L’arte come la politica? Pop art and populism. Art as politics? Giovanna Grossato he term “populism” is perhaps on everyone’s lips recently, intended negatively, of course, as it refers to a specific attitude of political leaders who relate to people by seeking to undermine their intelligence, common sense and critical instinct by providing banal judgemental stereotypes and promising unrealizable or superficial things. In short, demagogy. Certainly the association of this word with the art world, and with Pop Art in particular, does not come immediately though the linguistic root is the same. Pop Art is one of the most importance artistic movements of the post-war years. It descends from the withering cynicism of the New Objectivity but also from the equilibrated elementariness of Neoplasticism, founded in 1916 with the “De Stijl” group, composed of the painters Van Doesburg, Mondrian and Van der Leck, and which defined a new formal vocabulary based on the simple geometrical combination of lines and colours, brought together in forms of chromatic rectangles and blocks, thereby realizing the liberation of the natural form. A relation of Dadaism and Suprematism too, Pop Art has its historical origins in Great Britain at the end of the fifties, but then developed in the USA during the following decade and from there it irradiated through the western world. Its main protagonists were Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, James Rosenquist, Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein. This new art form was in sharp contrast with the intellectualism of its contemporary Abstract Expressionism and turned its attention to the objects, myths and languages of the consumer society, and drew its images directly from comics, advertising, newspaper photographs, advertising signs, road sign age and so on. However, the appellative “popular” must not be intended as art directed at the people but rather as mass art, i.e. produced in batches. And as the mass has no face, the art that expresses it must be as anonymous as possible: it is only in this way that it can be understood and accepted by the highest possible number of people, by a society intended as an impersonal consumer system. Therefore, just as politicians today inject a type of low-profile language – one that represents itself in the mass it is aimed at – into the high values that they ideally ought to be espousing, some current art forms (already present from the nineties with the name of Neo Pop) introduce “low art”, commercial and massmedia subjects into the “high” artistic language, while also modifying styles and expressive techniques just like the original Pop Art. These representations are rapidly transformed into goods, into objects that put themselves on the market in compliance with its particular logic and while basing their own comprehensibility on the fact that the subjects of the “works” are absolutely recognisable and familiar to everyone. As a consequence, the artist takes on the role of a simple (banal?) manipulator of images, of objects and symbols that have already been “produced” for industrial, publicity or economic purposes. E poi i soggetti. It is an aspect that does not only and principally regard modern and contemporary art as its absolute interpreters of perhaps inimitable greatness could be found among the old masters, with Titian and his contemporaries in first place (how can be define as anything other than pre-informal the technique used in his latest period, that of the “Pietà” in the Accademia in Venice or that “Marsyas” in Kromeriz?). Today’s multimedia and visual superimposition has considerably lowered the retinal ability to grasp and elaborate images: every now is sharply defined, easy, immediate and ready to taken, consumed and superseded. The very concept of Painting, i.e. of what is “behind the image” even more so than in the figures that makes up its most immediate dimension, is too often attributed today to incomprehensible exercises in pure Alexandrianism, if it is not indeed stuffed with “quotations” without any present or future. The most expressively complete and evident proof of what can be seen in the invention, by no coincidence totally American, at the end of the nineteen sixties of Photorealism, namely a painted expressive ideology which in its total and absolute definition, what we would call “high” today, could compete with and indeed even surpass photography itself, with the cancellation of that “something” which has always constituted the mysterious ambiguity that is at the basis of traditional and western concept of “Painting” (what Picasso defined as “that something that can be found between the canvas and the paint”). And the proliferation of photographic tools, also in the powerful video sense, is certainly the reaction to a torrent of images which does not allow for time, effort or, least of all, reflection. The need for a return to retinal reflection through painting was then resumed and placed in the centre of the artistic speculation of the historical avant-gardes at the beginning of the 20th century (Cubism and Futurism for example). Or of individual and solitary personalities such as in the immediate, and variously different cases of Alberto Giacometti, Chaim Soutine and Willy Varlin; or even and in some ways Bacon, Sutherland and Freud who relaunched and revitalized the extraordinary expressive powers (in our own present it is difficult, then, to ignore the contribution 6 of Giancarlo Vitali or that, rich in coups de théâtre of Massimo Giannoni). Painting, therefore, in which the image grants itself a little at a time, revealing itself unexpectedly and unforeseeably, exalting its evocative and expressive power to the utmost; images to be waited for, sought, chased, discovered, accomplices of light and time, destined inexorably to leave the sign of their passage on those pastes and clots that wrinkle and attract dust just like our very own existences. In his painting and expressiveness which is so “Veneto”, especially in this phase of initial but already defined maturity, Raffaele Minotto reveals that virtually genetic legacy that immediately, beyond any other possible parallel, reconnects him to Titian and to his astonishing visual invention: the granitic solidity of the lumpiness and of the spatula strokes, executed with infallible speed, the highly controlled but yet so seductive use of colour, the definition of images that only reveal themselves with the first glance before withdrawing into the dense mystery of painting ... An impossible linguistic option for the individual-painter to carry out rationally and replicate, but rather the outcome of the choice of the painting itself, of that particular, unique and unrepeatable style that has more the characteristics of the expressive need (innate, genetic?) vocation. I remember with great joy the amazement experienced when I came upon the images in Minotto’s paintings, on the suggestion of the very young Giovanni Gasparro, another little master of that intriguing painted ambiguity. I returned immediately to Titian’s Marsyas and to that painting that is so real, so difficult, so distant from the contradictions, from the toadying, from the gratuitous convolutedness and facileness that are so admired by glossy magazines and curators of eternal miseries. The joy of painting, namely of “something” that does not yield itself, which intrigues and ravishes until it makes you impatient for not allowing you to possess it completely. And then the subjects. Portraits of ordinary people that assume the dimensions of monuments to Humanity: reassuring and cheering, despite the weight of their tiredness and the fatigue of living. And then the views and landscapes, bearers of a panic which is more mystery than terror, the laid tables and the interiors, from which springs forth the memory or the desire for an eternal epiphany of Christmases and Sundays, homes and families, affections, small and large things of simple, celebrative (and sumptuous, why not?) daily good taste. Minotto’s reflections escape from any spectacular attraction as he insinuates himself into the secret heart of reality and gives it back with the magic of evocation, mystery and seduction. L’avvento del piccolo schermo, e poi di internet, 8 9 people's habits but especially undermined man's ability to think in concepts and to reason by imagining "that which is not visible". Like a scientist or anthropologist he begins an experiment that will last months and lead him to zap in front of the television for hours every evening. Total immersion without drawing breath until complete saturation; in that precise moment viewing an unturned channel assumes a liberating value. What springs from this is Shock, namely the smashing, the deletion of the image, the visual stop, which grants a moment of suspension from which the liberated mind can give birth to "new deposits of perception and communication". Technological shock initially comes to life as video projected onto the walls and the viewer inevitably becomes part of it as a shadow without substance. The next stage is quite interesting: the immateriality of the flickering of the cathode tube – the "snow effect" – becomes pictorial material by assuming its own palpable signification, sharpened later by the insertion of pre-linguistic or post-atomic wording; a symbolic human involution for rediscovering the value of the "sign" that returns to being evidence of the presence and passage of man. The end of the transmissions makes possible a vision without boundaries in the vacuum full of imaginative and energetic value in Klein's deep blue. Research into the energy that moves the world: a concept on which the artist is still working today and seeking new ways of expression. In 2012 his show, Shock, in the framework of the Eremitani Civic Museums, assumed a shattering power. It is the contemporary art that enters, mixes and confronts historicized art, but in particular it is a signal to change our way of seeing. The shocks alternate loosely until they lead the viewer into rooms where completely blue frames enclose the emptiness filled with renewed visual and audiovisual silence, the ideal condition for taking ownership of oneself again. Where are we going and what have we lost along our path? Within this question is the human dilemma, the one on which the artist develops his work in research cycles – Autoritratto, Lacrime, Traghettare il tempo etc. – with absolute continuity. Contemporary man is described as the outline of an automaton floating on the bottom of time leaving only slight traces of his passage; but the automaton can redeem himself through the creative action that translates the need to reintroduce the reason and function of art itself. Eremitani Civic Museums – Padua “SHOCK” (photo by Giovanni Umicini) lives and works in Padua www.renatopengo.it