fondatore di una cooperativa per l’architettura. Ha diretto la classe di
falegnameria dal ’27 al ’28. Le sue prime sedie
in tubo d’acciaio sono di questo periodo come
del resto i suoi primi arredamenti presso le case
della Bauhaus.
Fino al 1931 condusse uno studio personale a
Berlino e poi iniziò a viaggiare:Spagna, Nord
Africa, Grecia, Balcani, Svizzera e Italia. Il suo
primo progetto architettonico viene realizzato
nel 1932; si tratta della casa Hernischmacher a
Wiesbaden distrutta quasi completamente durante l’ultima guerra. Emigra poi in Inghilterra
dove lavora su un progetto per un “centro cittadino del futuro” e nel 1937 si trasferisce negli
Stati Uniti dove vive fino alla morte. A Cambridge, in Massachusetts, aveva uno studio assieme a Walter Gropius e per nove anni insegna
architettura alla Harvard University. Nel ’46
apre uno studio a New York e nel ’56 fonda la
Marcel Breuer e associati assieme ai colleghi
Beckhardt, Gatje e Smith. Oltre a case unifamiliari e edifici universitari e commerciali Breuer
realizza una serie di grandi progetti: l’edificio
dell’UNESCO a Parigi, il grande magazzino
“De Bijenkorf” a Rotterdam, l’ambasciata degli
USA all’Aja, il Whitney Museum of american Art
a New York, il centro invernale Flaine e la città satellite Bayonne in Francia e, in Venezuela,
appartamenti per vacanze, un edificio per uffici
e un centro commerciale. Dopo gli anni trenta
inizia a disegnare arazzi. La grande qualità delle architetture di Breuer è data dalla loro bellezza abbinata ad una grande funzionalità.

In the early decades of 20th century Paris became the main centre for the development of
the Art Déco. This new school mixed ideas and
concepts taken from different styles, like cubism and futurism.
Another inspiration for the Art decò it was Diaghilev’s Russian dance. Pierre Chareau (18831950) was one of the most important artists of
this movement. He really was a representative
of the character of the “modern” designer, with
an high interest to the global project.

Nei primi decenni del secolo Parigi diventò la
culla dell’Art déco, forma d’arte che si potrebbe
definire una mescolanza di motivi e di stilemi
derivanti da varie fonti, come ad esempio il cubismo ed il futurismo.
Un’altra fonte di ispirazione per l’Art déco furono
addirittura balletti russi di Diaghilev. Pierre Chareau (1883-1950) ne era uno degli esponenti
principali, forse quello che maggiormente corrisponde al ritratto del designer moderno, teso e
concentrato verso la globalità del progetto.

Charles Eames is one of the creative personalities of the century. He worked in many fields
and always with great intensity and success.
He designed furnitures, he has photographed,
made films, taught and created toys: famous
are the animals made of plywood and the cards
game.
Eames is one of the fortunate few who has
always been able to do only that he want to do.
His great talent for teaching manifested itself not
only in his lectures and conferences but also in
exhibits which he was able to transform into an
entertaining form of information giving.
In all of his undertakings, his wife Ray, who
married in 1941, has held an important role.

E’ considerato una delle personalità creative
del secolo. Ha lavorato in molti campi sempre
con grande intensità e riscuotendo successo.
Ha disegnato mobili, fotografato e girato Films,
ha disegnato e ideato giocattoli tra cui si ricordano gli animali in compensato e il famosissimo
gioco di carte.
Eames è una di quelle persone che ha avuto
la possibilità di fare solo ciò che gli piacesse.
Il suo grande talento pedagogico non si è manifestato solo attraverso lezioni e conferenze,
ma anche attraverso mostre che riuscì a far diventare divertenti strumenti di informazione. In
tutti i suoi lavori ebbe una parte importante sua
moglie Ray con cui si sposò nel 1941.

