stata alternativa per tutti al rientro a piedi, camminando in mezzo ad una fiumana di persone d’ogni età, sesso e religione che cantava e ballava, facendo
esplodere anche qualche mortaretto di troppo: una celebrazione spontanea al
confronto delle quali l’euforia italiana per la vittoria mondiale del 2006 appare poca cosa. Uno episodio su tutti: il gioioso assalto ad un pullman vuoto
su cui si credeva erroneamente fosse la squadra indiana, di ritorno dal campo
in albergo.
Per l’India, cui mancava il titolo mondiale da 28 anni, c’era bisogno di questa celebrazione dello sport più amato nel più popoloso angolo del globo,
per ricordare al mondo la sua presenza, forse ingombrante e scomoda ma
sicuramente ormai imprescindibile, come grande potenza mondiale non solo
nel cricket ma anche a livello di sviluppo economico ed industriale. Un fatto
questo che dovrebbe far riflettere non poco l’Occidente.

India would fizzle out. But in came the always under praised Gautam Gambhir who,
first with young Virat Kohli and then with captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, turned the
tables around, successfully allowing his team to complete the chase with ten balls to
spare in a jam-packed stadium that had been enjoying the sweet taste of victory since
at least half-an-hour. After the match, amidst the unbridled celebrations triggered by
the Indian victory, there was no alternative but to walk back to the hotel, snaking
past an exuberant crowd of people of all ages, gender and religions who were singing and dancing with joy, firing too many firecrackers for comfort: a celebration so
spontaneous and joyous as to pale the euphoria felt in Italy for its victory in the 2006
football world cup. An episode may help to illustrate the climate: an empty coach
was joyously assaulted because it was erroneously believed that the Indian team was
aboard on its way back to the hotel.
India – whose only World Cup title goes back 28 years when it won under the captaincy of Kapil Dev – needed this event, celebrating the most loved sport in the most
populated corner of the globe, to remind the world of its role as a world power not
only in cricket but also as an economic and industrial powerhouse. Indeed, a role that
may even appear to be too domineering and unwieldy at times but which, nevertheless, should give the west something to think about.

his time, though, something went missing from the 2011 razzmatazz because
Pakistan – semi-finalist on the field – was unable to participate as an organising
country, alongside Bangladesh, India and Sri Lanka, as a consequence of the security
issues that had dramatically flared following the terrorist attacks on the Sri Lankan
touring side’s bus on the way to the Gheddafi stadium of Lahore in March 2009.
After 49 not always exciting matches, the 2011 Cricket World Cup, with its allAsian final and three semi-finalists from the Subcontinent, confirmed the undisputed
technical domination of teams
coming from this area of the
world over the three former “colonial powers” and founders of
the Imperial Cricket Conference
(England, Australia and South
Africa), none of which, in fact,
reached the semi-finals where,
surprisingly, it was the tiny but
always competitive New Zealand of Daniel Vettori to represent the rest of the world.

all social classes, the differences between which in this part

One morning, still a bit sleepy, I went to the post office at Antegnate, in the province of Bergamo, Italy. While I waited my turn, my eyes fell upon a poster of MoneyGram, which has an
advertisement to get a chance to watch the cricket World Cup finals in India, scheduled on the 2nd of April 2011 in Bombay. A free trip for two people, three nights in a five star hotel and
the free ticket to the stadium! I don’t know what attracted me in that poster, perhaps the color or the word India, since I am an Indian and I miss India and my family for more than 8 years,
or maybe a chance to attend the final of the cricket world championship. I just know that I couldn’t take my eyes from that competition. Ok, I said to myself, and I sent the sms to the
number given by MoneyGram. I did it unconsciously, and throughout the day I repeated: “What do you think, who knows how many thousands of people are participating in this contest,
it would be a miracle if I win!”. A few days later I was informed that I am the second in the list for before me there was a Pakistani to get this great chance. The disappointment was strong.
I thought that it was my fate that I had to wait to go to India and see my loved ones. But something told me not to despair. In fact, after a week I was informed that the winner could not
leave and as the runner-up, the trip was for me! I was going to return to India! On April 1, I departed from Malpensa airport, with my brother. I overwhelmed with great joy and continued to
talk and laugh as if I was mad. We arrived at Bombay. I had a triple joy in this trip for it was great to travel with my brother all the way from Italy to India, to witness the finals where in India
became once again the champion of the World and won the Cricket World Cup and I could visit my family and friends after eight and half years! We spent unforgettable hours together!
The departure was sad, but I had to share. But I realized a dream. And thanks to MoneyGram for letting me win this competition, to turn my dream into reality.