RENATO PENGO Transitory presences by Erika Ferretto F or Renato Pengo being an artist means being able to produce ideas, observing the world around us as a thinking individual, experimenting and searching until the achievement of the work in the most suitable and effective manner: from painting to photography and from videos to installations without excluding curiosity for the most disparate materials. In this sense, the artistic action becomes a deciding one, the reasons for which only regard the artist but whose effects can act on society. Pengo feels an extreme need for mental freedom. It is from this that powerful works spring, ones that wrongfoot, that destabilize the observer while seeking to trigger a "neuronal" reaction. In this vein in 1975 the artist created an eloquent triptych in which he brings together three large brains commented by the phrase: "We are no longer human beings", a trenchant criticism that sounds as a warning to seek not the easiest way but the truest one, the one that opens the mind. This work can be defined as an intuition which provides a premonition of what will follow, projecting the artist towards a lucid and clear analysis of our time, the technological one, which is seen as the last great epochal passage. The today that devours everything: time, space, places and ideas, revealing them in the form of images without sense and value, phoney like the excess of information that does not become culture. In this panorama, the artist's intervention becomes the unforeseen and unrequested event that alters a pre-constituted order dictated by the routine of consumption and technology. In the 90s Pengo interrogated himself regarding the effect on our minds of the multitude of consumer and advertising images we are bombarded with from television, the computer and print. This brings into being works like “Separazione” in 1971 and “Germinazione” in 1975 that open the way for the “Architetture” of the years that would follow: clean and primary forms that move freely and lightly in space. Like the powerful ribbon that first develops vertically and then folds on itself and which would become a large 5-metre sculpture at Maubeuge in France (1988) or like the bars that become trapped in the cold vice of concrete blocks. Points that pierce their own skin in works entitled “Proiezione” and “Lacerazione”, making it possible to glimpse the compressed existence of a tormented and restless interiority. In particular, the little “Architetture”, from ‘76 and ‘77, prisoners of concrete, translate the tension of freeing themselves from the material into a contemporary language; the same tension possessed by other famous sculptures in the history of Italian art, notably Michelangelo’s “Prisons” in which the painful twisting of the muscles shows all the anxiety of getting out of the marble. It is the same in Lanaro’s contorted iron bars. A great formal rationality in the eighties, rich in small and large masterpieces grouped under the title “Intervento”, with solutions that are often obviously related to simple geometrical figures, then foreshadow the monumental sonorities of the ample structures in the nineties that are capable, with the same coherence, of sustaining the towering articulation in space like the deep segmentations that move along horizontal paths in a continuous search for a synthesis between the infinity of space and its limit. In a magnet, for example, the presence of a soul is revealed by the fact that it is able to attract or repel iron. But Thales is not the only person to dedicate attention to that living material that we consider to be “inanimate”. In his artistic and poetic reflections Leonardo da Vinci also saw how “the heavy iron is reduced into countless tiny pieces by the file which a little wind can carry away.” The lightness of such a severe, primitive and weighty material was therefore associated with the breath of the wind: as if to say that the essence of matter can be so subtle as almost not to belong to the real world any longer. Or, instead, it can be identified as an insurmountable obstacle for those who do not know the way across: “What is drawing?” the painter Vincent Van Gogh asked, scanning the countryside of Arles. “How to you reach it? It is the act of opening a passage through an invisible iron wall which seems to be located between what you feel and what you can do.” Iron again. Much more than a metal to forge to make rails and machines, bars and girders. Also much more that a noble material that is hidden in the heart of the mountains and that, to become an artefact, requires prehistoric eras, trial and error, enormous fatigue, fire, lots of fire, and water, thought, soot and blood. And therefore it is not strange that there are not many sculptors who work with iron because doing so presupposes being able to recognize that soul that Thales had identified with such certainty. So it is for Roberto Lanaro that he has always had a fraternal relationship with iron: “Iron is a material which has always been familiar to me since childhood,” he writes, “because my father worked it in his workshop.” It is hard to imagine approaching such a complex metal without having a profound, long and precocious familiarity with it. And there is no better approach than that of the workshop. There it is possible to observe, and the fear of the first time is diluted in the awareness of already knowing how to govern the encounter. At the beginning of his career Lanaro used the oxyacetylene flame to obtain stylized figures that never abandoned mimicry, with the transformation of reality into a fantastic dimension: the result is bulls and crocodiles whose body is the flat and heavy one of full metal like dark origami objects folded by Hephaestus. But it was in the seventies that the qualities of iron, its soul, offer themselves in the form of their totality and, for Lanaro, working an original bar or block 14 Tensioni 1991 Ferro ossidato | Oxidized iron cm. 48x40x33 15 MANUELA SEDMACH Un momento di attesa di Marco Stoppa “M elius abundare, quam deficere ” dicevano i latini e l’uomo contemporaneo non è da meno. Today, abundance seems to be a necessary condition for not being excluded from a system that conveniently and with the minimum effort suggests the answers to everything, reducing our capacity for analysis and our level of attention. The illusion of cultural and material gratification obtained with relative ease by contemporary man is like a medicine to be administered daily in order to ensure that the patient does not awaken from apparent serenity and in the crisis of abstinence discover the interior spiritual emptiness that afflicts him. Finding the balance between being and appearing, between the body and the soul, between the spirit and the material, is the target set for herself by the Trieste artist, Manuela Sedmach. A profound cognoscente of the human soul, Sedmach is convinced that the rebirth of the spirit and the search for happiness do not depend on others but on ourselves: “it is within ourselves.” Every effort made to achieve this balance is a transformation, a continuous growth that matures along a solitary path. Starting from 2000 that artist initiated a cycle of canvasses inspired by the infinite and inhabited spaces with explanatory titles: Preparare un posto, Destinazione provvisoria, Esilio bianco. (Prepare a place, Provisional destination, White exile.) While representing the universal character of humanity’s solitary and silent struggle in the search for itself, the transformation of our spiritual and material transformation gains the upper hand in the apparent immobility and dilation of space and time. In this way, the desert, perceived as an empty and static place, becomes a necessary condition for the artist in order to exalt the change and, more in general, the continuous becoming of things, the succession or birth and death, the transfer of energy from one condition to another. Faced with a cyclical vision of existence, the very dramatic perception of death, specific to western culture, is put in question with the implicit suggestion that it can be happily welcomed as an inevitable stage in the course of life. With the series of the Deserti, still evolving, Manuela Sedmach 18 matures a pictorial research project initiated in the nineties which definitively set itself apart from pseudo-figurative depictions in which the presence of man was reduced to a silent shadow without identity. The description of undefined places, relative timeless spaces and ones that are physically inaccessible constitute an attempt to “draw subject out of the picture” in order to reach that condition of visual nothingness and mental fullness that “contains the very possibility of seeing” and contrasts with the saturation of images and explanations of the contemporary. Faced with the primitive unknown proposed by Manuela Sedmach the observers themselves are forced to play for time before making a judgement, to dilate the time of the reply before the arrival of the anxiety of discovering what there is beyond that dense atmosphere of fog that separates us from a vibrant and mysterious light, the sole reference point in a place without coordinates. The artist’s function also emerges more clearly in this relationship with the spectator: i.e., one that shares people’s anxieties and desires and helps them to find themselves. It is the figure of the “stalker”, borrowed from the artist’s beloved director, Andrei Tarkowsky, “an escort who is unlikely to be able to enjoy what he is taking the others to see.” In his latest works, the atmospheric osmosis has become more extensive and closer, occupying the entirety of the pictorial surface. The procedure remains the same: delicate veiling and superimpositions of chromatic material obtain infinite nuances of grey that gradually distance themselves from the underlying black, mitigated a little at a time by the white and by the ochre, the only colours that Sedmach needs for describing an inconstant place vibrating with light. Involvement is now total: the great canvasses approach the observers and suck them in before catapulting them beyond the light, into another “where” in which – to quote the title of these last works – desires are realized. Con il fine di giungere già nei prossimi mesi ad un percorso virtuoso di reciproca collaborazione per ottimizzare al meglio i mezzi di comunicazione e per declinare in modo tematico le proposte culturali su tutto il territorio regionale, pur nel rispetto delle singole individualità, la Provincia di Gorizia, i Comuni di Monfalcone, Pordenone, Trieste ed Udine hanno concordato di mettere in rete le gallerie di eccellenza regionale e di adottare e sottoscrivere il protocollo “Per la valorizzazione dell’arte contemporanea in FVG e per una gestione sostenibile degli istituti culturali”. in questa pagina | on this page Sala espositiva