Eileen Gray was of scotch-irish heritage. In 1900
she had already completed two years of study
at the Slade School of design in London. She
then discovered the workshop of D. Charles, a
painter who was specialized in laquer. She
worked with him and learned all that was necessary for that period of her professional carrer.
In 1902 she went to Paris where she continued
to study design and oriental Laquer. Only 6
years later did she dare to exhibit her work in an
interior design exhibition. She caught the attention of Jaques Doucet, the couturiere who assigned her the task of furnishing and decorating
his new home.
Her first big assignment was furnishing “Madame Levy” in Rue de Lota. In 1922 she started
the “Jean Desert” Gallery in the fashionable
Rue Fauburg St. Honoré, where she displayed
and sold her furniture, screen and lamps.
A long illustrated article in a Dutch Magazine, a
new exhibit and the approval of Gropius, Mallet
Stevens and Le Corbousier encouraged Gray to
take the step toward architecture. After 4 years
of intensive study, advised by the theorist Jean
Bodovici, at Roquebrune on the mediterranean
coast, she built a house for herself; spacious
and practical, with many well thought out and
witty details. Her following works were never
realized. From the 50’s on, her sight and hearing continued to deminish; however, she continued to invent new projects and to experiment
with new materilas. At age 80, she transformed
hayloft near St. Tropez into a summer home for
herself. Shortly prior to her death she had the
satisfaction of a retrospection showing of her
most significant works given at the Musée des
Arts Décoratifs in Paris.
Eileen Gray
Di origini scozzesi-irlandesi nel 1900 era già
studentessa di disegno a Londra presso la
Slade School frequentando, nel contempo, il laboratorio di D. Charles, un pittore specializzato
in lacche con cui serviva per il periodo della sua
carriera professionale.
Nel 1902 si trasferisce a Parigi dove continua
a perfezionarsi nell’arte del disegno e delle lacche orientali. Solo sei anni più tardi osa partecipare a mostre dove viene notata dal grande
sarto Jaques Doucet che le affida il compito di
arredargli la casa.
Il suo primo grande lavoro fu l’arredamento di
Madame Lévy in Rue de Lota. Nel 1922 inaugura nell’elegante Rue Fauburg St. Honoré la
galleria “Jean Désert” in cui espone e vende i
suoi mobili, paraventi e lampade.
Un articolo su una rivista olandese, una nuova
mostra e l’apprezzamento di Gropius, MalletStevens e Le Corbousier incoraggiarono la Gray
a compiere il grande passo verso l’architettura. Dopo 4 anni di studi, consigliata dal teorico
Jean Badovici, costruisce a Roquebrune, sulla
costa del mediterraneo, una casa per se stessa. I suoi successivi progetti casa non furono
mai realizzati. Dagli anni ’50 la sua vista e il suo
udito diminuirono notevolmente, ciò nonostante
continuò ad inventare nuovi oggetti e a sperimentare nuovi materiali. Ancora a ottant’anni ha
trasformato in una casa estiva per se stessa un
fienile vicino a St. Tropez. Poco prima della sua
morte ha avuto la soddisfazione di una mostra
dei suoi lavori più significativi al Musée des Arts
Décoratifs di Parigi.

He was born in Paris where he completed his
studies; in 1908 he begins to collaborate with
some architectural studios – first in Paris and
then in London and Frankfurt. In 1921 he makes
his debut at the “Salon d’Automne” where he
present “a restful corner” at the Musée de Carillon. Afterwards, in addition to exhibiting his innovative furniture, made of metal tubing at the
various “salons”, he realizes several architectural projects like cinemas, decoration of shops,
restaurants, offices and galleries.
Since 1919 Herbst proceeds along the road of
modern design especially doing metal furniture,
window displays and indoor lighting. As far as
his desings for metal furniture are concerned, in
1926 we can recognize his complete maturation
in the rigorous and functional design of his nickel plated metal models.

Nasce a Parigi dove terminati i suoi studi, a partire dal 1908 inizia a collaborare con alcuni atelier d’architettura, prima a Parigi poi a Londra e
Francoforte. Il suo debutto al Salon d’Automne
è del 1921, dove presenta un “angolo di riposo”
al Musée de Crillon. In seguito, oltre ad esporre
ai Salons i suoi innovativi mobili in tubo metallico, realizza numerosi progetti architettonici:
cinema, allestimenti di negozi, ristoranti, uffici e
gallerie d’esposizione.
Già a partire dal 1919 Herbst prende la strada
del progetto moderno, dell’allestimento di vetrine e dell’illuminazione di interni. Per quanto
riguarda il progetto del mobile in metallo si può
riconoscere intorno al 1926 la sua piena maturità con dei modelli in tubo metallico nichelato dal
disegno rigoroso e funzionale.

