el Collegio del Mondo Unito
dell’Adriatico trovano casa tutti
gli ideali che alimentano la costruzione di un’umanità migliore: l’incontro tra i popoli e tra le nazioni
e il perseguimento della pace e di un futuro sostenibile.
Quest’istituzione, sorta nel 1982, che la Regione Friuli
Venezia Giulia sostiene con ferma convinzione, ha
saputo unire giovani provenienti da tutto il mondo in
un’attività scolastica che premia il merito e prescinde
dal censo. Gli allievi del Collegio maturano un’esperienza formativa di straordinaria ricchezza, in cui lo studio
è immerso in un contesto di convivenza tra le diverse
estrazioni culturali, linguistiche e religiose. Di laboratori
così, sorti in una terra di confine e di incontro come l’Alto Adriatico, c’è gran bisogno per rispondere a chi alza
muri tra le comunità e a chi non comprende e accresce
le distanze perché non ha la forza di avvicinarsi e di
guardare con occhi sgombri dal pregiudizio.
Alla scuola di oggi chiediamo di preparare i cittadini
di domani: gli studenti che in questi decenni hanno
frequentato il Collegio sono diventati protagonisti nella
società dei loro Paesi e alcuni di loro rivestono ruoli
di primo piano. Il Collegio del Mondo Unito, istituto
d’istruzione secondaria superiore riconosciuto da tutte
le università, insegna che l’identità culturale è forte
quando riconosce la diversità e partecipa al confronto.
E’ un esempio che sprona al cambiamento in un mondo imbruttito da atroci e assurdi conflitti.
La storia consolidata dell’istituzione duinese, che sorge
su una rocca magnifica aperta su un panorama tra il
mare, il verde e il bianco della roccia carsica, sta a insegnarci che la materia dei sogni – la speranza – è fabbricata ogni giorno dalle intuizioni e dal lavoro paziente
delle donne e degli uomini di buona volontà.

WC Adriatic is home to all of the
ideals that concur to create a better human society. It is a meeting
point for peoples and nations in
pursuit of peace and a sustainable
future. This institution, set up in 1982, that the Region
Friuli Venezia Giulia supports with the greatest conviction, has succeeded in uniting youngsters from all
over the world in an educational activity that rewards
merit irrespective of social background. Students at
the College benefit from a greatly enriching educational experience in which academic pursuits are immersed in the coexistence of different cultures, languages
and religions. There is a great need for this kind of
experimentation in border areas like those of the
Upper Adriatic, in response to those that raise walls
to separate communities and to those that do not
understand and look away because they are unable to
step closer and go beyond prejudice.
We ask schools to educate the citizens of the future.
The students that have come to this College over the
decades have then gone on to become leaders in
their communities and countries, at times attaining
the highest responsabilities. UWC Adriatic, an educational institution that is recognised by all universities,
teaches its students that cultural identity is strong
when it acknowledges diversity and engages in dialogue.
It is an educational model that promotes change in a
world that has become uglier owing to atrocious and
absurd conflicts.
The solid history of this institution based in Duino
-- which rises on a magnificent cliff overlooking the
sea, surrounded by greenery and the whiteness of the
Karst rocks -- teaches us that the very stuff of dreams
-- hope -- is crafted day by day by the patient efforts
of people of good will.

del nostro Annual Report. Esso
ripercorre alcune delle tappe e
degli eventi principali dello scorso
anno accademico e fornisce una
testimonianza dello straordinario sostegno ricevuto dai
nostri ex allievi e amici.
La Reunion degli ex allievi, tenutasi nel luglio 2016, ha
dato prova della solidità dei legami che si instaurano
tra coloro che ricevono e quanti invece donano un’istruzione presso il Collegio del Mondo Unito dell’Adriatico.
Nella magnifica cornice del Collegio, rivitalizzare questi
legami personali diventa un esercizio entusiasmante.
La possibilità di godere del patrimonio naturalistico,
architettonico, storico e artistico dell’Italia rende questi
appuntamenti estivi un momento speciale per i parenti
e congiunti dei nostri ex allievi, che in questo modo
hanno l’occasione di conoscere luoghi e persone di cui
hanno tanto sentito parlare nel corso degli anni.
La generosità di diverse persone e istituzioni, che ricoprono ruoli diversi nei confronti del collegio (patroni,
donatori, amministratori, studenti, docenti ed ex allievi)
è una concreta testimonianza della loro fiducia.
Continuiamo a operare grazie alla perdurante e considerevole generosità dei nostri patroni: la Regione
Autonoma Friuli Venezia Giulia e il Ministero degli Affari
Esteri italiano. Al loro contributo si aggiunge quello generoso dei nostri donatori individuali e aziendali. Negli
ultimi anni, inoltre, abbiamo beneficiato anche dai fondi raccolti dalle Commissioni Nazionali UWC in tutto il
mondo, che selezionano i nostri studenti e conoscono

il valore di un’esperienza presso il Collegio del Mondo
Unito dell’Adriatico.
La costituzione di una Fondazione Italiana per i Collegi
del Mondo Unito quale partner strategico del collegio
ha portato a un aumento delle borse di studio messe a
disposizione di giovani studenti italiani che sognano di
poter frequentare uno dei sedici collegi UWC.
La Fondazione Shelby Davis, infine, ha esteso ulteriormente il generoso sostegno che già forniva al movimento UWC, offrendo a ciascun collegio un incentivo
fino a $1.000.000 per raddoppiare le nuove donazioni
e quelle ricorrenti nell’arco di tre anni. Potete vedere a
pagina 56 la straordinaria risposta del Collegio e della
Fondazione Italiana per i Collegi del Mondo Unito a
questa opportunità.
Siamo particolarmente grati agli ex allievi che hanno
nuovamente donato al collegio, cosa non facile in un
periodo in cui le esigenze si moltiplicano, mentre i
fondi a disposizione sono spesso più limitati. Non potremmo continuare a offrire un’educazione trasformativa a ragazzi meritevoli che, tuttavia, non potrebbero
mai permettersela, senza il prezioso aiuto che ci è stato
prestato anche quest’anno da quanti comprendono
il valore effettivo di tale investimento per le nostre
comunità, per i nostri paesi e, in definitiva, per tutto il

elcome to the UWC Adriatic 2015-16 Annual report.
It illustrates and describes
some of the key events
in the academic year and
acknowledges the invaluable support we have received from our alumni and friends.
The July 2016 Alumni reunion demonstrated the
lasting connections that are formed between those
who receive, and those who provide, a UWC Adriatic
education - with the gloriously situated College as
the backdrop for re-establishing interpersonal connections. Being able to explore the heritage of Italy
- natural, architectural, historic, artistic - makes the
reunion also a special opportunity for families and
partners to actually see the places and people that
they have heard so much about over the intervening
years!
The generosity of different individuals and institutions
involved in the College in different roles – Patrons,
donors, administrators, students, teachers, alumni demonstrates their faith in the mission and values of
the College.
Our continued existence is thanks to the continued
and significant generosity of our Patrons, the Autonomous Region Friuli Venezia Giulia and the Italian
Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Their contributions are generously augmented by
scholarships from our private and corporate donors.
We have also greatly benefited in recent years from
the fundraising activities of UWC National Committees around the world who select our students and
understand the value of a UWC Adriatic experience.
The establishment of an Italian UWC Foundation as a
strategic partner for the College has led to an increase
in the capacity for raising scholarships for selected
young Italians to attend UWC colleges around the
world. The Shelby Davis Foundation greatly increased
their already generous support of the UWC movement by offering each college the incentive of up to
$1,000,000 of matching funds for new and repeat
donations raised over the next three years. See how
well UWC Adriatic and the Italian UWC Foundation
have responded to this incentive in the relevant pages
later in this report!
We are particularly grateful to the alumni who have
once again made so many donations which cannot
be easy to find with all the other demands on limited
personal funds. If we are to continue being able to offer a life-changing education to those who truly merit
it but could never afford to pay for it for themselves,
the support we have been shown this year from those
who understand the real value of this investment for
communities, nations and indeed the world is invaluable. Sincerest thanks to you all.”

I
Collegi del Mondo Unito (UWC) propongono
un programma di studi preuniversitario straordinario e con una forte componente pratica
attraverso una rete mondiale di scuole e college. Il
nostro obiettivo è educare e fornire competenze e
strumenti per il cambiamento agli imprenditori sociali
e leader di domani, accogliendo studenti con percorsi
molto diversi alle spalle, anche i più difficili, e provenienti da 154 paesi. Con i suoi cinque decenni di storia,
sempre all’avanguardia nel panorama dell’istruzione
internazionale, UWC è una realtà particolarmente
adatta a identificare e promuovere il cambiamento
positivo nel mondo per mezzo del proprio modello
educativo preuniversitario imperniato su merito e
sulle borse di studio.
Il programma di studi UWC è diverso da tutti gli altri e
pone l’accento sull’apprendimento autonomo, il potenziamento delle capacità analitiche e del pensiero critico, l’etica, il gusto per la sfida, lo sviluppo della persona,
lo spirito d’iniziativa dei giovani e la capacità di fare
squadra. Tutto questo in un ambiente autenticamente
internazionale che unisce standard accademici rigorosi
a un modello di apprendimento esperienziale.
In genere gli studenti UWC hanno tra i 16 e i 18 anni,
un’età in cui l’energia e l’idealismo dei giovani possono essere incanalati nella direzione di valori quali
l’empatia, il senso di responsabilità, l’intraprendenza
e un impegno civico che duri tutta la vita. Grazie allo
strumento delle borse di studio e alle partnership strategiche in campo governativo, educativo, delle associazioni giovanili, degli istituti per orfani e dei centri di
accoglienza per richiedenti asilo, UWC riesce a intercettare una percentuale proporzionalmente rilevante
di studenti che altrimenti non avrebbero accesso a
un’istruzione di qualità come il programma IB e che, al
termine, non godrebbero della possibilità di accedere a
una formazione universitaria.