interna | Internal exhibition room nell’altra pagina | on the other page PArCO Galleria d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea vista dall'alto (foto di Elena Tubaro) PArCO Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art view from above (photos by Elena Tubaro) Foto Cartoni degli affreschi di Parma in mostra a Pordenone (foto Alessio Buldrin) pictures of the frescoes of Parma in exhibition in Pordenone (photo by Alessio Buldrin) Finestra sul mare (Armando Pizzinato) 1949/1950 Olio su compensato (CSAC/Università di Parma) | Oil on plywood (University of Parma) cm. 164,5x197 21 PORDENONE Culture is a resource, an investment in the future T o visitor coming to town Pordenone presents itself with all the multiple facets of a modern city with the overlay of all the evocative works left by history, the testimony, in particular, from that area which, ascending from the River Noncello, marked its development, initially as a mooring place for boats engaged in trade with Venice and then as a source of energy for the factories that were erected along its course with an increase in the number of mills and of production activities. Thanks to the arrival of hydroelectric power the town saw an authentic industrial take-off in the textile, ceramics and paper sectors that was followed by considerable economic and industrial development in the engineering, iron and steel, chemical and woodworking areas. For centuries, the affirmation of the entrepreneurial spirit characterized Pordenone and made it an important manufacturing centre and, during the last century, one of the capitals of the engineering industry. Over the last ten years Pordenone has become Italy's second city in terms of income produced by cultural shows and events such as the literary and film festivals, renowned all over the world, that take place at every time of the year: Giornate del Cinema Muto, Dedica Festival, Pordenonelegge.it and many others. Already in the 1500s, a golden century for the town, the city saw the arrival of great splendours with the erection of academies and salons whose presence can still be seen along Corso Vittorio Emanuele – the old Contrada Maggiore – and with the construction and enlargement of the major palazzi in the historical centre, and still in existence, by the 22 noble Ricchieri, Mantica and Rorario families who competed with one another to host painters, humanists, men of letters and poets. Today, with the opening of the “Armando Pizzinato” Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art and the Exhibition Spaces in Via Bertossi, Pordenone has positioned itself as a crossroads and centre of dialogue for the various national and foreign forms of expression. In particular, it is through the “Armando Pizzinato” Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art along with PArCo (the acronym for Pordenone Contemporary Art), that brings together the two structures that are physically separate but integrated in cultural programming and, with their 2010 square metres of space, a real boon for the development of art in Italy, that the town council intends to reinforce not just in terms of the city's image but also as a driving force in the artistic panorama. In the older section, the Galleria d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea, named after Armando Pizzinato, hosts the precious Zacchi – Ruini collection with works by Giorgio De Chirico, Massimo Campigli, Roberto Crippa, Filippo de Pisis, Lucio Fontana, Renato Guttuso, Alberto Savinio, Mario Sironi and many others as well as a conspicuous collection of twentieth century paintings, sculptures, engravings and photographs. At the same time solo exhibitions are staged in the modern wing of the Gallery and concerts, drama readings and teaching activities for adults and children are organized. The exhibition spaces in Via Bertossi host events featuring photography, comics and design, in particular with the staging of shows that pay homage to the great names of national and international photography. The town council is consolidating specific and precise collaboration with those who, more than anyone else, have contributed to defining the city's image and activities in order to consolidate a common identity along with them also through the periodization of short, medium and long-term initiatives and the adoption of a common language. The broadening of contacts with the hinterland and opening out beyond the border, especially with the adjacent regions of Austria and the former Yugoslavia, will be further important and useful stages for proposing events that will lead to the success of the area as a centre of tourism. In this sense, a dialogue has opened between the representatives of local administrators and operators stemming from the need to launch a cooperating and integrated regional cultural system, with a joint analysis of the increasingly critical situation in which the museums and other cultural institutions located in the region find themselves, and also in response to the current economic picture, and this has led to the articulation of a communion of intentions of the contemporary art galleries. With a view to arriving in the coming months at a virtuous path of reciprocal collaboration for the optimization of the means of communication and for defining the cultural proposals in a thematic manner throughout the region, while respecting the individual identities, the Province of Gorizia, and the Town Councils of Monfalcone, Pordenone, Trieste and Udine have agreed to unite the regional galleries of excellence in a network and sign a protocol "For the development of contemporary art in FVG and for a sustainable management of the cultural institutes." nell’altra pagina | on the other page Un fantasma percorre l’Europa (Armando Pizzinato) 1950 Olio e tempera su tela (Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia, Galleria Internazionale d’arte moderna Ca’ Pesaro) Oil and tempera on canvas (Venice Civic Museums Foundation, International Gallery of Modern Art Ca 'Pesaro) cm. 260x300 Ingresso secondario di PArCO | Secondary entrance of PArCO in questa pagina | on this page Opere di Tonino Guerra in mostra a PArCO | Works by Tonino Guerra on display in PArCO Nane Zavagno nella parco adiacente a PArCO | Nane Zavagno in the adjacent park to PArCO PArCO Galleria d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea Armando Pizzinato Viale Dante, 33 Pordenone www.artemodernapordenone.it 23 55. VENICE BIENNALE The Encyclopaedic Palace by Anna Livia Friel I n 1955 Marino Auriti, the visionary (or farsighted?) Italo-American artist, registered a patent for The Encyclopedic Palace, a cake in the form of a building with a hypothetical height of 700 metres. The project, very precise in the calculation of the surfaces and volumes, was to be located in the National Mall in Washington D.C. while its 136 floors were to have contained all the artefacts, the inventions, and the artistic, scientific and mechanical wonders of the human race. Leaving aside the fact that the thought that all the marvels produced by humanity during all these centuries of supremacy over the other animal species could fit into a 136 floor structure, which is tapered moreover, could sound worrying, the idea itself is not bad: often what remains trapped inside the walls or our museums is destined to be forgotten in the same way as when the most innovative research is deprived of its historical foundations, it ends up losing its value and its role at its own time. We can therefore say that the decision taken by Massimiliano Gioni, curator of this 55th Art Biennale, to entitle the great event The Encyclopedic Palace, a genuine tribute to Marino Auriti’s project, is absolutely acceptable, as if to say: art is an immense cultural asset, the Biennale is its great Palazzo, and let us not be led astray by the markets, by the fairs, or by the artists or various degrees of success. The 2013 Biennale really aims to become a wunderkammer of our contemporariness, solidly structured by a retrospective nature that permits today’s creations to pose upon glorious origins and to enrich itself with a complex and mature path. Important, even more so this year, is the presence of national pavilions with nine new arrivals: Bahamas, the Kingdom of Bahrain, the Republic of Kosovo, Kuwait, the Maldives, the Ivory Coast, Nigeria and Paraguay, in addition to the Vatican. Paolo Baratta, the Biennale Director, underlines the importance for each nation not only to showcase their own specific art output but also to provide a mouthpiece for a vitality capable of producing that indispensable exchange between the various actors who tread on a country’s cultural stage. The intentions and form of the Italian pavilion were clarified by its curator, Bartolomeo Pietromarchi, who, at a press conference, explained with satisfaction that the theme of the Encyclopaedic Palace had great affinity with Vice Versa, the title chosen for the Italian Pavilion, a tribute to Giorgio Agamben who, in his Categorie Italiane. Studi di poetica e letteratura, makes reference to an art composed of series of polarly combined concepts, be they tragedy and comedy, architecture and vagueness, or lightness and speed, that are in any case bearers of complexity that crosses through seesawing dialectic relationships. The fourteen artists invited by Pietromarchi to represent the nation assume the role of narrators of the art to constitute “a diachronic atlas of themes referable to our national history and culture: relationship with the landscape, the city and architecture, references to history and myth, spiritually, and the popular imagination and culture.” The pavilion is arranged in such a way as to host six small thematic rooms where, in a two-sided debate, young artists are compared with successful representatives of Italian art: on the landscape 26 Luigi Ghirri and Luca Vitone, on history Fabio Mauri and Francesco Arena, the relationship between comedy and tragedy with Piero Golia and Sislej Xhafa, tradition with Marcello Maloberti and Flavio Favelli, illusion with Giulio Paolini and Marco Tirelli, freedom with Massimo Bartolini and Francesca Grilli, and the link between fragment and system with Gianfranco Baruchello and Elisabetta Benassi. The result is therefore a mixture of generations and awarenesses in this sober and measured collection, curated by the MACRO director whose interventions return again and again to underline the importance of reconstituting of an Italian school of art which, empowered by its own specific nature, knows how to relate an compare in the framework of this important international event. The “vice versa”, on the other hand, alludes, yes, to the balance triggered in order for us to be taken by the hand by opposing figures, but also to the possibility of swapping roles, interactions between the public and the