Hoffmann, while at the Viennese Academy, was
a student of the great architect Otto Wagner.
Having finished his studies he visited Italy for
quite some time. The Italian country house, cubic, whitewashed, with windows cut out of walls
in a irregular fashions, without a doubt inspired
his first architectural works. His intention was
to create the complete work of art and because
of this reason he was costantly searching for
better materials and to strive for an ever more
perfect performance. His guidelines: simplicity,
honesty and accurancy.
His designs clearly evidence his preference for
rectilinear, cubic forms with geometrical ornamentation. For almost all of the houses designed, he designed the interior including all of
the furnishings and furniture.
In the long list of his works one should also note
the austrian Pavillion at the Venice Biennale
and the pavillon for the International Exposition
in Rome, the Garben Cafè in Vienna and a series of burial monuments.
Joseph Hoffmann
Allievo del grande architetto Otto Wagner presso l’accademia viennese soggiornò per qualche
tempo in Italia una volta terminati gli studi. La
casa di campagna italiana, intonacata di bianco, cubica con le finestre tagliate nei muri in
ordine irregolare, ha certamente ispirato le sue
prime opere architettoniche. La sua intenzione
era quella di creare l’opera d’arte totale e per
questo continuò a cercare materiali sempre
migliori per arrivare ad un’esecuzione sempre
più perfetta pur nel rispetto dei suoi parametri:
semplicità, onestà e accuratezza.
Nei suoi progetti è evidente la preferenza per
le forme rettilinee, cubiche con ornamenti presi
dalla geometria. Per quasi tutte le case da lui
progettate si prendeva la cura di disegnare anche i mobili per l’intero arredamento.
Da citare, nella lunga serie delle sue opere il
padiglione austriaco per la biennale di Venezia e quello per l’esposizione Internazionale di
Roma, il Caffè Graben a Vienna e una serie di
monumenti Funebri.

Charles-Edouard Jeanneret took a pseudonym
which made him famous in 1920, the year in
which together with the painter Amédé Ozefant
he founded the Revue de L’Esprit Nouveau.
He had studied at the art school and then he
worked in the studio of Perret, the parisian architect. When only eighteen years old he built
his first house. He was very sure of himself with
advanced ideas regarding architecture and city
planning. The central core of the idea which he
developed together with Ozefant was the concept of a building which could be adapted for
multiple uses, built from superimposable units
which could be used for constructing series of
low cost housing complexes. He describes this
concept as a “frame which is completely independent of the floor plan of the house”. This frame, built with standar-dized units which can be
assembled in various combinations support the
ceilings and stairs.
Characteristic of Le Corbusier’s buildings are
the piles which covery a sense of lightness
while also functioning as a framework for structural elements. The allow for an open floor plan,
ribbon windows for uniform illuminations, hanging gardens and idented facades. Example of
this period are the Weissenhof neighbourhood
in Stuggart and the Ville Savoye in Poissy. Very
different from these structures are the buildings of the “organic” period which began in the
40’s, houses constructed with “catalan” vaults,
ondulatine roofs, terraces built of natural materials: ceramic, stone, brick, sandstone. For these houses he had devised the “Modulor” as a
dimensional unit, a system deducted from the
human body. Examples of this period are de
Jaoul house at Neully -sur-Seine and the Sarabhai house in India. He died in 1965, drowned,
in the coast of the french Mediterranean. There
is no doubt that all of his furniture was a result
of the collaboration with Charlotte Perriand and
Pierre Jeanneret. The collaboration between
them was very close in reciprocally respecting
each others qualities.
Le Corbusier
Charles-Edouard Jeanneret aveva assunto lo
pseudonimo che lo rese famoso nel 1920, anno
in cui fondò a Parigi assieme al pittore Amédé
Ozefant la Revue de l’Esprit Nouveau. Studia
a Parigi presso la scuola d’arte e successivamente lavora nello studio dell’architetto parigino
Perret. A soli 18 anni costruisce la prima casa.
Le sue idee nell’architettura e nell’urbanistica
erano molto avanzate. Nucleo delle idee che
sviluppò con Ozefant fu l’edificio multi-uso a
unità sovrapponibili per abitazioni popolari.
Caratteristica degli edifici di Le Corbusier sono
i Pilotis che trasmettono un senso di leggerezza e, nel contempo, costituiscono il telaio degli
elementi strutturali, permettono una pianta libera, finestre o fascia per l’illuminazione unitaria,
giardini pensili e facciate liberamente articolate.
Esempi di questo periodo sono il contributo al
Quartiere Weissenhof di Stoccarda e la Ville
Savoye a Poissy. Sono molto diversi, invece,
gli edifici del periodo “organico” che ebbe inizio
negli anni ’40: case con volte “catalane”, con
tetti ondulati, terrazze costruiti con materiali naturali, il cotto, pietre, mattoni, gres. Per queste
case egli sviluppa il modulor come unità dimensionale, un sistema dedotto dal corpo umano.
Esempi di questo periodo: le case Jaoul a Neully-sur-Seine e la casa Sarabhai in India.
Le Corbusier muore nel 1965, annegato, sulla
costa francese del Mediterraneo. Tutti i mobili
da lui disegnati sono nati dalla collaborazione
con Charlotte Perriand e Pierre Jeanneret nel
rispetto delle qualità di ciascuno di essi.