Il Collegio del Mondo Unito dell’ Adriatico
accoglie giovani alle soglie della loro vita
adulta e li conduce a diventare individui
coscienziosi e compassionevoli dotati della
forza e della saggezza necessarie per attuare dei cambiamenti positivi. Le esperienze
maturate all’interno di una comunità multiculturale in una regione italiana crocevia di
transizioni politiche, storiche e geografiche
vengono qui impiegate per stimolare la
riflessione e la crescita della persona. Il Collegio è stato fondato nel 1982. Diversamente
da altri collegi UWC, ambientati in campus
abbastanza isolati, il collegio di Duino è distribuito per tutto il paese, della cui comunità ormai fa parte. Il nostro Collegio si distingue dagli altri per il solido sostegno della
Regione Autonoma Friuli Venezia Giulia e del
Ministero degli Affari Esteri. Tutti gli studenti
che frequentano questo collegio studiano
l’italiano, per trarre il massimo beneficio
dalla loro immersione biennale nella cultura,
paesaggio, arte e tradizioni italiane.

Movement
U
WC delivers a unique, experiential
pre-university education programme
through a global network of schools
and colleges. Our focus is on preparing
and empowering change makers, social
entrepreneurs and future leaders, recruiting students
from very diverse backgrounds, including the most
marginalised, in 154 countries. With over 50 years at
the forefront of international education, UWC is uniquely poised to identify and foster talent for making
a positive difference in the world through its pre-university, scholarship-based education programmes.
UWC’s distinctive and empowering curriculum emphasises independent learning, critical and analytical skills,
personal challenge and development, youth leadership and initiative, team-building along with a strong
service ethos; all of which is delivered in a genuinely
international environment that combines rigorous
academic standards with experiential learning.
Typically, UWC students are aged 16-18, a time when
young people’s energy and idealism can best be
guided towards transformational values such as empathy, responsibility, entrepreneurship and life-long
action. Thanks to its scholarship model and a wide
range of strategic partnerships with governments,
educational and youth organisations, orphanages
and refugee camps, UWC reaches a high proportion
of students who would not otherwise have access
to high quality academic programmes such as the IB
and would not have the opportunity of a university
education.
UWC Adriatic
UWC Adriatic guides young people at the
threshold of adult independence on the
way to being compassionate and conscientious individuals with the energy and
understanding to work for positive change.
Experiences gained within a diverse multicultural community in an Italian region at
the crossroads of cultural, political, historical and geographical transitions are used to
stimulate personal reflection and growth.
UWC Adriatic was founded in 1982. Unlike
some other UWC’s, which have rather isolated campuses, the UWC Adriatic is integrated into a village, making the College an
integral part of the local community. UWC
Adriatic is also unusual among the United
World Colleges as it is strongly supported
by the Autonomous Region Friuli Venezia
Giulia and the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Students attending UWC Adriatic all
study Italian, in order to make the most of
their two-year in direct contact with Italian
culture, landscapes, art and traditions.

ammissione
L’
accesso ai Collegi del Mondo Unito si basa
sui criteri imprescindibili del merito e delle
potenzialità dello studente. In tutto il mondo, oltre 150 Commissioni Nazionali selezionano i candidati che poi vengono ammessi
ai Collegi, secondo l’ordine di merito della classifica, in
base alle borse di studio disponibili e anche tenendo
conto delle preferenze espresse dallo studente.
L’erogazione delle borse di studio avviene a seguito
di un processo detto “means testing”, grazie al quale si
verifica l’effettiva necessità economica dello studente
idoneo a ricevere una borsa di studio, completa o parziale. Il candidato ideale unisce una spiccata capacità in
campo accademico all’apertura mentale, alla tolleranza e alla comprensione per opinioni e atteggiamenti
diversi dai propri.
Inoltre, vista la probabile lontananza dall’ambiente
familiare e l’impegno particolare richiesto dai programmi scolastici e dalle attività extra accademiche, deve
possedere un buono stato di salute psicofisica.

Le selezioni di norma alternano colloqui formali ad
attività di gruppo, volte a verificare le attitudini e le
motivazioni dei ragazzi. In Italia, la partecipazione alla
selezione per i Collegi del Mondo Unito è riservata agli
studenti italiani che frequentano per la prima volta il
terzo anno di un istituto di istruzione secondaria superiore e che, di norma, abbiano compiuto i 16 anni di età
al momento di iniziare il biennio al Collegio. I vincitori
del processo di selezione, per il biennio in corso, sono
47, provenienti dalle seguenti regioni d’Italia: Basilicata,
Campania, Emilia Romagna, Friuli Venezia Giulia, Lazio,
Lombardia, Molise, Piemonte, Puglia, Sardegna, Sicilia,
Toscana, Trentino-Alto Adige, Umbria e Veneto. Essi
stanno attualmente frequentando tutti e 16 i Collegi
del Mondo Unito.
Admissions
Policy
A
dmission to the United World Colleges is
on the fundamental criteria of merit and
potential. Over 150 National Commissions
around the world select candidates who
are then admitted to the Colleges based
on the students’ ranking and the availability of scholarships, as well as on the preference expressed by
the candidates. The scholarships are awarded after a
process of “means testing” to ascertain the student’s
financial needs in terms of a full or partial scholarship.
The ideal candidate combines a sound academic ability with an open mind, a tolerant attitude and understanding of other opinions and attitudes.
Selections normally involve both formal interviews
and group activities aimed at evaluating the candidates’ approach and motivation. Italian applicants must
be attending the third year of high school for the first
time and must, in normal circumstances, be 16 when
starting their two years at a College. Forty-seven
students have been selected to attend a United World
College this year, from the following Italian regions:
Basilicata, Campania, Emilia Romagna, Friuli Venezia
Giulia, Lazio, Lombardy, Molise, Piedmont, Puglia,
Sardinia, Sicily, Tuscany, Trentino-Alto Adige, Umbria
and Veneto. All 16 United World Colleges have Italian
students attending.
Given the likelihood of students being far from home
and the particularly demanding academic programme, candidates must be in good physical and psychological health.

“D
urante la settimana introduttiva, all’inizio di settembre, in cui ho preso parte a giochi e lavori di gruppo organizzati
dai ragazzi del secondo anno, ho
scelto le materie che avrei voluto studiare: Storia, Italiano, Inglese, Economia, Matematica e Biologia. Sono
molto contenta del percorso formativo che ho deciso
di intraprendere e dei risultati che sto conseguendo.
I programmi accademici sono interessanti e l’ approccio didattico, basato su un metodo individuale e
personalizzato, è molto più razionale e maturo rispetto a quello della scuola italiana. Il curriculum prevede,
inoltre, che si svolgano con assidua partecipazione
ed impegno un’ attività sportiva, una creativa e una di
volontariato; le mie attività sono il nuoto, il blog del
collegio e far visita ad un’ anziana signora in un paese
vicino.
Il 21 settembre con tutti gli studenti ed i professori
ci siamo recati a Udine per mettere in scena, in una
delle più grandi piazze della città, uno show chiamato
“Peace One Day”, per festeggiare la giornata mondiale della pace e anche la giornata del movimento dei
Collegi del Mondo Unito. Lo spettacolo è stato straordinario: abbiamo ballato sulle note della Kalinka, della
Pizzica e di moltissime altre danze tipiche di varie
culture, cercando di mostrare con il nostro entusiasmo
che un mondo unito e pacifico è possibile.

A novembre il programma tv Linea Verde Orizzonti
ha dedicato un servizio a Duino e al Collegio, ed io ho
preso parte alle riprese per promuovere il Bando di
Concorso per i nuovi studenti italiani.
Durante tutto l’ anno, ho avuto la possibilità di visitare città in cui non ero mai stata prima, come Venezia,
Ravenna e Verona.
All’inizio di marzo, inoltre, come ogni anno, noi studenti abbiamo organizzato una “settimana progetto”
e con il mio gruppo siamo andati a Vienna. Il focus di
questa settimana è stato lavorare con un’ associazione
che fornisce ai rifugiati uno spazio creativo e accogliente dove poter passare del tempo in compagnia;
con loro abbiamo preparato la pizza, abbiamo creato
sculture con la carta e perfino preso parte ad una
lezione di tedesco!
A fine marzo ho avuto il piacere di tenere un discorso
alla conferenza TEDx Adriatic, un evento affiliato al
format delle TED conferences, in cui si cerca di parlare
di tematiche importanti e sensibili. Il mio discorso
trattava del fenomeno dello schiarimento della pelle,
pratica che si sta diffondendo sempre più in Africa e
Asia; è stato un evento molto piacevole e, inoltre, il
mio discorso è stato particolarmente apprezzato.
Ad aprile abbiamo organizzato la Model United Nations Adriatic, la simulazione dell’ Assemblea Generale
delle Nazioni Unite, per me questa è stata una grande
occasione perché vorrei lavorare nel campo della
diplomazia.
A maggio, dopo gli esami IB dei ragazzi del secondo
anno e i miei esami finali, il mio primo anno della mia
avventura al collegio, purtroppo, è terminato.
E’ stato ricco ed intenso, eppure, guardandomi indietro, sembra sia passato in un attimo. “