artist, capable of identifying themselves with one another and sparking off those empathetic processes that generate culture. nell’altra pagina | on the other page Guo Fengyi Confucius 2007 China colorata su carta di riso | Colored ink on rice paper cm. 299x69 in questa pagina | on this page Marino Auriti Marino Auriti with the Encyclopedic Palaceof the World Photographer unidentified, c. 1950 - Collection American Folk Art Museum, New York Artur Żmijewski Blindly 2010 Video | Video 18:41 min. In many ways Mario Dall'O belongs to that group of artists who, while not representing a real "movement", work in an entirely autonomous manner around the typical poetics and concepts of "medial" artists, i.e. associated with the "Medialism" theorized in the eighties by the critic and theorist, Gabriele Perretta. This term regards an integrated art in which tradition and media cohabit in the sense that the tradition is updated on the evolution of technology. Dall'O often starts from images from the news (taken from the web or from magazines) or makes use of popular or religious symbols in order to produce a visual and conceptual re-elaboration which, specifically thanks to the technicalmanual drift, opens onto a broad array of episodes in which past and present cohabit, even when there is an apparent contrast between them: a contrast that is never elementary as revealed, in certain works, by an arrangement of objects that recur several times in a different way. This is because they are distributed according to a neo-baroque aesthetic inside highly decorated cornices, coloured cloths, gilded and silvered knick-knacks which only close up reveal their real consistency while from a distance they appear to be extraordinary works of the jeweller's craft. The artist's work can therefore be identified with the articulation of elements: an anthology of "placing in sight" of the things that generate situations and relationships that are continually different from one another. They are created at different levels, producing, collecting and aggregating collective and individual characters, places near and far, kinships and conflicts, within confines which are real and virtual at the same time. Painting, sculpture, video and design are arranged on a single plane, with the cancellation of all hierarchies and, indeed, converge towards a unification of themselves in a continuous "imitation", such as when certain pictorial elaborations suggest the halftone image of printing. Interesting in this regard are the works in the very recent Still life cycle: this is a series of bodies, more often of faces, downloaded from the internet and belonging to anonymous people most of whom have died in violent circumstances and who are now, through painting, reproduced as if they were in fact "still lives", in the real sense and specific to the "genre", i.e. compositions of dead vegetable or animal objects, raised to be emblematic of the frailty of beauty, ready to vanish in life's brief unfolding, victim of the passage of time. These images, reproduced pixel by pixel, magnifying the original photos exaggeratedly, vary one's perception depending on the distance from which they are observed, thereby highlighting the protean nature of the subjects and, at the same time, the artist's versatility. Dell'O actually works with extreme liberty, nomadically, in the sense that he operates by ranging 360 degrees. He ignores the "cage" of style and patent recognisability in the awareness that he is able to apply a specific "brand" to his work, through the abundance of concepts and the specificity of an artisan quality permeated with extreme compositional and pictorial skill which unquestionably sets his work apart. Here Dall'O rediscovers his natural dimension, making of his art an extremely keen scalpel that is capable of plunging into the ungraspable matter of drama in order to restore its sense of mortal ambiguity. And, in this case, the decoration hides nothing but reveals in other light. It is an elegant country home and one of the first designed by Andrea Palladio in the sixteenth century, for the noble Venetian Pisani family. The current owners, art enthusiasts and collectors, are Manuela Bedeschi and Carlo Bonetti who offer hospitality to artists and cultural dinners in the Palladian villa. Manuela lives and works in this stimulating context with the creation of an artistic genre which, at first glance, might appear quite distant from the formal rigorousness of the Palladian architecture in which she resides. Her works are geometrical structures traversed by light or which, in any case, draw a new function from their relationship with light. And there is more: thanks to the luminous propagation, the elements in Bedeschi's installations – consisting essentially of fluorescent tubes or pictorial panels illuminated from the rear by a source of light – abandon two-dimensional realities in order to follow an absolute course released from the support. The first aspect, that of the discipline of the proportions of the coloured segments visà-vis one another and the whole, is one of the founding moments of architecture, particularly classical architecture which, from the pyramids of the Middle East, Central America and Egypt to the Greek Doric temples, gives a sacred value to the "divine harmony of proportions" that played a fundamental role of recovery in both the sciences and in the arts during the Italian Renaissance. For Bedeschi it is therefore a question of reanimating the fundamental principles not only of construction in accordance with the geometrical-mathematical rules that make nature "art", but also of integrating her own works with an architecture which made these values its own for centuries, and of doing so in a contemporary language. This has been the case not only in the Bagnolo villa, but also in Mantua, Brescia and more recently in Verona at the Diocesan Museum of Art in the Church of S. Fermo Maggiore, with a neon installation and, in summer 2012, in Vicenza, in the spaces of Casa Gallo with the “Doppio Quadrato” exhibition: a one-woman show made to measure for the rooms of the apartment of the "La Vigna" International Library, which had been renovated by the Venetian architect, Carlo Scarpa. Accompanying the rhythms of the old architecture, Bedeschi starts off from the façade of the house with a yellow square composed of neon tubes that includes the modular measurements of the windows and string courses. From the façade and from the great luminous square inscribed in it – pervading it but also liberating its borders – the artist's works are then collocated in all the rooms of the house, again with the use of the canonical measurements and their multiples and sub-multiples, a unifying sign between the pregnant reality typical of architecture and the mental and symbolic one of the artist's work. Moreover, Manuela Bedeschi associates the regularity of the forms with the unstable lightness of the neon which, placed inside large Plexiglas boxes, irradiates the colour into the surrounding space. The result is a hymn to the primary element in line with the intentions of the Arte Povera of the sixties integrated, however, with an awareness of today's mutated world. Almost as if to say that the undisentangleably complex world that the contemporary besieges us with clashes with the purity of the idea and its extreme liberty. Bedeschi's installation experiences are therefore inserted into pre-existing structures intended to bring out from them the values of sense which, quite often, make it possible to trace an ethicalaesthetic map, as well as a logical-mental one, between past and present. The good and the beautiful as the ancients would have said. Always active in her land of origin in the Italian northeast, Manuela Bedeschi has also taken her artistic experimentation abroad: to the cathedral of Lezha, to Tirana, and to France, Austria and the United States. Today, there is an intensified interest in her activities for "rereading" façades and a return to painting linked to backlighting the works. Both aspects can be seen in the recent show, “Rossarancio. Manuela Bedeschi da Cleto Munari”, staged in Palazzo Festa Marzotto, the atelier of the Friuli designer who has lived and worked in Vicenza for many years. The painter, journalist and critic who died in 2011 showed that he fully understood "The secret rhythm of musical time" that Carroli expressed particularly in her environmental reinterpretations. Batacchi was aware of it when, in 2009, he curated a great monographic show dedicated to Mirta Carroli in the Castle at Pergine Valsugana. "On that occasion," he wrote, "observing her way of approaching the arduous problem of insertion into the overhanging environmental context, I was able to appreciate the artist's commitment to the planning of interventions in places and buildings charged with history. I got a warning of this the previous year when I went to Brisighella, the magical Romagna town where Mirta was born, to see the show, the "L’alfabeto del grano"; on that occasion I had admired the discretion and respect with which she intervened along the singular raised arcaded walkway, as well as in other sites, enriching the town centre with refined minimalist operations. And I got confirmation of this a few months ago, in Ferrara, where Mirta managed to find the perfect measure in order to insert her own "variations on the theme" among the frescoes and ancient tomes in the courtly Palazzo di Schifanoia and in the Giardino delle Delizie at its rear. The nucleus of the most recent works derives specifically from this last experience: works in patinated iron, conceived and realized for the Venetian gallery. On the basis of this intuition," Batacchi continues in the text of the catalogue of the exhibition at Venice's Perl’A Gallery on the occasion of the 54th Venice Biennale, "Carroli grafted the bearing theme of the "Illuminated Manuscripts" show which was declaredly inspired by the reflections and suggestions accumulated by the artist during the long months in which she was in contact with the visual stories of the pictorial cycles of the fourteenth Ferrara palazzo and, above all, with the precious incunabula of the ducal family [...]. Those expecting a revisitation of the elaborate handwritings, the precious inks, the vivid colours and gilding of the marvellous capital letters, would be wrongfooted. Mirta Carroli lives in the 21st century, six centuries after the half-brothers, Lionello and Borso d’Este. What she has captured from the materials, from the plaster speckled with lapis lazuli, from the vellums and parchments, from the aura or time, and from the great rooms in which the summer cool foretells the frost of winter nights, is the sense of the musical score. Life like music, impossible to 42 Codici di Borso d'Este 1 2011 Ferro patinato | Coated iron cm. 23x92x16 imagine without the pentagram that supports it and includes all of its possible variations. Rigorous rhythms, madrigals without words, as far as pure Mozart-like fun [...]