The Scotchman Mackintosh, architect, designer, interior decorator and painter, is thought
of an exponent of the “Liberty” school. His very
personal style is, anyway, considered more akin
to the viennese school which developed around
Jospeh Hoffmann and Moser than to the french and belgian art nouveau whose decorative
excesses he detested. He treated wood as a
ductile material and loved to cover his forniture with laqueres which camouflaged joints and
showed off only the defining shapes.
Mackintosh and his friends wanted to distinguish themself from the stylistic confusion and
mediocrity of the Victorian era and in this intent
had the backinf of the English “Arts & Crafts”
movement. Aside Glasgow which hosts his bold
and notewothy School of Arts building, he is little know on the Continent where he had partecipated in the 1901 Viennese Secession exhibit
and the Art Decorative Moderne Exhibit in Turin
in 1902. In Vienna he meets Hoffmann, Moser,
Olbrich and the painter Klimt.
It is during this period that he receives the “Zeitschrift fuer Innendekoration” magazine award
for the a desing for the home of a collector and
the decor for the music room of Fritz Waerndorfer, the patron of the sucession.
The productive years between 1897 and 1905
are followed by static ones, from 1916 to 1918 a
second period of success: then silence. Without
commissions, Mackintosh and his wife Margaret, his collaborator, moved to France where he
dedicated himself to painting. He lived modestly
of his savings and died in poverty.
Charles Rennie Mackinntosh
Viene comunemente classificato come esponente dello stile Liberty. La sua linea molto personale deve, tuttavia, essere considerata più
vicina alla scuola di Vienna che si sviluppò intorno a Joseph Hoffmann e a Koloman Moser
che non all’art Nouveau francese e belga, di cui
detestava gli eccessi decorativi.
Egli tratta il legno come un materiale duttile,
malleabile e ama rivestire i suoi mobili con lacche che ne mimetizzano le attaccature e i giunti
e ne facciano risaltare solo le forme definitive.
Mackintosh e i suoi amici vogliono distinguersi
dalla confusione stilistica e dalla mediocrità dell’epoca vittoriana e in questo intento ebbero l’appoggio del movimento inglese “Arts and Crafts”.
Al di fuori di Glasgow, che ospita il suo ardito e
significativo edificio della School of Arts, egli
era poco noto in Inghilterra. Era invece notissimo nel continente dove aveva partecipato alla
mostra della secessione viennese nell’autunno
del 1901 e all’esposizione Internazionale delle
Arti Decorative Moderne di Torino nel 1902. A
Vienna incontra anche Hoffmann, Moser, Olbrich e il pittore Klimt.
A questo periodo risalgono il premio al “Zeitschrift fuer Innendekoration” con un progetto
per la casa di un collezionista e l’arredo per
un salone da musica per Fritz Waearndorfer, il
mecenate della secessione.
Dopo il 1905 seguono anni di stasi e, quindi, dal
1916 al 1918 un secondo periodo di successi:
poi, il silenzio. Rimasto senza incarichi si trasferisce con la moglie e collaboratrice Margaret in
Francia per dedicarsi alla pittura. Vive dei suoi
risparmi e muore in povertà.