“D
uring introductory week,
early in September, I participated in several group games and activities organised
by second-year students and
chose the subjects I intend to study: History,
Italian, English, Economics, Math and Biology. I am
very pleased with the educational path I have set on
as well as with my results; the academic programme
is interesting and the educational method is personalised and is much more efficient and thought out
compared to Italian schools. Moreover, the syllabus
also requires that students commit to intense sports,
creative and volunteering activities; I have chosen to
take up swimming, working on the school blog and
visiting an aged lady in a nearby village.
On 21 September my fellow students, teachers and I
went to the nearby town of Udine in order to perform
in a show in one of the town’s largest squares. The
show is called “Peace One Day”, and celebrates the
International Day of Peace as well as UWC Day. It is an
extraordinary experience: we danced to the tunes of
Kalinka and Pizzica as well as several other popular
dances from across many different cultures. Those
dances are meant to convey our enthusiasm and prove that a peaceful world is possible.
In November the tv programme “Linea Verde Orizzonti” visited Duino and our College and I took part
in order to speak about life at the College and talk
about the call for applications for Italian students
interested in UWC selections.
Throughout the year I had the chance to visit places
that I’d never been to, such as Venice, Ravenna and
Verona.
Early in March, as always at the college, the students
organised their “project weeks” and my group chose
to visit Vienna. The aim of our week was to work for
an association that welcomes refugees in a place dedicated to creative and social activities; we prepared
pizza together, created sculptures from paper and
even took part in a German lesson!
In mid March I delivered a talk at TEDx Adriatic, an
event that is organised along the lines of TED conferences to address relevant and topical issues. My talk
was about the practice of using chemicals to make
one’s skin whiter, something that is becoming increasingly common in Africa and Asia. We all enjoyed
the event tremendously and my talk seemed to have
been particularly popular.
In April we held the MUN - Model United Nations
Adriatic, a simulation of the General Assemby of the
United Nations. I particularly enjoyed this activity as
eventually I would like to work in diplomacy.
In May, after second years took their IB exams and I
took my finals, my first year at the College unfortunately drew to an end. Those months were so dense
and enriching and yet, as I look back, it seems to me
that they passed in a moment. “

l Collegio del Mondo Unito dell’Adriatico Onlus
ha adottato Il programma del Diploma del Baccellierato Internazionale sin dalla sua fondazione. Il punteggio massimo è 45, con la soglia di
“promosso” fissata a 24 punti.
Gli studenti scelgono sei materie accademiche, tre a livello superiore (HL) e tre a livello standard (SL). Inoltre,
ciascuno studente segue un corso interdisciplinare di
Teoria della Conoscenza, scrive una tesina e partecipa
con impegno in attività creative, sportive e di servizio
sociale. Servono risultati positivi in tutti questi campi
per ottenere il Diploma IB.

I diplomati del 2015 hanno ottenuto complessivamente eccellenti risultati, con un punteggio medio di 35,6
su 45 e con il 90% di candidati promossi. I risultati variano di anno in anno, ma sono in genere positivi e di
molto superiori alla media mondiale, come illustrato
nel grafico.
I risultati conseguiti dal Collegio del Mondo Unito
dell’Adriatico sono particolarmente significativi quando si tiene conto che la maggior parte degli studenti
non è di madrelingua inglese e che gli stranieri studiano la lingua italiana.

WC Adriatic has taught the International
Baccalaureate Diploma Programme since
its foundation. In the IB Diploma, the
“top score” is 45 points, with 24 points
being a “passing” score.
Students study six academic subjects, three at Higher
Level and three at Standard Level. In addition, each
student completes the Theory of Knowledge course,
writes an Extended Essay and engages in extensive
Creative, Physical and Social Service activities. All
components need to be satisfactorily completed, in
order to obtain the IB Diploma.
The graduating class of 2016 performed very well
overall, with an average score of 35.1 points (2015:
35.6 points) and an impressive pass rate of 95.6%
(2015: 90%). Results fluctuate from year to year, but
are generally strong and well above the world average, as shown in the diagramme.
The UWC Adriatic results are particularly impressive
when taking into account that many students are
studying the diploma in English, which is not their
first language. Furthermore, all foreigners are also
required to study Italian either as part or in addition
to their six IB Diploma courses.

o sviluppo intellettuale dei nostri studenti
non è confinato ai soli banchi di scuola. Il
programma di attività extracurricolari offre
un’ampia gamma di possibilità di espressione
creativa e di apprendimento di nuove competenze. Tali attività sono una componente essenziale
della crescita personale ed educativa dei nostri ragazzi. Con queste attività tendiamo anche a trasmettere
una serie di valori e, nel farlo, è importante offrire ai
ragazzi una scelta articolata.
Così come avviene in ambito sportivo, anche nelle attività creative sfruttiamo appieno le risorse disponibili
a Duino, in primis la dimensione fortemente multiculturale della comunità del Collegio e le competenze
dei nostri docenti, per proporre agli studenti delle
attività che li rendano, direttamente o indirettamente,
sempre più consapevoli del mondo che li circonda.
Alcune di queste attività, come la pubblicazione
dell’annuario del Collegio e del blog The Adriatic
Times - sono un modo per gli studenti di contribuire ad arricchire il clima culturale del Collegio con
attività creative che sono molto apprezzate da tutta
la comunità.
Le singole attività possono variare da un anno all’altro,
in base alle disponibilità dei docenti e agli interessi
degli studenti. Ad ogni modo, lo scorso anno, sono

I
ntellectual development at the College is not
limited to classroom study. The extra-curricular
programme provides a variety of opportunities
for creative expression and gaining new skills. We
regard these activities as a fundamental element
of our students’ personal and educational growth.
While we aim for our students to gain similar fundamental values from these activities, we try to offer a
broad range of options.
As in our sports programme, we try to make the most
of the resources readily available to us in Duino
through the activities we offer – we use the wide
variety of international perspectives and expertise
to offer our students activities which expand their
awareness of the world around them both directly
and indirectly.
Some of the activities – such as working on the
Yearbook and the school newsblog The Adriatic Times
- also give the students the chance to enrich the College environment in a creative way that is appreciated
by the whole community.

attività fisica è decisamente presente
all’interno della visione olistica che il
movimento UWC ha della crescita personale degli studenti. Crediamo che la
possibilità di svolgere un’attività fisica
rappresenti un’ opportunità per ragazze e ragazzi
di sviluppare, lontano dai banchi di scuola, svariate
competenze con persone di tipo diverso, oltre a
contribuire a uno stile di vita salutare. Anche se la
competizione nello sport può essere stimolante e
divertente, essa non viene posta al centro dell’attività sportiva al Collegio. Tutti i nostri studenti praticano almeno un’attività fisica e possono aggiungerne
altre se gli impegni lo consentono.
Il nostro programma di attività sportive è volto a
valorizzare le singolari risorse naturali disponibili a
Duino e pertanto proponiamo una serie di attività in
mare e in montagna.

hysical exercise naturally figures in the
UWC movement’s holistic approach to
our students’ self-development. We believe the opportunity to pursue a sporting
activity provides a chance outside of the
classroom to develop different skills and work with
different people, while contributing to a healthy
lifestyle. Though competition is fun, it is not the
focus of sport at the college. All of our students take
part in at least one physical activity, and are welcome to join in with more if their schedule permits.
In our programme we do our best to make to the
most of Duino’s particular geographical resources;
offering a range of marine and mountain activities.

offrire assistenza ai membri della
comunità che ne hanno bisogno.
Per il Collegio dell’Adriatico questo è ancor più
vero, dato che è fisicamente integrato nella vita
della comunità locale. Il programma di servizio
alla comunità ha, dunque, un forte impatto nella
vita del Collegio.
E’ attraverso il servizio sociale che gli studenti
concretizzano nella vita quotidiana i propri ideali
e iniziano a “creare un mondo migliore”, offrendosi di aiutare chi ne ha bisogno, senza distinzioni.

ll UWC’s share the belief that the
heart of their philosophy lies in
the experience of offering assistance to members of the community in need. This is even more true at
UWC Adriatic, which is physically integrated into
the life of the local community. The Social Service
programme has an enormous significance in the
life of the College.
It is through social service that College students
apply their ideals to everyday life; it is the beginning of “making the world a better place” by
offering help to others regardless of differences.
The College provides students with a wide range
of organized service opportunities. Social services include:
Work with Italian and Slovene speaking children
through art, teaching English and
other activities in local primary schools
Assistance to persons with mental or physical disabilities
Offering companionship to the elderly or
other persons who are confined to their homes

per la Morehead-Cain è molto rigorosa.
Possono presentare domanda a questa
prestigiosa borsa solo studenti con un
curriculum esemplare, sia in termini scolastici che dal punto di vista dell’impatto
che hanno nella loro comunità. Sarah è
stata una studentessa modello del nostro Collegio. Ha brillato per la sua forte
personalità, il senso etico, la leadership e
un grande impegno nello studio, che ha
saputo combinare con il ruolo di rappresentante degli studenti.
L’
Ufficio Orientamento del Collegio offre
un’ampia gamma di servizi e consigli
agli studenti che desiderano fare domanda di ammissione alle università di
tutto il mondo. I consulenti all’orientamento organizzano nel corso dell’anno accademico una serie di presentazioni sulle procedure
di ammissione, con particolare attenzione ai
passaggi e agli accorgimenti necessari per una
corretta preparazione della domanda. Gli studenti discutono i loro progetti e le loro scelte future
assieme ai consulenti e vengono assistiti a tutto

Le borse di studio e altre forme di aiuto economico sono fondamentali per i nostri studenti e
pertanto l’ufficio orientamento si accerta che
la documentazione economico-finanziaria sia
presentata correttamente. L’ufficio fornisce anche
indicazioni rispetto alla disponibilità di borse di
studio per il percorso universitario prescelto. Il
mantenimento di relazioni pubbliche e di forme
di collaborazione efficienti tra il Collegio e più di
cento università è una parte rilevante dei compiti dell’ufficio. Ogni anno il Collegio ospita le
presentazioni da parte dei rappresentanti di una
cinquantina di università americane, canadesi ed
europee.
I nostri studenti presentano domanda a una moltitudine di istituzioni universitarie e molti di essi
affrontano procedure di ammissione fortemente competitive. La sfida quotidiana dell’ufficio
orientamento sta nel seguire costantemente gli
interessi degli studenti, conoscerne il potenziale
sia sotto il profilo accademico che quello umano
e renderli consapevoli di tutti i requisiti necessari
per garantire a tutti l’ammissione all’università.
L’ufficio offre il proprio supporto anche ai docenti e al Rettore in modo da sostenere al meglio gli
studenti nel loro percorso di orientamento. Gli
studenti che desiderano prendersi un anno di
pausa dallo studio, vengono seguiti fino all’anno
nel quale presentano domanda.

he UWC Adriatic University counseling
office offers a wide range of services and
advice to our students who are applying
to Universities all around the globe. Our
University counselors offer a series of
presentations on the Admission procedures and
highlight all the important aspects that the students
should prepare for in their applications. Discussing
future plans and career choices as well offering an all
around support to students with their essays, interviews as well as other key requirements of the application. The university counselors are also responsible
for overseeing and editing the whole Testimonial
writing process.
The office also offers help to students in preparing for
the standardized tests. Financial aid and scholarships
are very important for our students so we make sure
their financial documents are submitted in correct
form trying to always point the students in the right
direction in terms of scholarship availability as well.
Ensuring an efficient and beneficial relationship
between more than 100 Universities and Colleges representatives that are connected with UWC Adriatic is
an important part of their job. Every year UWC Adriatic hosts around 50 University presentations from
American, Canadian and European institutions.
Sarah Mackenzie
Sarah was awarded the Morehead-Cain
scholarship and is now at the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill. The
selection process for the Morehead-Cain is
extremely rigorous. Only students demonstrating exceptional impact and academic
achievement are eligible for this prestigious
scholarship. Sarah has been an exemplary
student at UWC Adriatic and has shown
moral force of character, leadership and
academic focus while also serving as a
student representative.