. Mirta Carroli does not propose herself nor does she delude herself about changing the world. She savours fragments and shards of vitality, reorders and reworks them, draws alphabets from them which are then translated into an arcane yet comprehensible language. She unravels the intricate mesh of the worn out rhetorical figures in order to save their original message. She gives us back the pleasure of seeing beauty without misleading explanatory captions. She has accumulated wisdom and navigates in the present. But she works with her hands and with her heart." The critic also noted the artist's substantial professional training, followed seriously over years of intense cultural and technical preparation pursued personally and during her years of study first at the "F. Arcangeli" art school in Bologna and later at the Accademia di Belle Arti where graduated in the Sculpture course. "The sensation of familiarity and elegant formal completeness we feel when we encounter her sculptures," Batacchi explains, "derives from their thickness. Not physical thickness – as her constructions combine the dry figurativeness of Ettore Colla with Fausto Melotti's sublime incorporeal lyricism – but cultural thickness. Behind the page-making skills, the never obvious scanning of the spaces, and the formal balance achieved without any recourse to symmetry, the emergence can be read in filigree of a personality capable of creating a synthesis between history, style and invention." Born in Brisighella (Ravenna) in 1949, Mirta Carroli graduated from the Accademia di Belle Arti and in 1999 was awarded the Marconi Prize for sculpture. She has been an art college lecturer in Plastic Studies and in 1984 began to exhibit in personal and collective shows in Italy and abroad while her works include various large-scale sculptures. | h. cm. 160 Gregor Prugger vive e lavora a Ortisei (BZ) www.gregorprugger.com [email protected] 45 GREGOR PRUGGER Pantha Rei by Alessandro Benetti G regor Prugger (Ortisei, 1954) is a member of that fortunate generation of artists from Val Gardena which, among others, includes his virtual contemporary Willy Verginer (1957) and the younger Aron Demetz (1972). What they have in common is their powerful rootedness in their land, with a vision of art as an artisanal activity and a predilection for working wood – the most "alpine" of materials, both in practice and in the imagination. Rootedness, for Prugger, means above all an intense participation in the cultural life of the valley (and, more broadly, the South Tyrol) and his own personal promotion of choral artistic initiatives. Prugger took part in the Arti Visive group in Bolzano, he chaired the Ortisei cultural circle throughout the eighties and, since 1994, has been a member of the UNIKA group which brings together the main "artistic artisans" from Val Gardena. Starting from these premises, his artistic practice evolved radically over the decades, demonstrating his conceptual eclecticism: if his youthful activity as a caricaturist (for magazines such as Brunsin, FF and Profil) reveals a great interest in the human figure and its deformation from a hyperrealist viewpoint, with the passage of time Prugger rapidly distanced himself from figurativism and preferred a language of radical abstraction. His most recent works, such as the fragments of the Pantha Rei series, investigate the sculptural potentials of the soft wood of the Tyrolese lime tree, modelled using the most aggressive of the woodworker's tools: the chainsaw. The incompatibility between the support, which is very fragile, and the tool, which is extremely powerful, is merely apparent: Prugger explains that where a chisel would let him carve the surface in accordance with his personal desires, the saw blade operates with a logic that he is unable to control. By insinuating itself into the grain of the wood, an anisotropic material par excellence, it designs grooves that correspond to the layout of the weak fibres in the trunk. It is the constitution, logical but irregular, of the natural element that defines the aesthetics of the work, not the artist's reasoning. This approach to artistic practice entails a total fusion between man and nature, actuated surprisingly using a hi-tech tool like the chainsaw. The facility with which the wood fibres disintegrate under the pressure of the blade denounces the fragility of the natural element whose surfaces, when the work has been completed, vibrate with an intense and restless chiaroscuro. Pantha Rei, everything flows: time flows, the blade flows in time through the wood, the natural material disintegrates in time and, along with matter, so does man who is one with it through art. The theme of erosion permeates Prugger's oeuvre like an obsession: Rainfall seems to allude simultaneously to the falling precipitation itself and to the grooves it leaves on the solid objects it pours onto, while the landscapes in Landscape Box and Red Declivity have the precarious consistency of the "pyramids of sand" that punctuate the South Tyrol. On the one hand, the artist participates with a mystical swoop in this ineluctable process, while observing the need to rationalize the immeasurable immensity of the natural phenomena. Rain, landscapes, the reliefs are boxed in an exact and measureable form and the lime-wood trunks are cut with precision into fragments with polished ends. The metal mounts that frame the wood surfaces, not without sober and minimal elegance themselves, are liminal surfaces charged with meaning. They configure themselves as physical and conceptual thresholds creating a separation between the sculpture's mise en scène, a 3D space in which the observer moves, and the metaphysical surface of the work itself. The boxes in which Prugger gives substance to discrete, totally cosmic, moments, lend their hermetic forms to critical contemplation by the observers. They too, through an intuitive process which proceeds from the particular to the general, can attempt to participate in Prugger's art, in its constant tension towards the universal. Open in the rooms of Castelvecchio is the collection of stone works with pieces from the High Middle Ages to the end of the eighteenth century from the main churches and palaces in the Trento area, the Egyptian Section, the result of the bequest from the mysterious Hapsburg official, Taddeo Tonelli, and the archaeological section which illustrates many aspects of the events in the area between prehistory and the High Middle Ages with over six hundred objects. Other very significant permanent sections are those dedicated to painting (which, among others, will include works by Guardi, Fontebasso, Loth, Ricchi and Lampi), wooden sculpture and stoves. The museum houses collections or small bronzes, prints, drawings, musical manuscripts, coins and medals exhibited periodically in rotation. In the near future it is planned to arrange a section dedicated to the Middle Ages and to the history of the Episcopal Principality. The temporary summer exhibitions above all are the highlights in the activities of the Museum which, in recent years, has attempted to stage shows on differentiated themes, ones that have not been explored very much or at all, that would contribute to arousing the interest of a variegated public. The Museum's activities also extend to the peripheral seats of Castel Beseno in Vallagarina, Castel Stenico in Val Giudicarie and Castel Thun in Valle di Non. Castel Beseno was chosen as the place dedicated to illustrating the castle typology as an instrument of war and of control over the Adige Valley. This is the largest military garrison point in the area and specifically for this reason a path was traced here to showcase the ancient weapons in the museum collections. As far as Castel Stenico is concerned, the entire exhibition path was renewed recently in order to give the structure, which has remarkable examples of Romanesque painting in the San Martino Chapel, the function of container for the applied arts: locks, keys, safes, copper and wood objects and old furniture. In addition to these monumental venues is Castel Thun, open to the public since 17 April 2010 after almost twenty years of painstaking restoration work. The harmonious outcome of various evolutionary stages over the century, Castel Thun is one of the most interesting examples of castle architecture, an emblematic location in the history of the Episcopal principality. The manor brings together the lovely stately building surrounded by spacious gardens and a complex system of fortifications consisting of towers, bastions, moats and walls. The most fascinating aspect of Castel Thun is that is has never been uninhabited, remaining over the years as a furnished home, mirroring the family's taste but also the comfort and needs of the members of a wealthy house. The Renaissance, Settecento, Empire and Biedermaier styles live side by side in the rooms: secretaires, trunks, sofas, bedside tables in Empire style, pot stoves, silverware, porcelain, table glassware, weapons, safes, carriages and sleighs as well as paintings from the Bassano school, portraits by Giambattista Lampi, Crespi, Molteni, Garavaglia, Procaccini and Bergler, and sculptures by Insom make this home a jewel to be discovered. T he seat of the bishop princes since the XIII century, Trento's Castello del Buonconsiglio is the most important monumental complex in the region. The old medieval fort, ennobled in the second half of the XV century by a refined loggia desired by the bishop prince Hinderbach was joined in the Cinquecento by the Magno Palazzo, one of the most sumptuous residences in Northern Italy, intended to underline the power and prestige of man who commissioned it, the Emperor's counsellor, the bishop Bernardo Cles. The rooms are decorated with splendid frescoes by Girolamo Romanino, Dosso Dossi and Fogolino with stuccowork by Zaccaria Zacchi. Torre Aquila houses the renowned “Cycle of the Months”, one of the most important examples of International Gothic painted in 1400 by the Bohemian painter, Venceslao. The Buonconsiglio, the main seat in a network of castles belonging to the Province, (Stenico, Beseno and Thun), hosts collections of art, the applied arts and archaeology. Over the last fifteen years, thanks to the restoration work carried out by the various authorities and the works associated with the preparation of the great temporary summer exhibitions, the monumental aspect of the Castle has seen the extension of the visitable spaces and the opening 50 Venere castiga Amore bronzetto | Bronze Giovanni Battista Lampi Ritratto in veste di Diana sec. Superfici decorate dell’architettura) e PFP2 (Manufatti dipinti su supporto ligneo e