e Sud Africa), nessuna delle
quali ha raggiunto le semifinali dove, a sorpresa, è stata
la piccola, ma sempre competitiva, Nuova Zelanda di

Una mattina sono andato, ancora un po’ assonnato, all’ufficio postale di Antegnate, in provincia di Bergamo. Mentre attendevo il mio turno, sono stato casualmente attratto da un
manifesto della MoneyGram, che pubblicizzava un concorso: il vincitore poteva assistere alla finale mondiale di cricket, che poi si sarebbe rivelata essere Sri Lanka – India, in programma
il 2 aprile a Bombay, con tanto di viaggio aereo e soggiorno per due persone. Non so cosa mi abbia attratto in quel manifesto, forse il colore o la parola India, visto che io sono indiano
e manco dall’India e dalla mia famiglia da più di 8 anni, o forse la possibilità di assistere alla finale del mondiale di cricket. So solo che non riuscivo a staccare gli occhi da quel bando di
concorso. Ok, mi sono detto, e ho spedito l’sms. L’ho fatto inconsciamente, e per tutta la giornata mi sono ripetuto: “Cosa credi, chissà quante migliaia di persone stanno partecipando a
questo concorso, sarebbe un vero miracolo se riuscissi a vincere!”. Un mese dopo mi è stato comunicato che ero stato estratto al secondo posto. Secondo! Che disdetta! La delusione era
forte. Mi dicevo che non era destino che tornassi in India e dai miei cari. Ma qualcosa mi diceva di non disperare. Infatti, dopo una settimana mi è stato comunicato che il vincitore non
poteva partire e, essendo io il secondo classificato, il viaggio toccava a me! Stavo per tornare in India! Il 1 aprile sono finalmente partito dall’aeroporto Malpensa, con mio fratello.
Non smettevo più di parlare, ero agitato, ridevo, facevo battute spiritose con il personale dell’aereo, tanto che mio fratello mi ha detto: “Sembri un bimbo di 5 anni, se non la smetti ti faccio
portare nel vano bagagli!” Arriviamo a Bombay: finalmente ero tornato in India e rivedevo la mia famiglia. L’incontro è stato veramente emozionante, sembrava che volessimo inondare
tutto l’aeroporto con le nostre lacrime di gioia, essere tutti riuniti mi ha dato una carica spirituale ed umana indescrivibile. La finale di cricket si è svolta in uno stadio affollato, ma non
provavo alcun disagio; ero con la mia famiglia, in India. Insieme abbiamo trascorso ore indimenticabili! Ho provato una doppia gioia, anche perché l’India ha vinto la finale mondiale.
La partenza è stata triste, ma dovevo ripartire. Ma avevo realizzato un sogno. E ringrazio MoneyGram per avermi permesso, con questo concorso, di trasformare il mio sogno in realtà.