Our students apply to a wide spectrum of universities
and many face the challenges of very competitive
admission procedures. Following their interests, academic and personal potential every day and trying to
make them aware of all the requirements that are key
to a successful application is our counselor’s everyday
challenge. The counselors liaise with the teachers
in order to ensure the best possible support for the
students. The University office also supports the students who are willing to take a Gap Year option and is
available to support their university applications the
following year.

Celia è uno degli studenti meritevoli che partecipano al programma
“Semester at Sea 2016”. Si tratta
di un programma internazionale
di studio in cui studenti di varie
discipline si imbarcano assieme per
un’esperienza di studio comparato
ed esperienze concrete rispetto agli
scenari sociali e politici di diversi
paesi in via di sviluppo. Nell’autunno 2017 Celia inizierà a studiare a
Princeton. Al nostro Collegio Celia

programme 2016. Semester at Sea
is a multiple country study abroad
program on board a ship open to
students of all majors, emphasizing
comparative studies and first hand
experience of the social and political scenarios of various developing
countries. In the fall of 2017 she will
be starting her studies in Princeton.
At UWC Adriatic, Celia showed
excellent academic potential combined with great passion for the activities and genuine involvement in

In addition to the experience that the College offers to
its community of teachers and students, UWC Adriatic
must project its vision to those outside of the College

Peace One Day
UWC Day, Udine 21.09.2015
G
li studenti arrivano a Duino alla fine di
agosto. Quelli del primo anno trascorrono le prime due settimane, da una parte,
a imparare a conoscere il Collegio e i
suoi spazi (le residenze e i luoghi in cui si
svolgono le attività accademiche ed extracurricolari
sono sparse per il paese) e, dall’altra, a partecipare alle
introduzioni ai corsi, in modo da decidere quali materie scegliere per l’esame IB. Gli studenti del secondo
anno fanno tutto il possibile per accogliere i nuovi
compagni e compagne e un modo importante di
conoscersi e imparare a collaborare è l’organizzazione
dello spettacolo Peace One Day.
Infatti, Peace One Day è anche il nome di una manifestazione che si svolge in tutto il mondo il 21 settembre, Giornata Internazionale della Pace e del Cessate
il Fuoco. In quella giornata il Collegio organizza da
diversi anni uno spettacolo multiculturale. Inoltre, la
stessa giornata è anche diventata lo “UWC Day”
festeggiato in tutti e 16 i collegi. Lo spettacolo è
anche un modo per celebrare i valori fondativi dei collegi, ovvero la pace e la comprensione internazionale.
Dopo anni in cui veniva realizzato a Trieste, nel 2015
Peace One Day ha debuttato a Udine, città che dista
circa 40 chilometri dalla sede del Collegio. Il sindaco, Prof. Furio Honsell, ha dato il benvenuto ai nostri
studenti in piazza Giacomo Matteotti e gli udinesi
hanno accolto molto calorosamente la performance
chiedendoci di tornare l’anno seguente.
In cosa consiste lo spettacolo? Gli studenti, molti dei
quali indossano i loro costumi nazionali, si esibiscono
in una serie di danze tradizionali e moderne in una
pubblica piazza addobbata con le loro bandiere nazionali. Con meno di due settimane a disposizione per
le prove, lo spettacolo è una bella sfida per i ragazzi
ma, anno dopo anno, riesce a dimostrare dove possa
arrivare l’entusiasmo dei nostri ragazzi per il dialogo
multiculturale e la pace.

tudents arrive in Duino in the last week of
August and, as far as first years are concerned, they spend the first two weeks getting
to know their whereabouts (the College is
sprawled around the village of Duino) and
going to “taster sessions” for courses, in order to choose what subjects they wish to take for their IB. Second
years help newcomers feel at home in every way they
can and an important part of the bonding between
them occurs as they jointly organise and rehearse for
a student driven performance called Peace One Day
Show.
Peace One Day is a worldwide celebration held on
September 21st, the international Day of Peace and
Ceasefire. UWC Adriatic has been hosting a multicultural show on that day for many years now. Moreover,
that very same day is also UWC Day. The Peace One
Day show is therefore our way of celebrating the UWC
values of peace and international understanding.
After being hosted in Trieste for quite some time, in
2015 the show was first taken to Udine, 40 km away
from the College. The city’s mayor, Prof. Furio Honsell
greeted our students in piazza Giacomo Matteotti
and the city dwellers gave them a warm welcome and
asked that they return the following year.
What is the show all about? Students, often wearing
national costumes, perform a number of traditional
and modern dances in a public square adorned with
all of their national flags. With barely two weeks’ time
for rehearsals the show is quite a challenge and nevertheless invariably turns out to be a great example
of what our student’s enthusiasm for cross-cultural
dialogue and peace can actually achieve.

le tende assieme, preparino i pasti in autonomia,

carattere storico-culturale.

I
n seguito agli attentati terroristici di Parigi del
novembre 2015, il Comune di Monfalcone, che
ospita una numerosa comunità musulmana, ha
invitato un gruppo di ragazzi del nostro collegio
a condividere i propri pensieri ed emozioni. I temi
trattati sono stati l’integrazione, il dialogo interculturale
e la tolleranza religiosa affinché l’evento, intitolato “Je
suis Paris”, dimostrasse la solidarietà di Monfalcone con
le vittime degli attentati ma anche con le comunità
musulmane ingiustamente percepite da alcuni come
covi di terroristi.
Gli studenti che sono saliti sul palco per prendere la
parola, cantare e suonare sono stati:
Hamza Abdelrahman (Giordania), Hana Bushara
(Bermuda), Borbála Hardi (Francia), Camilla Persello
e Giorgia Paliaga Mills (entrambe italiane) ed Emad
Siddiq (Pakistan).
Monfalcone
I
n the aftermath of the Paris terrorist attacks of
November 2015, Monfalcone, a small city close
to Duino with a significant Muslim community,
a group of UWC Adriatic students was invited by
the Mayor to share their views and feelings on
the Paris events. Issues discussed included integration, intercultural dialogue and religious tolerance, so
that the event named “Je suis Paris” could express a
spirit of solidarity both with Parisian victims and with
Islamic communities, unjustly perceived by some as
terrorist dens.
The students who spoke, sang and played music before a moved audience of both Christians and Muslims
were:

l 19 marzo 2016, per il secondo anno di seguito, il Collegio ha proposto un evento TEDx,
organizzato internamente dagli studenti sul
tema “Colorare il mondo”.
Gli eventi TEDx seguono le impostazioni degli interventi TED, il cui obiettivo è promuovere all’interno di una comunità un confronto e un dialogo
su tematiche di carattere non ideologico. Si tratta
di una delle modalità con cui i nostri studenti
svolgono un’attività creativa per la componente
CAS del loro programma di diploma di Bacellierato Internazionale. Nel contempo, offrono alla
comunità del collegio un evento di livello.
Gli studenti, infatti, hanno un ruolo centrale
nell’organizzazione dell’evento, che è il risultato
di mesi di grande impegno. Per renderne possibile lo svolgimento, da settembre a marzo una
squadra di 9 studenti, coordinata da un membro
del nostro staff, ha collaborato all’organizzazione
della logistica, ai contenuti del programma e alla
raccolta fondi.

Gli eventi TED si richiamano a uno specifico codice di condotta che richiede la presentazione di
contenuti imparziali e di buon livello.
Pertanto, l’aver soddisfatto questo requisito rappresenta un risultato di cui l’organizzazione può
essere fiera.
Alcuni studenti hanno partecipato all’evento in
qualità di relatori: Karina Lisboa, Ellen Henricson,
Nursima Nas e Domitilla de Luca Bossa, assieme
al docente Steve Coughlin, hanno presentato al
pubblico interventi appassionati e interessanti.
I relatori esterni che hanno arricchito il programma sono stati numerosi e hanno ricoperto
una gamma di ambiti disciplinari estremamente
diversificata: Gypsee Yo (Albanian poetessa slam
e attivista), Ali Hassanali (fisico proveniente dal
Kenia e dalla Tanzania), Sarah Denie (economista
olandese), Jacques Pion (fotografo francese) e
Jan Peloza (attivista sloveno).

n 19 March 2016, for the second
year running, UWC Adriatic created
and hosted a TEDx talks event. Our
theme this year was “Colouring the
World”.
TEDx events are organised in the spirit of TED
talks, which aim to spark conversation and community debate without an ideological agenda.
At UWC Adriatic we see this kind of event as the
ideal opportunity for our students to fulfill the
important Creativity, Action and Service aspects
of their IB diploma while offering an engaging and
enlightening event to the College community.
Our students play a central role in creating the
event, which is the result of several months’
hard work. From September until March a team
of nine students collaborated with the supervision of a member of staff to produce the event,
organise the logistics, the programme and do
fundraising in order to make the event possible.
TED events have a code of conduct requiring
high quality and impartial content, and complying to these standards marks a great achievement on the part of all involved.
Some of our students also participated in
the event as speakers, giving 18 minute talks
themselves: Domitilla de Luca Bossa, Ellen Henricson, Karina Lisboa and Nursima Nas, as well as
our teacher Steve Coughlin, gave enjoyable and
enlightening talks. In addition, we had the privilege to welcome a number of guests to Duino
to give insightful talks on their respective field
of expertise: Gypsee Yo (Albanian slam poet and
activist), Ali Hassanali (Kenyan-Tanzanian physicist), Sarah Denie (Dutch economist), Jacques
Pion (French photographer) and Jan Peloza
(Slovene activist).