tessile. Manufatti scolpiti in legno. Arredi e strutture lignee. Manufatti in materiali sintetici lavorati, assemblati e/o dipinti). An "Institute of High Culture" which boats its own specific cultural features, the attention to the "beaux-arts", the stage design, to painting, to sculpture and to decoration, without forgetting that the very concept of "beaux-arts", namely the system through which the arts are historically structured, is subject to profound changes and suggestions that must always be borne in mind and incentivized where possible. ACCADEMIA DI BELLE ARTI DI VERONA President: Stefano Pachera Director: Massimiliano Valdinoci A long with those of Bergamo, Genoa, Perugia and Ravenna, Verona's Accademia di Belle Arti is one of the five legally recognized historical academies funded by the local authorities. The Academy of Painting was founded on 18 December 1764. The Perpetual Director of the Academy was the Veronese painter Bettino Cignaroli. The Libera Scuola Brenzoni for painting and sculpture was established in 1869 promoted by Conte Paolo Brenzoni. On 5 March 2012, with the Accademia di Belle Arti G. B. Cignaroli, the Commune of Verona and the Province of Verona, the Fondazione Accademia di Belle Arti di Verona was established and was entered in the register of Legal Persons by the Prefecture of Verona by order no. 230 of 17 October 2012. The Fondazione Accademia di Belle Arti continued the work of the Accademia di Belle Arti Cignaroli without a break as regards the teaching activities and the award of qualifications that are equivalent to a university degree, in the framework of the higher artistic and musical training system of the Ministry for Education, the Universities and Research. The Academy has a top quality "legacy": because of the professionalism and competence of its teaching staff and because of the talent and selection of the students who continue to believe in our institution. It presents itself as a living institution that constantly seeks to renew itself, to redefine its structures, upgrade its programmes and enrich its teaching 54 THE EDUCATIONAL OFFER The Accademia di Belle Arti has two Departments as envisaged by ministerial decrees: the "Department of Visual Arts" with the schools of painting, sculpture and decoration, and the "Department of Design and Applied Arts" with business design, stage design and restoration. The Academy issues first-level academic diplomas (three years), second-level academic diplomas (two years) and, in the 2012/2013 academic year, the academic diploma in restoration with a single five-year cycle for the courses PFP1 (Stone materials and derivatives. Decorated architectural surfaces) and PFP2 (Painted artefacts on wood and textile supports. Artefacts carved in wood. Wooden furnishings and structures. Artefacts in worked, assembled and/or painted synthetic materials). The study plans approved by the Ministries for Education and for the Arts reveal a very clear choice: Academies differ from the Universities because of the space given to training for design and workshop activities and to the theoretical-practical subjects that they offer; the key to the Academy's success depends mainly on the quantity and quality of the workshops, namely the ability to make theoretical teaching and laboratory activities interact. The degrees awarded by the Academy, pursuant to art. 2, par. 5 of Act no. 508/1999, are equivalent to a three-year and specialist degree and are valid for taking part in public competitions. The Academy therefore offers its students a formation based on pedagogical principles and didactic methodologies of absolute value which are put in place by highly motivated lecturers who are available and attentive to the needs of students and sensitive to their social roles as promoters of the transfer of knowledge to the institution's context of reference. ART LEARN Within the framework of the attention that the Academy has always paid to new technologies, a particular space is reserved for multimedia and remote learning using the Art Learn platform. A virtual environment (AVAC, Virtual Communicative Learning Environment) has been activated and digital learning tools have been integrated and are available in it: this is a real environment of the latest generation and greatly benefits continuously evolving teaching and learning. ERASMUS, INTERNATIONAL MOBILITY The Academy promotes and encourages students' international mobility. In mobility programmes such as Socrates and Erasmus or with specific collaboration and exchange agreements, the enrolled students can spend a study period, attend courses or carry out research activities, and improve their knowledge of the languages and culture of different countries at the Academies throughout Europe that participate in the projects while, at the same time, the Academy hosts students from other European academies and universities in its own structures. nell’altra pagina | on the other page Aula di Scenografia | classroom of scenography Scuola di design: allievi Anastasia Russo, Agnese Bonuzzi, Mascia Antolini, Domeniko D. La sua é una scultura antinaturalistica, i suoi volumi sono astratti, e pervasi da toni lirici e musicali. Alex Pergher è nato a Bressanone (1955). Pittore, grafico, ceramista, e gallerista d’arte, vive e lavora a Rio di Pusteria (BZ). Espone in mostre personali e colletive in Italia e all’estero dal 1975. Foto di Matthaeus Kostner He attended the Fine Arts Academy of Florence and the Academy of Fine Arts of Brera from which he graduated with honours and at Barnet and Design High School in London. His is anti-naturalistic sculpture in which the volumes are abstract and pervaded by lyrical and musical tones. Flavio Senoner doesn’t dwell on the simplicity of the geometrical line, but he combines it with a research on new forms and new meanings, maybe hinting to some totemic and primordial meanings in line with the tendencies of contemporary sculpture. The purity of the form is complemented by a veil of colour, so as to give the form warm and brilliant variations of nuances, from red to bright yellow, from blue to deep green and so on. Whether they are made in a small and petit or large size, these works always stress their monumental aspect. The next exhibition in the LCC SulzbachRosenberg Gallery in Nürnberg / Germany will be inaugurating an 20 of september 2013. (Marcello Palminteri) Enthusiasts will know Stefan Anton Reck for his activities as a conductor engaged with the greatest orchestras and in the most celebrated theatres in the world. Often to be found in the Triveneto regions where he has conducted in the Fenice in Venice (Richard Strauss's Daphne) and in the Teatro Verdi in Trieste (Wagner's Ring) today Reck is one of the most appreciated interpreters of Mahler and of the composers of the Secord School of Vienna (Berg, Schönberg, Webern). If he is famous for his presence on the podium, virtually no one is familiar with his passion for art. The gestural expressiveness entirely borrowed from music, from the conductor's gestures, is transformed in Reck's pictorial works into signs that follow rapidly perceived structures and rhythms. The titles reveals their intellectual provenance: “La voix humaine”, “Winterreise” and “The rite of spring”, and the moving “Im Andenken an Mauro Bortolotti”, dedicated to the composer who died recently, in which the stroke and material have the capacity to describe the density of his music visually. Monument to the Ceramist: The Decorator works by the sculptor, Severino Morlin Nove in the Vicenza Province is the Land of Ceramics and for some months has been a monument to its most sublime tradition: ceramics and the Decorator in particular. It is famous all over the world for its decorations inspired by nature, the flowers we all admire: a realism that it is still difficult to emulate today. As well as being a painter and ceramist, Severino Morlin is a sculptor who has reached the zenith of his output with this work, with particular mastery in rendering physiognomy and the profound expressions of the face, and he displays an exceptional synthesis in the compositional interpretation and skill from a technical standpoint. The choice of material, bronze, meets the need to opt for a material that lasts eternally, one that can be used outdoors without being affected by it and, indeed, taking on a particular patina over time that changes and gains strength as the years pass. Severino Morlin's “Il Decoratore” can therefore be included among the greatest figurative expressions of our time, a masterpiece which honours Nove and the ceramic tradition. Retrospettiva. Retrospective. The show, organized in collaboration with the Magnum Photos agency and curated by Michael Koetzl, is a second review which recounts the history and personalities of the twentieth century in about two hundred shots by the great Swiss photographer, Renè Burri. In his work, Burri covered the wars in Korea and Vietnam and the Cuba crisis with the United States and portrayed some of the most influential personalities of the XX century: of extraordinary interest are his reportages on Picasso at work, Le Corbusier and Giacometti. His is the renowned 1963 portrait of Che Guevara with the cigar between his lips. Burri is considered to be one of the great photo reporters, especially because of the uniqueness of his gaze: though his work was in contact with the violence of the war and the desperation of victims he always avoided crude tragic images and, as a scholar of Burri wrote: "there is not one photograph that does not suggest the possible existence of a more human world." What always interested him in his work was to be able to grasp the moment in which ideas are born or utopias die, the lives lived. For others, enthusiasts of vintage cars and, perhaps, lovers of the myth of Tazio Nuvolari, it is a precious object that has become part of the legend. The only thing that is known is that it stayed in the United States and this is the only thing we are certain of until the passion and flair of a great collector suggested to Luciano Nicolis, founder of the museum, to head for the USA and bring back the Vanderbilt Cup, a great sports trophy, a marvellous work of art and a milestone in the history or motor racing. Robert Motherwell: the early collages. From 26 May to 8 September, the Peggy Guggenheim Collection is presenting Robert Motherwell: i primi collages, curated by Susan Davidson. The show focuses on the papiers collés produced by Robert Motherwell (19151991), and on the works on paper associated with them, created during the decade from 1941 to '51. With fifty works or so, the exhibition is also pays homage to Peggy Guggenheim, among the first patrons of this artist who was one of the leading exponents of American Abstract Expressionism. Thanks to the encouragement and under the tutelage of Robert Matta, the Chilean surrealist