He was born March 27, 1886 in Aachen. In 1905
after have finished his studies he moved to Berlin where he remained until 1907 working as an
apprentice in the architectural studio of Bruno
Paul. From 1908 until 1911 he worked as an assistant to Peter Bahrens. In 1912 he designed
a house, never built, for the Hague collector,
Koeller. In the same year he opened his own
architectural firm in Berlin which he kept until
1937. Originally oriented toward the classicism
of Schinkel, immediately after the first world war
he conceived a personal view which sublimated
“engineering” influenced architecture, which had
a revolutionary influence on the construction of
the period. The more audacious of the steel and
glass buildings designed during the 20’s were
never realized. Mies Van der Rohe belonged to
the avant-guarde group “Novembergruppe” which also had painters and sculptors as members,
all dedicated to cultural renovation. In 1925 he
was among the founders of the architectural
association “Der Ring” which intentionally limited members to ten. In 1926 he was nominated
second president of the “Deutscher Werkbund”
which entrusted him with the general direction
for planning and building Weissenhof suburb in
Stuggart. The pavillon built in 1929 in Barcelona
formulated a statement which became a classic
of the theme “construction for exhibition”. The
“Tugendhathouse” (Brno, 1930) and the spaces
decorated for the 1931 Berlin exposition belong
to the Bauhaus period. In 1937 he took his first
trip to the USA where in 1938 he immigrated.
He was asked to direct the Architecture Department of the “Armour Institute” and settled
in Chicago. Particulary after the second world
war, his outstanding professional activity did not
go unnoticed.
His principle works after 1945: Buildings for
the “Illinois Institute of Technology”, skyscraper
apartments in Chicago, the Seagram building in
New York, a museum in Houston and in Berlin.
Numerous honours attested to the worldwide
recognition of the importance of his work.
He died in Chicago on August 17, 1969.
Ludwig Mies van der Rohe
Nasce ad Aquisgrana il 27 Marzo 1886 e nel
1905, dopo aver terminato gli studi, si trasferisce a Berlino dove lavora fino al 1907 come
apprendista nello studio dell’architetto Bruno
Paul e dal 1908 al 1911 come assistente presso Peter Behrens. Nel 1912 apre uno studio
di architettura a Berlino che mantenne fino al
1937. Orientato inizialmente verso il classicismo di Schinkel, si volse subito dopo la prima
guerra mondiale ad una propria concezione autonoma sublimante, in senso artistico-estetico
l’architettura ingegneresca e dalla quale si originò un’influenza rivoluzionaria sull’edilizia del
tempo. Aderì al gruppo d’avanguardia “Novembergruppe”, di cui facevano parte anche scultori
e pittori, per il rinnovamento culturale. Nel 1925
fu tra i fondatori dell’associazione di architetti
“Der Ring”. Nel 1926 viene nominato secondo
presidente del “Deutscher Werkbund” che gli
affida la direzione generale della progettazione
e costruzione del sobborgo Weissenhof a Stoccarda. Col padiglione costruito nel 1929 a Barcellona riuscì a definire la formulazione rimasta
classica del tema “costruzione per esposizioni”. Al periodo del Bauhaus risalgono la “Casa
Tugendhat” (Brno, 1930) e i locali allestiti per
l’esposizione di Berlino del 1931. Nel 1937 fece
il suo primo viaggio negli USA dove si trasferì nel 1938. Chiamato a dirigere il dipartimento
di architettura a l’”Armour Institute” si stabilì a
Chicago.
Le sue opere principali realizzate dopo il 1945:
edifici dell’Illinois Institute of Technology” e grattacieli per abitazioni a Chicago, il Seagram Building a New York, edifici per musei a Houston e
a Berlino.
Il riconoscimento mondiale dell’importanza della sua opera trovò espressione in numerose
onorificenze.
Morì a Chicago il 17 Agosto 1969.