di profughi che scappano
dalla guerra, incrociano le vicinanze del Collegio del Mondo Unito dell’Adriatico. Per
tutti gli anni ’90 gli studenti di Duino sono stati
coinvolti in prima persona nell’accoglienza dei
profughi che allora scappavano dalla guerra in ex
Yugoslavia. Oggi sono cambiati i paesi di provenienza, sono uguali le ferite di queste persone
che hanno dovuto lasciare tutto a causa dell’odio
e della guerra.
Come sempre, i ragazzi e gli ex studenti del Collegio non sono rimasti indifferenti alle loro storie.
“Abbiamo raccolto fondi attraverso la vendita
di torte. Con i soldi raccolti abbiamo comprato
dolci per i bambini. Abbiamo anche smistato
vestiti raccolti dall’organizzazione Auxilia Onlus e
con le nostre scatole di aiuti siamo partiti per la
Slovenia, dove transitavano rifugiati provenienti
dall’Iraq e dalla Siria. Abbiamo visitato la struttura che li accoglieva e abbiamo potuto consegnare
il nostro materiale. Questo viaggio ha dato al
nostro social service “aiuti umanitari” una migliore comprensione di ciò che vivono i rifugiati che
passano attraverso quell’angolo di Europa che
negli ultimi due anni ho chiamato ‘casa’.”

Doing creative work with refugees

This was one out of several project
weeks involving refugees.
“I
t’s not the first time that the routes used
by refugees to flee from war pass by UWC
Adriatic. Throughout the 90s students in
Duino participated in activities aimed at
helping refugees who were fleeing from
former Yugoslavia. Nowadays the countries they come
from have changed but the wounds inflicted in these
people who have had to abandon their homes because of war and hatred remain the same.
As always, College students and alumni cannot be
indifferent to their plight. “We raised funds by baking
and selling cakes and used the money to buy food for
children. We also sorted out clothes collected by the
organisation Auxilia Onlus and went to Slovenia with
our boxes of goods to take them to refugees from Iraq
and Syria. We visited the refugee camp and delivered
the boxes of goods. This trip enabled the participants
in the Humanitarian Aid Service to better understand
what refugees go through as they arrive in this corner
of Europe that has been my home for the past two
years.”

na delle attività extracurricolari a cui
si dedicano ogni anno alcuni nostri
studenti è la Model United Nations
(MUN), in cui i ragazzi imparano a
impersonare i delegati delle Nazioni
Unite e simulano lo svolgimento dei lavori delle
commissioni dell’ONU. Tale attività si svolge lungo tutto l’anno accademico e coinvolge gli studenti nell’organizzazione di una conferenza MUN.
In tutto il mondo migliaia di scuole medie, superiori e università organizzano eventi di questo
genere, insegnando così agli studenti a svolgere
delle ricerche su temi di attualità, a svolgere dibattiti, a sviluppare competenze di public speaking, di pensiero critico, di lavoro di gruppo e di
leadership personale. Al termine delle conferenze
gli studenti-delegati ricevono un attestato. Solitamente al Collegio invitiamo dei relatori esterni
e la MUN 2015 ha avuto il piacere di ospitare l’ex
allieva Lina Atallah (1998-2000), Chief Editor del
periodico di informazione indipendente egiziano
Mada Masr.
Nel suo discorso di apertura Linah si è rivolta a
una platea di giovani entusiasti con parole di
incoraggiamento: “Godetevi questa giornata.
Negoziate con ardore. Leggete i vostri colleghi
delegati con tutti i vostri sensi, non solo con la
vostra razionalità. Non lasciatevi sfuggire alcun
dettaglio, ma prendetevi anche il tempo di evadere verso l’incerto mondo dei sogni. Un mondo
in cui gli stati nazionali sono solo delle chimere.
E cercate di muovervi continuamente tra la realtà
che vi circonda e la vostra fantasia. Oggi impersonerete i delegati dello MUN. Domani impersonate
i vostri sogni. Permettete alla vostra immaginazione di trionfare.”

Nations
O
ne of the extra-curricular activities that
some students participate in every year
at UWC Adriatic is MUN - Model United
Nations - in which students typically
roleplay delegates to the UN and simulate UN committees. This activity involves preparing
throughout the year an MUN conference. Thousands
of middle school, high school, and college students
around the world participate in Model United Nations
every year, which involves substantial researching,
public speaking, debating, and writing skills, as well
as critical thinking, teamwork, and leadership abilities.
At the end of the conference student-delegates are
given an award certificate. External guests are usually
invited and the keynote speaker at the 2015 MUN
in our College was alumna Lina Atallah (1998-2000),
Chief Editor of the Egyptian independent news outlet
Mada Masr.
Her final words to an Auditorium brimming with
eager MUN participants, were words of advice and
encouragement: “Enjoy MUN. Negotiate fiercely. Read
those around you with all your senses and not just
your mind. Don’t let a detail escape from you. But also
take a moment to depart to the more uncertain world
of dreams. A world where states are no more than
sheer fantasies. And make sure you are constantly
moving back and forth between your reality and your
imagination. Role play for MUN today and role play for
your imagination tomorrow.”

marzo una delegazione di nostri
studenti ha preso parte all’Assemblea
Generale del PEG a Trieste. Con i suoi
28.000 partecipanti a più di 500 eventi
ogni anno in tutta Europa, il PEG è la più
grande associazione di educazione informale alla cittadinanza attiva. I giovani partecipanti sviluppano la
capacità di ricercare dati, di pensiero critico e di public
speaking e, per di più, secondo un nostro studente
“vedere tanti giovani che si ritrovano per discutere
formalmente di questioni così cruciali ci fa sperare
che, un giorno, quegli stessi giovani possano risolvere
tali problematiche nel mondo reale”.
L’Assemblea Generale di Trieste ha riunito 80 studenti
da Trieste, Udine, Duino e dalla Slovenia per una giornata di dibattiti su questioni di attualità, dagli Obiettivi di Sviluppo Sostenibile all’insufficiente rappresentanza delle donne in politica e nell’economia, alla
regolamentazione dei tirocini formativi e altro ancora.
I nostri ragazzi hanno formato la “Commissione per le
Libertà Civili, la Giustizia e gli Affari Interni”, incaricata
di affrontare la crisi dei migranti ed era composta da:
Massiullah Faqiri (Afganistan), Ahmed Hussein (Kenia),
Matthew Lee (Regno Unito), Rida Naz (Pakistan), Emad
Siddiq (Pakistan) e Alexander Thaller (Austria). L’argomento, così controverso, ha richiesto un lungo dibattito prima delle votazioni, ma la risoluzione dei nostri
studenti è stata approvata e i nostri studenti hanno
ricevuto un certificato di encomio per il loro eccellente contributo alla discussione.

I
n March a delegation of our students participated in the General Assembly of the EYP in
Trieste. With 28.000 youngsters involved each
year in almost 500 events across Europe, EYP is
the greatest European association for informal
education on active citizenship. Participants learn
skills such as fact-checking, critical thinking and
public speaking and, most importantly, according one
of our students “seeing so many young people come
together to address crucially important issues makes
us hope that one day these same students might be
able to solve those very problems in real life”.
The General Assembly in Trieste gathered some 80
students from schools in Trieste, Udine, Duino and
Slovenia for an entire day of discussion and voting of
motions for resolutions prepared by the delegations
on several topical issues (ranging from Sustainable
Development Goals, to the underepresentation of women in politics and business, to regulating internships
and traineeships and more).
Our students formed the “Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs” dealing with the
migration crisis: Massiullah Faqiri (Afghanistan),
Ahmed Hussein (Kenya), Matthew Lee (UK), Rida Naz
(Pakistan), Emad Siddiq (Pakistan), and Alexander
Thaller (Austria).
With migration such a controversial topic, several
rounds of debate took place before votes were cast
but the motion for a resolution was eventually approved and our students received a certificate of excellence for their outstanding contribution to the debate.

Dalla nascita la mia vita è stata segnata dalla frontiera. Ho conosciuto il
confine della Jugoslavia di Tito, le fughe dalla repressione sovietica in Ungheria e Cecoslovacchia, la durezza dei controlli all’ingresso nella Russia comunista. (...)
Dalla mia città li vedo arrivare rifugiati dal tempo della
mia nascita. Ho visto gli istriani in fuga da Tito, gli
ungheresi in fuga dalla repressione sovietica, i curdi in
fuga dalla Turchia o dall’Iraq, gli africani in fuga dalla
fame, i croati e i bosniaci in fuga dal massacro jugoslavo, i serbi in fuga dalle truppe croate, gli albanesi
in fuga dalla repressione serba. Oggi i siriani e gli
afghani. (...) Perché il rifugiato diventi una persona per
noi, dobbiamo capire cosa passa nella mente di chi
sbarca alla disperata in un paese straniero. Dovremmo
avvicinarlo, ma non sappiamo da dove cominciare.
Eppure i millenni sono pieni di migrazioni, naufragi e
spostamenti di popoli. La storia l’hanno sempre fatta i

sopravvivere. E’ un reduce di guerra che ha perso tutti
i suoi compagni nel periplo disperato del mare. Erra
per dieci anni senza trovare la sponda definitiva. Per