émigré, Motherwell described the discovery of the papier collé technique as "the greatest among our [artistic] discoveries." Cutting, tearing and spreading layers of glued paper, Motherwell brings the tumult and violence of the modern world onto the stage and makes himself a new and original mouthpiece for American art after the Second World War. The artist produces both collages of abstract figures as well as pure abstractions and, in 1952, the surrealist influences that predominated in his early creations definitively gave way to his more mature style, firmly rooted in Abstract Expressionism. Precious details A Rembrandt for $900, an ink drawing by Matisse for $1250 or a Picasso for $450, apparently original and sold on the internet. The news, published by the New York Times and reported at Exibart last autumn obviously panicked countless galleries and online auction houses. Véronique Wiesinger, senior curator of the Alberto Giacometti Foundation in Paris, declares that she discovered over 2,000 false Giacomettis offered as authentic on one website alone. The foundation spent over 40% of its budget to monitor these cases of counterfeit works in 2011, 15% up on the previous five-year period. Along with the heirs of Picasso who, along with Giacometti, is the artist most targeted by forgers, the Foundation has also established the International Union of Modern and Contemporary Masters to promote legal protection against the circulation of artworks that mimic authentic ones. This is also because in recent years the internet has extended enormously into the art market and concealed countless bogus works in the middle of original works. The most common fakes are unauthorized reproductions that breach the artist's rights or, if the reproduction was authorized, a false signature of the artist is added to transform a simple poster into a costly limited edition. It seems, in short, that those who sell forgeries online are not feeling the crisis. Unconscious accomplices are the buyers who, curiously enough, are more concerned that the works be packaged with care and be delivered by the established date! Their personalities, as expressed through their craft, is the essence of the exhibition. All the artists design their own space according to their artistic sensibilities as well as their own unique worldviews. Combined forms, complex subjects and overlapping projects exist side-byside with more traditional modes of artistic expression. For instance, a room with classic panel art borders on a performance art action room; video installations, photography and concept themed collages are shown next to classical sculptures. The intensity of the works, their variety and originality, promise the viewer a unique tour through the contemporary South Tyrolean art scene. As Hartwig Thaler, the curator of the exhibition says "The architectural and military-historical fortress of Franzensfeste resonates with the work and becomes an exciting stage for the passion and fervor and depth and vitality of the exhibited contemporary art. Torre Civica: Allestimento in occasione dell’inaugurazione lo scorso 8 dicembre 2012 The initiatives organized by the Museo Casa Giorgione continue this summer in collaboration with leading partners including the “Agostino Steffani” Conservatory of Music and the association, Amici dei Musei e dei Monumenti della Castellana e di Castelfranco. Between 19 and 23 June the Museum is opening its doors to the world of photography with a show by Guido Guidi on Carlo Scarpa's Tomba Brion at San Vito di Altivole: the show can be visited at the Museo Casa Giorgione until the beginning of August. Another key summer event in the town will be the contemporary sculpture show (18 May – 18 August 2012) which will open the "Arte in Torre" review, an initiative intended to return the spaces of Castelfranco Veneto's Torre Civica to the public. The town council's aim is to exploit the tower also be using it as a space for hosting high-quality artistic events. This explains the first exhibition which will open in May, dedicated to five artists of national and international fame, (Marco Bernardi, Graziano Pompili, Bruno Raspanti, Claudia Steiner and Angelo Zennaro) who will each interpret a floor of the Tower in their own way using materials such as wood, iron, lead, terracotta, ceramic, marble and glass, in dialogue with an extremely fascinating environment. This is thanks to a spatial and temporal reading (from the origins of the first settlements to contact with the Roman world in the lands of the Veneto, Friuli Venezia Giulia and Trentino), that brings together all the knowledge acquired over the years and integrates it with the most recent archaeological discoveries and the latest studies on the subject. In addition to the complexity and unquestionable scientific value of this cultural operation, the exhibition will also be particularly attractive for the younger public with its particular layout which includes multimedia stations, sensorial effects and the reconstruction of a home, a sanctuary and a funeral mound. Educational paths and workshops are also planned. Ugo Valeri, defined as the Italian Toulouse Lautrec because of the affinity of their lives and the speed of their strokes, will be the protagonist of the deepest anthological review ever dedicated to him just after the hundredth anniversary of the death which truncated his life at only thirty-seven when he fell from a balcony at Palazzo Pesaro in Venice. Commenting on his passing, Arturo Martini wrote to Ugo's brother, the poet Diego Valeri, “For all of us, your brother was a trumpet call: the call of the new morning." The Culture and Civic Museums Office of Padua Council, along with the Banca di Credito Cooperativo di Piove di Sacco (his birthplace), are dedicating a wide-ranging anthological show curated by Virginia Baradel and Federica Luser, with the direction of Davide Banzato. Over one hundred of his works, some previously unseen, will be on show and will be compared with those of other protagonists of Italian painting at the end of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth, a season during which Valeri was an effervescent star. The exhibition was accompanied by a catalogue published by Edizionitrart complete with historical-critical studies examining a figure in the history of art who merits new reflections, through targeted research and investigations. This theme of fantastic animals is the protagonist of the summer exhibition, "Sangue di drago, squame di serpente: animali fantastici e reali al Castello del Buonconsiglio” ("Dragon's blood, serpent's scales: fantastic and real animals in the Castello del Buonconsiglio"), organized in collaboration with the National Swiss Museum in Zurich, which will be held from 10 August 2013 in the Castle itself. It is a curious show that follows the history of art from antiquity to the nineteenth century with countless loans from international museums, including magnificent paintings by Titian and Tintoretto. Sculpture, painting, architecture and drawings recount the animal world, fruit of man's fantasies and fears. The exhibition will have a section at the Rocca in Riva del Garda (MAG) entitled «Mostri smisurati e creature fantastiche tra i flutti» ("Immense monsters and fantastic creatures among the waves"), at which mainly sixteenth century works will be on show, illustrating the fantastic creatures and mythical animals that lived in the waters of the lakes and seas in the imagination of olden days. At 50 years from his death and 110 years from his birth, Mart will be recalling the work of Adalberto Libera with an exhibition curated by Nicola Di Battista. The exhibition will flank the Architecture section of the show, La magnifica ossessione, which will include models of countless important works by Adalberto Libera, such as Villa Malaparte in Capri, Le Scuole Sanzio in Trento, and the Palazzo delle Poste and the Palazzo dei Congressi in Rome. In this way, the two shows offer a precious occasion for getting to know the work of this architect from Villa Lagarina. Adalberto Libera put his mark on Italian rationalist architecture with a highly recognizable style. His pioneering cultural work as a founder of Gruppo 7 and the results of his collaboration with Mario De Renzi during the "Roman period" in the thirties led Adalberto Libera to play a starring role in the diffusion of Italian architecture around the world. The Liceo Artistico “G. Sello” was established in Udine in 1959 as an Art School teaching the Art of Furniture and the Art of Metal. It later added the Art of Fabrics and Carpets, of Advertising Graphics and Photography. In 1963 the School became the ISTITUTO STATALE D’ARTE and in 1982 it took the name of the master cabinetmaker, Giovanni Sello, and continued to evolve. Starting from 1995/96, the Institute activated its 'Michelangelo' experimental section, convinced that art education must be provided on the broadest possible humanistic, scientific and technological bases. The School, always rooted in the land in which it operates, has remained firmly convinced over the years that "making art" cannot be separated from a broad cultural dimension and interdisciplinary experimentation. Over the years the Institute has offered diversified teaching paths and integrated the operating and theoretical approaches in order to give students access to the university and the world of employment. Today, the LICEO ARTISTICO has absorbed the specializations already present in the Art Institute and has activated the Figurative Arts, Graphics, Stage Design, Architecture and Environment, Audiovisuals and Multimedia, and Design (Industrial and Fashion) areas. “EXTEMPOREBARCOLINA” EXHIBITION The third edition of the "EXTEMPOREBARCOLINA" show was completed on the occasion of the "BARCOLANA 44" event on 21 February last in Trieste. This was organized by the Liceo Artistico "E.U.Nordio" and by the Società Velica of Barcola and Grignano and was sponsored by the Office of the Culture Area's Cultural Projects Promotion Service of Trieste Council which also made the prizes available, with the contribution of the Province of Trieste, Office of Active Labour Policies, Training Policies and Social Cooperation along with the sponsors, "illycaffè Spa" and "Canvas". Prizes were awarded to the selected works by the participants in the drawing and painting competitions, dedicated to the students of the art school and to the special section of pupils in the middle schools of the Trieste province and of the "BARCOLANAIMMAGINE" photography competition. The competitors drew and painted places they were familiar with and experienced by interpreting the theme "The colours of the sea". Various techniques were chosen and gave life to the emotions aroused by the sea around Trieste through the expressive skills acquired. The photography theme was “Immagini