He has been the artistic director of the Herman
Miller Inc., the important design firm, for twenty
years. He summarized the philosophy of the firm
in the following points: what you create is important: design is an integrating part of the firm: the
product has to be honest; you, yourself, have to
decide what you want to do; there is always a
market for good design. Notwithstanding his importance in the diffusion of design in the USA,
he began his carrer as an architect. Born in
Connecticut, after obtaining a degree at Yale,
he lived for a few years in Rome. In Europe he
met princes and exponents of the “International
Style”.
After returning to the USA he worked as editor
of the magazine “International Forum”. He has
overseen many important projects for Herman
Miller Inc., in particular, a modular system of
office furniture which reflects his architectural
background and training.

E’ stato per venti anni il direttore artistico della
Herman Miller Inc., importante azienda di design di cui egli riassumeva la filosofia nei seguenti concetti: ciò che fai è importante, il design è
parte integrante dell’azienda, il prodotto deve
essere onesto, tu stesso devi decidere cosa
vuoi fare, per il buon design c’è sempre mercato. Nonostante la sua importanza come designer, Nelson ha cominciato come architetto:

vissuto per qualche tempo a Roma. In Europa

Son of a japanese father and an american
mother he was born in Los Angeles. He lived in
Japan until he was 14 years old and then went
to live in the USA.
Both in his personal life and in his work Isamu Noguchi, the sculptor, blend Oriental with
Occidental culture. In his youth he worked as
an apprentice to Gutzon Borglum, creator of
the Gigantic portraits of american president’s
sculpted in Mount Rushmore in South Dakota;
in Paris he worked with the rumanian abstract
sculptor, Constantine Brancusi.
In the 30’s he travelled extensively in the Far
East studying calligraphy in China and ceramics and landscape gardering in Japan. He was
worked with the most diverse materials such as
bronze, marble, wood, granite, paper, bone and
wire. In addition to his sculture, he has created
gardens, squares, monuments and fountains as
well as stage settings for masters of
contemporary dance such as George Balanchine, Martha Graham and Merce Cunningham.

Figlio di un giapponese e di un’americana, nato
a Los Angeles e vissuto in Giappone fino a 14
anni riesce ad unire la cultura orientale a quella
occidentale. In gioventù lavora come apprendista con Gutzon Borglum, l’autore dei giganteschi ritratti dei presidenti americani scolpiti nel
monte Rushmore e con lo scultore astratto rumeno Constantin Brancusi a Parigi.
Negli anni ’30 viaggiò molto in estremo Oriente studiando in Cina la calligafria e in Giappone la ceramica e l’arte dei giardini. Noguchi ha
lavorato con i materiali più diversi: bronzo, legno, marmo, granito, carta, osso e filo di ferro.
Oltre alle sculture ha realizzato giardini, piazze monumenti, fontane e anche scenografie
per maestri della danza contemporanea come
George Balanchine, Martha Graham e Merce

He is the son of a carpenter in whose shop he
learned the trade. In 1911 he opens his own
workshop and studies architecture at night
School under the guidance of the architecture
Klaarhamer.
In 1908 he had already designed his first furniture. In 1919 he joins the “De Stijl” group, an
association of painters, architects and writers
involved in a program of radically renewing
art. Their style took its starting point from cubism and associated itself with a rigid geometric order De Stijl and its program corrisponded
with the international development which were
taking palce. Precursors of “Modernism“ were:
Mackintosh Wagner, Loos, Hoffmann and Moser, in USA Frank Lloyd Wright, in Hamburg,
Peter Behrens.
The De Stijl period was an era of great names everywhere: Mies Van der Rohe, Gropius,
Breuer, the masters of the Bauhaus, in France Le Corbusier in England Eileen Gray. The
Schroder House designed by Rietveld in Utrecht
was built rigorously adhering to the principles of
De Stijl: the basic form is a cube, outside walls
with much glass so that the internal and external
space are one; mobile internal walls. In addition
to the Schroder House, Rietveld built town in
Utrecht, the Dutch Pavillion at the Biennale in
Venice, the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.
In 1928 he was the founding Dutch member of
the CIAM (Congrés International d’Architecture Moderne). In the 50’s he was given his just
due, a large retrospective in Utrecht exalted his
work. He received numerous commisions for
architectural design and for urban planning. He
was decorated with the Honoris Cause degree
from the Delft Polytechnic school.