was born in Trieste, a few steps from a
country that no longer exists, Yugoslavia.
(...)
Ever since I was born, my life has been
marked by frontiers. I have experienced Tito’s Yugoslav frontier, the fight from Soviet repression
in Hungary and Czechoslovakia, the harshness of the
frontier controls when entering Communist Russia.
(...) From my town I have seen refugees arriving since I
was born. I saw the Istrians feeing from Tito, the Hungarians feeing from the Soviet repression, the Kurds
feeing from Turkey or Iraq, the Africans feeing from
hunger, the Croatians and Bosnians feeing from the
Yugoslav massacre, the Serbs feeing from the Croatian
troops, the Albanians feeing from the Serb repression.
And now Syrians and Afghans. (...) For us to consider
a refugee as a person, we have to understand what
goes through the mind of someone who in desperation ends up in a foreign country. We should approach
him but we don’t know where to start. Yet history is
full of migrations, shipwrecks and populations on the
move. History has always been made by the tireless
feet of homo sapiens, by the determination of those
whose bridges are cut off behind them and who face
the black sea to search for a better life. In this case
too, rather than in the analyses of the US Department
of State, in the studies of the Foreign Office or in the
arid statistical forecasts of the European Union, it is
useful to look to ancient times. Earlier, I spoke about
the Exodus in the Bible. Now I would like to talk about
another key book: Homer’s Odyssey.
Ulysses embodies the castaway par excellence. He is
the symbol of all those who cross an unknown space to survive. He is a war veteran who has lost all his
companions in the desperate circumnavigation of
the seas. He wanders for ten years without fnding his
fnal shore. He was at the mercy of a storm on a raft for
seventeen days, then the waves took him away and
fung him naked, exhausted and famished onto an
unknown beach, which turned out to be the island of
the Phaeacians...”

O
biettivo del progetto è stata la promozione della mobilità degli studenti
della scuola superiore, per dare a
studenti di 17 e 18 anni la possibilità di
frequentare per alcuni mesi una scuola
all’estero.
Tutte le attività del progetto KEPASS sono state rivolte
allo sviluppo di un sistema scolastico più integrato
nella regione dell’Adriatico, per offrire agli studenti
un’esperienza multiculturale e plurilingue che affonda
le sue radici nelle tradizioni locali aprendosi tuttavia verso l’estero. Tutti gli studenti hanno ottenuto
diplomi e qualifiche validi nei paesi coinvolti (Albania, Bosnia Erzegovina, Croazia, Italia, Montenegro e
Slovenia).
Per partecipare e dunque ricevere/inviare studenti
con programmi di mobilità, le scuole superiori dovevano accreditarsi presso la rete del progetto KEPASS.
Tali scuole, assieme ai partner istituzionali del progetto, hanno dunque creato un sistema scolastico dell’Adriatico, creando così un flusso continuo di studenti in
mobilità, garantendo nel contempo l’equipollenza dei
titoli e delle qualifiche ottenute all’estero dai ragazzi.
Durante i tre mesi trascorsi all’estero gli studenti sono
stati esposti a lingue e culture diverse e ad approcci
didattici e curricola nuovi, oltre a prendere parte a
diverse attività extra curricolari. L’impatto di queste
esperienze in termini di crescita personale, competenze multiculturali, flessibilità, acquisizione di nuove
competenze e nuove lingue è stato straordinario. Gli
studenti sono anche riusciti a superare gli stereotipi
legati alle identità culturali ed hanno appreso ad operare efficacemente in contesti internazionali.

his project aimed at promoting undergraduate mobility in secondary
schools, giving students 17-18 of age
the opportunity to attend for a few
months a school in another country.
All KEPASS activities ere targeted at developing
a more integrated school system in the Adriatic
region, offering cross-cultural and multi-language experiences rooted in local tradition yet
open to international contributions. All students
obtained qualifications and diplomas valid in all
the countries involved.
In order to participate in the program and
send/receive students on mobility programmes secondary schools needed to be registered
to the KEPASS system. Registered schools and
institutional project partners thus gave life to
an Adriatic school system, giving rise to a continuous mobility of students while also ensuring
the mutual recognition of skills and qualifications gained while abroad.
During the 3 months spent abroad students
were exposed to different cultures and languages, they experienced new teaching methodologies and curricula and were involved in several
extra academic activities. The impact of the
experience in terms of self-development, flexibility, intercultural competences, new skills and
languages acquired was outstanding. Students
were also able to overcome ethnic prejudices
and learned to operate in different national professional contexts.

a Reunion di quest’anno ha festeggiato le
generazioni 1984-86, 1994-96 e 2004-06,
riunitesi rispettivamente per celebrare i 30, 20
e 10 anni dal diploma, assieme agli ex allievi
diplomatisi 15 e 25 anni orsono. Nel ritrovarsi,
questi ex allievi hanno voluto sia dedicare un evento a
dei compagni che non ci sono più, sia condividere un
momento di riflessione sull’impatto che l’esperienza
UWC ha avuto sulle loro vite.

Sabato mattina diversi ex allievi hanno portato una testimonianza di come la loro esperienza a Duino abbia
influito sulle loro vite. Nonostante i molteplici percorsi
in ambiti professionali e paesi diversi, chi ascoltava
poteva riconoscersi nelle esperienze di coloro che raccontavano. Molti hanno riflettuto su come l’esperienza
dei Collegi abbia trasformato le loro vite, proiettandoli
in ambienti completamente diversi da quelli delle loro
origini, offrendo opportunità insperate e trasmettendo valori fondamentali.
The event was made all the more moving by the
excellent musical accompaniment of Ivan Leon (Colombia 04-06), Maria Fernanda Florez Areiza and Rasa
Vitkauskaite (Lithuania, 04-06).
Saturday morning offered the opportunity for alumni
of all generations to share the impact that their time
at Duino went on to have on their lives. Testimonies
were heard from alumni who have taken very diverse
routes in life, in very diverse locations, yet whose experiences held a common resonance for those listening. Many touched on the transformational impact
that UWC had on their lives, in terms of immersing
them in diverse environments, offering them unique
opportunities and imparting enduring values.
Il momento culminante è stata la cena di gala del
sabato, in cui il Presidente, Amb. Gianfranco Facco
Bonetti, ha preso la parola per raccontare gli sviluppi
più recenti del collegio. L’epilogo della serata ha visto
diversi allievi dare un generoso contributo con l’acquisto all’asta del Vino della Pace e di alcune monete del
Collegio. L’asta è stata abilmente battuta dall’ex allieva
Hayley Grundy, una professionista di questo settore
che ha intrattenuto magistralmente il pubblico e contribuito al successo dell’iniziativa.
The pinnacle of the weekend came on Saturday night
in the form of the Gala Dinner, when participants
were addressed by the College’s President, Ambassador Gianfranco Facco Bonetti, who updated them
on the progress made by the college. The soirée was
splendidly rounded off by the generosity of alumni who bought Vino della Pace or the UWC Adriatic
coins during the an auction aimed at raising funds for
scholarships that was delightfully presided over by
alumna Hayley Grundy, a professional auctioneer who
greatly contributed to everyone’s amusement and to
the auction’s success.

n occasione della Reunion 2016, nella settimana dal 18 al 22 luglio, noi, un gruppo
di 11 ex allievi del Collegio abbiamo dato
vita a un progetto pilota di volontariato
con la Croce Rossa Sezione di Udine presso uno dei campi di accoglienza della città (Caserma
Friuli). Vent’anni prima eravamo giunti a Duino per
vivere e studiare assieme al Collegio. Erano gli anni
della guerra dei Balcani e molti di noi avevano dato
un contributo partecipando a diversi progetti di
volontariato. Ora il mondo deve confrontarsi con una
nuova crisi di migranti, intensificata dalla guerra in
Siria e da altre situazioni di instabilità. L’esperienza
di vivere con ragazzi di tutto il mondo a Duino ha
profondamente cambiato le nostre vite e con questo
progetto abbiamo voluto tendere la mano, in spirito
di fratellanza e solidarietà, collaborando con la Croce
Rossa nel suo operato a favore dei richiedenti asilo.
Siamo andati al campo tutti i giorni dalle 10.00 alle
16.00 operando su diversi piani: abbiamo fatto lezioni
di italiano per gli ospiti del campo, abbiamo aiutato
gli analfabeti a imparare a scrivere il loro nome e a
riempire dei questionari della Questura e abbiamo
impostato il lavoro di stesura di un “Vademecum per
la convivenza civile” in più lingue, lavoro da completare in un momento successivo e consegnare alla
Croce Rossa.
Il progetto, svolto per testare la fattibilità di una
collaborazione di lungo periodo tra Collegio e CRI, è
stato valutato molto positivamente da tutte le parti
coinvolte. In particolare, da parte dei richiedenti
asilo, che hanno poche opportunità di lavoro e
svago nel campo. Le lezioni di italiano hanno offerto
nuovi stimoli e spezzato la monotonia delle giornate. Questo progetto pilota ha dimostrato che una
collaborazione di lungo periodo tra il Collegio e la
Croce Rossa di Udine non è solo fattibile ma anche
auspicabile per tutti i partecipanti. A partire dal
2017 questa nuova opportunità di volontariato sarà
prevista dal CAS del Collegio.”