della città durante la Barcolana” for which the participating works created a polyhydric visual message, the sum of lots of young eyes which acutely observed and penetrated like photo reporters to artistically describe and observe a crowd and a cosmopolitan city enjoying the event. The project, spread over the school year and focussing on the theme of human rights, came to a climax during the week from 18 to 22 February last when the Greek, Spanish, Polish and Lithuanian students came to Italy. Apart from the unmissable visits to Ferrara and Venice, the young people spent an entire morning at the Castelmassa school: after being welcomed by the director, Maria Elisabetta Soffritti, and a visit to the school, the students were divided into groups and, using English as the lingua franca, they carried out various activities on human rights and on the stereotypes with which foreigners are identified. Finally, all the groups collaborated in the Fashion Design Workshop to devise T-shirts with the logo of the event to be produced by the Munari students themselves. The school also has contacts with businesses in the area and promotes important initiatives which highlight the qualities and creativity of the students. In the framework of its didactic-formative activities linked to the path for the consolidation of its autonomy and the self-esteem of students, of their active participation in the life of the area and of their assumption of responsibility with regard to artistic events, Fanoli created an advertising poster for the town of Cittadella, in the form of a competition, to promote the fortified systems for which the restoration works have just been completed. The competition saw the involvement of a large number of students and, in order to reward the commitment and creativity demonstrated during the planning stage, there will be an exhibition in June of all the works in a venue made available by Cittadella Council. Fanoli also reaches out to its hinterland with creative activities in which the students will be the stars of Gironotte 2013, the festival or arts and music at Piazzola sul Brenta with works inspired by Alice in Wonderland. The Selvatico Liceo, founded almost 150 years ago in 1867, has been housed in the premises of the old Jappelli abattoir since 1910. In 2006, after working for three years during which the staff collected and catalogued the works created by the students during these 150 years, a HISTORICAL EXHIBITION of the school was organized with the participation of the City Council and Provincial Government, a show that was staged in the prestigious spaces of the Palazzo del Monte di Pietà and in the “Rotonda”, as well as in the broad corridors of the old Jappelli building. With the high school reform, the Liceo Selvatico became a Liceo Artistico and the Art Institute's specializations flowed into new sectors: Architecture and Environment, Figurative Arts – Painting, Figurative Arts – Sculpture, Fashion and Fabric Design – Jewellery Design – Stage Design. During this period of change, we have been engaged in the construction of a new Liceo Artistico which offers our students a solid cultural basis that develops the aspects of creativity and design which, according to tradition, will be assessed in our well-equipped specialized workshops and, in terms of innovation, by IT tools. Contemporary society communicates principally with images and visual language is widespread in public and private places. Today the images make use both of traditional architectural, pictorial and sculptural artistic techniques and of more innovative technologies that are capable of interacting with all the other languages. Padua's Liceo Artistico "Modigliani" promotes training in the general skills in the main disciplinary frameworks and, in a specific manner, the essential ones for communicating using visual language in every sector. The preparation acquired allows young people to undertake university studies in every area. Furnishing means looking after places to render them appropriate for citizens' lives. The FERM”A”RTE” project, promoted by Liceo Modigliani and backed by Padua Council and the APS, allowed students to measure themselves with a typical contemporary urban furnishing project and put the skills acquired in various disciplines into play in a synthesis made possible by interdisciplinary knowledge and ability. The projects for the shelters for the new city metro, already presented in the Sala della Gran Guardia, have been created and renewed in the last two years. The school's educational goal is to transmit that culture underlying all successful projects and communications. To achieve this end, the school seeks to trigger interactions between the new communicative possibilities offered by digital technologies and artistic and design skills. With this in mind the workshops are supported by multimedia classrooms and laboratories equipped with new technologies. The guided use of a range of expressive techniques – from basic techniques to advanced ones – constitutes an occasion for an intensive use of tools and equipment. The scholastic ambience is constantly put into a close relationship and interchange with external professional realities and all the specialized sections participate periodically in regional and national competitions promoted by industries and other bodies, and in events, conventions, projects, seminars and shows that promote the students' professionalism and their insertion into the world of employment. Since 1970, right in the heart of the old town centre, the state art institute of Treviso has been excellently carrying out its function as a focal point for art and culture in order to meet the need in the Treviso district to provide educational courses in the sector of the visual, decorative and architectural-environmental arts, including the provision of a series of events, encounters regarding art and architecture, cycles of conferences dedicated to students in their final years and art exhibitions organized in the schools gallery annexe. This year the projects in the various disciplinary areas included one with the participation of experimental class 4B and experimental classes 4B and 5B and their participation in a competition for ideas for the creation of a commemorative plastic panel for the victims of the concentration camp at Monigo (TV) which was won by the student Debora Possamai of experimental class 4B. Of note among our institute's many projects is participation at the Venice Biennale's 4th International Youth Carnival which this year was entitled “Il leon musico”. Our presence has been significant right from the first edition: all of 13 classes with 180 students, 15 teachers of various subjects and 4 technical assistants. The theme stimulated the production of various works: a theatre noir performance entitled “La sinfonia dei sogni discordi”, a workshop-performance dressed in sound; the installation “The white toys symphony” (a column of toys recovered from abandonment and painted white); and the “Core-rugato” installation (a weave of red industrial tubes with a flashing light to recall the primordial rhythm). Of particular interest were another two installations, “Tende sonore” a series of modules composed of recycled elements such as cans, cutlery, shells, bamboo, Lego, etc. to form a sort of new Russolo-type Intonarumori; and the “Melodie ceramiche”, a series of glazed terracotta pipes arranged like a sound wave that could be played with a wooden stick. The students also supported the workshops proposed by the Biennale. An emblematic case because of its resonance at national level is that of ILVA in Taranto. The problem has reached an extremely high level of criticality to the point that it is impossible to see possible mediations between the need to reclaim the environment in the city of Taranto and the closure of the factory with the consequent job losses for thousands of workers in an area that suffers dramatically from employment opportunities. A similar situation can be found here in the Venice area as there is an industrial zone at Marghera with characteristics similar to those in Taranto: highly pollutant industries without any other possibility for the environment other than closure. Our students (class 4E under the guidance of the teacher of Pictorial Disciplines, Maurizio Favaretto) have worked on the theme with the creation of posters that imagined the LEGAMBIENTE environmental organization to be our client. What is exciting is that the organization saw the works and embraced the idea and made it available in order to render the question official. The research regarded the study, analysis and survey of the Church of S. Maria in Valle in Schio. The multidisciplinary activity was developed in History of Art, Architectural Surveying, Plastic Disciplines and Cataloguing Cultural Assets, all flowing into a single result exhibited last year. An important and precious encounter with the FAI (Italian Environment Fund) took place at the beginning of the scholastic year with delegates from FAI Vicenza: Prof. Giovanna Rossi da Schio de Kreutzenberg and Daniela Piazza who immediately grasped the validity of the work and encouraged us to continue and press ahead towards the exhibition at Palazzo Toaldi Capra with the support of Schio Town Council. The new cultural and educational approach of "De Fabris" covers 6 specializations: Figurative Arts, Architecture and Environment, Design, Graphics, AudiovisualMultimedia and Stage Design. The reinforcement of the theoretical subjects, introduced by the Gelmini reform, is balanced in the schools educational gamut by a series of projects linked to artistic practice intended as technical and creative capacity. Knowing, imagining, creating and making: these are the features that define a solid but flexible preparation, perfectly in line with the current demands of society and the world of employment. The balance between the linguistic, scientific and artistic frameworks offers young people a series of experiences that are capable to arousing "curiosity", an indispensable support for growth. The school's solid cultural base, on the other hand, makes it possible through the specific experiences of the specializations to educate young people to be particularly flexible and elastic as requested today by the job market and by a complex environment in continuous change. It undertakes to form aware and responsible citizens through artistic education too. After an initial common preparatory two year part, the Liceo Artistico offers students the option of choosing from seven sections: architecture and environment; figurative arts; audiovisual and multimedia; industrial design and furnishing; fashion design; graphics; stage design. Verona's Liceo Artistico creates countless projects in its surroundings in collaboration with public bodies, associations and industry.