cubismo e si legò ad un rigido ordine geometrico. De Stijl con il suo programma corrispondeva
agli sviluppi internazionali in atto. Precursori del
modernismo erano Mackintosh, Wagner, Loos,
Hoffmann e Moser, In America Frank Lloyd Wright, l’amburghese Peter Behrens. Quella di De

La casa di Rietveld a Utrecht fu costruita seguendo rigorosamente i principi di De Stijl: la

alla casa Schroder Rietveld ha costruito case
a schiera a Utrecht, il padiglione olandese alla

In 1992, the architect Eliel Saarinen, father
of Eero, immigrated to America and taught at
Cranbrook University in Birmingham Michigan.
Eero worked in his father’s studio. He studied
sculpture in Paris and then architecture at Yale.
He achieved his first big success with Charles
Eames as a furniture designer. In 1941 Saarinen and Eames won a Competition at the
MOMA: they had conceived a container system and a chair made of curved plywood. In
1943 Eero Saarinen started his collaboration
with Hans and Florence Knoll in their company,
Knoll International, which gave work opportunities to young designers. Saarinen is famous for
designing the TWA Terminal at JFK airport and
Lincoln Center in New York.

Dutch architect and urban palnner; he was born
in Purmered in 1899. An exponent of Constructivism he then became a collaborator of J.J.P.
Oud and joined him in the Functionalist movement. He studied drawing at the Royal School
for Advance Studies in Amsterdam and specialized in the firm of Grandé Moliere Verhagen and
Kok in Amsterdam. From 1920 to 1924 he lived
in Germany and Switzerland. In 1927 he went
to Dessau where he studied urban planning at
the Bauhaus. He became director of the Advance Institute of Art in Berlin in 1950. Since 1953
he lived in Amsterdam. Among his most important works there are: the Theosophical Church
in Amsterdam (1926, in collaboration with L.C.
Van Der Vleicht and J.A. Weissenhoe) and the
Van Nelle Tobacco Factory in Rotterdam. We
must also mention the “Cloud Pillar” project; office buildings which were to be constructed on
imposing pillars straddling an important urban

Mart Stam
Architetto e urbanista olandese. Nasce a Purmered nel 1899. Esponente del Costruttivismo,
divenne poi collaboratore di J.J.P. Oud seguendolo nell’esperienza Funzionalista. Studiò
disegno presso la Regia Scuola Normale di Amsterdam e si perfezionò negli uffici Grandrè Moliere Verhagen e Kok a Rotterdam. Dal 1920 al
1924 visse in Germania e Svizzera. Nel 1927 si
stabilì a Dessau dove studiò urbanistica presso
la Bauhaus. Nel 1939 divenne direttore dell’Istituto d’Arte Industriale ad Amsterdam, nel 1948
della Accademia di Arti figurative a Dresda, nel
1950 dell’Istituto Superiore d’Arte a Berlino. Nel
1953 si trasferì ad Amsterdam. Tra le sue opere più imprtanti ricordiamo: Amsterdam, chiesa
teosofica (1926, in collaborazione con L.C. Van
Der Vleicht e J. A. Weissenhoe). Rotterdam,
manifatture di tabacco Van Nelle. Ricordiamo
inoltre il progetto di “Pilastri Nuvoli” Palazzi per
uffici, che dovevano essere costruiti su possenti
pilastri a cavallo di un importante arteria urbana.

Born in Paris, he received his first and fundamental artistic training from his father, an
art expert. In 1905 he enrolled in the Ecole
spéciale d’architecture where he returned in
1924 as a professor. Architect and, at the
same time, interior designer he theorized
research projects in keeping with “modern”
wave of thought which was maturing in Paris as well as in the rest of Europe. In 1924
he entered the Ecole spéciale d’architecture where he presented the De Stijl group. In
1930 he became founder and president of
the Directing Committee of the Architectural
magazine “Aujourd’hui”. One of his ideas
was: Furniture, applied arts, have no technical reason for changing. Is Architecture
which, in general, inspires the form of the
so called decorative arts”.
Nato a Parigi, la sua prima fondamentale formazione artistica la riceve dal padre esperto d’arte.
Nel 1905 entra all’Ecole Spéciale d’architecture
dove ritornerà come professore nel 1924. Arredatore e contemporaneamente architetto egli
teorizza ricerche di tendenze affini al pensiero
moderno che andava maturando a Parigi come
nel resto d’Europa. Nel 1924 entra nell’Ecole
spéciale dove all’esposizione di fine anno presenta tra gli altri anche il gruppo De Stijl.Nel
1930 è presidente fondatore dell’Union des Artistes Modernes e fa parte del comitato direttivo
della rivista “L’Architecture d’Aujourd’hui”. Uno
dei suoi pensieri era “i mobili, le arti applicate
non hanno alcuna ragione tecnica per trasformarsi. E’ l’architettura che, in genere, ispira le
forme delle arti cosiddette decorative”.

