With ‘Global Style Battles’, we enter the colourful and achingly hip world that includes ‘The Flying Cholitas’, ‘Playboys of Bacongo’, ‘Havana Glam’, ‘Afrometal’ and the original Django, spanning African hell riders and duelling Bolivian women. “I am interested in urban style worldwide,” explains Tamagni. “Not just in exotic locales, but also within my own country. However, I try to avoid the label ‘exoticism and ethnographic pictures’.” Enthralled by the light and colours of the South, Tamagni’s projects have taken him to cities such as Brazzaville, Gaborone, Johannesburg, Dakar, Havana and La Paz. “Moreover, I have a lot of African and Caribbean friends. Although I am Italian, I have always been open-minded about learning about and understanding different cultures. The last few years in particular have influenced my style and subject choices, producing portfolios which might generate a critical reflection on the identity of these people who consider elegance their main reason for existence inside a social reality so very different and so distant from that of our own.” Tamagni’s iconic photographs are a mixture of the staged and the in situ, depending on what occurs within a specific moment. The costumes and dress, however, are all real, although Tamagni smiles and says “if they appear to be constructed, then that is good, for I want to leave the viewer questioning what they see.” 4 [EXHIBITIONS #May/June 2013] All images © Daniele Tamagni 5 [EXHIBITIONS #May/June 2013] les rencontres d’arles photographie arles, july 1 - september 22, 2013 rencontres-arles.com 6 [EXHIBITIONS #May/June 2013] 11th Krakow Photomonth krakow, may 16 - june 16, 2013 ar tf air s Peter Lindbergh, Cindy Crawford, Tatjana Pattz, Helena Christensen, Linda Evangelista, Claudia Schifer, Naomi Campbell, Karen Mudler, Stephanie Seymour, US Vogue, Brooklyn, Nowy Jork , 1991 © Peter Lindbergh photomonth.com 7 [EXHIBITIONS #May/June 2013] 3rd edition of PHOTOMED Sanary-sur-Mer, MAY 23 - JUNE16, 2013 © Lara Zankoul YOUNG LEBANESE SCESE GUEST HONOUR festivalphotomed.com 8 m ar tf LE MOIS DE LA PHOTO à MONTRéAL air MONTRéAL, SEPTEMBER 5 - OCTOBER 5, 2013 s [EXHIBITIONS #May/June 2013] For its 13th edition, Le Mois de la Photo à Montréal has invited renowned British curator Paul Wombell to develop an exhibition program around his theme, Drone: The Automated Image. (kickstarter.com/projects/2066133663/blacktsunami-japan-2011) “Never in my wildest dreams could I have imagined such a natural and man-made disaster hitting my adopted home of Japan. By the time we arrived in the tsunami zone, there was snow falling and mud everywhere. People shuffled almost as in a dream through twisted and tormented debris that suggested the forces at play. By the time we reached the first evacuation center, taking off our shoes, soaked with frigid sea water, and entered a cold, dark gymnasium, chill had penetrated to the bone, but as much as we felt the cold, the young and old were hit far, far worse. Survivors huddled around kerosene heaters. After 20 years in Japan, I looked out at people who could have been my neighbors, friends or even members of my own family. Never had a disaster been more raw, more real, more personal. We seek your support to make a permanent record of this event, which changed Japan forever. A little help from lots of people can go a long way. With Kickstarter it is all or nothing-either the funding goal is reached or it is all for naught. If you cannot offer financial support, please share Black Tsunami with friends. We are grateful for your support.” J. W. Corbijn would go on to acclaim for his iconic enigmatic portraits of musicians and other artists—from U2 and Miles Davis to Robert De Niro and Clint Eastwood to Damien Hirst and Gerhard Richter— also becoming a designer, a pioneer in music video and more recently, an award-winning director of feature films. By 1977, Tom Waits was already known world-wide for a series of stunning, timeless albums, filled with songs of a noirtinged Los Angeles that owed as much to writers like John Fante and Jack Kerouac as it did to jazz, blues and tin-pan alley © Anton Corbijn, Tom Waits Carlifornia Dillon Beach, 2002 courtesy Schirmer-Mosel, 21 that had soaked into Waits’ pores from childhood. Each beautifully and meticulously composed photograph is steeped in Southerness and manifests as visual verse; tenderly