rarely meet on the field unlike what occurs between Brazil and Argentina at football. It
is for this reason that when the two countries play each other the match is fraught with
meaning that goes well beyond the sporting contest – and all the more so when there
a world cup is at stake. Against this potentially explosive background, the real triumph
of this World Cup was that in the match held in Mohali on Wednesday 30 March – a
tightly fought encounter in which India beat Pakistan by 29 runs – no violence, as had
sadly occurred in the past, flared on the stands, where fans went about the happy
business of supporting their respective teams.
This positive climate of sporting respect was clearly felt in Mumbai in the hours preceding the final. The areas around the Wankhede stadium and the Taj Mahal hotel,
where the finalists were staying, had been tightly cordoned off 72 hours before the
match, when it was known that India had reached the final. The recurrent writing that
appeared starting on Friday in the sprawling city’s business concerns, shops and even

incontri che si svolgono, soprattutto quando in palio c’è il titolo mondiale, di
grandissima tensione. In tal senso, il vero trionfo di questo mondiale sta nel
fatto che mercoledì 30 marzo a Mohali ha avuto luogo solo una partita di
cricket vinta di misura dall’India sul Pakistan ma che non ha dato adito, come
tristemente avvenuto in passato, ad incidenti sugli spalti e strascichi polemici
sui giornali.
Questo clima di positivo rispetto sportivo lo si respirava a Mumbai nelle ore
immediatamente precedenti all’incontro. Le zone dello Stadio Wankhede, sede
della finale, e quella dell’albergo Taj Mahal, che ospitava le due squadre,
sono state blindate 72 ore prima della partita dal momento in cui si è saputo
della presenza indiana in finale. Venerdì, nelle strade in tutta la città, non solo
fuori dai negozi ma anche dai luoghi di culto, campeggiava, ripetuto
in bella evidenza un cartello con una
scritta che non lascia adito ad interpretazioni: “Sabato chiuso”.
Le misure di sicurezza hanno raggiunto un livello di guardia massimo
nelle ore immediatamente precedenti
alla partita. La distanza tra albergo
e stadio, circa un chilometro e mezzo, è stata percorsa dal pullman
dei dirigenti internazionali invitati
alla finale in un’ora e mezza, passando davanti ad uno schieramento
di poliziotti innumerevole. Scesi dal
pullman, si sono dovuti superare sei
metal detector e quattro perquisizioni corporali.
Lo Sri Lanka, costretto a giocare la
finale a tutti gli effetti in trasferta, ha
retto per quasi tutto l’incontro. Anzi,

ceylonesi avevano raggiunto il ragguardevole totale di 274, grazie ad una
splendida invitta centuria di Mahela Jayawardena, l’India appariva in grandissima difficoltà a 31/2, avendo già perso i suoi due assi, Virender Sehwag e
Sachin Tendulkar, ai precisi lanci del mesciato Lasith Malinga. Forse dopo l’eliminazione di Tendulkar, festeggiata in modo un po’ eccessivo quasi che avesse
chiuso la partita, lo Sri Lanka pensava che l’India si smontasse ma il sempre
troppo poco elogiato Gautam Gambhir, prima con il giovane Virat Kohli e poi
con il capitano Mahendra Singh Dhoni, rovesciava gradualmente l’incontro,
consentendo il raggiungimento della vittoria con 10 palle di anticipo in uno
stadio traboccante di folla che ormai pregustava da mezzora il trionfo.
Dopo la partita, in mezzo ai festeggiamenti per la vittoria indiana, non c’è

Security was further tightened in the hours immediately preceding the match. The distance between the hotel and the stadium – approximately one-and-a-half kilometres – was
covered in a one-and-a-half hours by the coaches, with aboard international cricket

off the bus it was necessary to go past six metal detectors and four bodily searches.
Having to play the final in a stadium where the spectators were predominantly and
vociferously Indian, Sri Lanka successfully stayed in the game for practically the entire
length of the match. And had even forced India to stave off a crisis in the second
innings. In fact after posting a seemingly unassailable 274 thanks to a glorious unbeaten century by veteran Mahela Jayawardena, India soon found themselves in a tight
corner at a precarious 31/2 after having lost its two aces Virender Sehwag and