He was born on June 8, 1867 in Richland Center, Wisconsin. It was his mother who found the
“Kindergarten Gifts” educational system, which
taught children to draw by using elementary
geometrical forms. His father, a preacher and
musician, taught him to listen to music as it was
a “structure made of sound”.
He left the family home at age 20 in order to go
to Chicago where worked in Sullivan’s studio for
7 years. In 1893 he opened his own studio. The
projects he realized in Chicago and environs
from 1893 to 1903 exemplified a new concept
of architecture. The architectural innovations
expressed in the “Larking Building” and the
“Unity Temple” were made possible because of
technology and new building materials. These
two buildings are the first example of deliberately working with the intent for integrating architecture with engineering.
With the appropriate use of reiforced concrete,
glass, steel and slab structures, Wright ideated
buildings whose architectural feeling coinceded
with that of the indoor-outdoor space. This new
concept of openess of the indoor space - almost of a mystical nature – will pervade all of
his work.
In 1932 Wright and his wife founded the Taliesen Fellowship, an architectural school. Shortly
thereafter he was entrusted with designing the
famous Fallingwater House and the Johnson
Wax building. From 1930 commissions began
to increase progressively as did the might of his
creative genius. The diversity of forms, ideas,
spacial concepts and innovations which gushed
forth from his mind seemed never ending. He
entrusted a group of architects with task of
spreading the philosophy of organic architecture and thus was founded the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation that, to this days, caretaker and
promulgator of his work and ideas.
Frank Lloyd Wright
Nasce l’8 giugno 1867 a Richland Center,
Wisconsin. Fu la madre, insegnante, a scoprire
il sistema educativo froebeliano “Kindergarten
Gift”, attraverso il quale i bambini, apprendevano a disegnare utilizzando forme geometriche
elementari. Dal padre, predicatore e musicista,
apprese ad ascoltare la musica come “edificio
di suoni”.
Si trasferisce a 20 anni a Chicago per lavorare
sette anni presso lo studio di Sullivan. Nel 1893
aprì uno studio per conto proprio gli interventi
che realizzò a Chicago e dintorni nel periodo
dal 1893 al 1909 misero in luce una nuova concezione dell’architettura: in particolare le innovazioni architettoniche espresse nel “Larking
Building” e nell’ “Unity Temple” furono rese possibili dalla tecnologia e dai nuovi materiali. Sono
i primi esempi dove si opera con l’intenzione di
integrare architettura e ingegneria, utilizzando
appropriatamente il cemento armato, il vetro,
l’acciaio e le strutture a sbalzo, Wright concepì edifici ove il senso architettonico coincideva
con la qualità dello spazio interno da cui derivava poi anche l’esterno. Questo nuovo concetto
di libertà dello spazio interno da cui derivava poi
anche l’esterno – quasi di natura mistica – prevederà poi tutte le sue opere. Nel 1932 Wright
e la moglie fondarono la “Taliesin Fellowship”:
una scuola di architettura. Subito dopo egli ricevette l’incarico per la realizzazione della famosa
casa sulla cascata e per l’edificio della Johnson
Wax. Gli incarichi aumentarono progressivamente dal 1930 così come aumentò la forza del
suo genio creativo. La varietà delle forme, delle
idee, degli spazi, dei concetti e delle innovazioni
scaturite dalla sua mente pareva inestinguibile.
Egli affidò ad un gruppo di architetti il compito di
diffondere la filosofia dell’architettura organica:
fu così che nacque la Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation, tuttora conservatrice e sviluppatrice della sua opera e dei suoi principi.