capturing the innocence of youth, a longing for what once was and the joy of the here and now. In everyone’s life, there are moments and events that help shape or define who they are, and for Susan Worsham, perhaps the most significant of these occurred when she was just 18 years old. Her brother, whose spinal cord had been severed in a motorcycle accident, took his own life. Already at the young age of 13, Worsham had lost her father to a heart attack and then in 2004, Worsham’s mother passed away as well. Worsham writes, “Shortly after my mother passed, I came across a set of antique veterinary slides. They were some of the most interesting things that I had ever seen. They seemed to hold beauty and death at the same time. I framed 90 of them in a long wooden frame resembling the shape of the slide itself. It was the first piece of art that I made after my mother died. I called the piece a watercolor because of the collection of pastel colors, but it was also a sort of poem when you got close and read the titles… Rabbit’s Lung, Fowl’s spleen, and even Human Umbilical Cord.” From there, Worsham went on to photograph her childhood home as well as her oldest neighbor, Margaret Daniel, one of the last remaining threads from Worsham’s childhood and the last person to see her brother alive. Worsham shares, “Russell’s last day was a Sunday, and Margaret brought him a loaf of her homemade bread (his favorite). He finished the whole loaf, and when my mother and Margaret went for a walk, he shot himself.” 28 [EXHIBITIONS #May/June 2013] David Stewart: shape AT anteprima d’arte contemporanea, roma through JUNE 27, 2013 All images © David Stewart 29 [EXHIBITIONS #May/June 2013] ArtDolores L A B O R AT O RY dolores art laboratory presents pino bertelli: donne del mediterraneo at galleria dolores art palazzo viti, volterra, through may 30 © Pino Bertelli, Tel Aviv mediapartner 30 [EXHIBITIONS #May/June 2013] ArtDolores L A B O R AT O RY Lennette Newell: ANI-HUMAN pow gallery, turin may 23 - june 20, 2013 ores Cattaneo nell’Orchestra Nazionale Rai o Pescatore, 15 no 508779 @libero.it esart.it Galleria: esart.it/galleria ViTi a e Sala Mostre ti, 41 terra (Pisa) italia 588 84047 zoviti.it © Lennette Newell 31 [EXHIBITIONS #May/June 2013] Paolo Ventura: The Infinite City AT Hasted Kraeutler, New York through JUNE 22, 2013 All images: © Paolo Ventura The Infinite City. The high quality of the images in all the videos they make is the result of their tremendous love of still photography, two things they unite in perfect harmony. “Still photography captures reality in an instant which is the photographer’s eye on the world, while video is a thing in itself. Looking at a photograph triggers a process of subjective identification in the viewer that draws on imagination to re-live the moment; looking at a video, this identification is already in process and is experienced in real time with the people involved in the video.” They had not yet finished school when they created their own production house, Castle of Quartz, and less than a year following graduation, they went to India for three months in a documentary project for Kiran, an Indian-Swiss NGO active for over twenty years in health care and educational support for children with handicaps or suffering from polio, cerebral palsy and many other diseases. Their documentary is now ready and is entitled, “A Ray of Light”. “In January 2013 we went to Madhopur, a village located 20 km from Varanasi, the most important Hindu pilgrimage destination, where we lived for more than a month at the Kiran Center, in close contact with all the children and other people who live there. ‘A Ray of Light’ narrates five life stories of five individuals—a baker, an orthopedist, a physiotherapist, a dressmaker and a young man who founded a school for handicapped children. They all recount in words and images how their lives have changed thanks to the help of Kiran.” 44 A RAY OF LIGHT [EXHIBITIONS #May/June 2013] ALESSANDRA SQUARZON & LUCA CASTILLO All images © Alessandra Squarzon & Luca Castillo Watch the documentary "A Ray of Light" on Castleofquartz.it Luca Castillo e Alessandra Squarzon si conoscono in classe durante il corso di video alla Scuola Civica di Cinema e Televisione di Milano (classe 2011/2012) e sin dalla prima esercitazione scolastica il loro feeling professionale spiccava particolarmente.