Giulio Regeni
“F
ollowing the 2016 Reunion, in the
week of 18-22 July we, 11 alumni
from the United World College
of the Adriatic conducted a pilot
project volunteering with the Red
Cross Udine in one of their refugee shelters (Caserma
Friuli). Twenty years earlier we had come together
to study and learn from each other at the College. It
was the time of the Balkan wars and many of us had
successfully contributed to many refugee projects as
part of our social services.
Now the world faces another refugee crisis, intensified
due to wars in Syria and unstable conditions elsewhere. The experience of living with people from all over
the world in Duino has deeply shaped our lives and
through this project we wanted to take the opportunity of returning to Duino for the Reunion and extend
a hand of friendship and solidarity to collaborate with
the Red Cross in its work with refugees.
For a week we went to the camp from 10 am to 4 pm
and worked on different levels: giving Italian lessons
and providing literacy support to illiterate asylum
seekers, helping them fill out forms and planning a
guidebook in several relevant languages to be completed subsequently in order to give basic information about the new country, society, habits and rules
the asylum seekers must confront with.
As a trial for future long term and sustainable cooperation, the project worked extremely well and received positive feedback from all involved.
In particular, for the migrants who have little distraction at the camp, the Italian lessons helped break
up their daily routine and offered them new stimuli,
which was warmly welcomed. The pilot project proved that a long term continuous cooperation between the UWCAD and the Red Cross in Udine is not only
feasible but very welcomed by everyone involved and
in 2017 this new social service opportunity will be
available.”

l 16 luglio, durante lo svolgimento della Reunion
degli ex allievi, la nostra comunità ha ricevuto
un’ospite d’eccezione: Paola Deffendi, madre di
Giulio Regeni, il quale prima di lasciare la sua
Fiumicello all’età di 17 anni per andare a studiare
a UWC USA aveva partecipato proprio al Collegio di
Duino alle selezioni nazionali italiane.
Al termine della mattinata di condivisione dell’impatto delle loro esperienze UWC, Paola ha preso la parola
per raccontare come frequentare un Collegio UWC
abbia influito sulla vita di Giulio.
Nel ricordare la curiosità intellettuale, l’amore per le
culture più diverse e l’impegno civico di suo figlio,
Paola ha esortato i presenti a sostenere in tutti i modi
la campagna per ottenere giustizia per Giulio, sottolineando sia il valore di sostenere la campagna di
Amnesty International “Verità per Giulio Regeni” sia di
diffondere il più possibile la piattaforma RegeniLeaks
che consente a chiunque abbia notizie sull’accaduto di informare in forma assolutamente anonima gli inquirenti.

n 16 July, during the Reunion, our community welcomed a very special guest:
Paola Deffendi, mother of Giulio Regeni,
who before leaving his home village not
far from Duino to attend UWC USA had
actually participated in the Italian National Selections
at UWC Adriatic. After alumni had spent the morning
sharing the impact of their UWC education on each of
their lives, Paola adressed our alumni to describe how
going to a UWC college had impacted on Giulio’s life.
After remembering her son’s intellectual curiosity, his
passion for different cultures and his civic commitment, Paola urged members of the UWC community
to help the campaign for justice for her son in any way
they feel they can and highlighted the importance of
disseminating both the Amnesty international campaign “Truth about Giulio Regeni” and the RegeniLeaks platform for anonymously providing information
about the circumstances of Giulio’s death.

their graduation anniversary, to finance scholarships.
A committee of alumni donors doubles the

el 2015 è stata istituita la “Fondazione
per i Collegi del Mondo Unito Stock
Weinberg – Edward Stucliffe O.N.L.U.S.”
con l’obiettivo strategico di fornire un
canale aggiuntivo per il fundraising. Le
somme raccolte vengono destinate all’erogazione di
borse di studio per i candidati idonei delle selezioni
UWC in Italia e per dotare UWC Adriatic di fondi per
lo sviluppo del capitale di UWC Adriatic. Nel primo
anno la Fondazione ha acquisito due nuovi consiglieri
di amministrazione: David Halpert e Andrea Vella, che
si uniscono a Filippo Nicolis di Robilant, Shai Misan,
Mario Po’, Roberto De Falco e Gastone Pagot.
Grazie alle donazioni raccolte dagli ex allievi UWC, da
altre fondazioni e aziende, la Fondazione è riuscita a
destinare 7 borse di studio complete e una parziale a
studenti italiani, che sono dunque venuti a studiare a
Duino e a prendere parte all’esperienza educativa del
Collegio. Nell’agosto del 2012 il Collegio del Mondo
Unito dell’Adriatico aveva potuto accogliere solo 4
studenti italiani. Nel 2016 il Collegio conta 14 studenti
che hanno superato le selezioni In Italia. I seguenti
studenti sono stati finanziati dalla Fondazione:

n 2015 the “Fondazione per i Collegi del Mondo Unito Stock Weinberg –Edward Stucliffe
O.N.L.U.S.” was established to strategically
provide a new avenue for raising funds. Monies
raised will be used for scholarships to UWCs for
applicants selected in Italy and to provide capital
development funds for UWC Adriatic. In the first year
the Foundation has acquired two new Directors of the
Board, David Halpert and Andrea Vella, that join Filippo Nicolis di Robilant, Shai Misan, Mario Po’, Roberto
De Falco and Gastone Pagot.
Thanks to the donations raised from UWC alumni, other Foundations and corporations, the UWC
Foundation was able to provide 7 full scholarships
and a partial one for students selected from Italy to
come and be part of the UWC Adriatic experience. In
August 2012 UWC Adriatic was only able to provide
places for 4 students from Italy. In 2016 the College
has 14 students selected from Italy. The following
students were funded by the Foundation:

e conosci il movimento UWC avrai quasi
certamente sentito il nome di Shelby
Davis, un donatore di lungo corso e fondatore del Davis-UWC Scholars Programme,
un fondo che attualmente eroga borse di
studio a 2.500 diplomati UWC che frequentano 91
college e università negli Stati Uniti.
Ad agosto del 2015 Shelby Davis ha lanciato una sfida
alla comunità UWC invitandola a prendere nelle proprie mani la sostenibilità futura del movimento, impegnandosi a sostenere il proprio Collegio. A ciascun
UWC veniva offerta la possibilità di raddoppiare le
donazioni fino a 1 milione di dollari a fronte di donazioni di ex allievi, oppure dei loro genitori e amici.
La comunità del Collegio ha preso molto sul serio
questa opportunità: grazie ai nostri donatori siamo riusciti a ottenere l’intero importo di 1 milione di dollari
USA nell’arco dei primi 12 mesi.

f you are familiar with UWC you will almost
certainly be familiar with Shelby Davis, UWC’s
long time donor and founder of the Davis-UWC
Scholars Programme which is currently supporting
over 2,500 UWC graduates at 91 partner colleges
and universities throughout the United States.
In August 2015 Shelby issued a challenge to the whole
UWC community to take ownership of UWC’s future
sustainability by committing to support their College.
Each UWC could earn up to an overall maximum sum
of US $ 1 million to match charitable donations from
alumni, parents and friends.
UWC Adriatic community took this challenge very
seriously: thanks to all our donors, we have managed
to “unlock” the whole US $ 1 million within the first 12
month since the challenge was launched.

Darren Huston (UWCAD 1983-85), il Collegio ha stretto una partnership con Booking.
com. Effettuando le prenotazioni alberghiere con Booking.com dalla pagina del
collegio (http://www.uwcad.it/index.php/booking-comscholarship) si genera automaticamente una donazione
per una borsa di studio senza costi aggiuntivi per chi fa
la prenotazione.
In questo primo anno la partnership ha già portato a una
prima borsa di studio per l’anno accademico 2016-17.
La diciassettenne Iliana Gjeci è la prima beneficiaria, ci
auguriamo di una lunga serie, di questa grande opportunità. Iliana viene dalla Grecia ed è di origini albanesi.
“La mia è una famiglia di immigrati di orgini albanesi e
dunque conosco da vicino il fenomeno del razzismo. So
che possiamo contrastarlo solo se persone di diverse culture e nazionalità riescono a frequentarsi e a conoscersi “
dice Iliana, descrivendo la sua felicità nel vedersi assegnare questa borsa. “Credo che l’istruzione e la cultura
siano la strada maestra da seguire per chi proviene da
una famiglia o da un gruppo etnico meno avvantaggiato e ho intenzione di fare del mio meglio per cogliere

Huston (UWCAD 1983-85), UWC Adriatic
has a partnership with Booking.com. By
making accommodation reservations with
Booking.com through the UWC Adriatic
website (http://www.uwcad.it/index.php/bookingcom-scholarship) a donation is automatically made
for a scholarship at no cost for the traveler. In its first
year the partnership has resulted in the first scholarship for the academic year 2016-17.
Sventeen-year-old Iliana Gjeci is the first student,
augurably in a line of many to come, to benefit from
this opportunity. Iliana comes from Greece and is of
Albanian origins. “Coming from a family of Albanian
immigrants in Greece I know what racism is all about
and I know it can be defeated only if different cultures
and nationalities really get to know one another from
close up”, she states, explaining how thrilled she is
with having been singled out for a UWC Booking.com
scholarship. “I believe that education and culture are
the best way forward for anyone with a disadvantaged family or ethnic background and I intend to make
the most of this opportunity that Booking.com has
generously offered me.”

hanno visitato lo stabilimento Illycaffè a Trieste. Nel corso degli anni il Collegio ha ricevuto
il generoso sostegno della famiglia Illy: Anna
Illy siede nel CDA del Collegio e garantisce ogni
anno a una borsa di studio per un nostro studente.
Quest’anno il beneficiario è Ahmed Hussein (Kenia).
Illycaffè è un’ azienda nota in tutto il mondo per il
suo caffè di qualità ed è un’azienda importante da far
conoscere ai nostri studenti: si tratta di una delle imprese italiane di maggior successo con sede a Trieste.
Il suo marchio è noto in più di 140 paesi nel mondo e
tutta la produzione proviene da quest’unico impianto

n 7 April 2016 twenty-four UWC Adriatic students went on a tour of Illycaffè
in Trieste. Over the years the College
has benefited from the generosity and
support of the Illy family: Anna Illy sits
on the College board of directors and sponsors one
of our students every year. This year it was Ahmed
Hussein (Kenya).
Illycaffè makes a premium brand expresso coffee
and is an especially important organisation for our
students to get acquainted with: it is one of the most
successful privately-held companies based in Trieste,
with a brand name that is recognised in over 140
countries around the world and with all of its production coming from its one factory in the port area of
Trieste. Significantly, the company has a reputation for
observing the highest standards of ethical business
practice and, indeed, was acclaimed as the World’s
Most Ethical Company by Ethisphere in 2015.
Alongside their impressive business organisation,
the Illy family has also established the Ernesto Illy
Foundation, which pays tribute to the founder of
the company by furthering his legacy of promoting
knowledge, ethics and sustainability as absolute values
of life and enterprise.

resso la sede della Fondazione CRTrieste, il
Vicepresidente del Consiglio di Amministrazione della Fondazione, Prof. Lucio Delcaro,
ha incontrato la studentessa del secondo
anno Nicole Pagnut, beneficiaria di una borsa di studio finanziata dalla Fondazione.
Nicole ha raccontato al Vicepresidente una “giornata
tipo” al Collegio e ha descritto le modalità di svolgimento delle selezioni italiane per entrare in uno
dei 16 collegi di tutto il mondo, sottolineando come
vengano scelti ragazze e ragazzi che dimostrano una
forte propensione all’apertura mentale e al superamento di pregiudizi e preconcetti culturali. A conclusione del cordialissimo incontro Nicole ha ringraziato
sentitamente la Fondazione CRTrieste per averle
offerto la straordinaria opportunità di frequentare una
scuola accademicamente valida che, nel contempo, le
consente di maturare e crescere come persona in un
ambiente che offre stimoli culturali e umani che non
hanno eguali.
“Una struttura quella del Collegio del Mondo Unito
- ha aggiunto il Vicepresidente Delcaro - che ha un
riconoscimento forte e radicato non solo nel nostro
territorio e che accoglie ogni anno studenti da tutto
il mondo per un’esperienza così unica e importante

oggi la Fondazione CRTrieste ha supportato lo studio

he Vicepresident of the Board of the
Fondazione CRTrieste, Prof. Lucio Delcaro,
invited to the foundation’s headquartes our
second year student Nicole Pagnut, the
beneficiary of a scholarship provided by
Fondazione CRTrieste.
Nicole told the Vicepresident how a typical day at
UWC Adriatic unfolds and described how the Italian
selection process singles out students to be sent to
the 16 UWC colleges worldwide by looking for teenagers with a broad mindset with a potential for deconstructing cultural prejudice and stereotypes. At the
end of a very friendly meeting Nicole whleheartedly
thanked CRTrieste for giving her an extraordinary opportunity to attend an academically sound institution
that is also helping her learn and grow as an individual amidst cultural and human stimuli that have very
few parallels.
“UWC Adriatic” added Prof. Delcaro, “is an institution
that is deeply rooted here and respected throughout
the world and that each year brings together students
from all over for a unique and life changing educational experience. Since 1993 Fondazione Crtrieste has
supported several UWC Adriatic students from the
province of Trieste by providing one- and two-year
scholarships. Indeed, education is a sector that the
foundation deeply and firmly supports”.

Dopo aver ammirato diverse opere d’arte di Mirko
Basaldella esposte a Palazzo Contarini, la prestigiosa
sede della Fondazione, Lorenzo Basso (primo anno,
di Pordenone) e Camilla Persello (secondo anno, udinese), hanno condiviso con i loro ospiti diversi aspetti
della vita a Duino, del sistema educativo UWC e del
Diploma di Bacellierato Internazionale, che concluderà il loro ciclo di studi superiori.
After admiring the numerous works of art by Mirko
Basaldella (also from this part of Italy), displayed in
Palazzo Contarini, Lorenzo Basso and Camilla Persello (1st and 2nd year respectively), spoke amiably
with their hosts about life in Duino, UWC education
principles and the IB diploma programme.

Grazie alle borse di studio di Camilla e Lorenzo, la
Fondazione CRUP e il Collegio sono legati nel comune
ricordo dell’avv. Antonio Comelli, alla cui memoria
sono intitolate le due borse di studio erogate dalla
fondazione. Comelli, infatti, allora Presidente della Regione Friuli Venezia Giulia, fu una delle figure chiave
che condussero all’istituzione del collegio a Duino nel
1982 e, successivamente, giunse ai vertici della Cassa
di Risparmio di Udine e Pordenone, di cui oggi la fondazione ha ereditato l’attività filantropica.

and by the director of the Foundation, Mr. Luciano

Thanks to Camilla and Lorenzo’s scholarships,
Fondazione CRUP and UWC Adriatic stand united
in memory of Mr. Antonio Comelli, to whom the
scholarships are entitled. The efforts made by Mr.
Comelli, who in the early 80s was President of the
Region Friuli Venezia Giulia, were instrumental for
setting up UWC Adriatic. He was later appointed to
a leading role in the bank Cassa di Risparmio di Udine e Pordenone, from which the foundation later
took on all charity-related initiatives.

Premio alla bontà
N
el 2015 si è tenuta la sedicesima edizione del “Premio alla Bontà Hazel Marie
Cole”, conferito a 15 nostri studenti dal
vedovo di Hazel e dai suoi amici. Il premio
ambisce a garantire la continuità delle
buone azioni e della generosità di cui fu protagonista
questa straordinaria signora inglese che si stabilì a
Duino dopo il matrimonio e che è tutt’ora ricordata
dalla comunità locale e dal Collegio.
Il premio vuole valorizzare diverse tipologie di buone
azioni che vengono attuate nella vita di tutti i giorni,
spesso piccole azioni invisibili che riescono ad avere
un impatto decisivo quando se ne viene a conoscenza. Il collegio partecipa al secondo filone del premio,
che vuole fornire un aiuto economico agli studenti del
collegio provenienti da paesi in via di sviluppo.
I 15 studenti di quest’anno sono stati premiati nell’Auditorium del Collegio dalla Marchesa Etta Carignani,
Presidente della O.N.L.U.S. “Premio Bontà Hazel Marie
Cole”, e dal Segretario dott. Aldo Pianciamore. La
donazione che viene erogata al Collegio ogni anno
viene messa a disposizione degli studenti bisognosi
tramite il pocket money che viene dagli stessi utilizzato per fare fronte a spese di trasporto, per l’acquisto
di indumenti pesanti, che gli studenti di questi Paesi
raramente posseggono, e per affrontare piccole spese
che altri loro coetanei possono dare per scontate.

or the 16th consecutive year 15 UWC
Adriatic students received the “Premio alla
Bontà Hazel Marie Cole”, awarded by Hazel
Marie Cole’s husband and friends. The prize aims to ensure continuity to the good
deeds and generosity that were a distinguishing
mark of this outstanding English lady who moved
to Duino after her marriage and left a long-lasting
impression on the Duino community and the College.
The prize singles out different kinds of good deeds
made in everyday life: small actions that are often
invisible but which can have a significant impact
if brought to light. The College benefits from the
second component of the prize, which provides
financial assistance to UWC Adriatic students from
developing countries.
This year’s 15 students received the prize in the
College Auditorium from the hands of Marchesa
Etta Carignani, President of the “Premio Bontà Hazel
Maire Cole” not-for-profit organisation, and from
dott. Aldo Pianciamore, Secretary of the organisation and Hazel Marie Cole’s widower.
The pocket money provided to our students is indeed a most welcome and valued contribution that
students use in order to cover transport costs or to
buy winter garments and deal with small expenses
that other teenagers can take for granted.

n base alle volontà testamentarie di Kathleen
Foreman Casali, la Fondazione benefica Kathleen Foreman Casali opera per favorire le espressioni culturali e promuovere la scienza e la ricerca
scientifica. Essa aiuta, inoltre, gli studenti meritevoli appartenenti a famiglie bisognose senza operare
mai alcuna discriminazione rispetto alla fede religiosa,
alla nazionalità, alla razza o al credo politico dei beneficiari. Il Collegio, pertanto, gode da diversi anni del
sostegno della Fondazione.
Nell’anno accademico 2015-16 la beneficiaria di
questa borsa è stata Molly Ireland (primo anno,
Regno Unito). Lo scorso ottobre Molly ha fatto visita
alla Fondazione assieme al nostro Presidente, Amb.
Gianfranco Facco Bonetti, per incontrare e ringraziare
il suo donatore. Sulle prime questi incontri possono
intimidire i nostri studenti.
Essi sanno che devono ai loro donatori la magnifica esperienza che stanno vivendo e sono ansiosi di
ringraziarli adeguatamente. Quando poi studenti e
donatori si incontrano, scoprono invece quanto sia
facile rompere il ghiaccio e come siano molti i temi
che li accomunano.
In questa occasione Molly ha condiviso con il Vicepresidente della Fondazione, dott. Francesco Slocovich,
la sua esperienza al Collegio, in cui circa 180 studenti
di 80 paesi diversi vivono e studiano insieme, impegnandosi in attività di volontariato per integrarsi il
più possibile con la comunità duinese e con quelle
di Monfalcone e Trieste. A sua volta il vicepresidente
Slocovich le ha fatto conoscere meglio come la fondazione operi per sostenere la cultura e l’istruzione,
raccontandole anche come Kathleen Foreman Casali
fosse originaria dell’Inghilterra, motivo per cui, ove
possibile, la Fondazione offre una borsa di studio a
uno studente del Regno Unito.
I
n accordance with the provisions set out in the
will of Kathleen Foreman Casali, the Fondazione
benefica Kathleen Foreman Casali aims to promote culture in general as well as science and scientific research. It also provides merit based support
for students facing financial hardship, with no prejudice in terms of religious faith, nationality, race and
political beliefs. UWC Adriatic has therefore benefited
from the foundation’s support for many years now.
In 2015-16 beneficiary of this scholarship was Molly
Ireland (first year, UK) and in October of last year Molly visited the foundation with our president, Ambassador Gianfranco Facco Bonetti in order to meet and
thank her donor. At first these meetings inevitably
feel slighlty intimidating for students who are aware
that they owe their donors this life-changing opportunity and are eager to convey their thanks adequately. Invariably, when students and donors actually
meet the ice breaks rather quickly and the two realise
that they have a lot in common to discuss.
In this case Molly shared with vice President Francesco Slocovich what life at the College is like, amid 180
students from 80 different countries. How they live
and study together and actively participate in volunteering initiatives in order to become more integrated
in the local community of Duino, as well as the nearby
ones in Monfalcone and Trieste. In turn she learned
more about the foundation’s support for culture and
education and found out that Kathleen Foreman
Casali was English and that is why the foundation
generally seeks to offer, whenever possible, a scholarship to a student from the U.K.
